President Marcos Jr. has vowed to uphold the Philippines’ commitment to a rules-based international order and the peaceful resolution of disputes in the region as he left for Kuala Lumpur for the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits.
00:00The Philippines fully supports Malaysia's chairship this year and its vision of an ASEAN that promotes meaningful and inclusive and sustainable development.
00:09At this summit, I will join fellow ASEAN leaders in reaffirming our commitment to ASEAN centrality as we navigate pressing regional and global challenges,
00:20including developments in the South China Sea, the situation in Myanmar, threats to regional peace and maritime security,
00:28as well as the far-reaching impacts of climate change, economic volatility, and transnational crime.
00:37I will continue to champion our advocacies in promoting an open, inclusive, and rules-based international order,
00:45and for the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.
00:50I will also highlight the Philippines' commitment to rules-based multilateral trading system, a vital compass,
00:58as we navigate today's complex geo-economic challenges.
01:03During these summits, we will also welcome Timor-Leste as the newest member of ASEAN.
01:10Further, Malaysia will be turning over the ASEAN chairship to the Philippines,
01:15marking the symbolic beginning of our turn as chair.
01:21As always, our participation in the ASEAN Summit reaffirms our dedication to deepening regional cooperation
01:29and to advancing the well-being of every Filipino in the entire Southeast Asian community.
01:37The strength of ASEAN depends on the individual strength and prosperity of its members.
