00:00Major new search into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
00:03will commence in Portugal across more than 20 sites.
00:09While German police are on the hunt for fresh evidence
00:12against the prime suspect and convicted paedophile Christian Bruckner.
00:16This is the first really extensive search for Madeleine since 2008.
00:21Well, it comes as Bruckner is due to be released from prison in September
00:25after being jailed in 2019.
00:27He has denied any involvement in the disappearance.
00:30Let's speak to former Detective Chief Superintendent
00:34of the Metropolitan Police, Kevin Hurley, on this matter.
00:40Kevin, do you think there's much hope with this one?
00:44What's different this time round?
00:48Well, it's an interesting development.
00:50And if I was coming at this from, if you like, a coppice perspective,
00:54I would think this Christian B is a right wrong-un in the minds of the German police.
01:01And they may have picked up some information from cellmates or so on
01:06about what he's been up to.
01:08And this may be an attempt by the German police to keep this guy in prison
01:13so he's not a threat to women and girls generally in Germany.
01:18So I'm not sure...
01:18Of course, he'll disappear after he's released from prison this time.
01:24Exactly. So I'm not sure whether this is a desperate attempt by the German police
01:30to try and find some more stuff to keep him in custody with or not,
01:37because it's unlikely they've suddenly come up with some new information.
01:43But it might be they've done some analysis in conjunction with the Portuguese
01:46as to potential body dump sites.
01:50And they want to give that last stab.
01:52But I see this almost as more as a protective issue by the Germans
01:57to keep this guy locked up,
01:59other than something I'd be desperately excited about.
02:04I hate to say it for the unfortunate McCann family.
02:06Probably.
02:06Probably.
02:07Hopefully.
02:07Bye.
02:22Bye.
02:22Bye.
02:24Bye.
02:24Bye.
02:34Bye.
