00:00:00You
00:00:30You
00:00:55Hello, Bob the Builder here. Do you know what I'm standing in front of?
00:01:00It's got walls and a roof
00:01:03Windows and a front door
00:01:07It's a house today. We're going on site to learn how they're built
00:01:15Hi Rolly hello everyone else, too
00:01:17It's my friend bird and all his friends, too
00:01:21They want to find out about houses, Bob because houses are like nests
00:01:26You go to sleep in them at night
00:01:28And sit in them to look after your eggs in the daytime
00:01:32I suppose houses are a bit like nests
00:01:34And to find out how to build a house, let's go on site
00:01:39Rock and roll
00:01:43This is my computer. I'm going to show you some films on it
00:01:47They'll tell us everything we need to know
00:01:49Ready everyone?
00:01:50Whoo!
00:01:51First, you need a plan
00:01:54This is a little film of me making plans
00:01:58Every time I build something I make a plan first
00:02:01Sometimes I put the plan up on this special display board so everyone can see it
00:02:06Sometimes I draw my plan on a sheet of paper and sometimes I look up plans in this special book
00:02:13It tells me everything I need to know about what I'm going to build
00:02:17Here's a plan of a house
00:02:19And here's a plan of the sunflower factory I built in sunflower valley
00:02:24Even though I've built lots of buildings, whenever I build something new, I always make a plan
00:02:31That way I can always see exactly how everything is put together
00:02:35You have to draw plans very carefully so everyone can see where everything goes
00:02:41Here I am, drawing
00:02:42I'm trying to make everything really, really clear
00:02:45I'm not drawing a plan though, I'm drawing a picture of mountains and a valley
00:02:49What do you think?
00:02:54Here's Wendy drawing a plan
00:02:56It's a plan of a house
00:02:58It's really clear, isn't it?
00:03:01Can you see what I'm doing?
00:03:04I'm building a model
00:03:06A model is a special plan that's extra clear
00:03:09It's not just a drawing, it shows you exactly where everything is going to go
00:03:14This is a model of the whole of sunflower valley
00:03:18Now let's go on site
00:03:23To see a plan for building a house
00:03:25Here's a plan of a house
00:03:29The man who drew it is called an architect
00:03:32And he's pointing to where everything is
00:03:34You can see the house from above in this drawing
00:03:37It's like being a bird in the sky looking down on it
00:03:40This is the house, this is the kitchen, this is the living room and this is the bathroom
00:03:45It's all set out in the plan
00:03:48In this drawing you can see the front of the house
00:03:51You can see the walls and the roof and the doors and windows
00:03:55It's all carefully drawn out in the plan
00:03:58Now let's see how the plan is used on site
00:04:02These builders are building a house
00:04:05One of them has a plan in his hand, can you see?
00:04:08Here they are looking at the plan to see where everything should go
00:04:13They're looking at it very carefully to make sure they've got everything right
00:04:17This builder's using the plan too
00:04:20He's taking it with him while he works on the roof
00:04:23That way he can check it whenever he needs to
00:04:26So if you want to build a house, you need a plan
00:04:30It shows you how everything fits together
00:04:33So, we found out about plans
00:04:36Now let's look at how houses are built
00:04:39There are three stages to building a house
00:04:42Stage one, foundations
00:04:46Stage two, walls
00:04:50Stage three, roof
00:04:55Can we build it?
00:04:57Yes we can!
00:04:59Right then, let's get started
00:05:02Oh, hello little truck
00:05:05Do you want to help too?
00:05:08I'm sure I'll think of something for you to do
00:05:11Okay, it's time for stage one, foundations
00:05:16To make foundations, you dig a big hole in the ground
00:05:19And fill it with concrete
00:05:21Here's Scoop and Muck digging the big hole now
00:05:25Foundations have to be really strong to hold the house up
00:05:29Thanks you two!
00:05:31Next, we need lots of concrete to fill it in
00:05:34Hello Tumbler!
00:05:36Oh, hello again little truck
00:05:39Have I thought of something for you to do?
00:05:42Well, you could fetch more cement for Tumbler to make concrete with
00:05:47Vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom
00:05:49That was quick!
00:05:51Thanks Tumbler!
00:05:53Thanks little truck!
00:05:55Once the concrete's in the hole, it takes a whole week to dry
00:06:00But then, it's really hard
00:06:03Strong enough to hold up a house
00:06:05It's time for stage two, walls
00:06:09To build the walls, first you need a frame
00:06:12The frame is made of big wooden beams
00:06:15They're put together to make the shape of the house
00:06:18Thanks Lofty!
00:06:20Once the frame is finished, we put panels of wood around it to make the walls
00:06:25Hello again little truck, looking for something else to do?
00:06:28Vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom
00:06:30You could fetch more wood
00:06:31Vroom vroom vroom vroom
00:06:33Thanks little truck!
00:06:35Now the wooden walls are finished, we cover them with concrete to make them strong and hard
00:06:42Thanks Tumbler!
00:06:44So, that's stage two done, walls
00:06:47Now it's time for stage three
00:06:50The roof!
00:06:51The roof is made from wooden beams too
00:06:54Thanks Lofty!
00:06:56Vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom
00:06:58Little truck!
00:07:00Well, this time I really have got a job for you
00:07:04The roof isn't finished yet, there are still gaps between the beams
00:07:08We need some tiles to cover them up
00:07:10Will you collect them for us?
00:07:12Vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom vroom
00:07:15Woohoo! You are quick little truck
00:07:17Tiles go on the roof to keep the rain and weather out
00:07:21And that's the roof finished!
