00:00It's what brings goes back to life.
00:03Just enough for one.
00:05Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the saddest, funniest,
00:10and most memorable scenes from the 1995 classic, Casper.
00:14Cat, can I keep you?
00:18Warning, spoilers ahead.
00:20Number 10, Cat Meets Casper.
00:23When a parapsychologist, Dr. James Harvey, gets a call from a frustrated heiress with
00:28a paranormal problem, he leaves Santa Fe to move into Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine.
00:33I've eaten in nine different cafeterias.
00:36I mean, I can't even remember anyone's name.
00:39For once, I would just like to be in one place long enough to make a friend.
00:45His teenage daughter, Kathleen, Cat Harvey, is less than thrilled to uproot her life yet
00:51again.
00:52Little did they know, the whole thing was orchestrated by Casper, a friendly but lonely ghost haunting
00:57the Harvey's new dilapidated home.
00:59Uh, uh, hi?
01:06Man!
01:08Perfect first impression.
01:09What a jerk!
01:10His introduction to Cat doesn't exactly go well.
01:13In fact, she faints at the sight of him and then immediately shrieks when she wakes up.
01:18But, all things considered, this might be Casper's least disastrous face-to-face meeting
01:23with a living person.
01:24Now, see?
01:29Pleasure to meet you, sir.
01:34Between Cat's obliviousness and Casper's nervous excitement, this encounter always brings
01:40the laughs.
01:419.
01:42First Ghostly Trio Encounter
01:44Dr. Harvey specializes in working with the living impaired, so he'd have a totally composed
01:50reaction to Casper, right?
01:52Well, not exactly.
01:54The good doctor screams as soon as he sees the benevolent ghost and starts to flee with
01:59his daughter, but he doesn't actually try to leave.
02:02Oh, my God, this is big.
02:04Um, Dad?
02:05What?
02:07We're in the closet.
02:11Right.
02:12Now, I want you to stay in here, no matter what you hear, okay?
02:15He approaches the other three specters of whipstaff, Casper's so-called uncles, Stretch,
02:20Stinky, and Fatso.
02:22The ghostly trio really put their new therapist through the ringer.
02:26Dr. Harvey tries to fight them off with a plunger, but it's the vacuum cleaner that
02:38really comes in handy.
02:40This cleaning supply brawl is some of the movie's best physical comedy.
02:44We love Bill Pullman in all of his slapstick glory.
02:47No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:50This sucks.
02:56Dad?
02:57Number 8.
02:59Breakfast with the ghosts.
03:00After a chaotic first night in their new haunted home, Kat starts the day with an unexpected
03:05treat from Casper.
03:07Oh, sunny side up kind of makes me yack.
03:10No problem.
03:17The friendly ghost whips up a pretty impressive breakfast as the two get to know each other
03:22and share a sweet moment trying to touch hands.
03:25Dr. Harvey also gets to enjoy the morning meal, but not for long.
03:29Casper's callous uncles barge in, immediately killing the positive mood and ordering their
03:34nephew around.
03:35How dare you serve these air-sucking intruders before us?
03:39I was just giving my meal!
03:45The trio scarfs down delicious-looking pastries stacked on their plates, leaving a big mess
03:51for Casper to clean up.
03:53It's hilarious and gross.
03:54Exactly what one would expect from a 90s kids movie.
03:57Why don't you go ahead and finish your meal, and you can meet in my office, and start the
04:03process of crossing over.
04:07What do you say?
04:07Casper hit theaters on May 26th, 1995, and even though the movie still holds up 30 years
04:19later, many of the pop culture references would likely go right over a Gen Z-er's head.
04:24When the ghostly trio possesses Dr. Harvey, they scare him by morphing his face into different
04:39people, starting with legendary actor-filmmaker Clint Eastwood.
04:43He changes into Rodney Dangerfield, the multi-hyphenate entertainer 90s kids recognize, then becomes
04:49Lethal Weapon star, Mel Gibson, before ending as the Crypt Keeper doing the Home Alone scream.
04:55You think you got it tough?
04:56I got a facelift.
04:57There was one just like it underneath.
05:08Earlier, when Kerrigan employs various paranormal experts, Saturday Night Live alum Don Novello
05:14appears as his father Guido Sarducci character.
05:17However, the most memorable familiar face is Dan Aykroyd, who reprised his iconic Ghostbusters
05:23role as Ray Stantz.
05:28Number 6.
05:29Amber and Vic's Failed Prank
05:31Ever since Kat's first day of school, Amber Whitmire had it out for her.
05:36While Vic is friendly toward the new girl, everyone else wastes no time laughing at Kat.
05:41They also have the audacity to decide on Whip's staff as the new venue for their Halloween
05:45party, never mind how the Harveys feel about it.
05:48Okay, we'll take a vote.
05:50Whoever wants to party at my house, raise your hand.
05:55Whip staff?
05:56Yeah!
05:57Casper got back at them by tying everyone's shoelaces together so they'd trip.
06:02A small victory, but nonetheless entertaining.
06:04Jealous that her peers chose Kat's spooky abode over her house, Amber plans to sabotage the
06:13party.
06:13But as she and an unenthusiastic Vic get ready, the ghostly trio delivers a good scare, sending
06:19them screaming and running right out the door to the delight of their classmates.
06:23Even though Casper is all about ghosts, they're not the actual villains of the story.
