00:00Welcome to Fool Us. You're here, I'm here, a bunch of great magicians are here.
00:16The only things that are missing are the stars of our show, Penn and Teller!
00:30Penn and Teller always give away a Fool Us trophy and a spot in their world-famous magic show
00:45to any act that fools them. Let's get this party started with our first magician.
00:51As a little girl in England, ballet was my passion. Tchaikovsky fulfilled me.
00:57Then, rug and roll found me. And video games. I became like Sandy in Greece.
01:04You know, the good girl drawn to badassery. On stage, I worked with crossbows, motorcycles,
01:11savage, the strange, controlled chaos. Magic happened to me by accident. I actually auditioned
01:19as a dancer and only found out it was a magic show as I got hired. It felt instantly familiar.
01:25The movement, the skill on display. Magicians are like superheroes. They break rules and make things happen.
01:33I don't think of myself as a standard bearer, but as a woman in magic, you kind of have to be.
01:39If I have anything to teach a young girl watching right now, I want to show her by going on stage
01:45and being intensely, passionately, me.
01:54Here comes one magic badass, Holly England.
01:58I always wanted to be on a TV show with legendary hosts, a live audience, and guest entertainers
02:08at the top of their field. To be honest, I was kind of hoping for a cool late-night talk show,
02:15but I guess this will do.
02:17Live from Las Vegas, it's the chat show. Without the chat, welcome to Tell Teller.
02:23And now, here's your host, Teller, and his co-host, Angelette, who does all the talking for him.
02:32Welcome to Tell Teller. I'm your host, Teller.
02:36We've got a fantastic show for you tonight.
02:39My first guest is a rising star in magic, the incredible Holly England.
02:52Tell us how it feels to be the most talented magician we've ever had on this sofa.
02:59Well, it's a heavy burden to bear, but someone has to carry the wand.
03:04No, no, no, but seriously, it really is like being a superhero.
03:08I get to do the impossible, and I get to wear a lot of spandex.
03:13But I see you have some of your most famous guests in pictures on your desk there,
03:21but I did notice that you have one empty frame.
03:25Maybe I can help with that, because I am somewhat of an artist myself.
03:29I didn't always want to be a magician.
03:31In fact, when I was 10 years old, I said,
03:34When I grow up, I want to be a painter.
03:38And that very night, my parents cried themselves to sleep and thought that I'd never leave home.
03:46But maybe I can use a little bit of magic to fill the empty frame in your celebrity portrait gallery.
03:53Yes.
03:54Let's start with a random selection of an incredible guest that you may or may not have had on your late night talk show.
04:02You know, someone you might find in a coffee table book.
04:05A real legend.
04:08Penn, if you could name a number between 1 and 100 for me, please.
04:12Uh, 76.
04:14Okay, so completely random, because before I actually used to go out into the audience and ask someone to name a random celebrity.
04:22But as time went on, and as I got a little older, I realized I knew less and less of the people that they named.
04:31I don't know what a BB Rexer is, but I wish it well.
04:35Tell her, if you could open the drawer in your desk, please, you should find a book of 100 inspiring people.
04:46Wonderful.
04:46Any of whom would be an incredible guest on a late night talk show.
04:50And if you could flick through the book from the back until you get to person number...
04:5676.
04:5876.
04:59And then if you could tell us who that person is.
05:03Uh, Leonardo da Vinci.
05:04Leonardo da Vinci.
05:06A great choice.
05:07Uh, and just to make sure all of the, you know, all of the pages are different.
05:11If you could see who was on the page before, who's that?
05:15Albert Einstein.
05:16And, uh, someone on the page after, maybe, too.
05:20That would be, uh, Eleanor Roosevelt.
05:23Wonderful.
05:24Uh, but you chose Leonardo da Vinci.
05:26That's correct.
05:26Um, so we go to that page, you know, I'm actually not that familiar with what Leonardo da Vinci actually looked like.
05:33Um, maybe there's another kind of more familiar face on the page.
05:38Oh, yeah.
05:38So we have the Mona Lisa.
05:40A bit more familiar.
05:42Um, you know, Leonardo da Vinci did actually create probably the most iconic and maybe copied artwork in the entire world.
05:49The Mona Lisa.
05:51So maybe I can create an artistic representation of Teller and his randomly selected guest within this frame.
06:00Um, this is going to require a delicate touch.
06:11This is a flamethrower.
06:13Is it legal?
06:15Questionable.
06:16Is it safe?
06:17Probably not.
06:18Is it more exciting than watching me paint?
06:21We can only hope.
06:22Oh, you may want to move out of the danger zone.
06:26Yeah.
06:27You'll have to tell us twice.
06:28Yeah, yeah.
06:29Okay.
06:30Teller and the Mona Lisa burned into your minds, literally.
06:36Literally.
06:36Holly England, everyone!
