01:11Sometimes you get small scratches and dents in it.
01:14It just happens over time.
01:16You can sometimes fix them and sand them out.
01:20My car is in Alpina, and there's a green seam on the inside that I want to keep.
01:26That means I'm not going to go near it as far as possible when it comes to paint and see, because the care product is black.
01:35Where is the paint now?
01:36I think it's black here, and the seam would be black afterwards, of course.
01:41You can tape it off.
01:44Or alternatively, just be careful not to dab over it with the paint.
01:49Okay, let's go out into the car and I'll show you what the steering wheel looks like now.
01:53So, this is the current state, completely unvarnished, right?
01:58You can already see so many areas here.
02:01I have no idea what happened there over time, whether it was me or the previous owner or whatever.
02:07In any case, there are quite a few areas.
02:13Well, here, I hope you can see it somewhat.
02:16Everything is a bit over and underexposed, but here it's actually already partly matte.
02:20Here it shines endlessly.
02:25Here's some major damage.
02:27We have a sanding bed with us.
02:28How much of this will go away remains to be seen.
02:31Something happened here too.
02:33Here is the green seam.
02:36I hope I can do it.
02:37Up here is a blue seam.
02:38Uh, if it goes completely wrong now, okay, then it will soon be black.
02:43But I'll see if I can make sure that doesn't happen.
02:45And uh, yeah, then let's get started.
02:49Okay, here we go.
02:52So, everything you need is here, of course, that's clear.
02:57Uh, you definitely start with the cleaner.
02:59Uh, the cleaner is relatively generously sized.
03:18There's a reason for that, namely so that you can really clean the steering wheel properly.
03:21And then here are the two cloths.
03:29So, the first step would actually be.
03:31Oh yeah, I almost forgot the first step.
03:35The first step is of course to mask off the whole thing.
03:39That means that the areas that shouldn't get any paint are masked off.
03:44Okay.
03:51And then the next step is with the little one.
04:02Well, it always depends on what kind of supplier you've got, right?
04:07Well, the one from the leather center comes with a leather cleaner.
04:11So, two leather cleaners.
04:14But to start with, you definitely use the one that you use to really clean the steering wheel intensively.
04:19So, you take one of the two sponges that come with it and use it to clean every corner that will then get a new coat of paint.
04:40In this case, it's not a problem if you go over the seams with it.
04:44They definitely won't get any worse with it, but if you want to paint them, you have to make sure that you don't touch the seams.
04:57Or if you touch them, so if you have colored seams and you don't care, you can just spray over them and they'll be black.
05:03Then it's also important to do this on the back, even if you can't see it, but of course that's also important when applying the paint.
05:13So, let's take one of the cloths here to dry it.
05:33There are two of them and then we can actually start using the sanding pad.
05:37Of course, the adhesive edge may need to be re-glued, there are a few spots that will probably come loose at some point, but so far it looks pretty good.
05:49So, now we're going to use the sanding pad, so to speak, on both sides.
06:03And with that, you start sanding the steering wheel in general, but of course the defective areas in particular, slowly and not too hard.
06:26In any case, when it comes to transitions, it always depends a bit on the steering wheel.
06:29There are a few transitions here, don't apply too much pressure.
06:33So, everything has been sanded now, I also tried to remove the spots a little bit.
06:50Of course, you shouldn't overdo it, it probably won't be a new steering wheel, but yes, it worked a little bit anyway.
06:57So, the surface scratches are definitely gone.
06:59Down here, the really deep ones aren't, they'll stay.
07:02Uh, yes, the most important step is actually to apply grease several times.
07:08Especially, uh, because of the age, I would say, it's really important.
07:13Remove several times in a row.
07:15Always use the cloth for this.
07:17If it turns black at some point and is too black, then it's better to use another cloth, a microfiber cloth or something.
07:24Uh, but that's actually the most important step to ensure that the new paint lasts.
07:29That's why the bottle is so large, so that the steering wheel is completely clean.
07:42So, I'm done with that now.
08:02I've wiped it down a thousand times.
08:04You've had enough of the liquid, the cleaner, there's hardly any left.
08:08A little bit of it will last forever.
08:09Make sure there's ventilation in the vehicle, otherwise you'll fall over after five minutes.
08:13And once that's done, you can move on to the next step.
08:24You can also test whether the steering wheel has been properly degreased by simply sticking some of the adhesive tape I used to cover it onto the steering wheel.
08:31It's already good if it sticks at all, and then you can see how it can be removed, right?
08:39If there's still grease underneath, it's really easy.
