00:00DIY SOS is back.
00:06We are for it.
00:07Let's get going.
00:08Come on, in we come.
00:09Oh, my gosh.
00:10I love it so much.
00:11It's stunning.
00:12Look at this, Ralph.
00:13Yeah.
00:15Taking on extraordinary builds.
00:18Look at that.
00:19It's over the house.
00:20Hello.
00:21For even more extraordinary people.
00:24Here we go.
00:25I didn't think I'd ever get upstairs.
00:29Again.
00:30Send all the builders down.
00:33Along with our secret weapon.
00:35It's like an army.
00:36There's a lot of people, aren't there?
00:37There's no comment.
00:38The great British public.
00:40I'm excited.
00:41I didn't know I had this many friends.
00:46This time.
00:47She fell down the stairs and broke her neck.
00:50We're helping a family in South East London.
00:52Are we up for this?
00:53Yeah.
00:54It feels so good.
00:58But with huge ambition.
00:59Look at the size of this thing.
01:02Comes even bigger risk.
01:05Where's everyone with the wheelbarrow?
01:07Let's go.
01:08Everybody upstairs out of the building now, please.
01:11What's plan B?
01:12There isn't plan B.
01:13Look at the reach on that crane.
01:16Is it the right way round?
01:19I've come to Eltham in South London.
01:34Where almost two years ago to the day, mum of five, Zoe, had a terrible accident at home and died.
01:41The children had to come to terms with the loss of their mother.
01:44And against all the odds, have rallied together to stay together.
01:47The trouble is, with all of them living in the house, there just isn't enough room.
01:52So I've come to see if there's anything we can do to help.
01:56I'm coming.
01:57Have you done your homework?
01:58Yeah, I have.
01:59She, it's time to get up, bro.
02:02You want a coffee?
02:03I don't drink coffee anymore.
02:04It is a busy household.
02:05Hello.
02:06Hello.
02:07Welcome back.
02:08Oh, thank you.
02:09Yeah, it can be quite chaotic at times.
02:10There's always something that needs doing.
02:14Open my eyes.
02:15I try my best.
02:16I'm not up to the standard that my mum was doing.
02:19She was just a superwoman.
02:20Tammy and I weren't expecting to be parents.
02:22Happy birthday dear mummy.
02:23I was up to the standard that my mum was doing.
02:25She was just a superwoman.
02:26And so I was like...
02:27Oh, thank you.
02:28Hello.
02:29Hello.
02:30Hello.
02:31Welcome back.
02:32Oh, thank you.
02:33Yeah, it can be quite chaotic at times.
02:34There's always something that needs doing.
02:35Open my eyes.
02:36I try my best.
02:37I'm not up to the standard that my mum was doing.
02:39She was just a superwoman.
02:42Tammy and I weren't expecting to be parents.
02:48Hi, Mummy!
02:50So, February 18th, 2023.
02:54Yay!
02:56I'd had a few phone calls with my mum.
02:59All of a sudden, the phone cut out.
03:02And then, probably about 15 minutes later,
03:05Shay called me and just literally was like,
03:08Mum's dead.
03:12She fell down the stairs and she broke her neck.
03:16She made me wonder as to why,
03:18why something like that could happen to someone so great.
03:27So, when I got home, I went in and I lay down next to her.
03:31All I kept saying was, like, I promise I'll look after them.
03:36Like, I'll just do everything I can
03:39to make sure that they're happy and safe.
03:46Determined to keep the family together,
03:49Summer and Samuel became the legal guardians
03:51for 17-year-old Shay, 11-year-old Sadie
03:55and 7-year-old Seth, who's blind, autistic
03:58and has chronic kidney disease.
04:00Well done. We're almost finished.
04:02But taking on the role of mum and dad is a constant juggle.
04:06I'm in Liverpool Monday to Friday
04:08because I'm studying to be a doctor.
04:12So, Samuel does everything during the week,
04:15all of the housework stuff,
04:17just keeping everything together.
04:20He's literally, as a 23-year-old,
04:23given up his life, his goals,
04:26because he was planning to go travelling.
04:28There's no words to explain the selflessness,
04:32like, about that.
04:39Hello. Hello. Come in.
04:41Hello, everyone. This is Shay.
04:43Shay. Yeah, nice to meet you.
04:44Got Sadie. Sadie.
04:46Say hello, Seth. Hello. Hello.
04:49So, busy then, like, five of you?
04:51Yeah, it can be quite annoying.
04:53I grew up in a family of five,
04:54so I kind of know what it feels like
04:55in a house about the same size as well.
04:57Chaos.
04:58Yeah, chaos, noisy, busy.
05:00Right, so this is the main sort of living area
05:01where you all hang out?
05:02Yeah.
05:03Yeah.
05:04This is, like, the little communal space.
05:06Can I see what, like, the back room?
05:07Yeah.
05:08Have a look.
05:10So, I guess this is the engine room
05:12of the operation and the cooking and cleaning
05:14and everything else.
05:15It's a lot, isn't it?
05:16Qualifying to be a doctor is enough in itself.
05:17Yeah.
05:18But I have to say, Samuel,
05:19you've taken on such a huge amount.
05:22It'd be worth it when she becomes a doctor, right?
05:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:25It would be a lot easier then.
05:26But, yeah, I was planning to go travelling
05:28around South America,
05:29and I know I'll still be able to do that eventually.
05:32It wasn't going to happen the way you planned it,
05:34but it will happen.
05:35It will happen.
05:36Yeah.
05:37That's amazing.
05:38Yeah.
05:39I love the fact that you've got all the pictures
05:40up on the wall here as well.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Just plainly, your mum features heavily in all of them.
05:44Yeah.
05:45We wanted to have her around us all the time.
05:47Because it's only two years, isn't it?
05:49Yeah.
05:50At what point after the accident did the two of you go,
05:52we need to take on the kids?
05:54It was the same night.
05:55There was never any doubt in our minds
05:57that we wanted to stay together.
05:59What was the alternative?
06:00We would have had to send the children into care.
06:03It wasn't even a possibility.
06:05All right, so I need to have a look round
06:07and have a look at where the difficulties are
06:09so that I can work out whether there's anything
06:11we can do to help out.
06:12Yeah, absolutely.
06:16I hesitate to bring this up,
06:18but obviously this is the site of the accident.