07:01So, you work here in Vegas.
07:02Do you know the guys?
07:03I do work here in Vegas.
07:05I have seen their show, but I think I haven't officially met them before.
07:10Are all of your acts so dangerous?
07:12Ha ha!
07:13Um, I do do quite a few danger acts with crossbows and fire and needles and sharp objects.
07:22Um, you know, just to keep life interesting.
07:26Were you a daredevil as a child?
07:28Um, I was very much the kind of geeky kid, goody two-shoes, always did what she's told.
07:34Really?
07:34Yes, yeah.
07:35So, I kind of, I guess I rebelled later in life.
07:39Well, this was fantastic.
07:40You did great tonight.
07:41Thank you so much!
07:42Holly, let's find out if you fooled your fellow Las Vegas magicians.
07:51Penn and Teller?
07:52Hello!
07:53Hey, Holly.
07:53Now, um, we like to start out with compliments.
07:58And we love this act.
08:00It's just fabulous.
08:01And the next stuff I'm going to say, you may think is complimentary and you may not.
08:07This is exactly a trick we would do.
08:10Exactly a trick we would do.
08:12This is so much in a style that we love that we could do this trick.
08:16Better than the first thing Teller said when he sat down is, we should do this trick.
08:21It is so good.
08:22It is so perfect in every way.
08:26I mean, we loved everything about it.
08:28We loved the flamethrower.
08:30For ****, you had a flamethrower.
08:32Yeah!
08:33Um, I had a real choice of numbers.
08:36We did all that.
08:37You gave everything in here is stuff that we love.
08:40So either you're absolutely targeting us or you just have exactly the same taste as us.
08:47And we love, love, love two-person acts.
08:50You know, we're a two-person act.
08:51And you've set up a thing here where you have Mona Lisa and Teller.
08:56So the two-person act thing is all the way through this.
08:59And what we like the most, the reason Teller said we should do something like this,
09:04is it's so different from what other magicians do.
09:07Just fabulous all the way through, Holly.
09:10But I think I might have snuck in a thing or two that gives you an idea that we might be on to you.
09:18Because you're exactly reading our mail.
09:21It's exactly our taste.
09:23Once again, I have no idea what you're talking about, Penn.
09:26Holly, do they know how you did your trick?
09:28Yeah, they're pretty smart.
09:29I think they have an idea.
09:33Well, it was pretty cool.
09:34And we really loved that act.
09:37The first new cover on Fool Us.
09:39Great job.
09:40Thank you so much.
09:42Holly Inland.
09:44Come back and see us, Holly.
09:48Penn and Teller will tango with more magicians before they take the dance floor themselves when Fool Us returns.
09:55Welcome back to Fool Us.
10:10I've got 52 reasons for you to watch our next Magic Ace.
10:14Hi, I'm Giancarlo Scalia.
10:18I have a background in theater and circus.
10:21Both of these experiences have influenced my magic.
10:24Helping me to understand movement, to improve my techniques and to feel free to express myself through magic.
10:31There's a lot going on during a magic trick.
10:33There is everything the audience sees and then everything that the magician is doing that the audience doesn't see.
10:40Well, hopefully.
10:40For me, it's very important to leave the audience with a sense of ease.
10:45I don't want the people to be impressed because they think what I'm doing is difficult.
10:49I just want them to be relaxed, have fun and enjoy the experience.
10:52The trick I'll be performing tonight is one of my favorites.
10:57I've been working on it for almost seven years.
11:01It's a classic of magic, but I don't think Penn and Teller have seen a version quite like this.
11:10Give it up for Madrid magician Giancarlo Scalia.
11:14Hi.
11:15How are you?
11:16Hi, hi.
11:17Nice to meet you.
11:17Nice to meet you as well.
11:18Thank you for having me.
11:19Pleasure.
11:20Thank you very much.
11:20I will show you something very quick, very simple, just with a few cards, but it won't be important, the identity of the cards.
11:27Because the important thing here will be your signature.
11:30Okay?
11:31Okay.
11:31So, very simple.
11:32Take any card that's easy to sign.
11:34Okay.
11:34Okay, this one.
11:35Why not?
11:36And please put a very big signature across the face of the card.
11:40Okay.
11:41Yes.
11:41The face, the face.
11:42Okay, no problem.
11:43No problem.
11:43Big signature.
11:44It's marked, so it will be easy to find.
11:46But is it a six?
11:47Okay, perfect.
11:48We use the six because I need more signatures.
11:51Okay.
11:51Yeah, put exactly the same.
11:52Yes.
11:53Okay.
11:54And you can give me one by one.
11:55This is fundamental for the trick.
11:57You can give me, you can give me, so I can show.
11:59It's fundamental because in this way, the next time you'll see these cards, you will be sure that are exactly your cards.
12:05Okay.
