00:00Prince Philip intimidated royal staff. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea.
00:05Butler Grant Harreld, who worked for the British royal family for seven years,
00:09documented his experience in his memoir, The Royal Butler.
00:13In a new interview, Harreld opened up about Prince Philip's waggish conduct inside the walls of the royal estates.
00:20He would come out with these classic lines and then follow up with a swear word or something, Harreld said.
00:25Other butlers were hesitant to approach the prince when Harreld spotted him.
00:28They were a bit nervous of him, Harreld explained.
00:32He was blunt. He wasn't everyone's cup of tea, if I can say that.
00:35But I adored Prince Philip. That's what I liked about him.
00:38I liked the fact that he didn't suffer fools. And he did speak his mind.
00:42Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II shared joy in their blunt humor.
00:46Perpetually in hot water over his inappropriate comments, Prince Philip was a hoot to be around, Harreld explained.
00:52With a permanent glint in his eye, Philip was the rock that kept Queen Elizabeth smiling.
00:57Although on one occasion she was horrified when a family member remarked on her flawless complexion and Philip piped up,
01:03Yes. And she's like that all over.
01:06In his memoir, Harreld recounted Philip's reaction to the wedding ceremony, writing,
01:11When Prince Philip came out, he turned to the Queen and said,
01:14Thank F. That's over.
01:16Harreld said when he began working for the royals in 2004, he quickly learned the prince would say it as it was.
01:21He continued, He didn't hold back. He was well known for using his alternative words.
01:26Let's put it that way. That's how he was.
