00:00From Television City in Hollywood, it's everybody's game of strategy, knowledge, and fun.
00:08It's the new Tic-Tac-Toe.
00:10And now, here's our host, Queen Martindale.
00:17Thank you very much.
00:26Thank you very much, everybody.
00:28Gee, you are nice.
00:29Welcome to our brand new series, the new Tic-Tac-Toe.
00:32I've got to be honest with you.
00:33I think this is probably the best television game I have ever come across.
00:37I must admit, I'm a little prejudiced, but I hope you agree with me.
00:40Thank you for being with us.
00:41Let's meet our first two players.
00:42Here they are.
00:43Jay, who are they?
00:44Rick, here's a gal who is a housewife and a student whose interests are tennis, crossword puzzles, and the theater.
00:49Meet Ruth Freed.
00:51And her opponent was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
00:53He's a disability claims examiner who has worked as a golf instructor.
00:56Say hello to Dan Thomas.
00:59Yeah, shake hands and come out fighting.
01:07Ruth, are you married?
01:08Yes, I've been married for 26 short years.
01:11My husband's a computer analyst, and we have three children who are 21, 18, and 16.
01:15Hey, welcome to the show.
01:16Good luck.
01:17Thank you very much.
01:17Dan.
01:19Dan Thomas.
01:21Danny Thomas.
01:22I won't ask the obvious.
01:23Well, thanks, because I think I've heard them all before, but there's no relationship.
01:26Any hobbies, Dan?
01:27Uh, yes, I like skiing, golf, and, uh, I like to sleep.
01:33Would you do us a favor?
01:34Try staying awake for the next few minutes.
01:35Okay, Dan?
01:35I don't think I could go to sleep.
01:36Hey, good luck to you both.
01:37Welcome to the new Tic-Tac-Toe.
01:39Here's the way we play the game.
01:40You get an X or an O for correctly answering a question in the category of the box you select.
01:45Three X's or three O's, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally, wins the game.
01:51An X or an O in an outside box adds $100 to the pot, and because the center box is so vital
01:56to the playing of the game, those questions are a little harder, I will admit, but we put
02:00$200 in the pot for those.
02:02Whoever wins the game takes all the money in the pot and goes on to play the Tic-Tac-Toe
02:05bonus game.
02:06Now, you've glanced at the categories.
02:08Let's take a look at the subjects we'll be dealing with.
02:10Our questions will be based on these subjects, foods, art, famous pairs, the body, who am
02:15I, faces, the Arabs, dropouts, and baseball.
02:21We always begin a new game by just moving the categories around on the board, so let's
02:25do that first off.
02:26The categories will all change places on the board, and then we'll start asking for your
02:30X's and your O's selections.
02:32Okay, there they are, and Ruth, we always begin with X.
02:35Your turn to place your first X, and away we go.
02:38Where's it going to go?
02:38I'd like to try to put my first X in the upper left-hand box, who am I?
02:43Who am I?
02:43All righty.
02:44Category, who am I?
02:45Listen carefully for your first X.
02:47If I do say so myself, people consider me quite talented.
02:51My paintings are world famous.
02:53I'm also known as a sculptor, an architect, an engineer, and a scientist.
02:56In fact, if I had had an engine, I could have probably made my airplane fly.
03:01By the way, I was born over 525 years ago in Italy.
03:06Who am I?
03:08Lea Mato da Vinci.
03:09You're right.
03:09Put an X there.
03:13Very good, Ruth.
03:14$100 into the clock.
03:16Dan, your turn to place your first O, hopefully.
03:18Where would you like it to go?
03:19I would like to go baseball, something I think I know a little bit about.
03:21Okay, there's no slot about baseball.
03:24Let's find out.
03:24Here's your question.
03:25Even though it seems like a job for a sanitation worker, it's really the name given to the batter
03:30who hits fourth.
03:32I believe that's cleanup.
03:33You're right.
03:34Put an O there.
03:37$200 in the clock.
03:38Let's move the categories around now.
03:40Move the categories around on the board once again at the end of each round.
03:44We have three darker categories on the board, players.
03:46Those are jump-in questions.
03:48One's on baseball, one's on famous bears, and one is on the body.
03:51Select one of those, and we'll have a showdown between you and your opponent
03:54to see who gets a chance to answer that first.
03:56Back to you, Ruth.
03:57Where would you like to place your next X?
03:59I'd like to try for that center box and art.
04:02Okay, that's a little harder.
04:03I'll give you a little extra time to think about your answer.
04:05It's worth $200 to the pot, Ruth.
04:07Listen carefully.
04:08The finest works of one of the world's greatest artists can be found on the walls and ceilings
04:13of a chapel in Vatican City.
04:15First, I want you to name the artist.
04:17Secondly, name the chapel.
04:19I'll give you a few extra seconds.