12:05Okay.
12:06And with this simple gesture, these cards just became unique in the universe.
12:13Yes?
12:13It sounds very great.
12:15What I will do will be very, very quick.
12:17Okay.
12:18So, it's fundamental.
12:19I'll tell you exactly what I will do before I do it.
12:22So, you won't miss anything.
12:24Okay?
12:25So, it's very simple.
12:26It's just four cards, signed cards lost in the deck.
12:30And what I will do will be very easy because I will just slap the deck.
12:34The card will fly out from the deck invisibly.
12:36I will catch them and throw them into my pocket.
12:38Okay?
12:39I will even tell you in which pocket they will travel.
12:42All right?
12:43Okay.
12:43So, the first card will appear in this pocket here.
12:45Okay?
12:45When I will do the effect, of course, I will show my hand empty.
12:49And, of course, I will take out your first signed card with your signature.
12:53Okay?
12:54You can take it.
12:54The second one will appear in the other pocket.
12:57Okay?
12:58Of course, in the pants pocket, of course, I will show my hand empty and take out the second signed card.
13:02Yes?
13:03The third one, it's a little more difficult because it appears in the side jacket pocket, of course,
13:07with your signature.
13:09Yes?
13:10And the last card for the grand finale, the last one.
13:13Yes.
13:14The last one appears always in the inside jacket pocket, of course, with your signature.
13:20Yes?
13:20Now, this is the idea.
13:21This is the idea of the effect.
13:23Okay?
13:24The problem with magic is that if you miss some details, it's very easy that you start to search for many solutions.
13:32For example, some people may think that I had the cards in my pocket before I started.
13:38I mean, imagine I had just the card prepared in my pocket.
13:44Any card, of course, is any pocket.
13:46I know that this can sound crazy.
13:48And, of course, it is.
13:49Because you understand that you select and sign the card in front of everybody, you know?
13:54So, this solution, of course, is completely crazy.
13:56It cannot be.
13:57Okay?
13:58This solution cannot be.
13:58These are your signature, right?
14:00They are.
14:00Yes, yes, yes.
14:01It's completely crazy.
14:03It cannot be.
14:03It cannot be.
14:04And I know that somebody could think that we arranged something before.
14:08And maybe they think that you signed more cards.
14:11But could you promise that you signed only four cards?
14:14Yes, I only signed four cards.
14:16So, if this is true, of course, I couldn't have a fifth card with your signature.
14:21No, it's impossible.
14:23No, because you signed only four.
14:25You didn't sign five.
14:26I did not.
14:26And, of course, it would be impossible to have a sixth card with your signature.
14:30Yeah, these are your signature, but it's impossible, because I couldn't even have, like, a seventh card with your signature.
14:37It's impossible.
14:38But let me ask you something.
14:40Let me ask you something.
14:42Is this your signature?
14:43It is.
14:44Yeah, really.
14:45But at this moment, the people think maybe that you signed even, like, ten cards.
14:49Or maybe even, like, twenty cards.
14:52Or maybe you signed, I don't know, thirty.
14:56Or even, I don't know, forty cards with your signature.
15:00Of course, of course, it is not possible, because some people maybe think that you're a secret assistant.
15:05You are passing me the card.
15:06Or maybe I have to put them behind my leg.
15:08I did not.
15:09Or under the other leg.
15:09Or maybe I just picked them up with your signature.
15:12But, of course, no, because you signed only four cards.
15:16Only four.
15:16Only, only four.
15:18So, now that you know everything, I will do the effect of the four cards to the four pockets.
15:25Good?
15:26Okay, so, look, very simple.
15:29Uh, just cut the deck in half.
15:33The deck, the deck.
15:34Okay.
15:34Just lift half of the deck.
15:36Look.
15:37Very cleanly.
15:38Complete the deck.
15:39Okay.
15:40Okay.
15:40And shuffle the deck.
15:41Okay.
15:42Shuffle the deck.
15:44This will be very, okay.
15:45Okay.
15:46And cut the complete.
15:47Again.
15:48Yes.
15:49Okay.
15:49So, now, look.
15:50From this situation, with the deck, shuffle and cut.
15:53I just have to memorize quickly the order of the cards.
15:58What?
15:5937, 38.
16:00Okay.
16:00It will be difficult because you shuffle four times, but I will try.
16:04Okay.
16:04From this situation.
16:05No way.
16:07Way.
16:07Yes.
16:09Look, look, look, look, look.
16:10Okay.
16:11Maybe or not.
16:11I don't know.
16:12I hope.
16:12So, as I told you, as I told you, I will slap the deck with my hands.
16:17Each time I slap the hand, one card will shoot out invisibly.
16:19I will catch it in my fingertips and throw it into each corresponding pocket.
16:24Let's try.
16:26Look, the first one.
16:30Very quick.
16:31Yes.