00:07:23We've done all three stages
00:07:25Foundations, walls, roof
00:07:28You know what, little truck?
00:07:31There might be just one more thing this house needs.
00:07:35Yes, a garage.
00:07:38For you, little truck.
00:07:40Yes, thanks for all your help.
00:07:43So now we know the three stages of building a house.
00:07:47Of course, there is one other thing you need before you can even start.
00:07:51What's that, bub?
00:07:52A good, clear sight-rolly.
00:07:55And for that you need...
00:07:57DEMOLITION
00:07:59Sometimes, when there's a building that nobody needs anymore,
00:08:05you have to knock it down.
00:08:06When you do that, it's called demolition.
00:08:10Buildings are very strong,
00:08:12so you need special equipment to knock them down,
00:08:14like lofty's claw.
00:08:17It's hard work demolishing brick walls.
00:08:19They're held together by cement, so they need to be pulled apart.
00:08:24Here I am, demolishing the wall of a house.
00:08:27First of all, I took off the wallpaper.
00:08:30Then it was time to knock through those bricks.
00:08:33I needed a big hammer to help me do it.
00:08:36When we've knocked bricks down, always try and store them somewhere safe,
00:08:41because we might want to use them again one day
00:08:43to be part of another building.
00:08:45So that's demolishing.
00:08:47We knocked down one building that no one wants
00:08:49so that we can build another one that's much better.
00:08:52I think we should go on site again and find out more about demolition.
00:08:57This digger is going to do some demolition now.
00:09:02It's demolishing an old house that no one lives in anymore,
00:09:05so a new one can be built where it used to be.
00:09:08Knocking down a house is heavy work.
00:09:11You need a big, powerful machine like a digger to do it.
00:09:14There's the driver.
00:09:15He's controlling the digger,
00:09:17so it knocks down the house safely.
00:09:19You can't do it all at once.
00:09:20You have to do it a little bit at a time.
00:09:25There goes one wall.
00:09:27And there goes a bit of the roof.
00:09:34That builder's spraying water onto the old house to keep the dust down.
00:09:39When you demolish a house, you make a lot of dust.
00:09:45And there's the last bit of the house, about to be demolished.
00:09:50There it goes.
00:09:57There.
00:09:58All done.
00:10:00I think we should have another look at that.
00:10:02Don't you?
00:10:02Now the site's clear, it's time for stage one.
00:10:26Foundations!
00:10:27Here's a little film of some of my machines.
00:10:33What sort of machines do we need for building foundations?
00:10:36We need to dig big holes, don't we?
00:10:39So which of my machines is good at digging?
00:10:43Scoop!
00:10:43He's very good at digging.
00:10:45He's got a big scoop at the front and a little one behind.
00:10:47That's called a backhoe digger.
00:10:50Scoop does all sorts of digging job for me.
00:10:53Once, he even dug out the side of a whole hill.
00:10:56He piled the earth up really carefully.
00:11:04Scoop's a very strong, careful digger.
00:11:07And which machine is this?
00:11:10He's got a really big digger.
00:11:12It's Muck.
00:11:14Muck's good at digging up lots and lots of earth really quickly.
00:11:18He often works with Scoop.
00:11:22When there's a really big digging job that has to be finished quickly, Scoop and Muck work
00:11:27together.
00:11:27And the job gets done.
00:11:29Here's another machine I need to build foundations.
00:11:34Can you remember what happens after we've dug the big holes?
00:11:37Right.
00:11:38We pour in concrete.
00:11:40And this machine's really good at concrete pouring.
00:11:43Do you know who it is?
00:11:44It's Tumbler.
00:11:47Just look at all that concrete.
00:11:49And who's this?
00:11:51It's Dizzy, my cement mixer.
00:11:54Let's go back on site and look at some more machines.
00:11:59Here we are, on site.
00:12:01And here's a really big digger.
00:12:05Look, it can reach all the way down into that deep hole.
00:12:10There's the driver.
00:12:11This digger is very strong, so the driver has to make sure it digs in exactly the right
00:12:16place.
00:12:18All the earth should go in the right place too, into that truck, ready to be driven away.
00:12:29This digger really is very big.
00:12:36Look at all the earth it can carry in its shovel.
00:12:38This digger is much smaller, but it's very useful too, for digging smaller holes.
00:12:48That's why it's got a smaller shovel.
00:12:49That bit of digging's finished, so off it goes, to dig somewhere else.
00:12:58Here's another machine.
00:12:59It's a concrete pouring truck, like Tumbler.
00:13:03It pours concrete into this long pipe.
00:13:12The concrete goes along the pipe and pours out where the builders want it to.
00:13:23There goes the concrete, right where it's needed.
00:13:27Those are the machines we need.
00:13:32Now we can see the foundations being built.
00:13:35Let's go on site.
00:13:40Here are the foundations all finished.
00:13:43They're very big, aren't they?
00:13:46Let's see how they were built.
00:13:48First of all, a digger digs holes in the earth.
00:13:52It digs long, deep, narrow holes, called trenches.
00:13:58There it goes, digging all the earth out of that trench.
00:14:05Here's the driver.
00:14:07He's in charge of the digger.
00:14:09Can you see what he's doing?
00:14:11He's using these special levers to tell the digger what to do.
00:14:14So the digger digs the trenches in exactly the right place.
00:14:21The trench is finished now, so this digger can drive off to another site to dig somewhere else.
00:14:32And here comes the concrete pourer, full of concrete.
00:14:36It backs up into the right place.
