Malaysia hopes to finalise a trade deal with the United States during President Donald Trump’s visit to Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (Oct 26), with Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan expressing hopes that existing tariff rates — including 0% on electrical and electronics exports — will be maintained.
00:00Hi, thank you. I'm Dave Rising with the Associated Press.
00:03I'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about how the trade agreement that is expected to be signed tomorrow with the U.S. differs from the simple tariff negotiations that have already taken place.
00:15And I don't know whether it came up with your meetings with the economy ministers, but is Malaysia's success in coming up with this trade deal something that is seen as maybe a template or guidance for other ASEAN members that are currently in negotiations?
00:30This is between Malaysia and U.S.? You are referring to trade?
00:34Correct.
00:35Well, we know a little bit. I know a little bit. But basically this is under the purview of this Ministry of Trade and Economy.
00:41But I hope that we can conclude the trade deal between U.S. and Malaysia and what we enjoy today, 19%, and also zero tariff on E&E, because 60% of Malaysia's export to U.S. is all in the form of E&E.
01:00So if you can maintain that, we are very happy.
01:03And the other ASEAN countries are also in negotiations with the U.S. Is Malaysia's negotiation that is successfully now concluded seen as one that can be used as guidance for others?
01:19I'm not so sure. I cannot be speaking on behalf of other countries. But Malaysia, U.S. will be, we are going to sign a trade deal tomorrow.
