00:00The family were driving in a hatchback at about 8.30 last night in Wonturner South,
00:07which is about 25 kilometres east of Melbourne.
00:10Now, they've failed to give way at an intersection,
00:13and that's when they've collided with a sedan through that intersection.
00:17Now, inside the car was an 11-year-old girl.
00:20She was critically injured in that incident and rushed off to hospital.
00:24Her younger brother, a four-year-old boy, was also seriously hurt and also hospitalised.
00:29Now, overnight, the condition of the girl has improved slightly.
00:33She's now in a serious condition, while her brother as well has also improved.
00:37He's now stable.
00:39Both the parents, who were 38 years old, suffered minor injuries in that crash,
00:45and the two young men who were in the other car, the sedan, they were 18-year-old men.
00:50They stopped at the scene to help, and they weren't hurt themselves either.
00:54Police at the scene have described that incident last night as awful for everybody.
01:01This collision is an absolutely timely reminder that a moment's inattention
01:05and not paying proper appreciation of approaching vehicles,
01:10as well as we're going to be looking at whether the children were properly restrained.
01:14We'll look at that in this collision, but also even on short trips.
01:18Please make sure your children are properly restrained,
01:21in appropriate restraints in the back seat.
01:23Now, while we do know that car failed to give way at an intersection,
01:27police don't know exactly why that was the case.
01:30So while they look at this crash today,
01:33they'll dig further into why that was the case.