04:29Ruth, for that all-important center box, name the artist I have in mind.
04:35Michelangelo.
04:36You're halfway there.
04:37That's correct.
04:37Now, name the chapel.
04:39The Sistine Chapel.
04:40You're right.
04:41Put an X there and put $200 in the pot.
04:46$400 in the pot.
04:47Dan, your turn to place your next O.
04:49Where's it going to go?
04:50I would like dropouts to try and block it.
04:52All right.
04:53If you answer this question correctly, you'll have a successful block.
04:55This composer, who often collaborated with his brother, Ira, dropped out of school to
04:59compose such hits as Rhapsody in Blue and Forgy and Bess, to block her, name him.
05:08Samuel Gershwin?
05:10No.
05:10No.
05:11I'm sorry.
05:11I can't accept that.
05:12Correct?
05:13George Gershwin.
05:14George Gershwin.
05:15Not Samuel.
05:16All right.
05:16Let's move the categories around once again.
05:18We have $400 in the pot.
05:20That's where they'll be when we come back right after these commercial words.
05:23Don't go away.
05:25Bill Doyne, we go back to you, Ruth.
05:34Where would you like to place your next X, please?
05:36I would like to place a famous pair, please.
05:38All right.
05:38If you answer this question correctly, you'll have tic-tac-toe and $500.
05:42The category is famous pairs.
05:44Here's the question.
05:46Tom is the name of a famous cartoon cat who's always chasing a cartoon mouse.
05:51For tic-tac-toe, name the mouse.
05:53Jerry.
05:54Tic-tac-toe, you got it.
06:00Tom and Jerry.
06:07Very good, Ruth.
06:08So, Ruth, our X player, not X rated, our X player, becomes our champion with $500 and, of course, the right to go on and play the tic-tac-toe bonus game.
06:18Congratulations, Ruth.
06:19Dan, sorry, no money, no big cigar, but a couple of nice prizes, who knows, maybe a box of cigars backstage.
06:24Thank you for playing our game.
06:25Good luck to you.
06:26Okay, Ruth, come on and let's see if you can add to your winnings.
06:36Again, congratulations to you.
06:38Now let's play our bonus game.
06:39You ready?
06:40Yes, I am.
06:40All right, let's see if you can add to your winnings in cash and prizes.
06:42On this board, we have nine numbers.
06:44Step up just a little closer, Ruth.
06:46I want you to get close to that board.
06:47Mm-hmm.
06:48Behind these numbers are four X's, four O's, and one dragon.
06:52Now the X's and the O's have been distributed on the board, so there's only one possible way for you to hit tic-tac-toe.
06:57You're going to be calling off numbers.
06:59For every XRO you find, I'm going to give you $150.
07:02Isn't that nice?
07:02Lovely.
07:03You can take that money and stop any time you like.
07:06Mm-hmm.
07:06However, when you call off a number, if you should find the dragon, which I hope you do not do,
07:11the game's over and you lose the cash.
07:13However, Ruth, if you find the one tic-tac-toe on the board,
07:18you will get not only the cash you've accumulated, but all of the prizes Jay Stewart's going to describe.
07:22Listen.
07:23Ruth, we'll start with our gift package of String of Pearls from Tiffany & Company, the Stunning Pearls Choker.
07:30To complement your costume at any special evening affair,
07:32you'll be even more elegant wearing this choker of 7 1⁄3 millimeter matched pearls from Tiffany & Company.
07:38And most appropriately, you'll be taking this gift to Hong Kong.
07:43It's the Pearl of the Orient.
07:46It's a trip between you to this British town colony located on the southeast coast of China.
07:51The word Hong Kong means fragrant harbor.
07:54It's a week's day for two at the Lee Gardens Hotel, 900 rooms and suites,
07:58all with color television in the heart of Hong Kong.
08:01Suburb cuisine at any of four restaurants with European and Asian menus.
08:05And, Ruth, this Oriental package is worth $3,450 in prizes.
08:13Good luck, Jay.
08:16Okay, Ruth.
08:17All you have to do to win all of that and any cash you accumulate here is hit a tic-tac-toe.
08:22Let's get started.
08:22Pick a number.
08:23Let's start with four.
08:25Number four, the beginning point.
08:26What's behind number four?
08:27Is it an X?
08:28Is it an O?
08:29Or is it the dragon?
08:32It is the dragon.
08:33Wow.
08:34What a way to start, Ruth.
08:36Yeah, what are you going to do next time you don't do that?
08:38That's for sure.
08:39Well, maybe you'll win another game.
08:41You get to come back and do it again, get a shot at that trip again.
08:43Okay, I'll try.
08:44However, nobody can take what you want away.
08:46You have $500 in cash as our champion with the right to continue.
08:49Would you like to do that?
08:50I really would.
