00:00Hey everybody my name is David Bertka and I'm here at the New York Post page
00:03six and I'm gonna make a kind of mark which is a take on a real margarita with
00:08alcohol but this is with non-alcohol so I wrote this book with my husband Neil
00:12Patrick Harris it is called both sides of the glass paired mocktails and
00:16cocktails to toast any taste in the book it is a cocktail and a mocktail so you've
00:22got your basic cocktails your old-fashioned and then I took that
00:26cocktail and made a mocktail version of it the new fashion or the penicillin and
00:31I made the antibiotics so it's sort of these classic cocktails but in a non
00:38alcoholic version there's a huge surge of people not drinking nowadays and I'm nine
00:44years sober so it's kind of perfect for a couple who drinks or doesn't drink it's a
00:48great movement we're going into people wanting more clarity and there's a lot of
00:52really great options out there for N.A. spirits there's a lot of really great
00:57mocktails you can make from this book and they're not too sweet this is a take on
01:01your basic margarita but it's all N.A. and there's a lot of really great products
01:06out there these days that are non-alcoholic drinks non-alcoholic spirits
01:11like tequila here they have a zero zero Tanqueray Gin or a Rosso sort of like an
01:19aperitif a Kapari that sort of that sort of style so here we go we have the
01:27ritual proof spirit free tequila and we're gonna do two ounces of the non
01:33alcoholic tequila here pour that in a shaker and then we're gonna do three
01:41force of lime juice there we go and then we're gonna do a half an ounce of agave
01:57syrup and agave is great because it's not too sweet and it's a nice it's not like
02:04simple syrup where it gets refined sugar it gives a bit of a nuttier flavor and it
02:11brightens up the drink and so I don't usually love salt on my rim but we'll do
02:18we'll do we'll do a we'll do a salted rim or you can use tahine which is great so
02:23you just line your drink with the salt put it on a plate and there you go
02:34there's your salt and then we're gonna shake this up
02:39and add some more ice and pour it
02:51and there is your kind of marg we're gonna garnish with a lime oh these aren't cut
03:02okay great perfect and there you go cheers it's close enough to a margarita
03:09but without all of the hangover
03:17for developing all of these cocktails and mocktails we would he would do all of
03:22the cocktails and I would get his cocktail and then I would say how can I
03:27make it a mocktail so we sort of went to our own corners and then we talked about
03:30the party aspect of why we're doing this book and and how we would entertain
03:38with our friends like that so and now of course off the PR that we're doing we're
03:42spending a lot of time together so that's been that's been really nice
03:44what is your favorite mocktail in the book and what is his favorite drink from
03:48the book I really love the yuzu spritz which is a non-alcoholic gin and some
03:56simple syrup and like a yuzu soda it's really great it's light it's bubbly
04:00it's really good for a summer day there's also a lot of like faux gronies
04:05like a lot of Negronies but without alcohol
04:08he he tends to like the heavier drinks the Manhattans the old fashions the
04:12Negronies that's it tends to be his go-to I know that you are both what I would
04:18consider one of the quintessential New York couples that we have and
04:22representing New York well when you have work projects that are in the city do
04:27you host colleagues do you bring them to your house do you have people over yeah
04:32I mean I did we have you know we have teenage kids now so in terms of
04:35entertaining we do a lot of entertaining in our we have a house out east so we
04:40would do a lot of entertaining there because it's much bigger and the kitchen's
04:43much bigger I mean New York spaces are hard to to have big parties at but we have
04:50had dinner parties where we've had people at our house I would say that if we do
04:55have people over it's really more about hey I'm making dinner for the kids
04:59tonight come over I'm making like you know like last night a friend of mine
05:04Sophie Sumner this one top model she's one of my best friends she she came over
05:10for squid ink pasta with rock shrimp you know and I just ripped that up and we had a
05:15family dinner we all sat around the table and had fun and I think people really
05:19appreciate that in New York because you're usually going out all the time
05:22but to come over to someone's house and sit down and have family dinner and talk
05:26about your day and talk about you know we do this thing called run rosebud and
05:30thorn where you talk about the rose your your thing your favorite thing that
05:34happened that day the thorn the thing that have that happened that you didn't
05:38like and the bud the thing that you're looking forward to in the future so we go
05:42around and do that and we also say my day bye and and I think family dinners are
05:48really important for for a family to develop so I we really we really didn't
05:57go by season in the book we went by feel so it's it's broken down by the elements
06:05so you have air water fire and earth so it really feels a vibe you want with
06:12cocktails and mocktails I think you want to vibe from things you want a feeling of
06:17what what where you want to go like do you want a bubbly champagne thing cool
06:23fruity thing for the summer do you want to have something a little heavier like a
06:28bourbon or scotch and sit by the fire and feel warm or something earthy that has
06:33like you know mushroom tea which is crazy it sounds weird or like something earthy
06:38like a beet juice and it depends on what you want but I I do think like seasonally
06:46we're in the fall right now so I think you want you want warmer tones you want
06:50things that that go with the season
06:59Neil Neil really really really wanted to call it mock and and it would be mock
07:09and tails to toast any taste so he wanted to sell it and the publisher was like no
07:15we're not putting that out there
07:18the fall is so great in in in New York and outside of New York I would say if you
07:27can get get to somewhere where you can see that the leaves changing you know it
07:31they go up to the cloisters or go down to a park or Central Park also you know when
07:37we're we have a place out east and it's always great to go apple picking or the
07:42pumpkin patch or you know I know there's you know we would go on our roof and carve
07:46pumpkins for for Halloween you know it's a busy time of year for us because not
07:51only other kids going back to school but their birthday is in the beginning of
07:54October and then you're into you know you're into Thanksgiving and Christmas
07:58and you're making all those plans and it's like once you get on the train in
08:02the fall it doesn't stop so you know we're trying to um you know we try to have
08:07family dinner to Neil's doing the play on Broadway right now so it's been it's
08:10been in our Sundays are pretty sacred you know at night when he's done with
08:16his show we usually always have dinner together it's harder during the week
08:20and he has you know a show at 7 o'clock and the kids are getting you know Harper's
08:24getting home from volleyball and getting it's coming home for rehearsal and we
08:27were all sort of you know when they were younger it was easier but we really try
08:31to find time for the family to all spend together
08:38you know nine years ago there wasn't many options there was like soda water and
08:42juice and they sort of look at you and go we have juice like I'm like I don't
08:47drink it would be like they look down on you but it's a whole different world now
08:51I think the Gen Z generation is seeing that you know it really is not the best
08:58thing to put in your body they want to wake up and they want to feel fresh and
09:01you know I think a lot of bars and clubs are even closing down now because they
09:06because this generation isn't drinking and where do they make all their money is
09:12the alcohol upsell so there are a lot of places that are that are opening that
09:17are juice bars and dance clubs and you know it's an afternoon instead of like a
09:22nighttime we'll go there to people go there just to dance and have fun and be
09:26healthy so I really I embrace it like I think it's great I think you know the
09:31Surgeon General just came out with saying that alcohol is not necessarily the best thing for you
09:35and and I think it's I think it's a good I think it's a good thing I think the more
09:42we can take care of ourselves and be clear I think the better but you know
09:46it's always good to loosen up and have a couple of drinks too for and I've never
09:50been one to like say oh you can't drink it front of me I'm sober right I
09:53actually I push it onto people like have another drink have some more wine I love
09:57to have people have a good time I'm David Berkey here at Page Six and I wrote a
10:02book called both sides of the glass paired cocktails and mocktails to toast any
10:06taste and you can get it wherever books are sold Amazon bookstores go get your copy
