00:00This is Outperformed Yesterday, presented by Kayaks.
00:04A lot of storylines coming out of the 2025 U.S. Open.
00:08Brendan London here alongside of New York Post sports reporter, writer, the man does it all, Peter Boddy.
00:15Peter, first and foremost, man, thanks for coming and talking with us, hanging out with us.
00:19Again, I talked about the storylines.
00:21You've got things to write, articles to write.
00:24Your biggest storyline coming out of the U.S. Open so far.
00:28Well, I think today, the interesting thing that just happened a few minutes ago,
00:32Naomi Osaka, after her victory over Haley Baptiste earlier today,
00:38came to the defense of Taylor Townsend, who yesterday obviously got into it with Helena Ostapenko.
00:46She claimed that Ostapenko said to her that she had no class and was uneducated for kind of a breach of etiquette.
00:53And Osaka came to her defense today, and I thought it was very interesting.
01:00She said, like, you know, that's the worst thing you could say to a black player, to use those sort of insults.
01:08And she said, you know, I've known Taylor for a long time, and she's anything but uneducated.
01:15And, you know, I thought that was really interesting that, you know, Naomi really kind of went out of her way to defend a fellow player.
01:23When we talk about Ostapenko, because, you know, she came out with the IG story and kind of said that I respect all nations, she's not racist.
01:31Is there a protocol in question, or do you think she was just kind of being a sore loser when it came to that?
01:41Well, I think there's some protocol there, and there's, like, unwritten rules like we see in baseball and other sports, right?
01:46There's always some unwritten rules that you're not supposed to break.
01:49But I understand, like, even Osaka was asked about that, too, and she said, look, those kind of things don't bother me.
01:56Maybe if it bothers her, that's, you know, that's up to her.
01:58And who knows, in the heat of battle, you lose a tough match.
02:01Maybe you're going to, you know, take to heart something like that.
02:06But I think that's, you know, kind of the lesser of these things.
02:10I mean, you know, we have all these unwritten rules and whatever, and, you know, you see it in other sports where people get offended by certain things.
02:19You know, and Townsend said, you're going to have to learn how to handle losing better.
02:23And I thought that was kind of an interesting comeback from her.
02:25Great comeback, great clapback, as the kids call it.
02:28And it's kind of unfortunate that this is what we're talking about when it comes to the 2025 U.S. Open.
02:34We've seen great matches.
02:35We've seen world number one, Yannick Sinner, just cruise through the second round.
02:39Same thing with Iga Sviatek.
02:41But going forward, what storylines or which players or upcoming matches do you have your eyes on,
02:51and you think that our audience should keep an eye on as well?
02:54Yeah, I mean, I think Sinner looked great today.
02:56Straight sets win, kind of cruised.
02:58And that's really been the case through both draws is that the top seeds have kind of, you know,
03:05just kind of managed their way through the draw pretty easily.
03:09So, yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, Djokovic is still around,
03:13so everybody wants to see, you know, him in a match like that.
03:17You know, I feel like this is Sinner's tournament to lose as the defending champ, right?
03:22So, I mean, I feel like he's the guy on the men's side.
03:25I actually thought Sviatek had some trouble today.
03:28She had to go to three sets, you know, with her first round opponent, second round opponent, excuse me.
03:34And, you know, I think it's going to be a fun, I think it's going to be a really fun second week
03:40because a lot of big names are left.
03:43Final thought, Peter, finish this off for our viewers watching out.
03:48Well, I mean, you know, this is one of my favorite events of the year every year.
03:51I mean, I cover all the different sports, and I always love to come here.
03:54I mean, you see the atmosphere here is always great.
03:57So, you know, to me, I look forward to this every year.
04:02And I think it's a nice change of pace for some of us who cover other sports to be out here.
04:06You know, Larry Brooks and Molly Walker and, you know, Brian Lewis, we're all kind of out here covering,
04:11and it's a lot of fun to do.
04:12Yeah, I'm having a great time.
04:14Unfortunately, I have to go talk about Michael Parsons getting traded to the Packers.
04:18But we are out of the Giants division.
04:20Out of the Giants division.
04:21I don't know what that means in terms of tennis world news, but it's a big deal right now.
04:27Peter, thanks for taking the time out of writing your article and stuff.
04:30Make sure you guys go check out the Post's website for Peter's upcoming articles,
04:35not only now but just throughout the rest of the U.S. Open.