08:51Okay.
08:52We're going to reveal the board, first of all, before we begin a new game
08:55and show you where the tic-tac-toe was located had you found it.
08:58Unfortunately, you found the dragon first.
09:00Let's see.
09:01Where was tic-tac-toe located on the bonus board?
09:04There it is.
09:04Across the board.
09:05Horizontally at the bottom.
09:06That's where you should have gone.
09:07I know.
09:08Now you know.
09:10Now it's easy.
09:10Hey, good luck next time.
09:12Congratulations.
09:12You're still our champion, and let's play a new game, shall we?
09:14Okay.
09:22Brookie's got $500 now, and we need a new player.
09:24So, Jay Stewart, who's going to play against her next?
09:26Our next challenger was born in Dardanelle, Arkansas.
09:30He's an emergency room nurse who has worked as a dancer and bartender.
09:32Meet Joe Price.
09:33Joe, welcome to the tic-tac-toe show.
09:43Boy, bartending must have been tamed compared to emergency work, huh?
09:47Well, emergency room is a little bit hectic, but you get a feeling of satisfaction out of helping people.
09:52I think that's kind of nice, and I'll go along with that 100%.
09:55Joe, welcome to the new tic-tac-toe show.
09:57I wish you luck.
09:58You'll start a brand-new game right after we take this break.
10:01If you'd like to be a contestant on tic-tac-toe, or join us here in the studio audience,
10:12right through us at Tic-Tac-Toe, Post Office Box 950, Los Angeles, California, 90048.
10:22Ruth Reed and Joe Price in a new game of the new tic-tac-toe.
10:25Let's take a look at the categories you'll be playing with in this game.
10:27We have Beatlemania, Animal World, Odd Facts, English Literature, Israel, Mixed Words, Oscar Winners, Chemistry, and Fashions.
10:36Now, let's move those categories around on the board, and Ruth will begin in a moment asking you to place your first X.
10:42Categories change positions, and there they are, all set and ready for you, Ruth.
10:46Which one would you like to pick first?
10:48I'd like to try my first X in that center box with Oscar winners.
10:51Okay, she wants to go to the center box.
10:53It's a little harder, as you know, but it's worth $200 to the pot.
10:56Ruth, important question.
10:58By the way, if you need a little extra time for your answer, I'll give it to you.
11:01Only four men in the history of the Oscars have been nominated as Best Actor and Best Screenwriter for the same film.
11:07I want you to name two, and here's some extra time.
11:10Ruth, four men in the history of the Oscars have been nominated as Best Actor and Best Screenwriter for the same film.
11:25Name two for that center box.
11:27I think one might be Woody Allen.
11:29That's right.
11:30One more.
11:31The only other one that comes to mind is Charlie Chaplin.
11:33That's right.
11:34You've got the center box.
11:42That was a guess.
11:44If that was a guess, that was a mighty educated guess.
11:46By the way, the two others were Orson Welles and Sylvester Stallone just last year.
11:50So you've got an X.
11:51$200 goes in the pot.
11:52Joe, where would you like to place your first O, please?
11:54I'll try the upper left-hand corner, Israel.
11:56Israel it is.
11:57And here's your question on Israel.
11:58Joe, listen very carefully.
12:01In its 30 years of existence, Israel has found it necessary to invade a number of Arab countries.
12:06Which one of these countries has not, not been invaded by Israel?
12:10Egypt, Saudi Arabia, or Syria?
12:13Saudi Arabia.
12:13You are right.
12:14Put an O there.
12:18$300 in the pot.
12:19Let's move the categories around now.
12:211-0 on the board.
12:221-X on the board.
12:23And that's center box.
12:24Fashion, odd facts, and English lit.
12:26Those are jump-ins.
12:28Ruth, back to you for your next X.
12:30Where would you like it to go, please?
12:32I'd like to see what mixed words on the middle left looks like.
12:34Okay, then you just will.
12:36Listen carefully.
12:37Take a look, Ruth, at this mixed-up word.
12:41Now unscramble the letters and give me the name of something you like to nibble on.
12:46Banana.
12:46You got it.
12:51Put an X there.
12:52We have $400 in the pot.
12:54And Joe, we turn back to you.
12:55Where would you like your second O to go?
12:57Oh, got to go to Millwright's block.
13:00I'm sorry.
13:00Odd facts.
13:01Odd facts.
13:02All right, you're going for a block.
13:03Joe, if you answer this question correctly, you'll have a successful block.
13:07Ruth, if you answer it correctly, you'll have tic-tac-toe and $500.
13:12Listen carefully.
13:12Put your hands on the buzzers.
13:14Here is the question.
13:15Tell me the most commonly used letter in the English...
13:18Ruth, you buzz first.
13:20What's your answer?
13:21E.
13:21You got it for tic-tac-toe.
