00:00I treat my body like a temple. Yeah, open to everyone, day or night.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for TV shows that proved their cultural staying power,
00:11resurging in popularity and gaining new fans, long after their final episodes aired.
00:17Clever things make people feel stupid, and unexpected things make them feel scared.
00:23Number 10. Gilmore Girls.
00:25One of those moments when everything is so perfect and so wonderful that you almost feel sad because nothing can ever be this good again.
00:34This cozy small-town comedy-drama from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino ended in 2007,
00:40but its life as a cultural phenomenon is far from over.
00:44Something about the show's pre-iPhone camaraderie and low-stakes plotlines keep people coming back year after year.
00:51School? Huh? School? You have school?
00:53Uh, yes, I have school, but is there any way you could reschedule school just for today?
00:58Like a warm blanket and a cup of tea, Gilmore Girls is a familiar comfort during the colder months.
01:04Streaming data for this series spikes from October through January,
01:08when Gilmore Girls fans return to Star's Hollow for their annual rewatch.
01:13Dean!
01:13What?
01:14Stop!
01:14Why?
01:17Because I love you, you idiot!
01:19Given the show's enduring popularity on streaming services, it's pretty safe to say the Gilmore Girls are here to stay.
01:26Number 9. Firefly.
01:28The Lions said they were going to waltz through Serenity Valley, and we choked them with those words.
01:32We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.
01:35What do you get when you have a groundbreaking sci-fi space western, with brilliant political commentary, extensive world-building, and Nathan Fillion?
01:45A premature cancellation, apparently.
01:47Joss Whedon's Firefly lasted for just one brief season, doomed by an unforgiving time slot and weak promotion.
01:55Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
02:03Despite the show's low ratings while airing, Firefly became a sleeper hit when it was released on DVD.
02:09Sci-fi fanatic saw the potential in Whedon's gritty futuristic world and spread the word about his now-beloved series.
02:16The endearing characters and just the love of all things Whedon, I think, has kept this show going.
02:24Eventually, its cult status led to a feature film, Serenity, to continue the short-lived story.
02:30With the advent of streaming, Firefly has been able to reach even more people.
02:35Don't you ever stand for that sort of thing. Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill them right back.
02:39Number 8. The Nanny.
02:41There is nothing these kids can throw at me that I haven't seen before, except maybe their trust funds.
02:47This CBS sitcom about the cultural clash between a working-class Queen's native and the privileged Manhattanite's Sheen Nanny's is full of laughter, heart, and killer outfits.
02:58Though the show was a success upon release and well-received by critics, it soon became overshadowed by bigger hits like Friends and Seinfeld.
03:07I like it.
03:11I wonder how long it's going to last.
03:14In 2021, The Nanny was made available to stream on HBO Max.
03:19Viewers tuned in to find the show's sharp writing and campy humor held up surprisingly well,
03:24and the familiarity of the sitcom world felt comforting during the stress of the pandemic.
03:29Thanks to streaming, younger generations can continue to appreciate what comedic legend and fashion icon Fran Drescher is.
03:50Number 7. Veronica Mars.
03:52After all these years, do you not instinctively fear me?
03:56Maybe you should write yourself a note.
03:58Early 2000s TV shows didn't always have the best role models for teenage girls, but Veronica Mars was one exception.
04:06Kristen Bell plays Veronica, a teen detective, who's as brilliant as she is chic.
04:11She's known for her sharp wit, but also her incredible strength as a survivor of sexual assault.
04:17I'm going to find out who did this to me and I'm going to make them pay, even if it was you.
04:22Though not as popular as shows like One Tree Hill and The O.C., Veronica Mars continued to grow in popularity through word of mouth after the series was cancelled.
04:31Continued fan support for the series eventually resulted in a Kickstarter-funded film in 2014 and a one-season revival in 2019.
04:40This series was truly ahead of its time.
04:43No one cares what you think, Veronica Mars.
04:46Not anymore.
04:47Not since you stabbed all your friends in the back.
04:49You seem to care a bit what I think.
04:51Number 6. Freaks and Geeks.
04:53Are you okay?
04:55This is just me or the whole world sucks.
04:57Upon initial airing, this show was a charming period piece about the awkwardness of adolescence and the existential dilemmas that arise when outgrowing childhood.
05:07It was cancelled after just one season, despite rave reviews from critics.
05:12She's not evil, Mom.
05:13She's just different.
05:15She doesn't wear frilly dresses or prance around like a cheerleader.
05:19Just because a girl speaks her mind doesn't mean she's a psycho.
05:22In the years since, Freaks and Geeks has grown a massive fan base, largely due to the success of many of its young stars.
05:29Actors like James Franco, Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini and Jason Segel all got their starts on this show.
05:36What do people do when they're not stoned?
05:41Well, no.
05:44Relate to one another?
05:46I don't want to relate to anybody.
05:48The series went from featuring an ensemble of nobodies to a star-studded cast.
05:53Canceling Freaks and Geeks is a decision that might still keep NBC execs up at night.
05:59Number 5. Star Trek.
06:00You know the greatest danger facing us is ourselves and a rational fear of the unknown.
06:06But there's no such thing as the unknown.
06:07Only things temporarily hidden, temporarily not understood.
06:10One of the most successful science fiction franchises of all time nearly came to an end just three years into its existence.
06:18As ratings continued to fall, there were frequent rumors that NBC would cancel the series.
06:23A med-man got us into this, and it's beginning to look as if only a med-man can get us out.
06:29Thanks to a letter-writing campaign from Star Trek fans, the series managed to survive long enough to earn syndication, after being cancelled.
