This episode picks up immediately after the devastating events of Episode 1. The Colossal Titan has destroyed the outer gate of Wall Maria, allowing smaller Titans to pour into the Shiganshina District. Chaos erupts as citizens try to flee for their lives.
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin witness the horror firsthand as soldiers struggle in vain to fight back. In a moment of despair, Eren’s mother, Carla Yeager, is trapped beneath the rubble of their home. Eren and Mikasa try desperately to save her, but Hannes, a soldier from the Garrison Regiment, intervenes. He initially tries to fight the Titan but is overcome with fear and instead takes the children to safety, leaving Carla behind. Eren watches helplessly as a Titan lifts his mother and devours her — a traumatic event that ignites his hatred for Titans.
The survivors retreat behind Wall Rose, abandoning the territory inside Wall Maria. The government announces that humanity has lost a significant portion of its land and population, forcing the refugees into crowded, desperate conditions.
By the episode’s end, Eren’s grief and anger harden into determination. He vows to kill every last Titan and reclaim the world for humanity — setting the stage for his journey as a soldier and future Titan Slayer.
