Hegseth enforcing new media policy at the Pentagon and dismissing outlets that won't sign off.
00:06
The Pentagon decided to treat the press like grown-ups, and the media elite lost their minds.
00:12
All Pete Hegseth did was roll out a basic standardized access policy that basically says,
00:17
wear a badge, follow the rules, don't solicit espionage, and act like you're not above national security protocols.
00:24
Seems reasonable enough.
00:26
Unless, of course, you're the Washington Post, the Atlantic, or the New York Times,
00:31
in which case this is apparently the end of democracy as we know it.
00:34
Now, a war secretary says, hey, maybe follow the same rules we make everyone else follow.
00:39
Matt Murray of WIPO gave us the expected hand-wringing about unnecessary constraints.
00:44
Instead, they're being asked to sign a memo that basically says,
00:47
don't endanger national security while you're snooping around the Pentagon.
00:50
Then came Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, declaring that the policy violates First Amendment rights.
00:56
Just a single emoji that says everything the American people already feel.
01:01
We're done with your drama.
01:03
This isn't about transparency.
01:05
It's about entitlement.
01:07
But here's where it gets interesting.
01:09
Some conservative outlets, yes, even Newsmax and the Wall Street Journal, are suddenly uncomfortable too.
01:15
Still, let's not conflate this with censorship.
01:19
It's the Pentagon saying, we're done playing by your rules.
01:23
Now, you play by ours.
01:24
Here's what the press doesn't want to admit.
01:27
They still have access.
01:29
And for that, the self-appointed defenders of the First Amendment are acting like they just got thrown in the brig.
01:34
Hegseth's little mic drop moment at the end.
01:37
Pentagon access is a privilege, not a right.
01:39
If the media wants access to one of the most sensitive facilities on the planet, maybe, just maybe,
01:46
they should be held to the same standard as the 19-year-old private mopping the floor outside the Situation Room.
01:52
But hey, maybe that's too much to ask from journalists who've spent the last decade acting like they're auditioning for a West Wing reboot.
01:59
It's whether the media can handle being treated like everyone else,
02:02
or whether their addiction to special treatment will finally come crashing down under the weight of a security badge.
02:07
And something tells me he's not the one who's going to blink first.