08:41And if the thing is clean, you'll feel resistance when you pull it off.
08:44It's here now, you can hear it.
08:46Uh, yes, it's best to wipe it over again at this point, so that the adhesive doesn't settle.
08:53And then you can move on to the paint.
08:55We have it here.
08:58A little box.
08:59There's another sponge in there.
09:08It's called Letterfresh.
09:11Shake it like a spray can.
09:17There's a little sponge here and a glove here.
09:21You can also remove the paint from your hands.
09:25Basically, the glove makes sense.
09:30By the way, I'd like to mention that when you apply the paint here,
09:33it's basically the last step and the paint should be dabbed on.
09:38You can apply the first, very thin layer at the very beginning, let's say, the first time around.
09:46You can paint it, but then you should dab the entire steering wheel with the paint so that when it dries,
09:51no streaks or lines are visible.
09:55That doesn't happen with dabbing.
09:58And then you can either let it air out, because you should apply two or three layers,
10:02two in any case, three, you just have to see how it looks.
10:05If the layers are applied, then either let them air out for a long time in between,
10:12or simply use a normal hairdryer to help.
10:15I'm going to dry it with a hairdryer now.
10:18You can see it in the areas where it becomes matte, when it's dry,
10:21and then you can actually go over it with the second layer.
10:23So, the process is basically the same.
10:30Yes, shake the paint.
10:32In any case, be careful not to knock the whole thing over.
10:35That's not so unrealistic.
10:36As I said, I definitely have to pay attention to the seams here so that I don't get them.
10:53I'm going to do this roughly outside the seams for now.
11:11And once the sponge has soaked up a bit of the paint, it's also easier to get to the exact areas,
11:16like the seams here.
11:33So, the first drying process is basically done.
11:36Um, I'm going to use a hairdryer now.
11:40I'll take a hairdryer now and you can simply dry it with the film and then give the second coat a
11:44little more time to air out.
11:46So, and now I'll basically do it, I've dried it with the hairdryer.
12:02Now just do the second coat again.
12:05I think if you don't have a hairdryer on hand or you just don't want to use a hairdryer,
12:09then I think you need about half an hour of airing time between coats.
12:13So, I'll definitely do three coats now, because the steering wheel just looked really bad.
12:19Uh, yeah, let's see how it looks.
12:25Okay, now let's try a third coat.
12:36By the way, it already looks completely different.
12:41So, I think the result can only work.
12:51So, I've done the three steps now, actually, I did four, that's how it looks at the moment.
12:59But there's still one last step missing, so to speak, but already.
13:03Great result, I really like it.
13:06Uh, I dabbed three times, right?
13:08As described in other tutorials online.
13:14However, if you look closely, you can see the small dots from the dabbing.
13:18That was fine, it wasn't dramatic, you could just see them.
13:23Um, I just did the last pass again, very thinly and very quickly, applied a little paint again by
13:28brushing, and now you can't see it at all.
13:30The dots are gone, I don't see any streaks from the painting here either.
13:36Um, you'll have to see how it is for you.
13:38You can also sand it down in between, that's also possible between work steps.
13:43Um, I didn't think it was necessary here, right?
13:46But it also depends a bit on the steering wheel.
13:48Um, in any case, the last pass here.
13:51In my case, brushing instead of dabbing worked quite well.
13:54So, as the last step, once everything has dried, I did this while blow drying, let it dry a bit,
14:02and now I've put my gloves back on and am now doing the last step.
14:08And that's the leather sealant.
14:12It's intended for when the steering wheel needs to remain matte and, as far as I know, for newer
14:16steering wheels, newer materials that are probably not from the 80s or 90s, I don't know exactly.
14:21In any case, there's also this, what's it called?
14:28Elephant, exactly.
14:31It's pretty much the opposite, it makes the steering wheel shiny and I don't want that in the vehicle.
14:38So I'm just going to go over it again with the sealant.
14:45Be relatively sparing with the amount.
14:46So don't soak the steering wheel in the sealant, don't be surprised.
14:53It will also remove a little bit of the color, of course.
15:03Okay, that's it.
15:08Tape off again and this is what it looks like.
15:10I'm actually very happy, the seams worked out too.
15:16They're still green.
15:18Up here they're still blue.
15:20Well, as far as you can see, they're definitely still there.
15:29Yes, if it helped you, leave a subscription again.
15:31I'd be happy and until the next video, ciao.
15:40Awesome.
15:49We'll be right back and we'll be back.
16:04Geh, geh, geh.
16:34Geh, geh, geh, geh.
17:04Geh, geh, geh.
