President Marcos is back in Manila after attending the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he joined the official turnover ceremony of the ASEAN chairship for 2026 and discussed regional and global challenges, including the West Philippine Sea.

The President arrived at 2:55 a.m. at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

00:00Magandang araw! I have just attended the 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
00:07The summit was once again an opportunity to discuss among our fellow ASEAN member states and partners
00:13how to navigate our future together amidst the various geopolitical and economic challenges
00:19that we face domestically, bilaterally, regionally, and globally.
00:23We discussed significant international issues that emerging challenges that not only impact our peoples
00:29and our nation, but also the entire region, especially the West Philippine Sea.
00:35I reaffirm that the Philippines will continue to remain firm, calm, and resolute
00:40in defending our sovereignty, our sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea
00:46in accordance with, of course, international law.
00:49We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with all countries who share our values
00:54and our commitment to peace, to stability, and to economic progress.
00:59The leaders and I also discussed the ongoing situation in Myanmar and the implementation
01:04of the Five-Point Consensus to bring about a peaceful and lasting solution, which is Myanmar-owned
01:10and Myanmar-led.
01:12During this past 47th summit, we welcomed the full accession of Tumur Leshde as the 11th member of ASEAN.
01:19This is a historic step that reaffirms ASEAN's commitment to unity and inclusivity.
01:25We remain committed to pursuing initiatives that will support Timur Leshde's capacity to assume
01:31its obligations as a full member of ASEAN, with the end goal of further building a people-centered ASEAN.
01:38The leaders and I spoke about future-proofing our region through economic cooperation
01:43and sustainable growth.
01:44We heard discussions from the IMF, from the BRICS Group, from G20, amongst others.
01:50We reaffirmed ASEAN's collective commitment to rules-based, open, inclusive, transparent,
01:56and non-discriminatory multilateral system.
01:58We strengthened our trade with external partners with upgrades in the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement,
02:05amendments in our free trade agreements, and utilization of the Regional Comprehensive
02:10Economic Partnership, or RCEP.
02:12At a time when the rules-based trading system faces significant challenges,
02:17these agreements will provide transparency, stability, and predictability,
02:22key foundations for building confidence among businesses and investors,
02:27and for sustaining ASEAN's role as a driver of regional and global growth.
02:32This economic development goes hand-in-hand with strengthening the social-cultural community.
02:38We discussed the progress achieved and the actions moving forward for the environment,
02:42climate change, education, green jobs, and health.
02:46During this summit, the ASEAN leaders and I met with our counterparts from the United States,
02:51from Japan, India, China, the Republic of Korea, the United Nations, New Zealand, Australia.
02:57I highlighted the progress of our dialogue partnerships and how we envisioned the way forward together.
03:03On the sidelines of the summit, I met leaders and discussed ways to further strengthen our partnerships
03:08and expand cooperation in strategic areas.
03:11I met with the leaders of Cambodia, Canada, Thailand, Japan, the EU, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand,
03:19and with the United Nations Secretary-General.
03:21We reaffirmed our commitment to deepen bilateral relations and discussed cooperation in many fields of mutual interest,
03:29fields such as security and defense, maritime, climate action, trade, investment, agriculture,
03:36and people-to-people relations.
03:38And I thank them for expressing their support for our ASEAN chairship in 2026.
03:44The Philippine delegation and I are grateful to Malaysia, the chair of ASEAN this year,
03:49and our generous host for the successful 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits and 2025 chairship of ASEAN.
03:57During the closing ceremony of the summits, Malaysia turned over the ASEAN chairship to us.
04:03As the 2026 Chair of ASEAN, the Philippines looks forward to building on the gains of Malaysia's
04:11inclusivity and sustainability theme and carry ASEAN forward as we, as is our theme, navigate our future together.