06:21Are you all right to talk about that?
06:22Yeah.
06:24It was just such a freak accident,
06:26and the actual stairs haunt me every day.
06:29I see visions of it all the time.
06:32It's really horrible, like, having that constantly.
06:35Such a difficult thing to deal with.
06:37Shall we go and have a look upstairs?
06:38Yeah, of course.
06:39Can we come in?
06:43Yeah, you can come in.
06:45Hello?
06:46Hello.
06:47Sit down.
06:48So this is your room?
06:49This is my and Seth's room.
06:50An Seth's room?
06:51Yeah.
06:52Shea comes in at night to change his nappy,
06:55so the stage is, like, quite disrupted.
06:57Yeah, that's not ideal to be sharing a room, is it?
06:59It's not the best.
07:01It would be better if we could all have our own space.
07:06So this is your room?
07:08Yeah.
07:09Is it all your stuff in here, or have you got lots of...
07:11No, it's a lot of my mum's as well.
07:13Most of our mum's stuff has been put in the garage,
07:16but there are some bits in here that just...
07:18I just haven't been able to move.
07:20Well, you've got a lot on your mind, haven't you?
07:22You've got a lot to do.
07:23Yeah.
07:24You're right.
07:25I've got a lot to do.
07:26I've got a lot to do.
07:27I've got a lot to do.
07:28I've got a lot to do.
07:29I've got a lot to do.
07:30I've got a lot to do.
07:31I've got a lot to do.
07:32And he typically lives in a cave.
07:33Oh, it's just this one behind you.
07:34The cupboard?
07:35Yeah.
07:36Yeah.
07:37It feels like it.
07:38Oh, you're right.
07:39Wow, this is tight, isn't it?
07:40Yeah, it is a bit, yeah.
07:41Yeah, a little bit, but...
07:42Shane never complains.
07:44And it's not helped by the fact that you can't even get to the door
07:47because of the ladder, which leads up into the loft.
07:50Yeah, that's Samuel's room.
07:52Oh, Samuel's in the loft?
07:53Yeah.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Justice Bill, I don't live in a place like this.
07:57I can barely get through the hole.
08:00Is there any heating up here?
08:01No, it gets pretty cold.
08:03Yeah, cold and that ladder is not ideal.
08:06A big hole in the floor, you can fall through.
08:08It's not actually a loft conversion.
08:09It's like, it's a boarded-out loft.
08:11You're actually living in a space that you shouldn't really be living in.
08:14Mm-hmm. Yeah.
08:17That's a good-sized garden, isn't it?
08:19Yeah, it's quite big.
08:21And what's this, a shed?
08:22It has the garage doors at the back.
08:24Oh, so there's access at the back?
08:25Yeah.
08:27Wow.
08:29Wow.
08:31What's all the bags of stuff?
08:33It's all my mum's clothes.
08:34It's just literally being, oh, bung it in the garage.
08:37We'll sort it another time.
08:38Um, you can see she was quite hippie.
08:41This is very her, is it?
08:42Very her.
08:43Yeah.
08:44It actually smells like her as well, which is, it's really nice.
08:49I know we don't need it all.
08:51I know it needs doing.
08:51The lack of space is a real problem.
08:55They shouldn't all be home.
08:56You know, summer should be off at university.
08:58Samuel should be travelling the world, which would leave just the three children, which
09:02would be okay.
09:03But that's not the circumstance they find themselves in now.
09:07And we can make it better.
09:09I know that we can make life better for them.
09:12Let me put myself on the end here with everybody.
09:14Sure.
09:14I've had a really good look around the house.
09:17I've got to know you.
09:19I've kind of got to know your mum a little bit.
09:21Now, if we come and do this, we've got to pretty much destroy the house to make it work
09:26the way that it needs to work.
09:28Do you think that's okay?
09:29Yeah, I think we should do it.
09:33You think?
09:33Yeah, I feel like she would want us to do it.
09:36You do need help, don't you?
09:38Yes.
09:39I think we do.
09:40The good news is, I think we can change what you have here and give you everything you need.
09:45So, we will come and do the house for him.
09:52Oh, my gosh.
09:53That's crazy.
09:54It will just be so much easier.
09:56Mad.
09:57It will be life-changing.
09:59Yeah.
10:00Big hug.
10:01Yeah.
10:01My hug.
10:02Yay.
10:04I like this family.
10:05The way they've come together in such extreme circumstances, I think is nothing short of amazing.
10:10Wrestle.
10:11Not yourself.
10:12Not yourself.
10:14It's a really difficult thing to do, but I genuinely believe we can make life easier for
10:19this family who absolutely need their community to give them a little lift.
10:24Morning.
10:36Morning.
10:37Six weeks later, I'm back in south-east London.
10:41And all the family's possessions have been put into storage by the team.
10:46Nick's coming.
10:46Yeah, here he comes.
10:47Hello.
10:49Good morning, Hayden.
10:50Good to see you.
10:52How are you feeling?
10:54Excited, but a mixture of angst.
10:57I'm still slightly nervous until we see the number of bodies that we need and the skills
11:01that we need.
11:02You literally don't know until they walk up the road.
11:09Oh, here they're coming.
11:10You don't want to talk about it.
11:18You don't want to talk about you.
11:21You don't want to talk about you.
11:22You don't want to die.
11:23It's like an army.
11:26How's it matter?
11:30They're still coming.
11:33They look like minions.
11:35Yeah, they do, don't they?
11:36And about the same number as well.
11:39You want to go outside and say hello to them?
11:40Yeah, definitely.
11:41That sounds good, doesn't it?
11:43Yeah.
11:44Let's go.
11:45Ready, Seth?
11:45Steps down.
11:57Thank you all so much.
11:58These last two years have been extremely difficult.
12:04We couldn't have done something like this without you guys.
12:07This is so generous of you all.
12:10What is it that you need all these people to do for you with this home?
12:14The main thing is just more space for all of us, I think.
12:16I want my own room.
12:17Which doesn't seem unreasonable, does it?
12:19Please.
12:19And I'm seeing this as like a new beginning, a fresh start.
12:26I don't think there's anything in this world more valuable than time and love.
12:31And that's what everyone here has given us.
12:34It's quite literally life-changing.
12:36So, thank you so much.
12:42Thank you very much.