06:35The movie's main antagonist is Kerrigan Crittenden, the cruel heiress to Whipstaff Manor, who's
06:42only interested in the alleged treasure hidden inside.
06:45Um, are you sure we're not going a tad overboard here?
06:50Dibs, I have huffed and puffed.
06:52Now I want to rip this place down.
06:53I want my treasure.
06:54They can't haunt a pile of rubble, for Christ's sake.
06:57She and her lawyer Dibs try to kill each other, convinced that one can find the treasure as
07:02a ghost and resurrect themselves with Lazarus.
07:05After falling to her death, Kerrigan re-emerges in spirit form and easily glides through the
07:10vault to nab the treasure chest.
07:12Ah, Kerrigan.
07:15How kind of you to drop in.
07:17You know, if there's one thing I've learned from you, it's always kick them when they're
07:23down.
07:24And baby, you're six feet under.
07:26But she's outsmarted by Casper and Cat, who goad her into admitting she has zero unfinished
07:32business, triggering her crossing over into the afterlife.
07:35I have no unfinished business.
07:38I have my treasure, my mansion.
07:40I have everything.
07:42I'm just perfect.
07:46Wait, wait.
07:48I lied.
07:49I have unfinished business.
07:50Lots of unfinished business.
07:52We just wish Kerrigan had gotten to see that she did all this for assigned baseball.
07:57Number 4.
07:58Casper Resurrects Cat's Dad.
08:00Despite their first couple of interactions, the ghostly trio develops a fondness for Dr.
08:06Harvey.
08:07So much so that they consider making him a permanent fourth member.
08:11Hey, this Dr. Harvey's got a lot of spirit, you know what I'm saying?
08:15Yeah, but he's got his whole miserable life ahead of us.
08:19So we could do him a favor and put him out of his misery.
08:22Yeah, hey, good idea.
08:24Yeah, we've been the ghostly trio long enough.
08:27His genuine affection for them changes their plans to dispatch him.
08:31But as luck would have it, Dr. Harvey falls down an open construction trench outside of
08:36the bar.
08:37When her newly deceased dad returns home as a ghost, Cat is shocked and devastated, having
08:43now lost two parents.
08:56Even though his time being living impaired is brief, the emotional effect it had on his
09:00daughter is painful to watch.
09:03Casper selflessly gives up his one chance at being alive again, using the last of the Lazarus
09:08potion to resurrect her father.
09:10It's a happy yet heart-breaking scene.
09:13Oh, it felt like the strangest dream.
09:16I thought we almost lost each other for a minute there.
09:24Number 3.
09:25JT McFadden's Secret Lab
09:27One of the most talked about but unseen characters in the movie is Casper's late father JT McFadden,
09:33a genius innovator who previously inhabited Whipstaff Manor.
09:37McFadden claimed that he was haunted by the ghost of his dead son, and that he invented
09:42a machine to bring him back to life.
09:44The Lazarus.
09:45After his son's untimely death, McFadden successfully created a machine that could revive the deceased,
09:52which he dubbed the Lazarus.
09:54Casper shows Cat the hidden laboratory, first sending her on a wild ride via the Up and Atom
10:00chair, another invention that's equal parts fun and terrifying.
10:10Like most haunted mansions, Whipstaff as a whole has an eerie vibe, especially the subterranean
10:16lab, which looks like a cross between the Batcave and a Tim Burton movie set.
10:20It's a much needed moment of atmospheric whimsy amid the melancholic tone.
10:25What was that?
10:26The Up and Atom machine.
10:28My dad was a great inventor, but had a little trouble getting going in the morning.
10:32Didn't he ever hear of caffeine?
10:34Number 2.
10:35Casper Remembers His Death
10:37While Casper has plenty of funny moments, the family friendly film is known for being surprisingly
10:43dark at times, unlike his Harvey comics and animated counterparts, the film version of
11:00the titular ghost gets a tragic backstory.
11:04When his father gifted him the sled he wanted, Casper McFadden stayed outside playing with
11:08it for hours, but spending that much time out in the cold led to pneumonia, which sadly ended
11:23his life.
11:24Between the haunting music and Malachi Pearson's emotional delivery, this monologue will always
11:30be truly heartbreaking.

11:56Number 1.
11:58Can I keep you?
11:59Ask anyone who grew up loving Casper, and they'll more than likely mention one specific
12:04quote that stuck with them.
12:06One night, Casper whispers to a sleepy cat,
12:09Can I keep you?
12:11Sure, it's a bit creepy, but we've seen how lonely he is haunting the halls of whipstaff.
12:16Before the Halloween dance, an angel, specifically Amelia Harvey, rewards Casper for resurrecting
12:22Cat's father instead of himself.
12:24The arbitrary Cinderella deal only allows him a short time in physical form, not even until
12:29midnight.
12:30So I have until midnight?
12:32Ten.
12:33Hey, Cinderella got until midnight.
12:37Cinderella wasn't 12 years old.
12:40But he makes the most of it.
12:42Cat unknowingly starts slow dancing with Casper, played by the dreamy Devin Sawa.
12:46While it's a shame she didn't get to see her mom, at least her dad got the closure he needed
12:52with his late wife.
12:53You and Cat loved me so well when I was alive that I have no unfinished business.
12:58Please don't let me be yours.
