00:00Look at this old video from a luxury wedding in Tehran, Iran.
00:08Chandeliers, applause and a bride in a strapless gown walking in with her father.
00:13No headscarves in sight, no sign of modesty rules that govern most Iranian women's lives.
00:18The clip looks ordinary until you realize who the man beside her is.
00:22That's Ali Shamkhani, a long-time ally of Supreme Leader al-Khamenei
00:26and one of Iran's most powerful military figures.
00:29He served as the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2013 to 2023,
00:35the body that oversees Iran's national security and internal enforcement.
00:40Shamkhani is known as an enforcer of Iran's strict hijab and public morality policies,
00:45the same rules that punish women for showing their hair in public.
00:48The SNSC he once led played a central role in suppressing dissent,
00:52including the 2022 anti-hijab protests that erupted after the death of Masa Amini.
00:58Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died in police custody after being detained in Tehran for allegedly violating hijab laws.
01:08Her death sparked months of protests across the country, one of the biggest uprisings Iran had seen in decades.
01:14The crackdown that followed was brutal.
01:16According to Human Rights Watch, more than 500 people, including 68 children were killed.
01:21Thousands were arrested as the state moved to silence the movement demanding woman life freedom.
01:26So when this old wedding footage resurfaced showing the daughter of a hijab enforcer in a strapless dress,
01:32the backlash was immediate.
01:34Many Iranians saw it as a proof of double standards, that those who impose the rules don't live by them.
01:39The timing added fuel to the anger.
01:45Iran is reportedly preparing to deploy 80,000 morality police officers to tighten enforcement of dress codes for women,
01:52while the families or the powerful appear untouched by those same laws.
