00:00Tough times for gangrene across the pond on Sunday.
00:03The Jets, they failed to score a touchdown in London.
00:06They fell to the Broncos 13-11.
00:08So let's break it down with a host for ESPN New York Radio.
00:11It's my guy Ty Butler joining me now.
00:14Ty, I would ask you how you're doing, but you root for the Jets,
00:17so that means you can't be doing good, right?
00:20Listen, I actually woke up feeling pretty optimistic today
00:23because I heard the head coach of the Jets, Aaron Glenn,
00:26talk about they had a great week of practice,
00:27even though I said that last week and it got bludgeoned by the Cowboys.
00:33But also, you know what's sometimes the best cure for a team that's struggling?
00:38And you've been covering sports for a long time.
00:41The players-only meeting.
00:42So they check that box as well.
00:44Man, so because of the players-only meeting and the great week of practice,
00:48I'm like, man, sign the Jets up for the Super Bowl.
00:53Could this be the start of a ride?
00:56I'm just shaking my head at you.
00:59Listen, listen, listen.
01:01When you are this deep into the season, you're winless, coming into the game,
01:08you have zero takeaways, your defense is the second worst in football,
01:12your quarterback looks like he's never played the sport before.
01:16It gets to a point where you start to disengage just emotionally.
01:21I'm going to watch every play.
01:22I'm going to watch every single game.
01:23But emotionally, you're disengaged.
01:25So I am not angry right now.
01:29You know, I'm upset.
01:30I'm disappointed, especially because, and us as fans feel this way,
01:34when the entire world is watching you embarrass yourself,
01:37it makes you feel like the next time you go outside,
01:40you've got to put a paper bag over your face.
01:41It sounded like Kurt Warner listening to that game was offended by Justin Fields,
01:47offended by the Jets because they ruined his trip to London.
01:50He's like, yo, man, I wanted to come out here to have a good time.
01:54Had to call a Jet game.
01:56And that football game, because the Broncos are responsible for this too,
02:00set our country back 60 years.
02:03That's how awful that product was.
02:05I mean, it's embarrassing to wake up, you know,
02:08get yourself all ready to go and have your, like, timeline sped up
02:12because you've got a 9.30 game.
02:13So you're getting things.
02:14I've got kids.
02:15You know, everything's in rush mode.
02:17So watch that just now?
02:20Oh, it felt like just, you know, an embarrassing display.
02:24Roger Goodell is just like, bro, we've got all these deals lined up.
02:30We want to play international games, but that was just a pathetic showing
02:33for both the football teams.
02:34The Broncos were able to get the win.
02:36That was not a good showing there.
02:37Very rough.
02:38If you like offense, there wasn't much offense.
02:40One touchdown in this game, none from the Jets.
02:42We'll get into all that.
02:43But, Ty, to say that this was a rough game for the Jets' offense,
02:48that's being kind here, right?
02:50And that includes Justin Fields.
02:52And the Jets started in QB.
02:53He went 9 of 17.
02:54He passed for 45 yards.
02:57The Jets recorded 82 total yards in this game.
03:00Now, yourself, Gang Green fans, they've seen some terrible quarterbacking
03:05over the years.
03:06Where does Justin Fields' performance today in London rank for you
03:11in terms of worst Jets quarterbacking performances of all time?
03:15Like, because I feel like this has to be up there in some regard.
03:19But where does this rank for you, and how bad was it?
03:22Oh, it's as bad of a performance that I've ever seen all my years
03:26watching the Jets because it just felt like, at times,
03:31especially as you're gearing up for a two-minute drill toward the end
03:35of the first half, where it necessitated having him throw the football.
03:40And all you had to know, forget what we're saying as media, the fans,
03:46forget what they're saying.
03:47All you got to know about how bad Justin Fields was today,
03:52watch the plays that were being called.
03:55Watch his head coach have zero confidence in him putting together drives,
03:59which includes that final sequence of the game.
04:03The Jets found themselves about 7 to 10 yards shy of field goal range
04:08for Nick Falk, and they're running the ball.
04:11They're running the ball.
04:13They try to call pass plays.
04:14He gets sacked.
04:15So it is, without question, one of the worst games I've ever seen
04:20from a Jets quarterback.
04:21It's a poorly coached team offensively.
04:25They have no identity.
04:27And I understand, man, the Broncos, that is a tenacious defense.
04:32That is also an opportunistic defense.
04:35So you don't want to, especially when your defense is playing well,
04:38you don't want to have your offense get exposed to situations
04:42where they could turn the ball over.
04:44So the conservative approach, to a certain extent, you can understand.
04:48But he was awful today.
04:50And let's not take this regime off the hook because we're going to talk about,
04:54well, he's been on three teams in three different years.
04:56This regime, Darren Moji and Aaron Glenn decided they were going to give him
05:01$30 million guaranteed, a two-year, $40 million contract,
05:04because they thought that they could win football games with him.
05:08And we don't have to talk about their decision to get rid of Aaron Rodgers,
05:10who, oh, by the way, is winning with the Steelers.