00:14:39And one of the builders fixes on a special pouring attachment.
00:14:46The builders are getting ready to pour the concrete.
00:14:50That's where the concrete's going to come out.
00:14:52It goes all the way along this special chute.
00:14:56And there it is, pouring out.
00:14:59This builder is making sure it goes in the right place.
00:15:02There it goes, into the chute again.
00:15:08And out into the trenches.
00:15:10And all around them.
00:15:13The builders move the special pouring attachment around,
00:15:17to make sure the concrete spreads out everywhere.
00:15:21Then it's time to flatten the concrete out, using this long piece of wood.
00:15:25Just look at all that concrete.
00:15:29There's lots of it.
00:15:32It's important that the concrete's really flat and level,
00:15:35so the builders use all sorts of tools to flatten it.
00:15:39Remember, when the concrete dries, it'll turn very hard,
00:15:42and it'll be too late to flatten it then.
00:15:44The builders have to make it as flat as they can,
00:15:47while it's still wet and easy to move about.
00:15:49It takes a long time to pour all that concrete out.
00:15:53This foundation is going to be very big.
00:15:56A whole house is going to be built on it.
00:16:01The concrete pouring truck's empty now.
00:16:04No more concrete.
00:16:05It's finished pouring for the day.
00:16:08The builders can put away its pouring attachment
00:16:10and give it a clean.
00:16:13And here comes the next concrete pouring truck,
00:16:16ready to pour the next part of the foundation.
00:16:19This concrete pouring truck is finished for today.
00:16:23It's done a lot of good work.
00:16:29And here's the foundation, all finished.
00:16:32The concrete's dried and it's really hard.
00:16:35It's ready for a house to be built on it.
00:16:38Hmm.
00:16:39I wonder what all that wood's going to be used for.
00:16:42We'll find out later.
00:16:43Those foundations looked really strong.
00:16:51That's stage one finished.
00:16:54Can you remember what stage two of building a house is?
00:16:56This is another film about some of the walls we've built.
00:17:05We've built some out of bricks like this one.
00:17:08But we've built this wall out of wood.
00:17:14We used great big logs and you stack them together to make a wall.
00:17:19These walls are made out of big metal panels.
00:17:21Some for the side walls and some for the front wall.
00:17:27And some for the upstairs.
00:17:31The panels fit together with these special clips.
00:17:34There's one part of a wall.
00:17:36And another one.
00:17:39And another one.
00:17:41And one more.
00:17:43Now here's a machine you need if you're building walls.
00:17:47He's very good at carrying things.
00:17:49He's big.
00:17:50And he's strong.
00:17:51And he's red.
00:17:53Right.
00:17:54It's Packer.
00:17:55Packer is my delivery truck.
00:17:57He's very useful if I'm building walls because he delivers all the important things I need.
00:18:02Like wood and concrete.
00:18:03Look at that big heavy load.
00:18:07I couldn't carry all of that by myself.
00:18:10I need a big strong machine to do it for me.
00:18:13But there's another machine who can be very useful for picking up and carrying smaller things.
00:18:18Do you know who it is?
00:18:20Right.
00:18:21It's Sumsy.
00:18:22She's my forklift truck.
00:18:24She can help load things up too.
00:18:26On Packer.
00:18:27You need a lot of things if you're building the walls of a house.
00:18:30You need a big strong delivery machine.
00:18:34Let's go back on site and see what's being delivered there.
00:18:38This looks like a big strong delivery truck just like Packer.
00:18:43And it's delivering wood.
00:18:45You need wood for building walls.
00:18:47And this truck's delivering lots of it.
00:18:50This builder is untying the wood from the trailer.
00:18:54It had to be tied up while the truck was driving along so it didn't fall off.
00:19:00Time to deliver the wood.
00:19:02There it goes.
00:19:04One pile of wood delivered.
00:19:06Once all the wood they need has been delivered, these builders lay it out in the right place.
00:19:14Now they're ready to turn it into walls.
00:19:19So, those are the kinds of machines we need.
00:19:23Now it's time to see the walls being built.
00:19:26Let's go back on site.
00:19:29Remember all that wood that was delivered?
00:19:41Well, then the builders lay it all on the ground.
00:19:44They cut the pieces of wood so they're the right length.
00:19:56Then hammer them together.
00:19:58This special tool pushes nails in really quickly.
00:20:08But the builders use ordinary hammers too.
00:20:11The last pieces of wood are all being nailed together now.
00:20:22Time to lift them up.
00:20:28There.
00:20:31That looks a bit more like a wall.
00:20:33It's the frame of a wall.
00:20:35A frame is the main shape of something.
00:20:37Remember, everything else gets built around it.
00:20:40This piece of wood is called a brace.
00:21:03It's being nailed across the frames to make them really strong.
00:21:07There are two more braces being cut to length.
00:21:10And this metal bolt will make this frame strong too.
00:21:21There we are.
00:21:22All the wall frames all finished.
00:21:25Now, what happens next?
00:21:27Can you remember?
00:21:29Right.
00:21:30Concrete.
00:21:31The walls are sprayed with concrete to make them really strong and thick.
00:21:36That's what the builders are doing here.
00:21:38They're spraying concrete on.
00:21:41Can you see?
00:21:44Once the concrete's on the walls, they smooth it out so it's really flat.
00:21:49The builders use a special machine to spray on the concrete really fast.
00:21:57That way, they can spray the whole wall really quickly.
00:22:00And then smooth it out.
00:22:08After the first layer of concrete's dried, the builders put another layer on top.
00:22:12This concrete's made with sand, and it's very smooth.
