00:00MUSIC
00:13Welcome to the show and welcome to The Last Dinner Party!
00:30MUSIC
00:46I'd never been so scorned to find your kindness
00:50Didn't last beyond a fry you've bent my spit upon your sheets
00:55And if I'd asked for how you'd answered I'd have gonna see my father down at Brompton 17
01:04I hope your back is healing from that good old flame
01:10And your good's still staying with me
01:14Wear it with my pride, been to the little pill
01:19God knows I left it by mistake
01:23God knows I left it by mistake
01:28Good morning, good looking
01:32This is the killer speaking
01:36Good morning, handsome
01:40This is the killer
01:42Hold on.
02:12And I'm down so bad.
02:21I'm doing time.
02:23You look like a weeping saint with your infected eye.
02:28I'm doing time.
02:30And I'm down so bad.
02:32Hope I don't open the door now.
02:34I'm here and drop you.
02:41Oh, baby.
02:43I'm here I'm here.
02:49I'm here I'm here.
02:54I'm here I'm here I'm here.
03:00Ah, ah, ah, ah, it goes a club, it goes a club
03:06Ah, ah, ah, ah, it goes yo, yo
03:12Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, here comes your girl
03:42Love them, thank you, wonderful, the last dinner party
03:52Superb line-up tonight, let's hear it, because from Los Angeles via Rhode Island we have Tyler Ballgame
04:01From Puerto Rico, Princess Nokia
04:07From London, Celeste
04:11But now, from Northridge, Cheshire, it's The Charlatans
04:18Thank you
04:24We know
04:26We know
04:50We know
04:52We know where we're going, oh, we're lost now
04:58Choices that we're facing, half a castle man
05:04Looking for the truth in all this darkness, it shines on us
05:13At the present, while unavailable, my glass of empty, yours are full
05:24You got me acting, irrational, this is the place, these are the days, we holler
05:39Not sure what fits, the language is a gift that we can heal the rift
05:47Accepting all we are now try to spot the grift, and take the path we're seeking, look for what we missed, raise your fist
06:24It's achievable
06:32But impossible
06:35Days will never be done
06:39Feeling exceptional
06:44This is the place
06:48These are the days
06:51We are loved
06:59We are loved
07:05We are loved
07:11Ever pleasant
07:13While unavailable
07:17My glasses are bending
07:19I'm empty
07:21You're so powerful
07:23You got me acting
07:27Irrational
07:29My glass of empty
07:33You're so powerful
07:37This is the place
07:39These are the days
07:43We are loved
07:49We are loved
07:51Yeah, we are loved
07:55We are loved
08:13We are loved
08:15Title track from their new album
08:17The charlatans
08:21Now I think it's time for the piano side chats with Abigail Morris and Emily Roberts from The Last Dinner Party
08:27Welcome to the show
08:29It's fantastic to have you here
08:31Thank you so much for coming
08:33Hi
08:35From strength to strength
08:37You came on last time, it was great, it's even better now
08:39And you have had enormous success
08:41Because you've had Brits, number one album
08:43All of these things have happened
08:45Is the whirlwind success
08:47Is it how you imagined it was going to be?
08:49It kind of feels like a montage from a film
08:51So yeah, a bit, yeah, I guess
08:53What sort of a film would it be?
08:55Oh no, Almost Famous
08:57Oh yeah
08:59Is it right that you started off with writing out a manifesto for your future band, what you wanted to have?
09:05Yes, that is true
09:07And what did you put on it?
09:09What did we put? Schemes
09:11There was colour palettes
09:13That was a big focus, we knew how we wanted to dress
09:15And the kind of visual world we wanted to create and sort of references
09:19From film and ballet and theatre
09:21And the kind of sound we wanted
09:23And I think also the kind of feeling we wanted people to take away from seeing us live
09:27Of feeling like you've been kind of at a dinner party with your friends
09:31And that kind of excitement
09:33Your set before, because you did have all candelabras and things before
09:37You haven't got those now
09:39No, not today
09:41We're into minimalism
09:43No we're not
09:45Now your latest album has a great sleeve
09:47All dancing round a bonfire pressed in red
09:49Very medieval looking
09:51Anything that particularly inspired that cover?
09:53Yeah, I mean we were really drawn to kind of like that medieval sort of
09:57Hieronymus boss kind of tableau
09:59And there's a film by Ingmar Bergman called The Seventh Seal
10:03And there's a scene where the characters are kind of walking across a hill
10:07In formation kind of dancing like that
10:09And that was quite a big inspiration
10:11One of my favourite films
10:13There you go
10:14And death plays
10:15Chess
10:16Chess with the knight
10:17Yeah great, what a treat
10:18Now I believe there was a David Barry exhibition
10:20And David Barry, no you went and helped curate some of the exhibition
10:24What did you do there?
10:25We co-curated with Niall Rogers which was really cool
10:29And when we got asked to do it we were like absolutely yes we'll do it
10:33Because David Bow is like a common influence between the five of us
10:37And it's been an influence for like both albums
10:40So yeah and you picked out some really cool things from the archives
10:43Some handwritten lyrics
10:44Oh wow
10:45Well because it's more than an exhibition
10:47It's a permanent archive that they've got in this V&A East in the storehouse
10:51And instead of just kind of going and looking at things behind glass
10:54You can book an appointment and then go
10:56And go through his archive kind of on your own with you know under supervision
10:59So you don't get it all greasy
11:01But I think it's a really amazing resource to have
11:03Oh great
11:04Yeah
11:05Did you pick particular things that sort of put on show?
11:07Yeah we gravitated more towards the kind of like physical handwritten stuff
11:11That he'd done because I think it's so important
11:13To be able to see the process behind finished products
11:16To be able to kind of see into the mind of a creative at any time
11:19And see the kind of little doubts and sparks of inspiration
11:22And I think it's so interesting
11:24There's some lyrics with bits crossed out
11:25Yeah
11:26And like there's like stains little drawings of things
11:29Yeah
11:30So you're going to be performing the scythe next
11:33Tell us about that
11:34Like a scythe
11:35You're holding a scythe aren't you
11:37Like sort of the grim reaper
11:38Well it's about how relationships ending are like death
11:41And it's about grief
11:42And grief of real death
11:44Grief of death of relationships
11:45Things coming to an end
11:47That kind of you know pain
11:48Well it's really great
11:49Honestly the band sound better and better
11:51We look forward to hearing you at the end of the show
11:53Thank you for joining us very much
11:55Thank you for having us

