00:00At Liverpool Town Hall, a public inquiry has been hearing evidence about the warning signs leading up to the Southport attack.
00:08John Hodson, who leads Acorn School in Ormskirk, said she had a visceral sense of dread about former pupil Axel Rudakabana.
00:16She told the inquiry she was concerned by his growing agitation, direct challenges to staff and lack of respect for others.
00:22Rudakabana, then aged 17, had already been excluded from Range High School in Formby after admitting to taking knives into school.
00:30In October 2019, two months later, he returned and attacked another student with a hockey stick while another knife was found in his bag.
00:39Ms Hodson recalled that when she first met him and asked why he'd brought a knife into school, he replied simply to use it.
00:46She described him as the most unusual pupil she'd ever encountered, someone with no respect for authority, convinced his views were always right and showing no accountability for his actions.
00:58Staff at the Acorn School made three referrals to the government's prevent programme, worried that he might attack others or be vulnerable to radicalisation.
01:09But Ms Hodson said those concerns were not acted upon and the experience damaged the school's relationship with Rudakabana's family.
01:17She told the inquiry that while she regretted not making a further prevent referral later on, staff had lost faith that anything would be done.
01:25In her statement, Ms Hodson said she believed Rudakabana's father may have been fearful of his son and that by early 2021, control at home had broken down.
01:36The inquiry continues to hear evidence from schools and agencies involved in Rudakabana's education and care.