16:32Look, the second one.
16:33Look.
16:36Sometimes I feel like a ninja, almost.
16:38Totally.
16:38Yeah.
16:39The last two at the same time.
16:41Last two at the same time.
16:41Look.
16:42Oh, oh.
16:45Yes.
16:45Thank you very much.
16:46You can take.
16:47Okay.
16:50Uh.
16:53I know, I know, I know that you want to see the car.
16:56No problem.
16:56Look, as I promised, here is the first car with your signature.
17:01Here, the second car, of course, with your signature.
17:06The third one, you remember, a little more difficult.
17:08It's in the outside jacket pocket with your signature.
17:12And for the last car, the grand finale, please, could you take it by yourself from this pocket
17:18and show everybody, and show everybody, the fourth and last car.
17:20Yes.
17:20With you all.
17:24Thank you very much.
17:26Giancarlo Scalia.
17:29So, you moved from Italy to Madrid, I'm told, to study circus.
17:38Yes.
17:39Yeah, yeah.
17:40Was that wonderful?
17:40I studied circus in Italy, and then I moved to Madrid to study physical theater, and of
17:46course, magic, because in Madrid, it's the best city for magic, no?
17:50And now I'm working more with magic, but sometimes I still have some theater projects.
17:55So, you have theater projects now that involve magic?
17:58Yeah, yeah.
17:59I work with friends, okay?
18:01We perform with puppets, and they're like quite big puppets, because we use like a Japanese
18:05traditional technique when you manipulate directly the puppets, okay?
18:09To give life to something that doesn't have it in everyday life, it's already magical.
18:17But then, if you add also some impossible effects, it's also better.
18:21Maybe one day you'll bring that back to the fullest stage.
18:23Maybe, yes.
18:24Why not?
18:25All right, Giancarlo, let's see if you're going to pocket a fullest trophy.
18:28Oof.
18:28Shall we?
18:29Pen and teller?
18:31Oh, Giancarlo, it's so great to see a wonderful Spanish card magician.
18:37Are there any other good card magicians in Spain?
18:41I think, I think.
18:42There are a few.
18:43You have such a casual, disarming style that you can make people forget you're working your
18:52ass off.
18:53This is a really, really hard trick, and it's tough for us, because we're familiar with
18:59travelers.
19:00We know the trick, we know the plot, we know a lot of moves to it.
19:03And so, we're watching you, knowing in many cases what you're doing.
19:09We're following the plot.
19:11We know where you're going.
19:12Then we have to do this uncomfortable thing.
19:15We have to go through and say, it's the best version of this routine we've ever seen, but
19:21is there enough new to really make it seem like it fools us and doesn't just delight us
19:28and thrill us, but actually fool us at the level of the show.
19:33So, we have to beat ourselves up on this and finally decide, yeah, there's enough.
19:38You fooled us.
19:38Wow.
19:39Wow.
19:45Go ahead.
19:46Give him space for the people.
19:50Congratulations.
19:52Woo!
19:54Come here.
19:56Come here.
19:58Thank you, John.
20:00You're so amazing.
20:04Come here.
20:06Ah, a magician just got the icing on the cake, a shiny new trophy.
20:12Stay tuned to see what sweet surprises are still in store when Fool Us returns.
20:30Welcome back.
20:32Ken and Teller have already been fooled once tonight.
20:34Let's see if this next magician can do it again.
20:39Hi, my name is Francis Minotti, and I create solutions for seemingly impossible problems.
20:44Magic is never a finished product.
20:46There's always room for tinkering and improvement.
20:48And whether creating a trick for myself or consulting for others, I try to keep that in mind.
20:53I've been on Fool Us twice already.
20:55I fooled them once.
20:56But we don't think you fool.
20:57They got me the second time.
20:58That sounds about right to me.
20:59For my trick tonight, I'm performing something that I have reworked and retweaked countless times over the last 20 years.
21:07Teller actually saw one of my first performances of this trick, and it was a spectacular disaster.
21:12The trick didn't work at all.
21:14But magic is never a finished product.
21:16I put in the work, and now I'm excited to see if I can give another Fool Us trophy against two of the best in the business.
21:26Give it up for the magical mind of Francis Minotti.
21:34Thanks.
21:35Ken, you're up for it.
21:36Do you ever sit around contemplating the wonders of coincidence?
21:41Yeah.
21:41You do?
21:42Yeah.
21:42Me too.
21:43This is amazing.
21:45What a coincidence.
21:46It is kind of a coincidence, yes.
21:48Look, a Rubik's Cube with numbers on it.
21:50Mm-hmm.
21:50Let's create a coincidence.
21:51Okay.
21:52Numbers one through nine on all six sides.
21:54And the colors, you've got orange and red and green and yellow, blue.
21:58Brooke, which would you say of those is your favorite color?