12:49Right.
12:50We need a massive first day from you inside and out.
12:54Are we up for this?
12:55Yeah!
12:56Let's get in there and get started.
12:57If we're going to make this house right for the family, we need to strip everything back
13:14to basics.
13:16It is hectic and really, really mucky work.
13:19It feels so good.
13:20It feels so good.
13:24Are you all right, boys?
13:30All good.
13:31Scaffold's up, which is great.
13:34Ceiling's down.
13:35Beautiful.
13:35All this wall's going, that ceiling's going, roof's coming off, and then we're going to
13:41fly a new roof because the extensions are going to come all the way to here.
13:45A new single-storey extension will give the family over 25% more living space.
13:51But with five people living under one roof, we need to get creative with the rest of the
13:56house.
13:57A complex build this time for lots of different reasons.
14:00Obviously, the stairs are a real issue because that was where mum fell and died.
14:06So, I just want it to be less of a focal point.
14:08Can we change the handrail with everything, just make it look different?
14:11Absolutely.
14:11I mean, make it aesthetically different, but then functionally exactly the same.
14:16On the upside, we have a house that has three bedrooms, but we need to find five bedrooms
14:21in there.
14:22Converting the loft just isn't a possibility.
14:24There isn't enough height up there, but we need to get Samuel out of the loft and into
14:28a proper bedroom somewhere.
14:29I think the only solution is we move him downstairs into what was the sitting room.
14:34Then we've got three remaining bedrooms upstairs.
14:37We'll have Seth in the smallest room.
14:40Which makes sense because he only goes to bed and sleeps, whereas Shay actually needs a
14:45proper bedroom to operate in.
14:46Exactly.
14:47And then we have Sadie in the room she's in now, but it will be all for her.
14:50So, she's going to love that.
14:52On the ground floor, we're creating a new entrance hall that will hide the remodeled staircase.
14:57And a large open plan kitchen diner with living space created in the new extension will free
15:03up the old sitting room to become Samuel's bedroom.
15:06On the first floor, the layout stays the same, but with the three bedrooms going to Shay,
15:12Sadie and Seth.
15:15But that still leaves us a bedroom short for eldest summer.
15:20Garden.
15:20How big is it?
15:21It's actually a very long garden.
15:23And at the end, there was a really dilapidated garage, but it all had a load of asbestos in,
15:28so we had to have that cleared out.
15:29Good size, Shay.
15:30Yeah, absolutely.
15:31You could get, I mean, pods are the possibility, isn't it?
15:34Yeah.
15:34If we can get a big pod in there.
15:36When you say a pod, you mean a self-contained, finished dwelling.
15:40Yeah, you could put in your back.
15:41There's no plaster in it.
15:42It comes pre-built.
15:44Bang.
15:44That would be amazing.
15:45Agreed.
15:45Outside, the addition of a garden pod as a fifth bedroom would provide summer with her
15:51own space when she's home from university.
15:54But installing a large ready-made studio flat at the end of a garden comes with multiple
15:59challenges.
16:01If you wanted to get a pod in there, you'd have to lift it over the house.
16:05If you were going to crane something in...
16:07You want a big one?
16:08I mean ridiculously big.
16:09You're probably talking 50, 60 metres of reach.
16:12And those kind of cranes, there's only about five or six of them in the entire country.
16:17So that sounds like...
16:17We only need one.
16:19That's a very good point.
16:20We can certainly ask.
16:22That would be amazing.
16:23What do you reckon, Ashley?
16:24Do you even got room for a pod and a decent garden as well?
16:27Yeah, it's a huge space.
16:28I want to make it feel natural and maybe create a kind of woodland-style garden.
16:32Yeah.
16:33Can we grow something that they can eat?
16:34That would be amazing, like having a mini fruit orchard.
16:36Yeah.
16:36Yeah, that's a really nice way to connect to nature.
16:39Yeah, we need to honour Zoe's warmth and a slightly hippie taste.
16:44So we're going to try and every room will have something in it of her.
16:49And I really want it to have her vibe.
16:51Love it.
16:51Let's go.
16:56Oh, my God.
16:58That is amazing.
17:01Oh, my God.
17:06Let's get over a bit.
17:07We're just hours into the build, and the new 14-square-metre extension is already taking shape.
17:14This is the top.
17:15That's the bottom.
17:17You reckon?
17:18Hold on.
17:19No, this is the bottom.
17:19That's the top.
17:22Really need to crack on.
17:23We've got to crack on.
17:24After calling in some special favours, build manager Hod has not only sourced a garden pod,
17:30but also a crane big enough to lift it over the house.
17:33Well done, Hod.
17:34Brilliant.
17:34The pod that's coming in, seven metres long, four and a half metres wide.
17:40How much does it weigh?
17:40Just over four tonnes.
17:42That's nuts.
17:43What's the distance there?
17:4366.6.
17:4466 metres, yeah.
17:46Long way.
17:46Yeah.
17:46That's going to have to be a massive crane.
17:49Nick, it's one of the biggest cranes in the UK that's doing this.
17:52And how many days have we got it for?
17:54We've got it for a few hours.
17:56That's...
17:57Talk about building excitement into a build.
18:01It's 11 o'clock tomorrow.
18:02We are lifting.
18:03That is the cutoff time.
18:04Everybody's got to come out.
18:05What's the maximum wind speed that we're allowed?
18:0720 knots, which is about 17 mile an hour.
18:09So what happens if he turns up and it's over 17 miles an hour?
18:14Can't do it.
18:15As simple as that.
18:19Like groundworks services for the pods?
18:22All today.
18:22And if we don't, what's plan B?
18:24There isn't plan B.
18:25No.
18:26If we don't get all of that done today, we won't do it.
18:29With less than 24 hours to get the foundations for the garden pod ready...
18:39Any volunteers that are capable, if you can get a wheelbarrow, please?
18:43It's all hands on deck.
18:47Do you have any more wheelbarrowers in the yard, please?
18:51It's a real challenge.
18:53You've got a lot of people all working together in a very confined area.
18:59It's a lot to manage.
19:05But that's the excitement of it.
19:11This is actually starting to look like an extension.
19:15It's mad.
19:16I mean, to pressure today on this team to get this done is really intense.
19:24But as the day draws to a close,
19:26the garden pod's groundworks are far from ready.
