00:00Australia plans to build world's largest renewable energy hub featuring 60 million
00:05solar panels.
00:07On the far southeastern edge of Western Australia, a group of partners is planning to build the
00:11Western Green Energy Hub, a massive clean energy project on the Nulubor plain.
00:17The hub will harness wind and sun to create green hydrogen and ammonia for heavy industry
00:22and shipping.
00:23If successful, Western Green Energy Hub will produce approximately 70 gigawatts of combined
00:29solar and wind power, and 5.4 million tons of green hydrogen annually, exceeding many
00:35countries' entire power systems.
00:38The project partners include Intercontinental Energy, CWP Global, and Merning Green Energy
00:43Limited, owned by the indigenous Merning people, making them part owners of the initiative.
00:48Currently, the project exists only on paper, with developers working through studies, community
00:54engagement and regulatory approvals.
00:56They aim for a final investment decision by 2029, with construction in phases thereafter.
01:02Environmental concerns include the delicate ecosystems of the region, which features underground
01:07waterways, cave networks, and unique species.
01:10The remote location also presents logistical challenges for construction and maintenance.
01:15The potential benefits include reduced industrial emissions by replacing fossil-based fuels and establishing
01:21a model where indigenous landowners have equity and consent rights.
01:25However, success depends on protecting the environment and maintaining indigenous community support.
