England win over Australia overshadowed by “awful” Michelle Agyemang injury

England Women claimed an impressive 3-0 victory over Australia at Pride Park in Derby, in an international friendly, but the win was overshadowed by Michelle Agyemang being stretchered off the pitch towards the end of the game, with what has now confirmed to be a season-ending ACL injury. Sarina Wiegman spoke on that, as well as the victory itself.

00:07stadium on saturday evening england women were back in action this time at pride park in derby

00:14against australia in another friendly and this time the lionesses came out with a positive

00:21result 3-0 was the final score thanks to goals from aggie beaver jones lucy bronze and then the

00:28georgia stanway penalty in stoppage time however the game was overshadowed by an injury to michelle

00:34angiemang in the 80th minute she was stretched off for what has now been confirmed as an acl

00:41rupture serena wiegman spoke after the game um of course i'm happy with the results uh 3-0 uh is a

00:49very good score i think we start really well um dominated the game and played on their half and

00:56if they will come well i want to put them under pressure in possession but also out of possession

01:01or when we would lose the ball and i think that's exactly what we did and of course the game changed

01:06no the game didn't really change they they went down with 10 and which does change a couple of

01:11things we wanted to keep the pace in the game i think we created a lot of very good moments into

01:18the final third and i hope that we are going to improve that um because i think i saw a lot of good

01:24things but we need to get even better aligned better execution and the final pass final cross

01:29and getting there that's what we want to do better you want to see this team develop how difficult is

01:35it to do so against 10 players again like what you should you want a proper challenge yeah of course

01:41that was disappointing and yeah those are the rules like if someone yeah gets you down takes you down

01:46and you go to the goal then that's the red card in a friendly when it's a qualifier i don't care

01:51uh but with a friendly yeah yeah but with a friendly uh of course you actually want to play 11

01:57for 11 because that's those are the challenges you get get the most and that's what you're practicing

02:01for but we tried um to to adapt to that straight away to to force them even more back and of course

02:08they drop even deeper um so the spaces become very small very tight and that that's another challenge

02:15then so and yeah we had hope to do some other things at the end of the game but unfortunately um

02:21we had some injuries i know it's early obviously how is michelle and how concerned are you considering

02:28just just just the fantastic young talent yeah she may have to go through it yeah well of course that

02:35was an awful moment um it doesn't look good and of course we don't know yet because she first needs

02:41to be assessed um but yeah i'm not very positive about what i've seen

02:48thank you thank you um yeah congratulations thank you um i just want to ask about aggie um obviously

02:56there's been a bit of debate about whether or not you know she could start more game three

03:00than she started alongside the lesson today which i thought was interesting to see the two um how did

03:06you think they played obviously with that in up front three but those two particular playing kind

03:11of together yeah well i think there's more connection than those two and they've played there before

03:17also before for example uh belgium away um but um no i think aggie of course we have in our squad we

03:26have three players that could play center forward and they're all three good and all three are very

03:32different center forwards and aki can also play on the on the side um so that's what we wanted to see

03:37today and she's very agile and um scored a nice goal of course uh very agile quick with the ball which uh

03:44today uh was uh in those tight spaces was helped the team and lucia i just thought i had a fantastic

03:52debut she looked really composed i know you weren't surprised about her quality but you may be surprised

03:58at just how comfortable she seemed to be honest i was not really surprised uh because she has done so

04:06well with aston villa the first uh part of the season uh she came in our environment and in although we

04:13didn't have them in training session but straight away you saw her her understanding of the game and

04:19reading the game and connecting with players uh uh very quickly and very well but also keeps things

04:26very simple well it looks simple it's not simple so i i had hoped maybe hoped expect like you never know

04:34exactly when you what you can expect the first game but i i did expect a little bit and i of course i

04:39hoped and i just wanted to go out there and play and enjoy herself and i think that's what she did
