00:00This is Outperform Yesterday, presented by Kayaks.
00:05Tri-State athletes, are you guys ready for Northwell Ironman 70.3 New York at Jones Beach?
00:11Some of the most badass triathletes are geared up to compete in a 1.2 mile swim, a 56.1 mile bike course,
00:19and of course a 13.3 mile run to finish it up.
00:22So let's hear from the event operator, Corey Roberts, on what you guys can expect this year from Jones Beach.
00:28Corey, man, what's going on? Thanks for hopping on with us.
00:32Thanks for having me, man.
00:33I will say one thing, what they're going to expect is actually a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run.
00:40All right, well, thank you.
00:42Full of 70.3 miles.
00:43All right, add it on. Make sure you guys get that in your training, your last-minute preparation.
00:49But, Corey, you've been involved with this event for a while now.
00:52What's the one thing that you feel as though you're most excited for this year,
00:56and who are some of the athletes that you think we should keep an eye out for?
01:00So I'm actually most excited for we have a new footprint at the race with a brand-new finish line area
01:07that's going to make it just so much more enjoyable for our athletes and our spectators.
01:12So I'm really super excited to see that come together here at Jones Beach.
01:17And probably my favorite athletes, actually, to be looking out for this time
01:22would actually be our Challenged Athletes Foundation athletes that are racing with us this weekend.
01:29So we have a group of challenged athletes that will be out there.
01:33And just can't wait to celebrate them coming across the finish line, plus all our other athletes.
01:37Absolutely, man. That's great for the athletes.
01:40And especially when you talked about the finish line, that's probably the best part of the race.
01:44So what would you say is the most grueling part of the course?
01:47Like, what's that part where the athletes really have to dig deep to push through,
01:52or some end up tapping out, maybe?
01:54Well, probably the last few years, the hardest part of our course has been our swim.
01:59We've faced some strong wins the last couple of years.
02:02So that's been a hard point.
02:05But really, this event is so unique in the fact that it's so flat and so open.
02:15Probably the one thing that's going to make this course really hard is people will probably
02:20go too hard on the bike course, which might burn their legs for the run.
02:26So what would be, I guess, the proper strategy for the athletes during that bike course?
02:32Oh, I put a sign out on the road for the athletes that says,
02:37flat out like a lizard drinking, which means just go as fast as possible.
02:42So I want to see people set their own, I say their own world records, but their personal best.
02:49I want to see them set their fastest times at this course.
02:54So we're talking about races and events like this.
03:00A lot of people who I've talked to that compete in these things are kind of more advanced,
03:06but there are a lot of people kind of signing up for the first time.
03:09This is a big deal for a first-timer.
03:12So what advice would you have for those people kind of stepping into their first race like this?
03:17So I'm a really big believer in positive energy, right?
03:22So happy people make happy things happen.
03:25So really for all athletes, but especially first-time athletes, come down here, enjoy the moment,
03:32stay positive, and you'll have a sensational day with us.
03:37Corey, you've competed in these events before, and you've also been a professional chef as well.
03:44So two-part question, how did you get involved with this event,
03:49and what was it like for you when you were competing?
03:52Well, I did my first Ironman, full Ironman, back in 1996 in Australia.
03:59So I've been into triathlon since 1998, and I really kind of stumbled into working events
04:07by starting off volunteering them, and then my role just grew over time.
04:13Eventually, I created my own event company with my wife out here on Long Island called Race Awesome.
04:21And then basically the first year I created Race Awesome with my wife, I said,
04:26you know, we need to have a half Ironman at Jones Beach.
04:31And so we spent eight years working on it and trying to convince the powers that be,
04:37both at Ironman and New York State Parks, that Jones Beach, in my mind, was made for triathlon.
04:45It's an unbelievable location.
04:48And thankfully, you know, both Ironman and New York State Parks believed in me,
04:54and we got it done, and here we are.
04:56So that's how it was created.
04:58A lot of hard work and, you know, a lot of planning and organization to make it a reality.
05:03I saw, speaking of reality, I saw that you are on the reality show as well as a professional chef.
05:10So how does that kind of help you, not only as event operator,
05:14but with working with and communicating with the athletes?
05:18So I have been involved in, like, television and, I guess, cooking.
05:26For me, when I think about cooking and athletes, it's like, it's what makes people happy.
05:32Like, food makes people happy.
05:34So it's kind of come over into triathlon for me and producing events.
05:39Like, making athletes happy, making spectators happy.
05:43Like, that's my job, right?
05:45And I was on Bravo Network a while ago competing when I was still cooking.
05:52And so, and I won that show, so it was pretty good.
05:56All right, favorite game day meal then?
06:01Game day meal?
06:03Game day.
06:03I'm sorry, that's the football player of me.
06:06We got game day, so I guess, you know.
06:08Oh, my God, oatmeal.
06:10Oh, okay.
06:10There we go.
06:11It's a great way to start your morning.
06:14Really good rolled oats and fresh fruit, maybe some caramelized bananas.
06:20Great way to start your day.
06:22All right, make sure the athletes get that proper nutrition and that fuel because they
06:27are going to have themselves of a grueling race at Northwell Ironman 70.3 New York at
06:33Jones Beach.
06:34Corey, we thank you for hopping on with us today.
06:37No worries.
06:37Appreciate it, guys.
06:38Have a good weekend.
06:39Have a good weekend.