00:22:16It's called render.
00:22:18And when you put it on, that's called rendering.
00:22:21People want their houses to be strong, but they also like them to look nice.
00:22:27That's why the special smooth rendering is put on, so the walls of the house look really neat and tidy.
00:22:33The builders are putting render all over the house, even on the chimney top.
00:22:41Can you see?
00:22:44Some bricks have been delivered, too.
00:22:47There's a pile of them.
00:22:49When the rendering's finished, the builders use those bricks to make the columns look even nicer.
00:22:56And then they paint the columns, too.
00:23:03There, those columns really do look great.
00:23:18Bob, they said that building walls is a bit like building a nest.
00:23:21They put lots of little bits of wood together, like twigs.
00:23:26And to make the walls of a house, you put lots of big bits of wood together.
00:23:30It sounds like the birds understood everything, Roly.
00:23:34But why don't I go through it with them one more time?
00:23:38Let's hit it!
00:23:39How do you do it?
00:23:40How do you do it?
00:23:41How do you build a house?
00:23:43If you want to see, sing along with me.
00:23:45Cos this is how you build a house.
00:23:47First you dig on down where your house will stand.
00:23:50You're making foundations, so dig them in the ground.
00:23:52Then fill them up with lots of concrete, so your house will be strong like the others in the street.
00:23:57How do you do it?
00:23:58How do you do it?
00:23:58How do you build a house?
00:24:00If you want to see, sing along with me.
00:24:03Cos this is how you build a house.
00:24:05Next you build the walls, you make them out of wood.
00:24:07Nail the beams together, so it looks really good.
00:24:09Now you've got your frame, it's time to have fun.
00:24:12Spray it on concrete, then the job's done!
00:24:14That was great, Roly!
00:24:18Now, do you remember the next stage of building a house?
00:24:22Building the roof!
00:24:26Here's a little film of me building roofs with my team.
00:24:29I'm putting some tiles on that roof, and here's Lofty helping me with the roof of a log cabin.
00:24:36This is my friend Marjorie.
00:24:38She's helping me build a thatched roof.
00:24:40That's a roof made out of twigs and branches called thatch.
00:24:43You have to build it really carefully, so the twigs and branches will keep the rain out.
00:24:48This roof is made out of metal sheets.
00:24:52And this is a very special solar panel roof.
00:24:55It turns the sun into energy.
00:25:00And here's Lofty again, helping me build a roof out of tiles.
00:25:06He lifts them all the way up to me, so I can put them on the roof.
00:25:11Lofty's very good at lifting things.
00:25:13That's why he's very useful if I'm building a roof.
00:25:16Ah, now here I am, building a solar roof again.
00:25:20This special blue material is very clever.
00:25:23It turns sunlight into energy for the house.
00:25:27Here's Lofty again.
00:25:29He really is good at helping me build roofs.
00:25:32That's because roofs are built high up on top of a house.
00:25:36Whenever I build a roof, I make sure Lofty's with me.
00:25:39He's my brilliant roof-building crane.
00:25:41Let's go on-site and see some more cranes.
00:25:47Here we are back on-site.
00:25:49Look at this crane.
00:25:51It's got a big hook, hasn't it?
00:25:54And look how high it's lifting it.
00:25:56I wonder what it's going to pick up with that hook.
00:26:04First, the builders need to make sure the crane will stay steady.
00:26:08So they fit these special extra feet.
00:26:11Now it's time to see what this crane's lifting.
00:26:16Look, it's a big wooden frame.
00:26:18The crane driver's making sure it's lifted into the right place.
00:26:24It looks like part of a roof.
00:26:27Here's another crane.
00:26:29This one's part of a truck.
00:26:32There's a special moving belt that runs all the way up it.
00:26:36It carries all these tiles up to the roof.
00:26:41Here's another crane.
00:26:42It's on its way to a job.
00:26:44And there it is, lifting all those tiles up onto that roof.
00:26:57Now it's off to help on another job site.
00:27:04So, a crane is the machine we need.
00:27:07Now it's time to see a roof being built.
00:27:10Let's go back on-site.
00:27:14Here we are, on-site.
00:27:19This house is all ready to have its roof put on.
00:27:22And we know what kind of machine's going to come and help, don't we?
00:27:26Right, a crane.
00:27:31I wonder what job it's going to do first.
00:27:33It's lifting up this wooden frame.
00:27:45Look!
00:27:49There it goes, into the air.
00:27:51I wonder where it's going to go.
00:27:52Those two builders are waiting for it.
00:28:04Oh, it's going on top of the walls.
00:28:07It's part of the roof.
00:28:09The builders hammer it into place.
00:28:13They're using that special tool again to put nails in.
00:28:16This builder's measuring some pieces of wood to make sure they're the right size.
00:28:21Let's watch all the builders put the roof together.
00:28:43Now for the other parts of the roof.
00:28:46Let's watch the crane lift them into place.
00:28:48There we are.
00:29:11The frame of the roof is all done.
00:29:13The frame of something is its main shape, remember?
00:29:15Here's another roof.
00:29:17The builders have covered the frame with pieces of wood.
00:29:20Look.
00:29:22The pieces of wood are called panels.
00:29:24They're shiny on one side.
00:29:26That helps them keep the heat in the house when the roof's finished.
00:29:32The builders cut the panels so they fit the shapes of the roof.
00:29:36Everything has to fit together perfectly.
00:29:39And when the panels are in the right place, the builders nail them down so they don't blow away.
00:29:57Once the panels are nailed on, the builders cover them with special material called roofing felt.
