00:04No one has ever been charged in Madeleine McCann's 2007 disappearance,

00:09but Christian Bruckner, named as the prime suspect in 2020,

00:13was recently released from a German prison after serving seven years for an unrelated crime.

00:18He has denied any involvement in the three-year-old's disappearance

00:21from her parents' vacation apartment in Portugal over 18 years ago.

00:25Despite prosecutors calling him dangerous and their only suspect,

00:28lead prosecutor Hans-Christian Wolters admitted they lack sufficient evidence for charges.

00:34We have evidence against him, but in our view,

00:36it's not strong enough to make a guilty verdict likely, Wolters said.

00:40Upon release, Bruckner's passport was canceled.

00:42He's electronically tagged, must declare residence,

00:45and cannot leave Germany without permission.

00:48Investigators still worry he could flee since passports aren't required within mainland Europe.
