00:00Welcome to our latest video from the Auto Magazine Tuning Blog, where we take a closer
00:11look at the impressive 5th generation of the Mercedes C-Class.
00:15The Mercedes C-Class, a perennial favorite in the Daimler passenger car division, launched
00:21its 5th generation with the W206 Series in 2021 and has impressed ever since with sportier
00:28styling and state-of-the-art technology. As a bestseller in the midsize class, the C-Class
00:34has consistently competed with its traditional rivals, the Audi A4 and BMW 3, especially since
00:40its market launch in June 2021. Interestingly, the current generation of the C-Class is only
00:47available as a mild hybrid with a 4-cylinder engine, which promises not only efficiency
00:52but also dynamism. In addition to the classic sedan, the C-Class
00:57is also once again available as a station wagon, although around two-thirds of C-Class
01:01models sold in Germany are station wagons. The entry-level price for the C-Class is just
01:06over 48,000 euros, which is justified by the advanced technology. The base C-180 model easily
01:14exceeds the 40,000 euros mark and is available from 473,731 euros. The station wagon, which
01:22is particularly popular with Germans, starts at 9,516 euros as the C-80. Further pricing information
01:30is provided in the attached photograph, which clearly shows the various equipment variants
01:35and price ranges. A noticeable change in the new generation is the absence of the classic Mercedes
01:43star on the hood. The design language and proportions of the C-Class are significantly sportier than
01:49those of its predecessors. The front overhang is short and concise, while two power domes
01:56on the hood represent punched muscle that underscores the sporty character. The headlights are slimmer,
02:04giving the vehicle a more dynamic appearance. The low-set radiator grille has been recontored and now
02:12always features a star in the center, as the traditional attached star on the hood is no longer
02:17present. For a stretched and sporty look, the designers pulled the greenhouse back and removed
02:25the chrome strip above the license plate. Instead, the two split taillights ensure high recognition
02:32value and give the rear of the C-Class a more robust appearance. The trunk volume is an impressive 455L,
02:41while the hybrid models offer a further 315L. The station wagon, of course, remains in the range and
02:49is particularly advantageous for those who value additional storage space. Visually, the station wagon,
02:56known at Mercedes as the T-Model, is identical to the sedan up to the B-pillar. However,
03:02the station wagon has been extended in length by a good 9cm. The wheelbase has grown by 25mm and the
03:09width by 10mm, resulting in a more comfortable interior. Despite its sporty lines, the station
03:16wagon has lost a little height. However, this loss of height is minimal and has hardly any impact on the
03:22space available in the interior. A significant increase is evident in the trunk volume, which has
03:28been increased by 30L with both the rear seats up and folded down. Overall, the cargo compartment of
03:36the station wagon offers a volume of 490L, which can be expanded to a maximum of 1510L. In plug-in hybrids,
03:45the trunk volume is slightly reduced due to the battery pack in the underbody, but still offers
03:50between 360 and 1,375L of storage space. A particular highlight of the current C-Class is the C-Class Coupe,
03:59which will be known in the future as the CLE. Mercedes originally planned to forgo a Coupe or
04:05convertible version of the C-Class. But instead, the CLE was created, replacing the two-door variants of
04:13the C and E-Class and combining them into a standalone model. The CE differs from the current C-Class both
04:20visually and in terms of dimensions. The new Sharknose further extends the front design, and the radiator
04:27grille opens significantly downwards. The design is partly based on the CLA, but remains unique in its
04:34appearance. In terms of dimensions, the Coupe is positioned between the C-Class and the new E-Class.
04:42With a length of 4.80 meters, it sits exactly between the two sedans. There is also an increase
04:50in width of 40 millimeters, while the height is slightly lower at 1.43 meters. The wheelbase remains
04:57identical to the C-Class, ensuring consistent driving dynamics. There's also good news for all open-air
05:04enthusiasts. The CLE is also scheduled to be launched as a convertible in summer 2024. One of the biggest
05:12revolutions in the new C-Class concerns the engine compartment. In the W206 generation, Mercedes works
05:18exclusively with four-cylinder engines. All engines combine a 48-volt electrical system with an integrated
05:25starter generator that transfers its power directly to the crankshaft. This configuration enables the C-Class
05:33to drive efficiently while delivering a boost of 15 kilowatts and 200 newton-meters of torque during
05:39sprints. Energy is automatically recuperated during braking, further increasing efficiency.
