00:00As a massive Category 5 hurricane churns over Jamaica, officials are warning the public
00:05to not believe everything they see.
00:07Hurricane Melissa is expected to be the strongest storm on record to ever strike the island,
00:12with winds spurring up to 185 miles per hour, terrifying locals with extremely powerful winds
00:19and sustained torrential rain.
00:21While the small island nation is getting hit by the historic storm, dramatic videos are
00:25circulating online purportedly showing the devastation.
00:29Flooding at an airport in Kingston,
00:37Floodwaters rushing through Jamaican city streets,
00:49the ominous eye of the supposed hurricane as seen from an airplane window,
00:56and a man surfing flooding water in a man-made ditch.
01:01The only problem is the videos aren't real.
01:04We have many of our ministers here with you to give you the information, the correct information.
01:11I am in so many WhatsApp groups, and I see all of these videos coming.
01:17Many of them are fake.
01:19And so we urge you to please listen to the official channels.
01:23Some of the fake videos, many of them AI-generated, are watermarked with Sora, an AI text-to-video generator.
01:30A series of realistic-looking, unauthorized deepfake videos hit social media after OpenAI launched,
01:37the upgraded Sora 2 on September 30th, sparking complaints that it was using the voices and images of celebrities,
01:44without proper credit or compensation.
01:46Celebrities, including Breaking Bad star Brian Cranston, even brought up the issue to SAG-AFTRA,
01:52after the actor popped up in a fake video that showed him taking a selfie with Michael Jackson.
01:57The tech giant even blocked users from creating deepfakes of Martin Luther King Jr.,
02:02after his estate blasted what it described as disrespectful depictions of the late civil rights icon.
02:08But how hard is it to know if a video is AI-generated?
02:11Supposedly, it's pretty tough.
02:13The post went to Times Square in July to see if both locals and tourists could tell the difference between real models
02:19and fake AI-generated bots.
02:21The results were pretty shocking.
02:23That looks real to me.
02:25She's an AI bot.
02:26I pray you're going to make me look like an idiot out here today.
02:29Mmm, real.
02:31She's fake.
02:32What?
02:33After showing each participant three snaps of real-life influencers
02:36and three of computer-generated AI models, and asking them to guess which was which,
02:41not a single person was able to guess all six correctly.
02:44Fake, man. That's AI, man. That's AI.
02:47That's real.
02:48Oh, my.
02:49The old adage, don't trust everything you see on the internet, still holds true.
