00:00We start with some breaking news from Great Britain.
00:02Prince Andrew is to be stripped of his royal titles.
00:05King Charles III has begun this process.
00:08Andrew, we remind you, embroiled in the ongoing Epstein affair.
00:12He's already stepped away from royal duties,
00:14but this seems to be now the last stage in his fall from grace
00:17from his birthright under British heritage and law.
00:20Andrew, we remind you, served in the British military.
00:22He had already been stripped of his honorary titles in the services
00:26in the wake of revelations about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
00:30Let's bring in Philip Toll for more on this one.
00:32Philip, of course, our international affairs editor.
00:35Philip, give us more of a sense of what this means for Prince Andrew.
00:38King Charles beginning of what seems to be the final process
00:41of his public humiliation.
00:44I think the final process is probably the right way
00:47to describe what has happened in the last few minutes
00:50in the United Kingdom.
00:53Prince Andrew no longer now being Prince.
00:56He's going to be known from now on as Andrew Mountbatten,
00:59and Windsor, that Prince title, has been withdrawn by King Charles.
01:04He's also been given a formal notice to surrender the lease on his home,
01:09which he has a lease for until 2078.
01:13But the problem with this is that recent reports in the press
01:17have come to the conclusion that he's not paying any rent
01:20on the lease agreement.
01:21It's marked one peppercorn a year,
01:23and public pressure is growing on former Prince Andrew.
01:27Let's move out of that house,
01:28which is something that he's now going to have to do.
01:30The word coming from Buckingham Palace at the moment
01:33is that former Prince Andrew,
01:35they're going to have to move out as soon as possible.
01:37And one other important point to underline here is that the title
01:42of the Duke of York, of which Andrew has already been stripped last week,
01:48is going to be removed from the peerage role,
01:50which means that it will no longer be used as a title
01:54for any member of the royal family in the future.
01:58The only positive news for part of the family of Andrew
02:02and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson,
02:04is that their two daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice,
02:07will still be able to use the terms of princess to their names.
02:12They were born princesses and they will remain so.
02:15So for Andrew, the humiliation going hand in hand, of course,
02:18with the fact that this Jeffrey Epstein affair
02:21and the related issues in which he is embroiled will not go away.
02:25The public interest will not stop on either side of the Atlantic.
02:29Clearly, this has been a very damaging affair.
02:32For the British royal family, regardless of what Prince Andrew might have done,
02:37or sorry, Andrew, as he's now called,
02:38might have done in terms of stepping away from his duties.
02:42Clearly, one wonders how the British royal family reacts to this
02:45and builds back from this.
02:48That is a very important question and a very hard question to answer, Mark.
02:54I think that there have been attempts over the years,
02:57even by Andrew himself in that interview,
03:00that disastrous interview for the BBC he did with Emily Maitlis in 2019,
03:04which led to him being stripped of certain of his titles
03:07by the former Queen Elizabeth II.
03:10That wasn't enough to calm all the anger that grew up over his relationship
03:15with Jeffrey Epstein and also with Virginia Gouffre,
03:19whom we can see in the picture here.
03:21A posthumous book by Virginia Gouffre was published just last week called Nobody's Girl,
03:28which underlines the fact that Andrew had sex with her three times
03:33on three different occasions when she was only 17 years old
03:37and basically underlined that he was lying.
03:40Other lies have also come out in recent times about emails that he sent to Jeffrey Epstein
03:45after he'd announced that he'd broken off a friendship with him.
03:49Another email surfaced showing that he was still in contact with Jeffrey Epstein
03:54six weeks after he said he'd broken off the friendship.
03:57And if that wasn't enough, there have also been reports of emails exchanged
04:01between Jeffrey Epstein and Sarah Ferguson as well.
04:05So all of this has increased public pressure for Andrew to be stripped of his titles,
04:11for his title of Prince to be removed.
04:14If you look at the opinion polls in the United Kingdom,
04:17only about 5% of the British have a favourable opinion rating of Andrew.
04:22That was opinion polls during the summer.
04:24Probably even fewer people now, and a majority of British people
04:28have asked for him to be stripped of his titles.
04:31And I think to limit the damage control, because this is having a ricochet effect
04:36on the rest of the royal family, we saw King Charles being heckled last week
04:40when he was on a walkabout with questions being asked about Prince Andrew
04:44and what he'd been doing about it and how much he knew about the relationship
04:48that his brother had had with Jeffrey Epstein.
04:51It's a damage control effort by the royal family, but is it too little too late?
04:56The damage has been done.
04:58How long is it going to take for the royal family to recover from this?
05:00I think that is a question that everybody is asking tonight.
05:04Philip Toll, our international affairs editor, thank you for that analysis
05:07of the latest developments coming out of London.
05:10Buckingham Palace says that King Charles III is to strip Prince Andrew
05:14of remaining titles and evict him from his royal residence.
05:18As Philip pointed out, he's been paying what they call a peppercorn rent
05:23on that residence, which is described as the royal lodge.
05:26It's actually a mansion in terms of its size.
05:29It's a very substantial property.
05:31And the other development will be that Prince Andrew will no longer be known
05:34as Prince Andrew, but as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
05:38We will watch all developments on that story.
05:40That's the breaking news coming out of London.
