00:04In his first major interview since becoming Pope,

00:07Leo XIV expressed unease over some things happening in the United States.

00:12Leo, who was elected in May, sat down with Elise Allen,

00:15senior correspondent at Crux, for her upcoming biography,

00:19Leo XIV, Citizen of the World, Missionary of the 21st Century.

00:24Leo says he will not participate in politics.

00:27He emphasized a letter sent earlier this year by Pope Francis to U.S. bishops

00:31in which Francis strongly opposed the Trump administration's deportation plans.

00:36I was very happy to see how the American bishops picked that up,

00:39and some of them were courageous enough to go with that, he said.

00:42While he praised their courage,

00:44Leo said that he will not participate in partisan politics

00:47and explained it's the role of U.S. church leaders

00:50to speak with President Donald Trump's team.

00:53Pope Leo XIV said some things in the U.S. are concerning.

00:57Although he hasn't had contact with Trump,

00:59he noted that his brother, Louis Provost,

01:02had met with the president at the White House.

01:05He described being very close to his brothers,

01:07despite differing political views.

01:09He said there are some things going on in the United States that are of concern,

01:14adding that sometimes decisions are made more based on economics

01:17than on human dignity and human support.

01:20Leo says he will challenge Trump if needed.

01:22He said he is ready to raise issues and challenge Trump if needed,

01:26while also wanting to support him in efforts to

01:29promote peace in the world.

01:31The Pope pointed to his American background

01:33as an advantage over his Argentine predecessor.

01:36The fact that I am American means, among other things,

01:39people can't say, like they did about Francis.

01:42He doesn't understand the United States.

01:44He just doesn't see what's going on.

01:47Leo also discussed clerical abuse in the church.

01:49He also described issues within the church,

01:52including clerical abuse, as a real crisis.

01:56He called for the church to show deep sensitivity and compassion for victims.

02:01However, he warned against making abuse the center focus of the church.

02:06He emphasized that the rights of the accused must be protected

02:08and acknowledged that false accusations do occur.