22:02Orange.
22:02Orange.
22:03Mine too.
22:05Coincidence.
22:05And I'd like you to mix the Rubik's Cube, please.
22:10Now gently, gingerly, one twist at a time, until you're really satisfied that it's pretty well mixed, okay?
22:15And then once you're done, just put it back down on the table.
22:18And Brooke, meanwhile, a pack of blank playing cards.
22:23Kind of for obsessive magicians to take notes on.
22:26Okay.
22:26Brooke, I'd like you to write your name across the card.
22:29Big, bold letters.
22:30Okay.
22:30And make it as big as you can.
22:32Take up as much space as you can on the card.
22:33Okay.
22:34And once you're satisfied, well, you're doing a good job.
22:37I'm trying to.
22:38I'm doing a good job.
22:38I appreciate it.
22:39I'm doing a good job.
22:40I'll mess it up, Penn.
22:41You can't.
22:41You're doing great, Penn.
22:43And I would say with 43 quintillion combinations, there's a good chance that that combination of colors and numbers has never before existed.
22:51Yeah.
22:51Fair?
22:52Yeah.
22:53Yeah.
22:53Very.
22:54For now.
22:56Brooke, we're going to leave your card back about halfway, somewhere in the deck.
22:59Okay.
22:59It's not going to stay there.
23:00One of my favorite concepts with coincidence is that the less control you exercise over a situation, the greater the seemingly impossible coincidence you can create.
23:09So I'm going to have both of you mix the cards and not exercising much control over it at all.
23:15Take some cards for me, Penn.
23:16In fact, a few more.
23:18And, Brooke, same for you.
23:19Would you take them?
23:20Sure.
23:20And go ahead and mix them.
23:21Mix them as much as you want.
23:22Really shuffle them.
23:23And, again, you can turn them upside down as you go through.
23:26Really make a big mess of the cards.
23:27And, in fact, you know what?
23:28Let's make this even more interesting.
23:30Let's have you, why don't you both switch piles.
23:32You switch.
23:32Shall we?
23:33Yeah.
23:33And then continue shuffling.
23:34And, again, if you stop, if you happen to see Brooke's card, just keep shuffling past it, okay?
23:39Okay.
23:40I don't want you to know where it is.
23:41Then, Penn, why don't you put your stack down whenever you're done?
23:45Okay.
23:46Where would you like it?
23:46Anywhere.
23:47It's fine.
23:47Okay.
23:48Fantastic.
23:48And, Brooke?
23:49There?
23:50Well, right on top.
23:51We're going to assemble them all.
23:52Okay.
23:52Fantastic.
23:53We'll come back to these in just a moment.
23:56Penn.
23:57Yes?
23:57Look.
23:58Yeah.
23:58A three-by-three grid.
24:00Okay.
24:01Almost matching one of the sides of a cube.
24:03Now, it's not littered with numbers yet.
24:04But, I'll tell you what.
24:05Penn, I'm going to have you write down some numbers.
24:08But, Penn, how is your handwriting?
24:13Terrible.
24:14So is mine.
24:14Is it good for numbers?
24:15I'll try.
24:16Okay, great.
24:16Here's what's going to happen.
24:17Hold on to the board for me.
24:18Okay.
24:18In a moment, Brooke, what's going to happen?
24:20I'll have you read these numbers out loud.
24:22Okay.
24:23Okay.
24:23The numbers.
24:24In just a moment.
24:25Well, don't worry.
24:25I'll get to it.
24:26On a Rubik's Cube, the center squares never change.
24:29Right.
24:30So they're always, you know, the red is always opposite the orange.
24:33White's always opposite the yellow.
24:35Green is always opposite the blue.
24:36At least on this cube, right?
24:37So if you look at the red side, the red side right now, you have a 4, 9, and a 2, a 1, 5, and a 1, a 4, 9, and a 2 again.
24:46But your favorite color was orange?
24:48Orange.
24:48Orange.
24:49Let's look at the orange side.
24:50So would you read these out loud for me, please?
24:52Sure.
24:53We'll go from the top row.
24:54And, Penn, would you put them in the corresponding numbers as Brooke reads out?
24:57The corresponding here?
24:58From left to right.
25:00So if you read out 8, 3.
25:028, 3, 4.
25:04Mm-hmm.
25:06That's not so bad, Penn.
25:07Oh, it's terrible.
25:09Second row.
25:101, 5, 9.
25:121, 5, 9.
25:13Very good.
25:16And the bottom row.
25:176, 7, 2.
25:196, 7, 2.
25:20Now, if you would mix this just a turn or two more, it would be a different combination of numbers, a different combination of colors, right?
25:28I would think so, yeah.
25:30This is where it gets weird.
25:31Because up to this point, it's been perfectly normal.
25:33Can I see this for a second, please, Penn?
25:34And the marker.