00:30:02But it's very good at keeping the rain out, so the house underneath will stay nice and dry.
00:30:13But the builders have to be very careful that no rain at all gets through the roof.
00:30:17So after they've laid the felt down, they put on these special tiles, too.
00:30:22They cover the whole roof with them.
00:30:24It takes a long time.
00:30:26And when they've finished, there's still more to do.
00:30:29Because the last part of the roof is made out of these strong, heavy tiles.
00:30:33They'll keep the rain out for a very long time.
00:30:36The crane lifts them onto the roof.
00:30:38They cover the whole roof.
00:31:00There we are.
00:31:01A good strong roof.
00:31:02That'll keep the rain out.
00:31:04So, that's the roof done.
00:31:06I've got another little film here, though.
00:31:12Here's a film of some children who are going to build their own roof.
00:31:16What's this they're using?
00:31:18Can you tell?
00:31:21Oh, it's a big sheet.
00:31:24They're spreading it out on the ground.
00:31:27But you go under a roof.
00:31:30How can they lift it up?
00:31:36Clothes pegs?
00:31:37What are they for?
00:31:40I see.
00:31:42They're fixing the corners of the sheet onto things.
00:31:45So it's lifted off the ground.
00:31:47Now the children can go under it.
00:32:09And that makes it a roof.
00:32:11It's nice and cool inside, because the roof makes shade from the sun.
00:32:20But where's she going?
00:32:26Oh, it looks like it's time for everyone to play.
00:32:30All under one roof.
00:32:32Have fun, everybody.
00:32:44And now all three stages are finished.
00:32:47Just a few little extra bits and pieces to go.
00:32:50Let's go back on site.
00:32:52The builders are going to start working on the inside of the house now.
00:32:59One of the first things they do is run lots of wires through the wall frames.
00:33:03The wires are very important, because they'll carry electricity.
00:33:07And electricity will make the lights, the refrigerator, the television, and everything else in the house work.
00:33:13But wires can look untidy, so the builders put them inside the walls, where they can't be seen.
00:33:19What's this builder doing?
00:33:24He's cutting out a hole.
00:33:26I wonder what this is for.
00:33:28Do you know?
00:33:35Right!
00:33:36A window!
00:33:38And I wonder what this hole is for.
00:33:40Right, a door!
00:33:53The house is nearly finished now, but it needs painting.
00:34:02Some of the paint is sprayed on with a special machine.
00:34:08And some of it's painted on with a brush.
00:34:10Especially fiddly bits like that.
00:34:21They paint the outside, too, with rollers.
00:34:26There we are.
00:34:27Just a last bit of painting to do.
00:34:30Then it's all finished.
00:34:31We've seen one sort of house being built, Rowley, but it's not the only way to do it.
00:34:45There are lots of different kinds of houses, and lots of different ways to build them.
00:34:50Like Scarecrow Cottage.
00:34:52That was different, all right.
00:34:54Do you remember?
00:34:54I decided to build a house for Farmer Pickles out of straw.
00:35:00We built the foundations just the same as usual.
00:35:03I built the bottom part of the walls out of concrete and stone to make them really strong.
00:35:10But when that part was finished, I built the rest of the walls out of straw.
00:35:14Spud was very interested in the straw house, because he's a scarecrow.
00:35:20He's made out of straw, too.
00:35:34Once the straw walls were built, I put the roof on.
00:35:37And do you know what we cut out here?
00:35:40Can you guess?
00:35:41That's right!
00:35:42It's a door!
00:35:45Next, we had to make the building really strong, so we covered the straw with concrete.
00:35:51We put windows in.
00:35:54And finished the roof.
00:35:56And when everything was done, Farmer Pickles made something else out of straw.
00:36:00A little straw doll.
00:36:03So we called it Scarecrow Cottage.
00:36:06And that isn't the only different sort of house I've built.
00:36:10What about Mr. Bentley's office?
00:36:12I built that out of things you normally throw away.
00:36:15But I decided to turn them into a building instead.
00:36:18I used old tyres filled with earth to make the walls.
00:36:21And old tin cans, too.
00:36:23And all sorts of other things.
00:36:25I even used pieces of old bamboo to make the pipes and gutters.
00:36:38We covered the walls with special plaster called adobe.
00:36:44And when Mr. Bentley's office was finished, it was a very unusual building.
00:36:48Let's have a look at some other houses.
00:36:53There really are lots of different houses.
00:36:57These are all big family houses with lots of rooms, garages for cars and gardens to play in.
00:37:04This is a big family house, too.
00:37:09These houses are spread out around a big lake.
00:37:12And these houses are much smaller.
00:37:16They're in the middle of a city where everyone lives much closer together.
00:37:21And these houses are very different.
00:37:23They've got curved roofs.
00:37:25All over the world, people live in all sorts of different houses.
00:37:30In the middle of the city, people even live in skyscrapers.
00:37:34Really big, tall buildings.
00:37:37Rock and roll, Bob!
00:37:38There really are a lot of different kinds of houses, aren't there?
00:37:42Yes, Rolly.
00:37:43And here's one more.
00:37:48Here's a film about some children who've been building a house.
00:37:52But where is it?
00:37:54Oh, it's a really small house.
00:37:57I wonder who's going to live there.
00:38:02Hmm.
00:38:03Someone who drinks from this bowl.
00:38:05Of course, it's a dog.
00:38:09His name's Bugsy.
00:38:10And this is going to be his house.
00:38:13Wait a minute.
00:38:14Something's wrong.