05:12But they thought that he gave them a better chance to win games than Aaron Rodgers did.
05:17And watch the game for yourself today.
05:19Did it look like that?
05:20Absolutely not.
05:22It absolutely did not look like that at all whatsoever for Justin Fields and the Jets' offense.
05:27Now, the defense tie, they were good in this game.
05:30They held the Broncos 13 points.
05:32They held them to one touchdown.
05:33Considering how strong the Jets' defense was in London,
05:36should Aaron Glenn have gone to Rod Taylor to give his team a chance to win this game
05:41when Justin Fields looked as bad as he did?
05:44Listen, I want to give my man Alex B. Central a shout-out
05:46because he hit me with that question during the game on X.
05:51And I said, no, it didn't make any sense.
05:55But upon further review, like you throw a challenge flag and, you know,
05:58you send it up to the booth.
05:59Upon further review of my brain, I would say, yeah, man.
06:04Like, it gets to a point where you're just desperately trying to win.
06:08It's not about feelings.
06:10It's not about, you know, what it's going to do for the quarterback long term.
06:14It's about, yo, I'm 0-5.
06:17We are on the cusp of being at a trade deadline where we're sellers
06:22because our team is so bad.
06:24So we just desperately need a win in the worst way possible.
06:28So, you know, to quote Malcolm X, by any means necessary.
06:33So if that means going to a backup quarterback who I think is a better passer,
06:38then sure, it's not going to be long-lasting because Tyrod ultimately ends up getting hurt.
06:46And, you know, Justin Fields, as I mentioned, he's a guy that you financially invested in.
06:50But you owe it to your team at that point when you see the defense balling.
06:56Bo Nix didn't have a single passing yard until about 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter in the second half.
07:03So second half passing yards.
07:05Bo Nix was stuck on zero until about 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
07:09The defense is balling.
07:11Special teams have played well.
07:13So at that point, if you're Aaron Glenn, you owe it to your team to give them some kind of spark.
07:20And he was reluctant to do that.
07:22And ultimately, that loses them the game because you mentioned it.
07:27Yes, the scoreboard says 11 points.
07:30Two of them came via safety.
07:32Your offense in a 60-minute game put up nine points.
07:37Nine.
07:38Nine points.
07:39Unbelievable.
07:40No touchdowns for the Jets.
07:41It was a putrid offensive performance for them.
07:44And then I want to ask you about this other coaching decision because you kind of alluded to some of this coming late in the fourth quarter
07:49because the Jets, they went for it.
07:50They were about five yards from field goal range on fourth down late in the fourth quarter.
07:55They opted to pass instead of run when the pass hadn't been working all day.
08:00I just talked about Justin Fields only threw for 45 yards, and then he ends up getting sacked.
08:04Was passing the ball the right choice there, or should they have brought out Nick Folk for a 62-yard field goal
08:10and say at least he gives us a chance to get some more points on the board and win this game?
08:14What did you think about Aaron Glenn's decision there?
08:17So I don't disagree with the decision to go for it on fourth.
08:23It's a tough spot, and regardless of what happens, this is similar to the baseball conversation
08:28where it's like do you leave your starter in or you go to the bullpen?
08:31And if whatever decision you make ends up working against you, you know, ends up not working out,
08:40you're going to be killed for it.
08:41I don't think that we should treat, you know, a 60-plus – and I understand the NFL is different
08:47and how guys are hitting them with regularity.
08:49I don't think we should treat a 62-yard field goal as just some walk in the park.
08:54So I did not disagree with the decision on fourth and eight to go for it because there's some upside there.
09:02The Jets had Garrett Wilson on a previous play, and Fields hit him.
09:08It was knocked out of his hands.
09:09I actually think he made the pass.
09:11I'm surprised it wasn't reviewed.
09:12So I did not disagree with that decision.
09:15What I disagree with is the lack of consistency.
09:18All game long, you're running the football, which was to my chagrin, which was to a lot of Jet fans' chagrin.
09:25You're running the football, running the football, running the football.
09:28You get to within 10 yards of field goal range.
09:32Why are you now deciding, okay, we're going to throw against that defense?
09:38And the Jet pass rush or the Jet offensive line against the pass rush showed you they were incapable of stopping the Broncos' defensive line,
09:48especially when the Broncos brought that pressure.
09:50So I just thought the lack of consistency in that last sequence bothered me more than any of the decision-making when it came to the fourth and eight
10:01because all you got to do is pick up 10 yards, you're in field goal range, and now the game is in your hands.
10:07Yeah, fourth and eight decision.
10:08They did not execute there.
10:10Jets were inconsistent with the offensive play calling throughout this game for sure.
10:15Last thing for me here, Ty, because, all right, Jets are 0-6 now.
10:19You generally are what your record says that you are.
10:22But has this team given you any reason at all to have any hope that a change is going to come soon
10:28and that they're not the same old Jets?
10:31Like, have they given you any hope or are you just like, look, man, this is the same old Jets here?
10:35Oh, a change is going to come?
10:36You're giving me the Sam Cooke song?
10:37I gave you the Sam Cooke.