21:55Now, a change of atmosphere,
21:58performing on British television for the first time,
22:01our next guest has just released her seventh album, Girls.
22:04With a mash-up of two songs from that,
22:06please welcome Princess Nokia.
22:17Girlhood is a spectrum
22:19Pretty is destruction
22:20I just fell from grace
22:21Then I made it into something

22:24Then I caught my cousins

22:27Timber in my button
22:28Tatted frilly dresses
22:30Bloody covered knuckles
22:31Rotting from my inside

24:52I'm the older woman
24:53Unmarried and undecided
24:55I got it
24:56And I don't want kids

26:02Hell Medusa make a grown man cry
26:04Hell Medusa kiss of death on her lips
26:07Catch the Holy Spirit rebuke their bed dick
26:50The last time I ever felt like this
26:53I always thought I had no pure bliss
26:58Even though I had a perfect kiss
27:11Reading your lips is like a film with a twist
27:16And I'm here
27:28They say there's nothing in their feelings
27:34Deeper and deeper
27:38I don't feel like coming up for it
27:45Right now
27:46Not while I got my head in the clouds
27:52I couldn't help but get interested
28:01After seeing that thing you did
28:07Bounce water under the bridge
28:12Deeper and deeper
28:19I don't feel like coming up for it
28:26Right now
28:28Not while I got my head in the clouds
28:33Steeper and steeper
28:38This cloud of mine did beat me
28:43Yeah
28:44No safety net
28:47It seems to be a long way down
28:53When push comes to shove
28:55It's only ever about the ones we love
28:58Ah
29:00When good from above
29:04Had to realize we were hand in glove
29:07Ah
29:09No matter where you are
29:14They'll always be a fire inside my heart
29:18Ah
29:19Don't see
29:28They'll be playing a song on the roof
29:30It doesn't seem to be playing a song on the roof
29:32Don't see
29:33They've been playing a song on the roof
29:39Deeper and deeper
29:42I don't feel like coming, I'm flying just now
29:52Not while I got my head in the clouds
29:58I was feeling weaker, but we are gifted and supreme
30:08And I just went back then, everything became clear to me
30:16Thank you to Charlatans with Deeper and Deeper from their new album We Are Love
30:38And now at the piano I'm so thrilled and delighted to welcome my dear friend Celeste
30:48Very nice to see you
30:50So pleased to have you back on the show
30:54And you've got this wonderful album about to come out, coming out in November
31:00Woman of Faces, where does that title come from?
31:04Actually it's quite an unusual and I suppose quite an interesting story
31:08In that actually a lady who goes by the name Kiddo
31:12Because she's a writer and an artist herself
31:14She met somebody who I've worked with for many years
31:17And she said, I just have the feeling that I need to give this title to Celeste
31:22And she said the title is Woman of Faces
31:25And I knew in the time that I was working on my album
31:29I was waiting for a title
31:31And I knew what it needed to feel like and what it needed to explain
31:35And when I heard that I knew this is the title
31:38And I suppose it kind of just came to me in that way
31:41So did you meet when she gave it to you or did she was just in the post anonymously?
31:44By a pigeon
31:46Eventually we met and we didn't actually write the song together
31:49I ended up writing the song with a friend of mine in London called Matt Maltese
31:54And we did it in 2023 actually
31:57And we went to an old rehearsal space
31:59Because I just started to feel like being in studios was kind of clouding my judgement
32:05And the way I wanted to write, I wanted to write really freely
32:08And without the sense that you have to walk away with something that day
32:12So I went to this rehearsal space and we just had our laptop and a microphone
32:17And did it like that
32:18The song earlier sounded fantastic
32:20Oh thank you
32:21Seth's a great piano player
32:22Yes
32:23And when you were growing up, what were some of the things you were listening to?
32:26When I was growing up, it's hard to remember now
32:30Well, the first thing as I heard were Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald
32:36But then also I remember my mum playing The Clash
32:39And playing like some of the dance music from the 80s
32:42With like some of those soul vocalists
32:45That were then on kind of house music and stuff
32:47So it was always those kind of big soul voices that I was hearing
32:51And always kind of attracted to and drawn to
32:55And also people that just had like a way of expressing themselves
32:59That was not holding back, I suppose
33:01Sam Cooke was one of those, wasn't he?
33:03Yeah
33:04It was a great song, actually, that Sam Cooke did as a duet
33:06Shall we give it a go?
33:07OK
33:08We'd like that, wouldn't we?
33:09APPLAUSE
33:10If you ever change your mind about leaving, leaving me behind