00:38:15What's that?
00:38:17Bugsy wants his house to be a different colour.
00:38:19Oh, I see.
00:38:20He wants it to be the same colour as his collar.
00:38:23Red.
00:38:24The children are going to paint the doghouse so it's red, just like Bugsy's collar.
00:38:35They're moving the doghouse onto some paper so the floor doesn't get painted red as well.
00:38:47Here's the paint.
00:38:48They're wearing special painting clothes, so it doesn't matter if they get a little bit of paint on themselves.
00:38:59First, they're pouring the paint into these special painting trays.
00:39:03And now, they're using brushes to paint the doghouse.
00:39:11They're using big brushes to paint the big parts.
00:39:15And small brushes to paint the small parts.
00:39:18There, all done.
00:39:31I think Bugsy likes his red house, but he can't go inside just yet.
00:39:36The paint's still wet.
00:39:38Bugsy needs to wait until it's dry.
00:39:41It takes a little while.
00:39:43But now it's dry.
00:39:45It's ready for Bugsy to go inside.
00:39:47Welcome to your new home, Bugsy.
00:39:56Well, Roly, we know all about building a house now.
00:40:01But I think the little birds could do with another reminder.
00:40:05Yeah!
00:40:06Ready, birds?
00:40:07How do you do it?
00:40:09How do you do it?
00:40:10How do you build a house?
00:40:11If you want to sing, sing along with me.
00:40:14Because this is how you build a house.
00:40:16For a good, strong roof between walls and sky, you put it on the top and then you stay dry.
00:40:20You top it off with tiles, you lay them in a row, and your house is finished.
00:40:24And in you go.
00:40:25How do you do it?
00:40:26How do you do it?
00:40:27How do you build a house?
00:40:29If you want to sing, sing along with me.
00:40:31Because this is how you build a house.
00:40:33There are lots of kinds.
00:40:34Much more than one sort.
00:40:36Houses are built from more things than you thought.
00:40:38Some are built of tyres, some are built of straw.
00:40:40But build them out of anything, just don't forget the door!
00:40:44Hang on, Bob.
00:40:46This isn't a house.
00:40:47It's a playground.
00:40:51Birds asking if people live in playgrounds, Bob.
00:40:54No, Roly.
00:40:55But wherever you live, it's nice to have fun things to do nearby at a place like a playground.
00:41:02The birds want to know how you build playgrounds, Bob.
00:41:06I'll show you.
00:41:08My dad built the playground here by this tree for Sonny and Saffron and all the other children
00:41:15who live in Sunflower Valley.
00:41:18It was just like the one I used to play on when I was a little boy.
00:41:24First of all, dad built a seesaw.
00:41:27He built it out of pieces of wood, carefully put together.
00:41:30Sonny and Saffron loved it.
00:41:32Once my dad had tested it out anyway.
00:41:34Ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:41:38Some squirrels had fun on a seesaw, too.
00:41:45Then dad built a climbing frame.
00:41:51He built that from wood, too.
00:41:53There were ladders, like this one, and some rope netting, too.
00:42:00He built it right around the tree, and when it was finished, he helped Sonny and Saffron test it out, too.
00:42:07There was even a little bridge to walk over.
00:42:11Look!
00:42:12Last of all, dad used an old rubble chute of mine to build a slide.
00:42:17A rubble chute is something you use to throw away bricks and concrete when you're demolishing a building.
00:42:24But you can turn it into a slide, too.
00:42:26But you can turn it into a slide, too.
00:42:28A really good one.
00:42:30So good that my dad tested that out, too.
00:42:36There are lots of different kinds of playground rollie, but they're all built in roughly the same way.
00:42:43Let's have a look.
00:42:45There were three stages to building a house, and there are three stages to building a playground, too.
00:42:53Stage one, equipment.
00:42:55Stage two, surface.
00:43:00Stage three, fence.
00:43:04Can we build it?
00:43:08Yes, we can!
00:43:10Vroom!
00:43:11Oh, hello, little truck.
00:43:13Have you come to help again?
00:43:14Vroom!
00:43:15Great!
00:43:16Now, let me think of something you can do.
00:43:19Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom!
00:43:21I don't need to.
00:43:22Vroom, vroom, vroom!
00:43:23What's he up to?
00:43:25Hmm.
00:43:26I'm sure we'll find out soon.
00:43:28Now it's time for stage one.
00:43:31Equipment.
00:43:32That's what we call the slide, the swings, and everything else you play on at the playground.
00:43:38The slides and swings have to be fixed to the ground, so they don't wobble about when
00:43:43we use them.
00:43:44They'll stand in these little holes, like this.
00:43:47But we need something extra, something strong and hard to hold them there.
00:43:53Concrete!
00:43:54Once the concrete dries hard, it'll hold the slide and swings in place.
00:44:00And stage one is finished.
00:44:02The equipment.
00:44:03It's time for stage two.
00:44:06Surface.
00:44:07The surface is what we call the ground in a playground.
00:44:12This surface is made out of wood chips.
00:44:15Small, squishy pieces of wood.
00:44:17If you fall on them, you'll have a soft landing.
00:44:20Now it's time for stage three.
00:44:21The fence.
00:44:22We put a fence around the playground so that everybody inside feels safe.
00:44:31And there it is.
00:44:32All done.
00:44:33Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom.
00:44:34Oh, hello little truck.
00:44:37I'm afraid you're a bit late to help.
00:44:39The playground's all finished.
00:44:41We've done all three stages.
00:44:43Equipment.
00:44:44Surface.
00:44:45Fence.
