00:30I don't believe in censorship in any form.
00:35Catherine Bigelow Director, artist, writer, and producer
00:43Catherine Bigelow was born on November 27, 1951 in San Carlos, California.
00:50Known for her incredible visuals and heart-pounding action sequences, Catherine Bigelow is one
00:55of today's most fascinating directors.
00:59Bigelow was inspired in part by her father, who liked to draw cartoons.
01:04Bigelow studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute after finishing high school.
01:10Winning a scholarship, she then moved to New York City to attend the independent study program
01:15at the Whitney Museum of Art in 1972.
01:19Bigelow eventually changed her focus to another visual medium, film.
01:24She made her first short movie, The Setup, in 1978.
01:29The film explored the topic of violence, which would become a recurring theme in her work.
01:34She earned her master's degree in film theory and criticism from Columbia University in 1979,
01:41and moved on to feature-length projects.
01:44In 1981, Bigelow created The Loveless, featuring Willem Dafoe, which was partly inspired by her
01:51love of the 1954 classic film The Wild Ones.
01:56The movie earned critical acclaim, but she attracted more notice for her next effort,
02:01Near Dark, 1987, a vampire tale set in the American West.
02:08Bigelow's next project was 1991's Point Break, starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.
02:15Reeves played an FBI agent trying to capture a gang of surf-loving bank robbers led by Swayze's
02:22character.
02:23She worked on the film with her husband, director James Cameron, who was known at the time for
02:28such blockbuster films as The Terminator and Aliens.
02:33Bigelow again earned kudos for her visual aesthetic.
02:36Critics enjoyed the action scenes, but panned the film's weak dialogue.
02:41That same year, Bigelow's marriage to Cameron ended.
02:45After directing some episodes of the television crime drama Homicide, Life on the Streets, Bigelow
02:51worked on another thriller, The Weight of Water, 2000, with Catherine McCormick, Sarah
02:57Pauley, and Sean Penn.
02:59She then took on a real-life drama with 2002's K-19, The Widowmaker, starring Harrison Ford
03:06and Liam Neeson.
03:08Set in 1961, the film tackled a historical disaster that took place on a Russian nuclear submarine.
03:16Returning to television, Bigelow directed episodes of the crime drama Karen Sisko and The Inside.
03:23She had helped develop The Inside, a crime drama about FBI agents hunting serial killers,
03:29from an article written by journalist Mark Boll.
03:31She and Boll later joined forces to create The Hurt Locker , one of her most critically
03:37acclaimed feature films.
03:40The Hurt Locker was drawn from Boll's experiences covering the Iraq War.
03:45The film tells the story of an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, led by Staff Sergeant
03:50William James, played by Jeremy Renner.
03:53I was fascinated by his stories, by the idea that these bomb technicians are always walking
03:59toward the thing that everybody else is running away from.
04:02It's kind of an epic, lonely walk that only the man in the bomb suit performs.
04:07Bigelow explained to Marie Claire magazine,
04:10The Hurt Locker was lauded by critics for its suspenseful action and realistic depiction
04:15of soldiers during wartime.
04:18A critic for The New Yorker described the film as,
04:21the most skillful and emotionally involving film yet made about the conflict, a small classic
04:28of tension, bravery and fear.
04:31The Hurt Locker won numerous awards, including BAFTA Honors for Best Director and Best Film.
04:38Additionally, Bigelow won an Academy Award for Best Director for her work on the film,
04:43becoming the first woman to receive this honor.
