00:03Hundreds of federal employees who lost their jobs in Elon Musk

00:16The GSA, created in the 1940s to manage federal workplaces,

00:20was one of the main targets of the Department of Government efficiency,

00:24led by Musk.

00:25Thousands of employees left under buyout or early retirement programs

00:29while hundreds were dismissed.

00:31Ultimately, the outcome was the agency was left broken and understaffed,

00:35said Chad Becker, a former GSA official.

00:39They didn't have the people they needed to carry out basic functions.

00:42Doge pushed the GSA to cancel nearly half of its 7,500 federal leases

00:47and sell hundreds of government buildings,

00:50initially projecting $460 million in savings.

00:54Estimates were later reduced to $140 million.

00:57Problems arose as 131 leases expired while agencies still occupied the spaces

01:03and over 480 leases marked for termination were spared.

01:07Representative Greg Stanton argued there is no evidence the cuts delivered any savings.

01:12Instead, it's created costly confusion while undermining services taxpayers depend on.

01:17Other agencies, including the IRS, Labor Department, and National Park Service,

01:22have begun similar reinstatements.

01:25The Government Accountability Office is now investigating the GSA's workforce decisions

01:30and lease cancellations.

01:32With employees now being asked to return,

01:34the effort shows how far the cuts went

01:35and how difficult unwinding them has been for taxpayers.