00:44:46Vroom, vroom.
00:44:47Vroom, vroom.
00:44:48There's something else?
00:44:49Vroom.
00:44:50I don't think so, little truck.
00:44:51Vroom, vroom, vroom.
00:44:52Vroom, vroom, vroom.
00:44:53What's going on?
00:44:56Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom.
00:44:58Oh, I see.
00:45:00The children who are going to play in the playground.
00:45:03Of course.
00:45:04Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom.
00:45:06And you brought them here.
00:45:07Vroom, vroom.
00:45:08You really did help, little truck.
00:45:11Well done.
00:45:13So, stage one, equipment.
00:45:16What machines do you think we'll need?
00:45:19Let's have another look at some of my machine team.
00:45:22We need a machine to deliver all the equipment, don't we?
00:45:27Who's this?
00:45:29Right, it's Packer.
00:45:31He's very good at picking up and delivering lots of heavy bits and pieces.
00:45:35He picks up important things from all over Sunflower Valley
00:45:38and takes them wherever they need to go.
00:45:41And when he's there, he picks up other important things
00:45:44and brings them back to the valley.
00:45:47He's perfect for delivering playground equipment.
00:45:50You need a digger too, if you're building a playground,
00:45:54to dig the holes for the slides and swings to stand it.
00:45:57Diggers like Scoop and Mock.
00:46:00Scoop and Mock are two of the best diggers there are.
00:46:03They'd be really useful when you're building a playground.
00:46:06They're good at digging all kinds of things.
00:46:14And it can be useful to have a cement mixer helping too.
00:46:17If you're building a playground, like Dizzy.
00:46:20She can mix up concrete for putting in the holes to hold the equipment in place really firmly.
00:46:27Dizzy really is a very good cement mixer.
00:46:30Look at the mixing and pouring she's done for me.
00:46:33And Dizzy knows a lot about concrete too.
00:46:36She knows you have to be careful not to touch it before it's dry.
00:46:40That's why she's crossing over it with this little bridge.
00:46:44Well done Dizzy.
00:46:45Now, let's go back on site.
00:46:48Here's a playground all finished.
00:46:51Look at all the equipment.
00:46:53And look at the soft surface on the ground.
00:46:59And look at the fence all around it too.
00:47:02So it's really safe.
00:47:08Let's find out how all the equipment is made.
00:47:12Here it is in pieces at the factory.
00:47:14Those green and yellow pieces at the end are slides.
00:47:18And here's a builder making the equipment.
00:47:21He's sawing the wood up into the right shape.
00:47:24He's drilling holes in it too.
00:47:26So it can be bolted together.
00:47:30Everything has to be just the right shape.
00:47:32So it fits together the right way.
00:47:37This part of the equipment has to be curved.
00:47:39So the builder's making it that shape with a special machine.
00:47:47And when all the bits of equipment are made,
00:47:49they have to be varnished.
00:47:51Varnish is a special paint which makes wood waterproof.
00:47:54When the wood's covered with it,
00:47:56it'll be protected from the rain and the weather.
00:48:02The varnish is dry now.
00:48:04Everything's ready.
00:48:06The builders are packing everything onto the back of a delivery truck.
00:48:10It's just like Packer.
00:48:12All packed up and ready to go.
00:48:21All the pieces of equipment are arriving at the place where the playground's going to be built.
00:48:25That yellow piece is the slide.
00:48:36The builders are putting up the first pieces of equipment now.
00:48:40Everything has to be bolted and screwed together really tightly.
00:48:44Lots of children are going to play on this equipment, so it has to be really strong.
00:48:47It's really strong.
00:49:17They're wondering if there are playgrounds for birds.
00:49:31I've never heard of one, Rolly, but there might be.
00:49:34Now, it's time for stage two.
00:49:37Can you remember what it is?
00:49:39Here's a clue.
00:49:41It's something special that goes on the ground to stop anyone hurting themselves if they fall.
00:49:47And it comes in these special bags.
00:49:49They're being delivered by another delivery truck.
00:49:52These builders are carrying them out to the playground.
00:49:55Do you know what's in the bags?
00:49:58It's lots of little pieces of wood called wood chips.
00:50:02Wood chips are soft.
00:50:04That's why the builders are putting them down around the playground equipment,
00:50:07so they make a soft surface.
00:50:09That's stage two of making a playground, putting down a soft surface.
00:50:14The builders need lots and lots of bags of wood chips.
00:50:18They've got to make sure everywhere around the playground equipment is covered,
00:50:22so the ground will be soft and the playground will be safe to use.
00:50:26Each bag is full of lots of wood chips.
00:50:29The builders make sure they're spread everywhere, really deep.
00:50:32If you accidentally fell into them, it would be like falling into a soft bed.
00:50:40You wouldn't hurt yourself.
00:50:45That's it. Make sure they go everywhere. There's plenty more.
00:50:49Stage two is nearly finished now.
00:50:51The builders just have to spread out the rest of those wood chips.
00:50:54They're using those big pegs to secure the frame that holds the wood chips in place.
00:51:00They need to make sure those pegs are hammered in good and strong.
00:51:07There we are. Just a few more wood chips to spread out so that everywhere's covered in a soft surface.
00:51:18This builder's using the special rake to do it.
00:51:21And the other builder's helping him with a spade.
00:51:24He's making sure the wood chips go absolutely everywhere.
00:51:28He wants to make sure this playground's really safe.
00:51:30The bags are all empty now. The wood chips have all been emptied out and spread around.
00:51:38And the soft surface is down.