05:46The 9-tick automatic transmission is also standard, and the C-Class completely dispenses with manual
05:53transmissions. The diesel engine in the new C-Class features a new crankshaft that increases displacement.
05:59Two water-cooled turbochargers with variable turbine geometry give the diesel engine impressive
06:05performance, which is manifested in three power levels. 163 horsepower, 200 horsepower, and 265
06:14horsepower for the diesel version. The C220D is also available with all-wheel drive on request,
06:21providing additional grip and safety. Two four-cylinder gasoline engines are available,
06:26each with a displacement of 1.5L and 2.0L. Power outputs range from 170 horsepower in the C180 to
06:35204 horsepower in the C200 and 258 horsepower in the C300. The latter two engines are also available
06:44with all-wheel drive, underscoring the versatility of the C-Class. In addition to the traditional combustion
06:51engines, the W206 also offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The C300E sedan can travel over 100
07:00kilometers on electric power alone, thanks to its 129 horsepower all-electric drive. The station wagon
07:07can travel 107 kilometers according to the WLTP test. The electric drive can be used up to a speed of
07:14140 kilometers per hour. The 25.4-watt-hour battery can be charged via direct current and should be fully
07:22charged in about 30 minutes with a 55-kilowatt DC charger. The combustion engine is the 204-horsepower
07:29M254 gasoline engine, producing a system output of 313 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. The top AMG
07:39models are also included. The new C-Class will once again be offered as an AMG variant, including the
07:45entry-level AMG 43 and the C63S. The latter, however, bears the E-performance suffix, indicating the switch
07:54to a plug-in hybrid with a turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor. The M139 engine, already used in
08:02the AMG variants of the A-Class, produces an impressive 476 horsepower in the 2-liter unit.
08:09Combined with the electric motor, the C63SI performance achieves an impressive system output
08:15of 680 horsepower and a maximum system torque of 1120 Nm.
08:19All-wheel drive and the typical Mercedes-AMG look with its Pan American radiator grille and quad pipe
08:27exhaust system round out the sporty appearance. In the interior of the new C-Class, Mercedes has opted
08:34for a revolutionary layout that is heavily influenced by the Mercedes S-Class. At 1.80 meters wide,
08:41the C-Class is now one centimeter wider than before. The extended wheelbase and wider body contribute to
08:49generous interior space. The trunk volume in the station wagon has grown by 30 liters, providing
08:56additional storage space. A standout feature of the current C-Class is the interior, which,
09:02thanks to the new cockpit architecture, is a direct result of the S-Class layout. Analog instruments are a
09:09thing of the past. Instead, a screen in front of the steering wheel serves as the instrument cluster
09:14and offers all the familiar display options. A giant, vertically mounted display protrudes seamlessly
09:21from the center console to operate the infotainment and climate functions. Unlike in the S-Class,
09:29this central display is tilted six degrees toward the driver's seat, giving the C-Class a sportier sense of
09:35space. The slimmer dashboard design underscores the modern and light atmosphere in the interior.
09:44Another highlight are the armrests, which extend forward like diving boards in an outdoor pool and
09:49can be used as a closing aid. This detail contributes significantly to the airy feeling of space in the
09:55front seats. Shoulder room in the front seats has been increased by 26 millimeters. In the rear, taller
10:03passengers benefit from 35 millimeters more near them, ideal for long journeys. As a used car,
10:10the Mercedes C-Class generally proves to be a solid choice. The two previous generations always received
10:17good tube ratings. The direct predecessor, the W205, in particular, had no problems obtaining a type
10:25sticker. The only drawback for used car buyers is the high price. However, with the W204, a closer look at
10:34the axles is recommended to ensure you get a solid vehicle at what is now an attractive price.
