JB Gill defends Strictly Come Dancing competitors with dance experience

JB Gill - who took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2024 – doesn’t believe the Strictly contestants with dance experience have an advantage over their other competitors.

00:00To take on a new dance routine and dance style that you've perhaps never danced before,

00:30and learn it in a week and then go and perform it live on national television.

00:34That takes some doing.

00:35So everyone's doing an incredible job, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

00:39What do you think, like some of the dancers on here that have trained experience,

00:42also by Lewis and I, and David and my others, do you think that really matters?

00:46I should say they're not trained in Latin and all.

00:48Well, that's the thing.

00:49I think because they're not trained in Latin and all, it possibly might help from a performance perspective.

00:54If people are used to performing, then of course that will help,

00:57because there's an element of stage presence and performance that's needed in every routine.

01:01I think that's why a lot of the actors do well, because although they're not trained in dance,

01:06the fact that they're able to bring characterization to what they do really, really helps.

01:10So I don't think it gives them any more advantage than anybody else.

01:13If someone's a great actor, even if they've never danced,

01:15they're able to bring that element to what they do and what they put out on a Saturday night.

01:19So I think at the end of the day, we all have our strengths, we have our weaknesses,

01:21and ultimately you're learning from scratch every single week.

01:26For most people, even if they've done one style before and been involved in maybe the Christmas special or something,

01:31you know, there are so many different styles to pick up and learn.

01:34They all have their different traits.

01:36They're all difficult to learn in a week.

01:38You know, you've got to think these pros have been doing it for years on end in order to be professional.

01:43So, you know, to expect professional performances from someone who's done it for a week is, you know, crazy.

01:48Yeah, but, you know, everyone goes out there, everyone gives their all.

01:51And ultimately, you want to see good dancing.

01:53So, you know, if someone's got a good background in dancing and performing, great, brilliant.