19:30We're running out of time.
19:31Oh, the wind!
19:34The winds don't...
19:36If this is this way tomorrow,
19:40we don't do the lift.
19:44If we don't lift this thing in tomorrow,
19:47between 11 and 1,
19:48there is no fifth bedroom.
19:50A genuine disaster
19:52in terms of what we're trying to provide this family.
19:54Before dawn, 100 tons of steel and hydraulics
20:13is escorted around the M25.
20:16Heading towards the biggest lift we've ever attempted.
20:27Here it comes.
20:28Look at that.
20:29Unbelievable.
20:35I'll tell you what,
20:37when it gets close,
20:38it suddenly feels a lot bigger, doesn't it?
20:40Yeah.
20:40Look at the size of this thing.
20:42You're looking at three and three-quarter million pounds worth of crane right now.
20:50Three and three-quarter million pounds worth of crane?
20:52Three and three-quarter million pounds.
20:54That's a big crane.
20:56I wonder if you let me drive it.
20:57No, no, no.
20:58Don't ask him.
21:01Ladies and gentlemen,
21:01it is quarter past eight now.
21:04We will be doing the lift at 11 o'clock.
21:06We have to close down the site
21:09and get everybody out
21:10for two hours minimum.
21:12So we have to hit it really, really hard this morning.
21:16Okay, are we up for this?
21:17Yes!
21:18Lovely.
21:18Thank you very much.
21:25There's a 300 work surface.
21:27This is so intense in here.
21:31You know, we've got stubbles going up,
21:34pipe work going down here.
21:35I mean, it's just...
21:37Ah!
21:38Have you got your finger in the hole?
21:42Are you finished, first bit?
21:44No.
21:45We're a bit behind, aren't we?
21:47Yeah.
21:51The crane is literally moving over the garden right now.
21:53As the crane moves into position,
21:58Ash and his team are still building the foundations
22:01for the garden pod to sit on.
22:04Everything's happening all at once now.
22:05We've got concrete coming down on that end,
22:07we've got the patio stone going down,
22:08and we've literally got, like, an hour.
22:11That's 150.
22:11That's exactly on that.
22:13That's exactly it.
22:16Right on schedule,
22:17the four-and-a-half-ton garden pod has also arrived.
22:20That's a very pretty pod, isn't it?
22:24It is a very pretty pod, yes.
22:27What's the frame that it sits on?
22:29That is the frame it sits on.
22:32We have a small issue.
22:34What have you got there?
22:35Yeah, 250-ish.
22:38This steel frame means the pod will sit 25 centimetres
22:41above ground level.
22:43Andy?
22:45We've suddenly discovered that the pod sits on a 250 frame.
22:50You don't want two steps out of the pod
22:51to get onto the patio, do you?
22:52Absolutely not, no.
22:55It's going to have to be lower.
22:57We'll have to get the digger in here.
22:58We need to move.
22:59You've got, like...
23:01I can do it.
23:03We'll go for it, then.
23:03Go on.
23:04Let's go.
23:05I'll hold the pod off as long as I can.
23:12The frame was going to sit too high,
23:14which meant that as you came out the doors,
23:15you were going to have to go down steps.
23:16There's no point in having sliding open patio doors
23:18and then it goes straight down steps.
23:20So we're going to dig it into the ground by about this much.
23:24Where's everyone with the wheelbarrow?
23:26Let's go.
23:32So we are now about to attempt
23:34the fastest groundwork reconstruction
23:36in the history of the OSOS
23:38before we do the largest lift
23:39in the history of the OSOS.
23:41It's got about 20 minutes.
23:43You can get a sewer pipe in,
23:44a water pipe in,
23:45lower the MOT,
23:46and get it at the right level.
23:51We're really up against it.
23:53This is tight.
23:59It's like...
24:00Here we are trying to do this
24:02magnificent thing,
24:03and the world is conspiring
24:07not to let it happen.
24:09Yeah.
24:10That's all right, mate.
24:12We'll get through it.
24:14We'll get through it.
24:15We always do.
24:21Excuse me,
24:22we're coming through.
24:22Five-minute warning.
24:23Five-minute warning of clearing the house out.
24:26They want to lift in five minutes.
24:27Yeah, we're done.
24:28We're here.
24:28One more padstone.
24:29We're done.
24:29OK, ready to lift.
24:34Everybody out,
24:35including the roof, please.
24:36Everybody out.
24:37Everybody upstairs
24:38out of the building now, please.
24:43With the groundworks complete,
24:45it's now just a small matter
24:46of lifting the four-and-a-half-ton pod
24:48over the house
24:49and 66 metres
24:51to the far end of the garden.
24:53And the wind speed is currently
24:5511 gusting to 21,
24:58which is OK.
24:59OK, everyone,
25:05we're ready to go.
25:05Stand by.
25:11Good.
25:12Nice and slow, mate.
25:19I can't look.
25:24Seriously impressive, right?
25:26Well, those four little bolts
25:28just don't seem enough.
25:28Don't, don't.
25:29On the stomach's knocked.
25:31Keep it going, Rami.
25:32A bit more.
25:34Look at that.
25:34It's over the house.
25:36Right, come on.
25:36Around the back.
25:39Look at the reach
25:40on that crane.
25:41OK, Craig, just hold it there.
25:53OK, mate, keep booming down, please.
25:55Steady slew to the left.
25:56This garden pod needs to land on its foundations
26:00with millimetre precision
26:02to avoid damaging nearby property.
26:08It looks tight.
26:09It should slot in.
26:11Find out in a minute.
26:14Is it the right way around?
26:15Nice and easy, please, slew to the right.
26:20I'd like to go in that way a bit.
26:21Stop.
26:24Yeah, we'll twist it in a second.
26:25Are we all right on that bit there?
26:26Yeah, you need to go a bit more, lads, if you can.
26:28Another three or four inches
26:29so it makes all the difference.
26:32Couple more inches, that way he wants.
26:38Yo, I'm happy where it is.
26:40Everyone's happy.
26:41If we can start coming down on the hoist, please.
26:44Yeah.
26:45We're about an inch off the floor.
26:51We have a round of applause
26:52for the guys on the crane.
26:53Pull it in.
26:54Turn to the birds off, go!
27:03I'll tell you what.
27:05Well done, Andy.
