London raking in staggering £1billion a year from drivers in road charges and fines

00:00According to new figures, motorists are paying more than £1 billion a year in road charges and
00:04fines incurred while driving in London. Nine of the ten councils generating the biggest profits
00:09in England are in the capital, with Westminster being the biggest earner, declaring a net income
00:14of £90.6 million. The new government data offers one of the most detailed insights available on
00:21the added costs of driving in the capital. The 33 boroughs received a total of £1,065 million
00:27in income from parking fees and penalty charges in 2024-2025, almost half of the amount paid
00:34across the entire country. After costs were deducted, the boroughs made a profit of £638
00:40million, which they are required to reinvest in transport schemes such as road repairs.
00:46AA's head of roads policy Jack Cousins said income from parking charges and penalty tickets
00:50has soared due to unrestrained costs and fines.
