00:00I can't believe I'm getting my first VMA tonight.
00:04I just have one question.
00:07What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?
00:12In true diva fashion, Mariah Carey threw some shade at MTV
00:16while accepting the Video Vanguard Award
00:18by asking the legendary music channel
00:20what took them so long to hand her a single VMA.
00:24The 56-year-old singer quickly added that she's just kidding
00:28and told the crowd at UBS Arena,
00:30I love you every day, I love you so much, this is amazing.
00:34But there's definitely some truth behind Mariah's diss.
00:36Despite her decade-spanning, chart-topping career,
00:39Mariah had never taken home a single Moon Man
00:43until this year's VMAs when she took home two.
00:46One was the Lifetime Achievement Award
00:48and the other was for Best R&B Video
00:50for her new song, Type Dangerous.
00:53That said, she's been nominated several times
00:55over the 90s, 2000s, and none in the 2010s, but never won.
01:00Most recently, in 2022, she was nominated for Song of the Summer
01:05alongside Lotto and DJ Khaled for Big Energy Remix,
01:09which samples Mariah's number one hit, Fantasy.
01:12They lost that year to Jack Harlow.
01:14Ouch.
01:15But that all changed Sunday night.
01:17Mariah Carey is now the 37th artist to receive the Vanguard Award
01:21since its inception in 1984.
01:24And she's the 8th diva in a row to gain the prestigious
01:27gold-plated Moon Man, since Rihanna took one home back in 2016.
01:31In her acceptance speech, Mariah apparently took it all in stride, saying,
01:36After all this time, I've learned that music evolves,
01:39video evolves, but the fun?
01:41That is eternal.
01:42Her 16th studio album, Here For It All, is out September 26th.
