00:06His mission? To shore up a ceasefire in the Gaza War.
00:09The return of peace after two years of fighting in Gaza
00:11is a project U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed hard for.
00:17But an October 10th ceasefire has fallen apart more than once,
00:21with both sides accusing the other of violations.
00:24Gazan officials say at least 97 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire took effect.
00:29Flare-up Sunday saw two Israeli soldiers and 28 people in Gaza killed.
00:34Some Gazans who've lost relatives say they have no faith in the truce.
00:42It is all lies. There is none of it.
00:45This is the ceasefire, as you can see.
00:48There are some people under the rubble.
00:50Those we could bring out are here, but others are still under the rubble.
00:54We are defenseless people.
01:00They said there was a truce, that we were included in it,
01:02that this was a safe space, and there is a truce.
01:06But this enemy has no commitment.
01:08This army, you cannot hold it to anything.
01:10One issue is the so-called Yellow Line, beyond which Israeli forces have withdrawn.
01:18Gazans say, with just a few physical markers only now being put in place,
01:22it's hard to tell just by looking on a map where the line actually is.
01:26But Israel says there have been Palestinian attempts to breach it.
01:30Still, none of this has stopped efforts, especially from the U.S.,
01:33to keep the ceasefire on track.
01:35Vance is slated to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
01:39as part of the U.S.'s diplomatic efforts.
01:44We'll discuss two issues, mainly two issues,
01:47about the security challenges we are facing
01:49and about the political opportunities we are facing.
01:52We'll overcome the challenges and we'll realize the opportunities.
01:58And on the ground, there are signs of progress towards peace.
02:02On Monday night, Israel retrieved the body said to be of one of the hostages Hamas took in 2023.
02:09Israel says that leaves 15 dead hostages in Gaza, 13 Israeli, and 2 foreign.
02:15In Gaza, aid trucks sent to ease the humanitarian disaster of the past two years
02:19began to flow in once more on Monday,
02:22after the flare-ups of violence led Israel to block them.
02:25It may not be enough to stop the suffering in Gaza,
02:27but the UN is pleased there's at least some help on the way.
02:32Over the weekend, we and our partners continued to collect aid
02:36from the Karim Shalom-Kesufim crossings.
02:39This included postpartum hygiene kits, medical supplies, fuel, food, and water.
02:44Even with peace apparently back,
02:46there are questions about how far Trump's plan will get off the ground.
02:49This is just stage one.
02:52Trump's ultimate goal is to disarm Hamas
02:54and turn Gaza over to an international force.
02:57Hamas, though, is resisting disarmament
02:59and rejecting any foreign administration in Gaza.
03:02Trump says he isn't going to give Hamas a choice.
03:06We made a deal with Hamas that, you know,
03:08they're going to be very good, they're going to behave,
03:10they're going to be nice,
03:11and if they're not, we're going to go in,
03:13we're going to eradicate them if we have to.
03:15They'll be eradicated, and they know that.
03:18He says U.S. troops wouldn't be on the ground,
03:21but he says Israel would, quote,
03:22go in in two minutes if he asked.
03:24It's barely two weeks since the ceasefire took effect,
03:28and peace in Gaza is far from guaranteed.
