Wimmera farmers rejoice at late season rainfall

Kaniva sheep and cropping farmer John Hicks received around 20mm of rain this week which he said will be a huge help to finish off the growing season. Video by Petra Oates.

00:00John O'Hicks here from Hannerton, just in Canavera in the West Rimmer.

00:05We were lucky enough to have 19 to 20 wheels this week in a rainfall event.

00:10It's sort of a bit later than we would have liked, but everything's finished flowering,

00:13but it will really help with grain fill, what's there.

00:16Heads and canola and wheat and stuff will finish off really nicely.

00:19Lentil growers, I think, will be really happy with this one coming through.

00:22So it's fantastic to get some rain a bit later than we would have liked,

00:25but it'll really help when things are looking pretty ordinary before this one

00:28or things were drying out. This one will be a nice handy one,

00:31so we won't knock it back.

00:32Yeah, we had a tough late start last year and similar again this year, really dry.

00:36We had some early rain here and a bit of a storm, sort of Anzac daytime,

00:39but then really didn't get started until May.

00:41I think sheep-wise we've grown a bit more feed through the winter this year

00:44than we did last year, but two very similar seasons.

00:47Pretty much all our rainfall has been growing season.

00:49Last year we were fortunate. We had a really wet summer the year before.

00:52We had a lot of soared moisture, whereas this year all that moisture wasn't there.

00:55We were really hanging on from rain to rain with small rainfall events.

00:58But yeah, for the amount of rain we've had for the growing season,

01:00we're very, very lucky the way crops and things are looking.

01:03So fingers crossed here for a soft finish and a happy harvest.
