00:00Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have extended their Netflix deal.
00:05Now, that sounds like a pretty good piece of news for anyone who's interested in the filming industry.
00:10However, as with all things Harry and Meghan, this new deal with Netflix has its fair share of complications.
00:17Number one, insiders tell Page Six that it is worth substantially less than the $100 million contract
00:23that they previously signed with the streaming giant.
00:26Number two, the deal has actually been downgraded.
00:30Now, while Harry and Meghan previously had what's described as an overall contract with Netflix,
00:36which basically means that the streaming giant took care of everything from sign-off on the projects
00:40to filming to production and so on, this new deal is described as a first-look contract.
00:47What that means is that Harry and Meghan will come up with the ideas for their projects,
00:51they'll film them, they'll produce them, they'll do all of that stuff,
00:54and it's up to Netflix to either thumbs up or thumbs down each individual series.
00:59Now, Harry and Meghan do already have a number of different projects in the work with Netflix,
01:05the first of which is a holiday special of Meghan's rather divisive lifestyle show,
01:10With Love, Meghan.
01:12According to a statement released by Netflix and the couple's Archwell production company,
01:16the series special is going to take a look at her decking the halls,
01:21not in her own Montecito home, of course,
01:23but decking the halls of some home somewhere along with her friends, perhaps even a few celebrities.
01:30Chances are Mindy Kaling won't be returning,
01:33given the reprimand she got for referring to Meghan as Meghan Markle and not Meghan Sussex,
01:38but who knows who else Meghan will pull out of the bag.
01:41Then they have a documentary in the works that is going to spotlight an orphanage in Uganda
01:46in an area that is still being impacted by the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
01:51Now, Prince Harry has a lasting connection to this region of the world,
01:54which began with his mother, Princess Diana,
01:57who did extensive work in Africa helping victims of AIDS and HIV during her life.
02:04A third project, which is an adaptation of Carly Fortune's book,
02:07Meet Me at the Lake, has been in development for some time now,
02:10and this announcement prompted many fans to question where on earth it is.
02:15While Meghan didn't address that speculation whatsoever,
02:18she did release a statement voicing her pride at the extended deal.
02:23Meghan's personal brand, As Ever, is also closely linked with Netflix,
02:27which is one of her business partners in the endeavor.
02:30During her lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan,
02:33she was seen touting a number of different products that her brand has since released,
02:37and she explained in a press release that they look forward to expanding the work
02:41that those two brands are going to do together.
02:44In a press release obtained by Page Six, Meghan wrote,
02:47We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together
02:51to include the As Ever brand.
02:53My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us
02:57and our Archwell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres
03:02that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision.
03:05Meanwhile, Netflix's chief content officer, Bella Baharia,
03:09said that the company is looking forward to being able to entertain their members
03:13along with Harry and Meghan.
03:14So, Netflix is fully invested in the Sussex brand,
03:18despite the fact that their past collaborations have had mixed results.
03:23While With Love, Meghan received a number of viewers in its first few episodes,
03:28a lot of people panned the series for being boring,
03:31with one person even describing it as the visual representation of a sleeping pill.
03:35Meanwhile, a documentary that Harry produced
03:37all about the secret world of glamorous professional polo
03:42was panned by critics,
03:44largely because it featured Prince Harry barely at all,
03:47with many insisting that the only reason they want to watch anything
03:50produced by the Sussexes is to see the Sussexes.
03:54Now, that's in stark contrast to the documentary
03:57that Harry and Meghan produced about themselves,
03:59in which they did offer a very intimate glimpse inside their lives
04:03since leaving the royal family.
04:04That has thus far been their most successful project for Netflix,
04:08but it remains to be seen whether or not
04:10they're going to open up the doors to their Montecito mansion ever again.
