00:00Madagascar's president has fled the country, the head of the opposition and other officials
00:07said on Monday, following weeks of Gen Z protests over corruption and poverty.
00:13A military source, said Andriy Rajolina, flew out of the African country on Sunday on a
00:18French military aircraft.
00:21French radio network RFI reported he had struck a deal with President Emmanuel Macron.
00:26The president's office did not reply to requests for comment.
00:31Opposition leader Sittani Randriana Solaniak said Rajolina's departure came after army
00:36units defected and joined protesters.
00:39The elite CAPSAT unit, which helped Rajolina seize power in a 2009 coup, said over the
00:45weekend that it refused to shoot on protesters and instead escorted thousands to the main
00:50square in the capital, Antananarivo.
00:54Later on Monday, protesters demanded accountability.
00:59After what he did, I think it's best for him to leave Madagascar.
01:03But we're not going to let him go just like that.
01:09He has to be held accountable.
01:12CAPSAT also said at the weekend that it was taking charge of the military and appointed
01:16a new army chief that prompted Rajolina to warn of an attempt to seize power in the island
01:22nation.
01:24Protests erupted at the end of September over water and power shortages, but they quickly
01:28escalated into an uprising over broader grievances, including corruption, bad governance and a lack
01:34of basic services.
01:36At least 22 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and the security forces
01:42since September 25th, according to the UN.