10:38I hit you with the Sam Cooke.
10:39That's what you're hitting me with now, man?
10:41I hit you with the Sam Cooke, man.
10:42But it's funny because we already had the Malcolm X reference played by Denzel Washington
10:47in that movie Sam Cooke on the soundtrack.
10:51So I like the little chemistry.
10:52Yo, New York Post sports, man.
10:54We got that chemistry here.
10:55Make sure you guys don't not pay attention to that.
11:01Listen, you're 0-6.
11:04You are the worst team in football.
11:07The one thing we can celebrate is that for the first time all year, you got a turnover,
11:14which, by the way, you go back and look at the play.
11:17The only reason why it was fumbled was because the Jets initially had a missed tackle.
11:24Because if they had tackled him and he had gone down, it's not a fumble.
11:27Because he broke the tackle and he's running, they were able to get their hands on the ball.
11:31But zero takeaways coming into today, that changed.
11:35You were the only winless team in football.
11:38Your defense did play better.
11:40But when you come up with another L, why am I to believe?
11:46Especially because it's not just that you're losing.
11:49And we've talked about this before, Dexter.
11:51It's how you're losing.
11:53Finding ways to lose games.
11:55And that is symbolic of bad coaching and a culture that just has not gravitated toward being able to figure out how to win.
12:06The coaching in this game was an unmitigated disaster.
12:10That clock management, and we haven't talked about this, at the end of that first half was like the worst I've ever seen.
12:17They went for it on fourth and one, a fake punt, picked up the first down, and then decided the half is over.
12:25So what's the point of picking up the first down?
12:28You're close to midfield.
12:30At least a try, at least attempt a Hail Mary because maybe he catches it.
12:37Maybe you pick up a penalty.
12:38Something can happen.
12:40There is a reward to that.
12:42There's no reward to just allowing the clock to just get down to zero.
12:46And you're going to halftime.
12:49So do I take away anything other than it's the same old Jets?
12:54Anything other than they're the worst team in football?
12:57Absolutely not.
12:58Because this head coach appears to be over his head.
13:03It appears to be that he's overwhelmed by having to fix this disaster.
13:09That is the organization that can't win football games, that is accustomed to losing, and the fact that in the midst of this football game, he's just making bad decisions, man.
13:19And so I'm fired up.
13:22I said I wasn't angry.
13:24But you get me to start reliving the game, it's like, bruh, come on now.
13:29Come on.
13:29See, it's not what I wanted.
13:31I didn't want you to have to relive the trauma.
13:34But it's tough.
13:35I mean, it's hard to not say same old Jets.
13:37You're right.
13:380-6, worst team in football right now.
13:41It ain't easy being green for the fans of game games.
13:43Let me just say this real quick.
13:45Go.
13:45Because everyone is going to rush, too.
13:47You've got to be patient.
13:50Who did I see?
13:51I saw someone on ESPN saying that the other day, talking to Aaron Glenn about how he has to be patient.
13:57Oh, it was Tony Dungy.
13:58Because you look at the head coaches, including Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, who, like, their first season did not start off well.
14:06It was an inauspicious beginning to their tenures.
14:08And had those guys have been given up on, obviously, the success that followed would not have happened.
14:14But Aaron Glenn is not Bill Parcells.
14:18He's not Joe Gibbs.
14:19So you're putting a lot of faith into a guy who's never done this job before for an organization that has been a dumpster fire.
14:29And I think that is the main reason why Jet fans today are searching for answers as to whether or not he's headed toward one-and-done.
14:38That's going to be a conversation, man.
14:39Like, could he be a one-and-done head coach?
14:41I don't think it's going to happen.
14:42But there's a reason why people are talking about it.
14:45Yeah.
14:45It's going to be a conversation going forward, especially if they do not get any more wins.
14:50I'm not saying they're going to go 0-17.
14:51Not saying that.
14:52Oh, could you imagine?
14:53But, like, the longer they go without winning, it's going to only increase the conversation.
14:57And then Ty's going to be back up here with me talking about it and hopefully not a stress.
15:01Yeah, what you got?
15:02How about what?
15:03Who wins first, the Jets or the Knicks?
15:07I'm going to put my money on the Knicks.
15:08I'm not saying I'm betting.
15:09I'm just saying it might be smart.
15:10Wait, because the Knicks are, what, 10 days?
15:12What, the Knicks are 10 days from now?
15:1410 days away from the start of the Knicks season.
15:15Knicks might get a win before the Jets.
15:17Oh, man.
15:17I like that.
15:19We'll see.
15:20That is Tyreek Butler.
15:22Check him out on ESPN New York Radio.
15:24Also check out his show on YouTube, The Tyreek Butler Show.
15:27Check it out.
15:27I know he's going to have a good rant for you guys tomorrow about the Jets for sure.
15:31Ty, I appreciate you, man.
15:32Stay well.
15:33And don't let the Jets ruin your week.
15:36Oh, nah.
15:36We're all good, man.
15:37It's all into better things.
15:39I appreciate you, bro.
15:40No problem, man.
15:41We're all good.