06:37Throughout the 1970s, Star Trek reruns kept viewership alive and allowed the fandom to thrive.
06:43As demand for the series grew, network execs had no choice but to give the people what they wanted.
06:48It was your choice.
06:51It was the only choice possible.
06:54You would not respect any other.
06:57Thanks to the unwavering commitment of science fiction's most loyal fanbase, Star Trek has been able to live long and prosper.
07:05Number 4. Futurama.
07:06My parents. My co-workers. My girlfriend. I'll never see any of them again.
07:14Yahoo!
07:15Created by Matt Groening, Futurama is like The Simpsons' quirky, offbeat younger cousin.
07:22The appeal of Fry's adventures in the distant future was a mystery to Fox execs, who dropped the show after four seasons.
07:29Yes, I'm afraid the brainless drones who run the network cancelled our license.
07:35We were cancelled?
07:36Interest in the series rose again as it gained popularity with reruns on Adult Swim.
07:41Comedy Central then decided to pick up Futurama for a revival.
07:46Once the run ended in 2013 with Season 7, fans still weren't done with the series.
07:51What do you say?
07:53Want to go around again?
07:55I do.
07:56Ten years later, Hulu stepped in for yet another revival.
08:02This show has had so many near-death experiences that there have been four potential series finales in its lifetime.
08:10Thankfully, they didn't seem to stick.
08:12To keep him from running out, we'll need to produce an hour-long episode every hour, non-stop, forever!
08:19If Law & Order can do it, so can you!
08:22Professor out!
08:24Number 3.
08:25Suits
08:25First impressions last.
08:27You start behind the eight ball, you'll never get in front.
08:30During its initial run, this legal drama was quite successful, popular enough to last nine seasons and over 100 episodes.
08:38Even if you didn't watch Suits, you likely heard about it when one of its stars left to become literal British royalty.
08:45With a recognizable name and now extremely high-profile star, Suits enjoyed a second wave of popularity when it was made available to stream on Netflix in 2023.
08:55We are becoming Edward.
08:58I know.
09:00And we need to get back to being us.
09:02This also coincided with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA writer's strike when viewers were short on new scripted shows to watch.
09:11Suits dropped at the perfect time to attract new fans, paving the way for a spin-off series, Suits L.A.
09:18Oh, you think I couldn't take you?
09:19There's only one Batman.
09:20I know, you just bought him a drink.
09:22I know.
09:22I bought myself a drink and I'm Batman.
09:25You can be Robin.
09:26Number 2.
09:27The Golden Girls
09:28Nobody ever believes me when I'm telling the truth.
09:30I guess it's the curse of being a devastatingly beautiful woman.
09:34This sitcom starring four timelessly glamorous women living together in Miami was widely acclaimed by critics and viewers alike during its original seven-year run.
09:44The show challenged stereotypes by featuring older women as active and complex protagonists, and it tackled important social issues that are still relevant today.
09:53Remember what your cousin Federico used to say?
09:56People waste their time pondering whether a glass is half empty or half full.
10:00Me, I just drink whatever's in the glass.
10:02In the decades since the series finale, The Golden Girls has proven to resonate with new generations, becoming a hit on streaming.
10:09Its popularity surged following the passing of one of its beloved stars, Betty White, in 2022.
10:15Everybody has been so wonderfully kind to me for all these hundreds of years, and I love you and thank you.
10:27Fans, new and old, celebrated what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday by watching her iconic performance as Rose Nyland, cementing the legacy of Golden Girls well into the 21st century.
10:39Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
10:43Murder, she wrote.
10:44Thrifty viewers found this classic series streaming free on Tubi, and found it still holds up.
10:51A mysterious murder, and your first question is...
10:54How are your beats doing in this weather?
10:57Lieutenant Alvin Terwilliger, this is Meredith Peckham.
11:00Hello.
11:01Hello.
11:01Al and I are both gardeners, and we compete in a friendly sort of way.
11:06Pen 15.
11:07This brutally honest comedy remains relatable for viewers young and old.
11:12Did you not see the smoke that came out of my mouth?
11:15I'm a freaking dragon.
11:17Go again.
11:19Maya, stop.
11:21It almost died.
11:21It won't touch you.
11:22I have a magic shield covering your face.
11:25Arrested Development.
11:26Low ratings forced Fox to cancel the show, but Netflix gave it a new life.
11:31When's the last time you went on a date?
11:33I just haven't met anybody who's not completely self-absorbed and impossible to have a conversation with.
11:37If that's a veiled criticism about me, I won't hear it, and I won't respond to it.
11:43Hmm.
11:44Maybe I'm wrong.

12:01Number 1.
12:02Friends.
12:02You know, boyfriends and girlfriends are going to come and go, but this is for life.
12:07The stories of six 20-somethings living in New York City captivated television viewers throughout the 90s,
12:14and they wouldn't be forgotten after the series ended.
12:17Welcome to the real world.
12:19It sucks.
12:20You're going to love it.
12:22With the full series available to stream on various platforms around the world,
12:26new generations have discovered the magic of Friends.
12:29Despite how much our world has changed with the internet and social media,
12:33today's teens still find the stories of Friends resonate with their own lives.
12:37I thought it'd be great.
12:39I figured I'd have, like, time alone with my thoughts, but, you know, turns out I don't have as many thoughts as you'd think.
12:46The show also received a significant bump in streaming popularity following the news of Matthew Perry's tragic passing in 2023.
12:53After Matthew died, I could start watching the show again because it wasn't about me.
12:58It had to do with him for some reason.
13:03And so I have started watching Friends.
13:06The world may change, but Friendship is truly timeless.
13:09Which show did you discover years after it ended?