27:08We can do this on every job.
27:10No, we'll never do this again.
27:13Right, come on, let's get to it.
27:18Woo-hoo!
27:19Woo-hoo!
27:20It's beautiful.
27:21Well, I wasn't sure whether it would be plastered.
27:23It's a birch ply.
27:24Chris is going to be over the moon.
27:25Yeah, kitchen here, bathrooms are.
27:28Very, very good.
27:30I'm not going to push here, though.
27:31I want to get that done first
27:33and then we'll come to this, because afterwards...
27:35What's it about?
27:38Go down.
27:39Come here.
27:39All right.
27:41After two hours with no work inside the house...
27:44Look, there's a spark, look.
27:46It's a cremling.
27:47We need to play catch-up.
27:50There's over 40.
27:51All this is plastered here.
27:53We'll leave them to it.
27:54Just get out of the way.
27:55Honestly, you'll get covered in the middle.
27:58Just to love it.
27:59While the plasterers get to work...
28:00YUMBER!
28:04Gabby has been speaking to the family
28:06about designs for their new bedrooms.
28:09Bedroom, bedroom, bedroom.
28:10That's a little small one there.
28:11All right, so what's the vibe for Seth?
28:13Seth loves texture.
28:15He loves being cosy.
28:16So it's going to look like a ship's cabin.
28:19It's going to be lined with acoustic walling in timber.
28:23Shea wants a proper man cave.
28:25Man cave.
28:26He did actually ask for a bear skin rug,
28:28but I don't think we can go around shooting bears.
28:30Not really.
28:31No red, because he's a Chelsea supporter.
28:33He's very concerned I might accidentally give him
28:35an Arsenal-inspired bedroom.
28:37And then Sadie, who is such a funny character.
28:40What's really great for young girls Sadie's age
28:42is just give them spaces they can personalise
28:45with photos of their friends.
28:46She wants soft colours, but nothing too twee.
28:49Yeah.
28:49And I like that Samuel's pleasure in being downstairs
28:51means that when everybody else has got a bed,
28:53he's basically got the run of the place.
28:55Yeah.
28:56I want this design to nurture them
28:58as the beautiful individual young people they are,
29:00and to really honour that.
29:06Goodbye.
29:06Goodbye.
29:10It's so storage-y.
29:18Like Raiders of the Lost Ark, isn't it?
29:20Look at it.
29:20That's a lot.
29:22A few miles away from the build
29:24is the family's storage unit.
29:27Hello.
29:28Hello.
29:28Hello there.
29:29How you doing?
29:30We're meeting up with Samuel, Summer and Shea
29:32to help them pick out items
29:34to bring back to their new home.
29:37So these are your two containers.
29:38Oh, my goodness.
29:41I thought there would be some walking room.
29:42Packed out, isn't it?
29:43That's crazy.
29:45For me, I'd really love to have
29:47a couple of bags of clothes
29:49your mum loved to wear
29:50that you don't mind me repurposing
29:52to make something beautiful.
29:54I think it sounds like a lovely idea.
29:56Yeah, I think it's a great idea.
29:58What have we got in here?
30:00This says daffodil picture.
30:02Mum's painting.
30:03She was so creative.
30:04Really?
30:04Oh, that's lovely.
30:07Wow.
30:07OK, we'll find a lovely place for this.
30:12She likes big, baggy dresses like that.
30:14Yeah, she dresses.
30:15Oh, my rugby club.
30:17Is that you?
30:18Yeah, man, that's my 50th cap.
30:20Wow.
30:21It's the club I've played with
30:22since I was a boy, so.
30:23That, obviously, has to be a keep.
30:24Yeah, yeah, 100%.
30:25Yeah.
30:26OK.
30:27So what I love, yeah,
30:27is sort of patterns and weaves and colours that...
30:30There you go.
30:31Look at that embroidery.
30:32They're so mum.
30:34And there's another one.
30:35I don't really have any attachment to clothes, no.
30:38OK.
30:38The only thing I maybe probably have attachment to
30:40is, like, ornaments, not clothes.
30:46Shea was just 17 when his mum died.
30:50When you see all that stuff,
30:52how do you think your brother and sister
30:54are handling that process?
30:55Samuel is more so like me.
30:57He's more so willing just to donate most things,
31:00whereas Summer, I can understand,
31:02she wants to keep onto them.
31:03But realistically, I think she knows deep down
31:05she has got to let it go.
31:07You're very aware of each other's feelings, aren't you?
31:09Yeah, of course.
31:09Do you think that's happened
31:10because of the situation you're in?
31:11Yeah, and it's also the way our mother raised us.
31:14Like, we all got raised siblings, family, number one,
31:17no matter what, innit?
31:18On the day that it happened,
31:19you were in the house and you were the one that found her?
31:21Yeah, it was, yeah, me and Seth in the house.
31:24And then I just got downstairs
31:25and I thought she was passed out.
31:28And then, obviously, it happened.
31:31And the first thing I did,
31:32I just ran to my neighbours and I got help.
31:35Man, that's a hell of a thing to find your mum.
31:38Yeah.
31:39I've tried counselling,
31:40but I'd rather just speak to my siblings
31:42because we're all so close anyway.
31:43I love the fact that you and your brothers and sisters
31:46like to talk about your mum.
31:49I like to speak about my mum
31:50because it brings me happy emotions.
31:55When I sort of see, like, a mother and a child,
31:59maybe some people who have been grieving
32:01think, like, how dare you sort of have this?
32:04But whenever I do see, like, a mother under their child,
32:06it just makes me genuinely happy
32:08because I think about when I was to leave my mother
32:10when I was a child with her.
32:13Well done, lads!
32:24We're halfway through the build.
32:27Chris and his team of plasterers
32:29are now in every room of the house.
32:31First room completed.
32:34Second room upstairs completed.
32:36There are, like, ants all over it.
32:38With a new hallway built,
32:40Sam's bedroom has been created
32:42from the old sitting room.
32:45That's me.
32:46So the family no longer have to sit and look
32:48at the scene of the accident.
32:50So what are you thinking about this staircase?
32:52I just feel like this is
32:54just the scene of the most awful tragedy.
32:58I just want different spindles, handrail and newel posts.
33:01But doing that is a nightmare
33:03because it's our access to upstairs.
