00:00Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, along with Northumberland County Council's Trade and Standards Team,
00:06is warning people to watch out for fire and safety hazards this Halloween, linked to costumes, decorations and open flames.
00:14Station Manager Kerry Shotton says crews respond to incidents every year caused by flammable costumes, candles and unsafe decorations.
00:22She's also reminding children to remember the stop, drop and roll technique if clothing ever catches fire, a simple action that can prevent serious injuries.
00:34Councilor Gordon Stewart, Cabinet Member for Public Safety and Fire Authority Chair, says safety is the top priority during busy celebrations like Halloween.
00:43He adds that the fire and rescue service and trade and standards work year round to make sure products on sale meet the right standards.
00:50And that small precautions can make a big difference in preventing accidents.
00:55Their advice is to choose the flame resistant costumes and opt for LED lights instead of candles.
01:01They say it's important to always check for CE or UKCA markings to ensure products meet UK safety laws.
01:08Families are also being urged to buy from trusted suppliers, as cheap imports from outside the UK or Europe may not meet required safety standards.
01:16They also ask parents to supervise children while trick-or-treating, avoid trailing cords or loose fabrics that could catch fire, and make sure button batteries in toys or decorations are properly secured to prevent children from swallowing them.
01:31It's also important to remove drawstrings from costumes that could pose a strangulation risk.
01:35The message from safety officials is clear.
01:38With just a few extra checks and simple swaps, families can enjoy a fun and fright-free Halloween this year.