25:36This is where it gets strange.
25:37Now, the mathematically inclined may be kind of ahead of me already, but if you look at this top row, 8 and 3 is 11.
25:4311 and 4 is 15, right?
25:46Mm-hmm.
25:46But if you look at the next row down, you've got 1 and 5 is 6.
25:496 plus 9?
25:52Coincidentally, right?
25:53And the second at the bottom row is 6 and 7 is 13, plus 2 is 15.
25:57Look at the columns.
25:57You've got 8 and 1 is 9, plus 6 is 15.
25:593 and 5 is 8, plus 7 is 15.
26:014, 9, and 2 is 15.
26:02Even the diagonals work.
26:03That's 8 and 5 and 2, 4, 5, and 6.
26:06A coincidence that you made just by mixing up the Rubik's Cube.
26:09That's pretty cool.
26:11It's not cool enough.
26:13Look, could you mind picking those cards up, please?
26:16Sure.
26:16This is where it gets really strange.
26:18Okay.
26:18So, you can hold it from that side or the other side.
26:22It doesn't matter.
26:23In a moment, you're going to deal these down, and we're going to count until we get to the 15th card.
26:28Okay.
26:28Okay?
26:28Whichever side you want to do.
26:29But before you do, let's recap here.
26:31Okay.
26:32You mixed up the Rubik's Cube.
26:33I sure did.
26:33Pretty thoroughly.
26:34Yeah.
26:35You had one combination that we chose, which was your favorite color, orange.
26:38Yes.
26:39That number, all those numbers added up to 15.
26:41You both mixed the cards up.
26:42We all mixed the cards up together.
26:44That's where you want to count from?
26:46You made all the decisions.
26:47Yes.
26:47Turn over that top card.
26:48That's card number one.
26:49Turn it over.
26:49Please, onto the table, in the center, right there.
26:51And the card number two on top of that, please.
26:53And then count until we get to 15.
26:55There's three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen.
27:04Down is Brooke's card.
27:07That is amazing for us today.
27:08That you are both, mate.
27:10Thank you so much.
27:11So much.
27:12Then you can go back to your seat.
27:13I appreciate you.
27:15Frances, welcome to everyone.
27:17Welcome to everyone.
27:19What do you think makes a better trick?
27:22Simplicity or complexity?
27:25That's a great question.
27:26I am guilty of being complex, but I think a simple trick is better.
27:32But what I like to do is take a couple of simple tricks and put them together so as to
27:35kind of obfuscate what people are perceiving is happening.
27:38Do you see yourself as an intellectual magician?
27:41I don't know if I'd say I'm an intellectual magician.
27:43I like intellectual ideas.
27:46I love creating intellectual concepts or using intellectual concepts for theatrical purposes.
27:52Right now, the biggest project that I'm working on is called The Wake, and the whole goal
27:56is to get people to walk out feeling changed.
27:58And it's a magic show.
27:59It's a magic show.
28:00It's a theater show.
28:01It's a music show.
28:02It's all those combined.
28:03All right, Frances.
28:04Let's see if you mixed up Penn and Teller enough to get you a Fool Us trophy.
28:08We ready?
28:08Yeah.
28:09Boys, are we ready?
28:09Hey, Frances.
28:11Great routine.
28:12You know, doing a new presentation of the magic square is almost impossible.
28:17And you're always such a good thinker, and the stuff always looks so original.
28:22Putting numbers on a Rubik's Cube and using that for a magic square is just brilliant.
28:27And it made me think we did the Hollywood squares a lot.
28:30We did it many, many times, maybe a dozen times.
28:33And we were doing it with Whoopi Goldberg, who was in the center square, and my dear,
28:38dear friend, who I miss so much, Martin Mull, was in the center square.
28:42And we were always somewhere around there.
28:44We were never really cut out to be the center square the way we wanted to, you know.
28:49But having Martin and Whoopi there, I guess they did a better job.
28:54And if the game was Fool Me, you did it.
28:58Because I didn't know, I was there totally wrapped up in the math and the magic square
29:04and everything.
29:05But then I sat down, fooled, and Teller told me how it was done.
29:10Now, I know that Teller's kind of a friend of yours.
29:12You were betrayed by Teller.
29:15So I want you to know that very, very clearly.
29:18So we think, we think that Teller's idea for how you did it might be right.
29:25As I said, you fooled me, but I put some code words in there based on Teller and, uh, I don't know.
29:32So do you think the boys figured it out?
29:34I'm pretty sure they did, yeah.
29:36Not the boys.
29:37Teller.
29:38Teller.
29:38Teller.
29:39Pleasure.
29:40My pleasure.
29:41Thank you so much.
29:41Thank you so much.
29:42Frances Minocchi, everyone.
29:47I can't believe that Penn and Teller figured that last one out.