00:51:40So whoever uses the playground now will be really safe.
00:51:45What did you think of that, birdies?
00:51:48Birdies?
00:51:50They've gone.
00:51:51Birdies?
00:51:52Birdies?
00:51:53Oh, it's alright, Bob.
00:51:54I can hear them.
00:51:55They're over there.
00:51:56Good.
00:51:58Because there's still one more stage to look at.
00:52:01Stage three.
00:52:03It happens after the equipment's put together and the soft surface has been put down.
00:52:08This builder's looking at his plans to find out what the last stage is.
00:52:12Here's a drawing of the playground he's building.
00:52:15The last stage that happened was putting up the fence.
00:52:18The builders put the fence around the playground to keep it really safe.
00:52:25The builders are finishing off a few other things too.
00:52:28They're bolting the slide on and it's a special curved slide, look!
00:52:33This equipment is made out of metal, not wood.
00:52:36The builders are going to use concrete to hold the equipment in the ground really firmly.
00:52:42Here's the concrete being mixed.
00:52:45It goes into the hole and when it dries it goes hard.
00:52:49It will hold the equipment in the ground very firmly.
00:52:52And here's the last stage of the playground, the fence.
00:52:56The builders are putting it up bit by bit.
00:53:03The builders have finished now.
00:53:05They've used this digger to build the playground and they're taking it home.
00:53:09Let's watch them build it one more time.
00:53:15Let's have a look at another film.
00:53:28Here's a film of another playground.
00:53:34And here come some children to test it out.
00:53:36See these faces with a little smile?
00:53:39They mean something's quite good fun.
00:53:41But look at these faces.
00:53:43They've got a much bigger smile.
00:53:45That means something's really good fun.
00:53:53First test, the swings.
00:53:55They're quite good fun.
00:54:02But what's this?
00:54:08She's going higher and higher.
00:54:11And the higher she goes, the more fun it is.
00:54:25Those swings were really good fun.
00:54:30Next test, the seesaw.
00:54:32Not much fun yet.
00:54:37That's because you need two people to have fun on a seesaw.
00:54:42Like this.
00:54:45Now she's showing the face with the big smile.
00:54:49Lots of fun this end.
00:54:51And lots of fun this end too.
00:54:53Last test, the slide.
00:55:10Oh, that looks like fun.
00:55:14And so does that.
00:55:16Hang on.
00:55:17Everyone's having a go now.
00:55:18And when everyone has fun together, it's the best fun ever.
00:55:30Here are the birds, Bob.
00:55:33What are you doing, birdies?
00:55:36Playing in your playground?
00:55:39Bouncing up and down on those branches does look like good fun.
00:55:43It's a bouncing birdie playground tree.
00:55:45Yes.
00:55:46There are lots of different kinds of playgrounds, Roley.
00:55:56Once, I built a skate park in Boblin Bay.
00:55:59Here are the plans for it.
00:56:00A skate park is a place where people can play with their skateboards and rollerblades.
00:56:05It's got lots of exciting hills and dips for them to roll up and down.
00:56:09I needed a lot of concrete to build it.
00:56:11And that's why I asked Tumbler to join our team.
00:56:14Because he's really good at pouring concrete.
00:56:22First of all, we had to measure out the site with these ropes and pegs.
00:56:27Then Scoop and Muck had to do lots of digging.
00:56:31They dug out lots of holes and used the earth to make hills.
00:56:34Roley came along and did some flattening too.
00:56:38And after that, Wendy and I built big strong frames out of wood.
00:56:44Lofty lifted them into place.
00:56:46And we covered them with cloth and wire ready for the next stage.
00:56:49You could really see the shape of all the slopes and dips now.
00:56:54Everyone was getting very excited, especially the skaters.
00:56:58But the park wasn't quite ready.
00:57:00We needed to make it really hard and smooth for the wheels and the skateboards.
00:57:04What do you think we used for that?
00:57:06Concrete!
00:57:07Tumbler poured it everywhere and Dizzy helped him.
00:57:11They sprayed concrete all over the slopes and dips.
00:57:15When the concrete was dry, I painted the skate park and it was ready to use.
00:57:20And Dizzy had the first go.
00:57:22She was brilliant!
00:57:24Let's have a look at another film. A film of another playground.
00:57:39Here are some children using another skate park.
00:57:42There are lots of tricks you can do on a skateboard. Just look.
00:57:45You can skate up ramps and back down again.
00:57:49You can skate along rails.
00:57:51In fact, you can do whatever you want. Skate parks really are lots of fun.
00:57:59That was amazing, Bob!
00:58:05Bob?
00:58:07I don't know where he is, Birdies.
00:58:10First you disappeared, now Bob's gone too.
00:58:14What's that?
00:58:16Another song to remind us of everything while we wait for Bob to get back.
00:58:21How do you do it? How do you do it? How is a playground built?
00:58:25If you want to see, have a look with me.
00:58:28Cause here's how a playground's built.
00:58:30First, things to play on. Roundabouts and slide.
00:58:32A set of swings too and some other great rides.
00:58:35Layers surface, make it nice and soft, so no one gets hurt if they slip and fall off.
00:58:39How do you do it? How do you do it? How is a playground built?
00:58:42How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you do it
00:59:12No prob, Bob.
00:59:13Right, Bob.
00:59:14That's amazing, birdies.
00:59:17You found out about houses and playgrounds today.
00:59:21And now you've got your own special birdie house and birdie playground too.
00:59:28Rock and roll!
00:59:31Bye, everyone. Bye-bye.
00:59:42Bye-bye.
