00:00In Iceland, we have been focusing on different types of grain for a while, and oats were an orphan crop in Iceland, so completely neglected.
00:22So I had this idea to start a network of scientists and breeders in the Nordic countries.
00:28We all came here to Iceland, and we sat down and talked about oats for three days, and then this idea was born.
00:36The first step is to identify the best lines, so we can recommend it to farmers right away.
00:41Second step is to recognize the best parents for crossing to make even better offspring.
00:48And the third thing we can do is we can find genome associations to these traits that show adaptation to the extreme environment.
00:58And that gives a segue into gene editing or further breeding or genomic selection.
01:05Then we present the product to the farmers who say, this you can grow.
01:11From there on, they can start discussing on how much they want to grow, about processing oats, about making products.
01:18This could be cookies, this could be oatmeal.
01:21It can be a wide range of products which are vitally important for especially island communities like Iceland.