33:06The joinery team are really stretched.
33:08But this is almost psychologically
33:10one of the most important things we can do for the family.
33:12I think probably the most important piece of joinery
33:15is changing this staircase.
33:16That's a terrible memory
33:29which we've managed to get out of the house.
33:32Hopefully that will stop that
33:33constant triggering
33:35of bad memories every day.
33:37The front of the house
33:52is getting some much-needed attention.
33:55There you go.
33:57Imagine how lovely this is going to be for Summer
33:59to get some work done up here.
34:01She's going to actually be able to study.
34:03And in the garden,
34:04Summer's new pod is now taking shape.
34:07So we've got a little kitchenette here.
34:10It's going to have a lovely bed
34:11and a shower in there.
34:13Completely self-contained.
34:15And a desk here.
34:17The mission is get Summer through medical school.
34:20This is why we need this pod.
34:22It's going to be lovely.
34:30The structure to the new extension is now complete.
34:33We've got to sort this out.
34:35Inside it, though,
34:36there's a big issue.
34:38I put a level on it.
34:39It's 45mm underneath there.
34:41This floor, somehow,
34:42has been put in the wrong height.
34:46Laminate flooring is due to be laid later today,
34:48but the fitters need a completely flat surface
34:51throughout the ground floor.
34:53We've got to drop this floor
34:54to work with the house.
34:56If we don't do that,
34:57all of the house is going to be out.
34:59That's going to take probably three,
35:01four hours to sort out,
35:02which we haven't got.
35:07Every floor joist needs pulling up
35:09and cutting down
35:11before being relayed.
35:14Chris,
35:15what's happening?
35:17This was a high spot
35:18and the knock-on
35:19would have gone all the way through
35:20to the front door.
35:22So it was easier
35:22to take this floor up
35:23and lower this.
35:25Chris,
35:26it looks like a bomb
35:27has gone off in here.
35:29This feels like
35:29one of those anxiety dreams,
35:31but it actually really is happening,
35:33isn't it?
35:34It's a while since I've been in there, actually.
35:44Trying to make it
35:45as low-maintenance as possible.
35:46I love the pathway.
35:48Yeah, yeah.
35:48And then you'll bring,
35:49what, turf on this side?
35:50This will be turf.
35:51Then we'll have fruit trees
35:52and they're all going to be
35:53different varieties.
35:54And I've been able to come out,
35:55pick fruit from the garden.
35:57That's going to be lovely.
35:58Yeah,
35:58be really nice and lush.
35:59Need anything else?
36:00Well,
36:01we're waiting for plants.
36:01Oh, plants, okay.
36:03Once they're in,
36:03then I'll feel happier
36:04because that does take quite a while.
36:10This is going to be
36:11Shea's bedroom.
36:12Yes.
36:13Shea wanted a blue bedroom.
36:15Definitely no red.
36:16There's definitely no red in here.
36:18It's a green, isn't it?
36:19Isn't it green?
36:19It's not green.
36:20It's blue.
36:21Burnt sage.
36:22It's not burnt sage.
36:23It's a green, isn't it?
36:23Madman.
36:24What are you talking about?
36:25There's nothing green about this.
36:28What do you think, darling?
36:30It's blue.
36:31It is blue?
36:32Yeah.
36:32All right.
36:33Excuse me, sir.
36:34Can I ask you a question?
36:35What colour is this, blue or green, in this room?
36:38Blue.
36:41It was blue or green.
36:43Which would you go for?
36:44Green.
36:45Oh, damn it!
36:46Thank you very much.
36:48Your work here is done.
36:50Hi, my darling.
36:51Thank you for doing this.
36:53Across the landing...
36:54So he's nine years old, completely blind.
36:58Gabby wants youngest Seth's room to be a quiet retreat.
37:02He just uses his room to sleep in.
37:04So what we need is acoustic panelling on all the walls, just lots of texture.
37:09I think will really help guide Seth so he knows where he is in the room.
37:13And I'm sorry, this is almost like the most work in the smallest room.
37:17Yeah, no problem.
37:17Thank you, sir.
37:18Thank you, guys.
37:19You're all right.
37:23All this brickwork is open.
37:24It needs to come down.
37:25Yeah.
37:26In extension, the carpenters have been hard at him.
37:30Bang on.
37:31Look at that.
37:33Relaying the floor at the correct height.
37:35Gabby, we have a floor.
37:38Easy.
37:38I like how floory it is and how not massive hole-in-the-groundy it is,
37:45because that was not good.
37:46I'm very, very happy.
37:52Ready, ready.
37:56Wait, come in, gents.
37:58While the house is being fitted out, I'm surprising Samuel at his local rugby club.
38:05To make sure today's training session is one he'll remember,
38:08I'm bringing along some good friends of mine.
38:13How are you, eh?
38:15How are you, eh?
38:15Hello.
38:16How are we doing?
38:17Hello, mate.
38:18For those of you that don't know, this is Shorter,
38:21Harlequin's 30 caps for England.
38:23And he's got this bloke.
38:25Joe Barler, 95 caps for England.
38:2895?
38:2995.
38:29Zero tries.
38:32I can't believe you're here.
38:34In good rugby players, this is absolutely insane.
38:37I can't stop smiling.
38:38Right, I'm going to get out of the way, you're going to get on with it.
38:40Oh, you're not training?
38:41Mate, I would do, but if it wasn't for the shrapnel wound,
38:43excuse me, so I'm going to go and see the stand.
38:44Anyone else done their knee?
38:46Here we go, then.
38:47What are you passing to me for?
38:50Yeah, come right, come right, come right.
38:54Good double hit.
38:55Lumber's right.
38:55Tip it!
38:59Where's Sam?
39:00Oh, he's there.
39:00Do you know what I've noticed since meeting you?
39:14That smile on your face has not stopped.
39:17This is such a surprise, having you come down.
39:20Yeah, I haven't been able to stop smiling.
39:23All your teammates are here.
39:24Are they like your brothers?
39:25Yeah.
39:26I love these guys.
39:27How much of these guys helped you deal with everything that's come your way over the last
39:31couple of years?
39:32This team has been my rock.
39:34Like, without playing every Saturday, honestly, I don't know where I'd be.
39:42Nick got in contact with me to tell me a little bit about your story, and that blew me away
39:47that you took on the parent role.