37:49I can't see the sight in a sheep.
37:57Don't cry.
37:59We're bound together.
38:03Each life runs its course.
38:07I'll see you in my next one.
38:11Next time I know you'll go.
38:17Put your record on.
38:27Keep it spinning.
38:31Under the LEDs.
38:35Until I'm seasick.
38:41Nothing lasts.

39:39Butcher my heart.
39:41Please let me die.
39:43On the street where you live.

42:14One to Another, Sister and a Brother, And a change in the way that you feel. Pleased to meet you, Hope I never see you. I'll be at ease watching you sleep, watching you smile.
42:21One to Another, Sister and a Brother, And a change in the way that you feel. Pleased to meet you, Hope I never see you. I'll be at ease watching you sleep, watching you smile.
42:43Love, I adore you. I know I'm always thinking for you. And I'll be there whenever you need me. Be my Spider-Woman, I'll be your Spider-Man.
43:05Out here, what day is coming. Work sweeter every year. Tomorrow is going to be too easy, and today is going to be too near. Justice for our believers and love can keep the faith. I don't need you. I can't buy you. I can't hurt you.
43:12I hear a day is coming, more sweeter every year.
43:16Tomorrow's gonna be too easy, and today's gonna be too near.
43:21Just as law believers, I'm wrong, can't keep the faith.
43:26I don't need you, I can't buy you, I can't hurt you.
43:31I walk to another, yeah, peace to my sister, always giving me her thing for free.
43:48Start to knock you, it's good to walk you, and I'm doing the best that I can.
44:01I hear a day is coming, more sweeter every year.
44:10Tomorrow's gonna be too easy, and today's gonna be too near.
44:15Trust is for believers, and I can't keep the faith.
44:19I don't need you, I can't buy you, I can't hurt you.
44:31I can't believe that I'm telling you.
44:33It's good to be, I can't believe it, especially the truth.
44:39And I know you, I can't believe it, but you can't help you.
44:42If you cannot believe it, I can't believe it.
44:45It's important to believe it, I have a will.
44:48And when you find out how you will, I will find you.
44:51And I know you can believe it.
44:53When you find out how you find out how you find out,
44:56Stand by my accusations
45:12Don't clean your legal eyes
45:15I know you wanna keep me waiting
45:17I think it's funny that you might
45:20But it's hard to leave
45:22And it's hard to never have
45:24Can he please grow out your window
45:26He can play with all that thought
45:28Yeah, yeah, yeah
45:29Boxed apart records
45:31And a heck full of ideas
45:33And a handful of escapers
45:36They gotta end you
45:54I wanna be the one who lives for the light
46:00I wanna be the one who lives for the light
46:06I wanna be the one who lives for the light
46:22You, you know I love it when you love me
