Angara seeks reform in system of constructing classrooms to address backlog
Education Secretary Sonny Angara underscores the need to reform the current system in classroom construction to address the long-standing backlog in schools. This, after only 22 classrooms were built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) out of the 1,700 targeted for completion this year. Speaking to reporters in Malacañang on Oct. 21, 2025, Angara said this was regrettable, considering the urgent need for classrooms around the country pegged at over 150,000. In an interview on the sidelines of the awarding of Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos. Angara said they planned to meet the 40,000 target of classrooms built by the end of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term in 2028. To date, the Department of Education has reported 146,708 classroom backlogs nationwide, while the DepEd and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have completed 22,092 classrooms from July 2022 to July 2025.