39:50It was so sudden.
39:51I've never really thought about having to take the role on, you know.
39:56Overnight, I turned into a parent.
39:59The only thing that keeps me going is my siblings.
40:02I live for my siblings.
40:05Yeah, we're all in this together.
40:06We're all working for each other.
40:09We all talk so openly to each other, because we understand how important it is to get our
40:14feelings out of our heads.
40:15You're just like a shining example of how important it is to open up and talk about everything
40:23that you're going through.
40:25Having this given to us, it makes me want to give back in the same way.
40:30I love you.
40:31I love you too, man.
40:34I don't think I've ever met someone as inspiring and as strong as you.
40:41I just want to be your mate.
40:43I just, I'm absolutely blown away by you, mate.
40:47Yeah, sorry.
40:47Cheers, partner.
40:48Cheers.
40:50Cheers, gracious boy.
40:54I just think you're wonderful.
40:55Right, OK, our turf's arrived.
41:06We're going to get it in the back garden, just lay it up along the fence.
41:09Everyone take a few rolls each.
41:10Slow game of Jenga.
41:15In just 24 hours, we're due to hand this house back to the family.
41:19Oh, look at that.
41:23There you go.
41:24Oh, that's a lovely job that is.
41:25Thank you very much.
41:26Weirdly, amongst everything else we're doing, I think that's one of the most important jobs
41:29in the house, so, um, yeah, thank you.
41:34It's because they're too fit.
41:35Yeah, go on.
41:36Yeah.
41:37Billy, Radha.
41:39As the kitchen is fitted, Gabby has plans to help Sam with his daily chores.
41:43What are you doing with them eyes?
41:45No, I just want to explain my mad idea and see if we can make it work.
41:48OK.
41:49Making this cupboard into a drying cupboard.
41:54Love it.
41:55But...
41:56Love it.
41:57And what are you going to have in there to dry it?
41:59A dehumidifier, because what I'm trying to do is stop laundry just piling up.
42:04If it's like a wet room, this MDF isn't going to hold up, which means we're going to go solid wood.
42:10So, the cornflakes and anything, potatoes and that, we'll put in one of the bedrooms, shall we?
42:16No, we've got loads of room for that.
42:17Oh, OK.
42:24That's a tight fit.
42:25Very tight fit.
42:26Looks like we've actually plumbed that.
42:32You've got to leave.
42:33Not ideal.
42:34No.
42:35So, there is a set of heating pipes that run across the ceiling through there, on a small hole.
42:40Then we can inspect.
42:41What's going on, guys?
42:43We've got to leave.
42:43We're going to open that ceiling up a bit.
42:46Somewhere, a pipe has been hit.
42:49And the water is following that bit of cable and coming in through the ceiling.
42:58That's day seven.
42:58We need to hand this house over tomorrow evening.
43:00Right, we've got all these trees.
43:06Amazing to plant.
43:07In the garden, we've invited Zoe's mum, the sibling's grandmother, and their extended family
43:12and friends to help plant six fruit trees.
43:16Apple there.
43:18Plum in that corner there.
43:20Nice.
43:21One for Zoe and one for each of her children.
43:24Zoe would love this.
43:34She really would, wouldn't she?
43:35Yeah.
43:45It's a new beginning.
43:46It is a new beginning for the kids.
43:49And Zoe would love this.
43:50She would absolutely adore this.
43:58This is just, it's the essence of Zoe.
44:02It's like, I'm here and I can still feel that my daughter is here.
44:08Can you give me a hug?
44:09Yes.
44:23It's this one here.
44:24It just leaked.
44:25The leaking pipe has been found.
44:29Let's get this paper.
44:30Let's get it.
44:31There's the pipe that we've taken out.
44:33And that there is where a screw has just pierced it.
44:37And that's what's caused the leak.
44:40We're good.
44:41We're good.
44:41We're good.
44:41We're good.
44:41We're good.
44:42Gabby.
44:48Give it a chance.
44:50That is amazing.
44:51Great idea.
44:52I knew he would flip like that.
44:57The garden is really coming together now.
44:59Once you get the plants in, it makes a massive difference.
45:03As we add the finishing touches, Gabby has a plan to bring in as much of mum's colourful character as possible.
45:10Sadie really likes the kind of boho feel, and her mum loved it as well.
45:15So she had fabrics everywhere and all sorts of stuff.
45:17So we've got a beautiful length of sari fabric.
45:21It's just a lovely old way of making a bedroom feel a bit more glamorous and cozy.
45:26She's also bringing in lots of Zoe's possessions we found in storage.
45:30Building out a tray frame for the picture that Zoe painted is really beloved by the kids.
45:35And we want to cut two more pieces, and that should be ready to go on the wall.
45:44Hello.
45:45Hello.
45:46So you must be the team that made the quilts.
45:47We are.
45:48I'm so thrilled.
45:50And after 50 hours of work...
45:52Look at this.
45:54...volunteers from the Dulwich Quilting Group have made something special entirely from Zoe's clothes.
46:00Wow.
46:01It is beautiful.
46:03Oh, look.
46:04So those were the jeans.
46:06Those were the jeans.
46:07Yes, she did love an embellished jean.
46:09You have some daisies from a dress.
46:11This is going to mean so much to them.
46:14Donnie, I'm going to have to give you a big, quilty hug.
46:16That's amazing.
46:23As our final day draws to a close, there's still a lot of work ahead to turn this house into a home.
46:30It's going to be a very long night, but the doors are locked so no-one can leave until it's finished.
46:41Oh, my God.
46:53Hello.
46:55Hello.
46:56How are you?
46:56How are you?
46:57All right?
46:57Nice to see you all.
46:58How are you all feeling?
46:59So cute.
47:00Yeah.
47:00Shocked already.
47:02Already shocked just by the front of the house?
47:03Yes.
47:04It's literally gleaming.
47:06Yeah.
