Displaced Palestinians head back to shattered homes as Gaza ceasefire holds
Transcript
00:00Following the ceasefire, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians began their journey
00:12back from southern Gaza to the north, exhausted and carrying what little they owned.
00:19Many walked for hours along the coastal road to reach their homes in Gaza city.
00:25Among them was Naeem Raheem, who dismantled his tent and prepared to return to Talal Hawa.
00:35As you can see, we're taking down our tent and heading back to Talal Hawa.
00:40Our house is gone, completely destroyed.
00:43We're going back to live in tents again.
00:46We move from one tragedy to another.
00:49Despite the devastation, thousands of residents returned within hours of the ceasefire, hoping
00:56to see what's left of their homes, even though they knew most had been destroyed.
01:04After the guns fell silent, a resident returned to northern Gaza.
01:09The staggering scale of destruction began to emerge.
01:13Here in Sheikh Radwan, the neighborhood that includes my own home, a new and difficult battle
01:20begins for Palestinians to find shelter and rebuild their lives amid the devastation.
01:28The entire areas, including Sabra, Talal Hawa and Sheikh Radwan, have been flattened, leaving
01:36no signs of life amid their winds.
01:41We came back to Gaza and found no neighborhoods, no homes.
01:45They wiped our house completely.
01:46It used to shelter more than 20 people.
01:49Now we just have to wait for reconstruction to begin, hoping for even a small chance to
01:53live again.
01:54With winter approaching, thousands face homelessness.
01:59Children wander through rubble as parents search for anything to salvage, while others try
02:06to shelter their families inside partially damaged homes.
