00:00Imagine you're on a flight, everything seems normal when all of a sudden you hear a loud bang
00:05and fire erupts out of an overhead luggage compartment. Actually, I'm sorry for making
00:12you imagine that because that is terrifying, but it did happen recently. A frightened and very full
00:17China Air flight experienced that very nightmarish scenario IRL. The culprit, as you may or may not
00:24have guessed, lithium batteries. The carry-on combustion filled the cabin with smoke and
00:29forced the plane, which was bound for South Korea, to make an emergency landing in Shanghai.
00:33Video from Chinese social media sites published by NBC News shows flames billowing out of the
00:39compartment as two brave flight attendants armed with fire extinguishers rushed to put out the
00:43blaze. Thankfully, no one was injured. Now, you are allowed to fly with lithium batteries, but as I
00:49think we all just learned from this story, they need to be taken in carry-ons. Obviously, we just saw
00:54this. An explosion in coach is really scary stuff, but if they were in the cargo hold with the checked
01:00bags, a fire could do a lot more damage before being detected.