47:06Just eight days ago, the family of five were struggling to live in this cramped three-bedroom
47:14house. Samuel was sleeping in a poorly converted loft. Teenager Sadie was sharing a room with
47:22little brother Seth. Shay was sleeping in little more than a cupboard. And the staircase in the
47:28living room was a constant reminder of their mum's accident. And for Samuel, managing all the chores
47:34in a cramped kitchen had become a daily struggle. But everything has changed. This house is now
47:44a proper, functional family home. The new extension has created a large family area, connected to
47:52a bespoke kitchen designed to make daily life that bit easier. Samuel now has a proper bedroom
47:59on the ground floor. And a new hallway has been created, hiding the staircase so it's
48:04no longer a focal point. Upstairs, not only is there a new family bathroom, but for the
48:11first time ever, Sadie has her own bedroom and a place to relax. Shay has a much larger
48:18room with everything a young man needs to unwind. And Seth also has a new calming bedroom all
48:25his own. This build has thrown up so many challenges along the way. I just hope we've built a home
48:32that would make mum, Zoe, proud. So different but so recognisable still. Yeah. That's it? Oh my goodness.
48:44Oh my gosh. Yeah, a little bit different, right? A little bit. We've changed the banisters and the spindles and everything else so this looks different now.
48:54Yeah. And we've moved the living room so you're not staring at it all the time. Yeah. Love that.
49:00Yeah. Love that so much. We want this not to be the focal point. And now it's, yeah, it's just something that we can just pass by.
49:08Shall we go and have a look at the rest of the house? Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We need to go through this way. Let's have a look.
49:14Dork. Oh my gosh. No way. I love it so much. This is crazy. Obviously mum's painting. Yeah. Yeah. I sent a piece. Yeah.
49:29And have a look at the next bit. This is... Oh, mate. Oh my God. Beautiful.
49:36The dryer rack is sick. Oh my God. This is just... I'm going to elevate my house cleaning completely. I'm literally blown away by everything. It's crazy, right?
49:49Yeah. Why don't you go into the, er, safer area? Do you love it, sir? Is it fancy?
49:57Do you want to pick that up and pull that open? Oh, wait. Oh, don't. No way.
50:04What is it? It's almost closed. It's almost closed. Yeah. Oh my word.
50:14That is... Oh, man, that's so nice. This is the best thing. She used to wear this year all the time. A lot.
50:19We're literally going to be wrapped up with mum. Yeah. Literally wrapped up with her.
50:23This is so beautiful. It's so special with her heart. Look at her.
50:30But obviously, the main thing was trying to find somewhere for everybody to sleep as well. So, I'm going to start with you, Samuel.
50:39Come on, ready set. Good luck, Samuel. Thanks.
50:47Oh, mate.
50:51This is mad. Wow, look at that. Oh, no way. This is the best. This is the happiest I've ever been.
50:58And you wanted us to go travelling in South America, right? That is the goal, yeah.
51:02I want you to keep that dream alive, so we've got a picture up there of what you might go and see in South America.
51:08Thank you. Thank you so much.
51:10Make you deserve every bit of it.
51:12Oh, my God. This is sick. Oh, mate. This is so you, bro. This is so cool.
51:25One of your requests was a bearskin rug, but what we did was we got a bear picture.
51:29Don't worry, I'm happy with that. Yeah.
51:33You were literally in such a tiny room. Yeah, it was. You couldn't have two people in there at all, really, so...
51:38Yeah, big change, isn't it? Big change, yeah.
51:41Oh, my gosh. This is crazy. Oh, my gosh. It looks like an idiot.
51:51Oh, my gosh, I love it. I don't know what to say.
51:55It's literally just like... It's my own space. Yeah.
51:59This is Sethi's room, OK? OK. Good girl.
52:03Whoa. This is Sethi's bed. You're going to go straight in there.
52:08Just for Seth. Just for Seth.
52:10There's texture on the walls so that he can run his fingers along it. Good.
52:14And the blankets and pillows are different textures. What do you think? You like your room? Yeah.
52:20Is it good? Yeah.
52:22Outside, the large garden had become hard to manage and was a completely wasted space for a family of this size.
52:32But now it's been totally transformed into somewhere they can entertain and unwind.
52:38And for Summer, her very own beautifully furnished garden pod. A private retreat when she's home from medical school.
52:46So, let's step in.
52:48Hello.
52:49Nice.
52:50What the hell?
52:51What?
52:52Oh, my goodness.
52:53What the heck?
52:54This is beautiful.
52:55It's so gorgeous.
52:56There's six fruit trees planted, one for each of you and one for your mum.
53:02Oh.
53:03And they were planted by your family.
53:04Oh, that's so nice.
53:06Have a little wanderer.
53:07Wow.
53:08That's just magical, isn't it?
53:09Do you like the new garden?
53:10Yes!
53:11Step into your room.
53:12Oh, my gosh.
53:13Wow.
53:14It's like a little woodland lodge.
53:15Oh, my gosh.
53:16Got your own kitchen.
53:17Oh, my gosh.
53:18It's beautiful.
53:19So gorgeous.
53:20It's pink and golden.
53:21It's like when you're going away on holiday, and you're just in your own house.
53:42The question is, do you think your mum would have liked it?
53:44I think that's the other question.
53:45It's guaranteed, yeah.
53:46I think mum shines through the house.
53:49house this transformation was only possible because of the incredible army of volunteers
53:56who came to help are you ready to meet all the boys and girls that actually built this for you
54:19these are all the lovely people that built your house i was so worried going into this that um
54:45the essence of mum would be lost from the house i've since realized that like the house has been
54:50built with so much love and kindness that actually everything mum embodied runs through the core of
54:56the house now the last thing i ever said to her was that i'd look after the kids and so you guys
55:04has really helped me keep that promise you haven't just built us a home you've built us a future so
55:10thank you thank you so much like it's gonna make all our lives so much easier and mother's shining
55:23down on the house right now she's beaming thank you guys um it's really good good do they still look
55:32like minions sadie yeah slightly hard working minions yeah you did an amazing job i don't quite
55:44have the words to convey the gratitude that i have for every single person here but what i can say is
55:51that we will give our thanks by thriving off of the opportunity that you all have bestowed upon us
55:59so from the bottom of my heart genuinely thank you for changing our lives
56:20that speech got me it's from my heart man it's from my heart
56:24yeah make no mistake a tragedy like losing their mum when they were all so young could very easily
56:33have shattered this family but that's not what happened here this family found strength in each
56:40other and bonded together tighter than ever before thank you so much i don't think there's any doubt now
56:48they have an extra 450 family members because of this lot pouring their heart and soul into the build
56:54i hope they feel the love much bigger family now