29:51See if they can keep their streak going when Fool Us returns.
29:55Welcome back.
30:09Let's roll out the red carpet for this next potential fooler.
30:14I trained to be a scientific engineer.
30:17Then, I worked 30 years managing large staffs for energy companies.
30:21But the science of perception fascinated me.
30:25And mentalism was my secret passion.
30:28One day, I was at my desk and my entire left side went numb.
30:33It was a mini stroke, a kind of warning.
30:36My job was killing me.
30:38My wife told me, time has come, you must go and do what you love, mentalism.
30:44But she put my happiness first and for that I owe her everything.
30:48Now, I'm a teacher of what I call intellectual self-defense.
30:53I show audiences how easily they can be influenced to think.
30:57Up is down and lies are true.
31:01I've performed for many magicians and fooled them all.
31:05So, I think I have a real chance.
31:07And like my entire career in magic, it's a second chance.
31:11From France, it's the mental magic of Gabrielle Verlaine.
31:19As a mentalist, I love playing with brain.
31:29Because our brains are masters of illusion.
31:33Our brains' best trick is the illusion of free will.
31:38What if our subconscious is pulling the strings behind the gutter?
31:46Let's put it to the test by performing a little theater play I call the illusion of free will.
31:55Brooke, will you please come star in our little production?
31:59I would love to.
32:02Hi.
32:03Brooke, your role is to play someone with completely free will.
32:10Okay.
32:10Can you do that?
32:11Yes.
32:11And I'll be playing the stressed mentalist.
32:15Okay.
32:17Hoping to flip and tell her.
32:20Okay.
32:21Okay.
32:21And here is the script for the climax of our play.
32:25Okay.
32:26It's the only part of the script I have written down.
32:29Okay.
32:29It's our secret goal.
32:30Okay.
32:31Okay.
32:31Please keep this safe.
32:33We don't want to spoil the ending of our play.
32:35Okay.
32:35It's understood.
32:37No matter what happens, we will read what's written there.
32:42Okay.
32:43Okay?
32:43Okay.
32:44It's all about choices you're about to make regarding these three objects.
32:50A bill.
32:51Okay.
32:52A pocket chip.
32:53Okay.
32:53And my wallet.
32:54Okay.
32:55Ready to play?
32:56Yes.
32:57Then, to start our play, please call out action.
33:01Action.
33:02Brooke.
33:03You will freely choose one object for you, one for me, and one to remain on the table.
33:10Okay?
33:11After that, to ensure absolute free will, I will even give you two opportunities to make a switch.
33:18Okay.
33:18Okay.
33:18So you could take the cash.
33:20It's only one dollar, but it's real money.
33:24Or you might prefer the pocket chip.
33:26It could be worth nothing.
33:28Or millions.
33:29A lot.
33:30Or you might take the wallet.
33:34But what it might contain is a mystery.
33:38Okay?
33:38Trust your free will to reach our secret goal.
33:41Okay.
33:42Take one.
33:42Give me one.
33:43The last one stays on the table.
33:44Now.
33:44I'm taking the mystery.
33:46I'll give you the cash.
33:47Okay.
33:48And I'll leave the chip on the table.
33:49Okay.
33:50Happy with your starting point?
33:52I am.
33:52Okay.
33:53Now, for the two switches.
33:54What first switch do you want?
33:57Any switch.
33:57We have two switches.
33:59Let's us switch.
34:00Okay.
34:00Okay.
34:01And another switch, a different one.
34:02So you can switch the chip, or I can switch it.
34:05Okay.
34:05I'm going to take the chip.
34:06Okay.
34:07And switch with the dollar, okay?
34:08Okay.
34:08That felt like free will.
34:10Yeah.
34:11So we can end now, unless you don't really want me to keep the wallet.
34:15I don't know.
34:15Maybe you want me to switch the bill?
34:16It's possible.
34:17I'm happy.
34:19So we end the play now?
34:21Okay.
34:21I keep the wallet.
34:23Okay.
34:23Okay.
34:23So it's the end of the play.
34:25But Brooks, every decision really appeared spontaneous, born from free will.
34:31But the main question remains.
34:34Were these choices truly free?
34:36Or part of a bigger plan, with a scripted ending that I wrote in advance?
34:42Please, I'm down here.
34:43With the script?
34:43Yeah.
34:44Did I manage to script this perfect ending, matching your choices?
34:50Well, let's find out.
34:52Let's see.
34:53I did it.
34:55It's scripted.
34:56I end up keeping the wallet.
34:58The dollar bill is on the table.
35:00The chip is yours.
35:05Friends, would you please yell, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut, cut.
35:10And let's give a big round of applause to our star group first.
35:16And that's the end of our play.
35:18The Illusion of Kill.
35:21Gabriel Verum, everyone.
35:23I love that.
35:24Is mentalism and magic, are those very different things?