13:33I didn't even get to give you a choice.
13:35I was going to give her a choice.
13:37You didn't take much time for that.
13:38I was afraid to think.
13:39You got $500 in the process.
13:40What did you say?
13:40I was afraid to think.
13:42Hey, you've won $1,000 so far in cash with a chance to go back to the bonus game and perhaps
13:46win that trip to Hong Kong.
13:48Joe, nothing for you.
13:50A couple of nice prizes backstage.
13:51Thank you for playing the new tic-tac-toe.
13:53Nice meeting you.
13:54Go play.
13:57Don't go away.
14:27All you got to do is beat five.
14:35You're partway there.
14:37You have a chance now to win that trip to Hong Kong, the pearl necklace, and that, well,
14:41it all comes out to $3,450 in prizes.
14:45Plus, you can add some cash to your winnings.
14:47Come on over here.
14:54That's right.
14:55I said, let's do it again.
14:56She said, not the same way.
14:57That's for sure.
14:58Because the first call, you hit the dragon a while ago.
15:00You know how we play, right?
15:01I think so.
15:02You know what you're supposed to do.
15:03Supposed to get tic-tac-toe and no dragon.
15:05That's right.
15:06How is she doing so far?
15:08All righty, Ruth.
15:08Pick a number, please.
15:10Number four.
15:11You wouldn't do it again.
15:12All right.
15:12She's going to go back to number four.
15:14It was the wrong one a while ago.
15:16What is behind number four?
15:17The X, the O, or the dragon.
15:20X for $150.
15:25Okay, Ruth, you've got $150 now.
15:27You know how it works.
15:28You can take the money and stop, or you can continue looking for the one tic-tac-toe on
15:32the board.
15:32All right.
15:34What are you doing?
15:35Okay, I'm going to go.
15:36I think everybody's in total agreement.
15:37They say, go on.
15:38Pick another number.
15:39I'd like to try the center five.
15:41All right.
15:41She's going to move to the center, number five.
15:43Let's take a look behind number five.
15:45And what do we find, Ruth?
15:47An O for another $150.
15:51Ruth, so far, so good.
15:52You got $300 now.
15:54Do you have anybody in the audience with you today?
15:55Yes, I think five people.
15:57My husband and two children and a couple of friends.
15:59Well, you've got a whole fan club.
16:00Where are you?
16:01Where's the group?
16:02Her group.
16:03There they are.
16:03What do you think she ought to do?
16:04Should she stop and take the three bills or keep going?
16:08Holtman says keep going.
16:09I go.
16:10I do what he says.
16:10Okay.
16:11Pick another number.
16:12Okay.
16:13I would like number six.
16:15Number six it is.
16:16All righty.
16:17Let's take a look behind number six.
16:19Do we find an X, O, or you know what?
16:22Oh, you're still alive.
16:25$450.
16:28Ruth, as the total continues to grow, what are you going to do?
16:32Are you going to stop or do I?
16:33Go.
16:35Going to go.
16:36All right.
16:36Step right up here now so we can all take a good look at you as you make your selection.
16:39What number is it going to be?
16:41Two.
16:42Number two.
16:42Little deuce up at the top.
16:44What's behind number two?
16:45Let's take a look, Ruth.
16:46Cross your fingers and we look at an X.
16:48There it is.
16:49Come on.
16:49Six hundred dollars, Ruth.
16:54Six hundred big bucks.
16:55Six hundred.
16:56Um, my family says go.
16:58They want you to go.
16:59What do you want to do, though?
17:00I want to go home.
17:01Not quite yet.
17:04No, I want to go and I want to try.
17:06Gee, I messed up pretty badly there.
17:08Number seven.
17:09All right.
17:09Number seven.
17:10Let's take a look and see what's behind number seven, Ruth.
17:13I got my fingers crossed.
17:14What do we see?
17:15It's an X.
17:16So far, so good.
17:21Okay, Ruth is studying the board.
17:23She's got $750.
17:24They say go.
17:25What do you want to do?
17:26I want number one.
17:27All right.
17:28If there is an X behind number one, you'll have $900 in cash, $3,450 in prizes for a total
17:34of $4,350 in this game.
17:37What's behind number one?
17:39Is it an O?
17:40Is it an X for $4,350?
17:43Or is it the dragon?
17:45Kicks, pass, go!
17:46Come on!
17:54Really?
17:56Oh, congratulations.
18:02What's the old saying?
18:03Three's a charm with you, two was the charm.
18:06I guess so.
18:06You missed the first time, but you got it this time, and you picked up a lot of cash and
18:10a beautiful...
18:10And you said, you mean I'm going to go to China?
18:12Yes, you are.
18:13Really?
18:13My husband's always wanted to go there.
18:15Can he get some time off?
18:16I hope so.
18:16I hope his boss will let him.