35:29They are, to me.
35:31I think every mentalist has their own definition.
35:34Tell me.
35:35But for me, magic is more about creating something really impossible.
35:41So they will try to figure out.
35:43And so it's more like you are aiming to create like a bomb.
35:48Like a shot.
35:48Yeah, I know it's not possible.
35:50But I have no idea how it's done.
35:52Okay.
35:53For mentalism, I think we need to try to create doubt, questioning in the mind of the audience.
36:02So it's more like a roller coaster.
36:04So it's a difference of emotion.
36:07But both are illusions.
36:10Penn and Teller have a free choice to give you a trophy or not.
36:13Let's find out what they've decided.
36:16Shall we?
36:16Yes.
36:17Good luck.
36:18Boys?
36:18Gabrielle, a wonderful, wonderful play you did for us.
36:23And that was wonderful watching it all unfold up here and all go together.
36:28It was just terrific.
36:30You get to do something that not everybody gets to do in show business or in playwriting or in movies.
36:37And that is you got to write the script and also act.
36:40And that doesn't always end up that way.
36:43Some of us have to write and then watch someone else do what we've written.
36:47And it's just wonderful to see mentalism that's so simple and so clear.
36:55Usually there's a lot of procedure.
36:58And this has none of that.
36:59Make it a beautiful trick.
37:01And also as a subject which is very dear to my heart, which is there's no such thing as free will.
37:07And I believe that very, very strongly.
37:10You did a wonderful job demonstrating that.
37:13We love that.
37:14We don't think that your play has the happiest ending for you of a trophy.
37:20But we sure did love it very much, Gabrielle.
37:24Gabrielle, do Penn and Teller know how you did your trick?
37:27Yeah, I think they do.
37:29Well, you were wonderful.
37:30We enjoyed that so much.
37:31Thank you for letting me help.
37:33Gabrielle, thank you, everyone.
37:35We've arrived at my favorite part of the show.
37:42Watching Penn and Teller do their thing.
37:45See our iconic duo in action when Fool Us returns.
37:48Welcome back.
38:02Here to close out our show with six selected volunteers who have already been put to work
38:07are our Las Vegas legends themselves, Penn and Teller.
38:10During the break, we had six guys take naked concrete blocks and decorate them as though
38:22they were giant dice.
38:24These took a die.
38:26These took a color of dot.
38:27And they put the numbers on each side.
38:30One, two, three, four, five, and six.
38:32Every one of them signed the one.
38:35And they put them into here in a wonderful order.
38:39One, two, three, four, five, six.
38:42That match the little tiny dice that are in this box.
38:46One, two, three, four, five, six.
38:49The same way.
38:50Now, who had the pink color here?
38:53You had the pink?
38:54Is that your signature?
38:55Every one of them signed the one on the die right there.
38:59And would you two, you stay here.
39:01Would you two come over here and grab this lid here?
39:04Now, you see, if you shake these up, they don't move.
39:10The six stay in the same order.
39:11They can rattle, but they can't actually turn.
39:15Same thing with the big ones.
39:18Now, I want you to watch this.
39:19Teller's putting the cover back on.
39:21He's taking a die there.
39:22And if you come over here, Teller's got a die cup.
39:25On that side of Teller, yeah.
39:27He's going to put the top on there.
39:29Then he's going to shake it around.
39:30And can you guys lift that up, put it on here without having too much trouble?
39:33Put it on here.
39:39Let's see what number we got.
39:41What number we get there?
39:43What number is that?
39:44You see?
39:45Oh, it's four.
39:46We have a four right there.
39:48It's a four.
39:49Now, shake that around.
39:50Shake it around the big one a little bit.
39:52Shake it around a little bit.
39:53Shake it around a little bit.
39:56Good job.
39:57You stand up over here.
40:00And you've got a four there.
40:02And then if you'll see, all the dice have become four.
40:13And if you shake this up a little bit, shake it up, shake it up, shake it up, shake it up, shake it up, shake it up.
40:19Now, can you lift the top off there?
40:23And you'll see that all these dice have also become four.
40:29What's the green?
40:30Come over here.
40:30Come over here.
40:31I want to show you something.
40:32Because that green one, you see, you sign that green one right there.
40:38Is that your signature?
40:39You see it right there?
40:40You can take that with you as a souvenir.
40:42Go right back to your seat.
40:43Oh, come over here.
40:44Grab your colors here.
40:45Right back over there.
40:47Just grab them.
40:48Walk right over there.
40:49A little piece of advice.
40:51If you sell that on eBay, make sure that the buyer pays for the shipping.
40:56Here you go.
41:00Wow.
41:03Okay, we are running out of time and running out of concrete blocks to give away.
41:07So we'll say goodnight, but join us next time for an all-new Fool Us when we return.
41:44We'll see you next time for a long time.
