00:00Malcolm Allison and David Swindlehurst, cup heroes of Crystal Palace.
00:22See how they did it today on the big match.
00:24Yes, our main feature today will be that stirring fourth round FA Cup tie that has captured all the headlines.
00:30Leeds United against Crystal Palace and a thrilling 20-minute chunk of that will be coming up a bit later in the programme.
00:36With, as I've said, Malcolm Allison and David Swindlehurst here in the studio to talk about it.
00:40And what supporting matches we've got today?
00:42The game that was billed as the tie of the round, Derby County against Liverpool.
00:46And the match that had a great final flourish to it, Charlton Athletic against Portsmouth.
00:50And indeed, that's the game we start with today, as our cameras nose their way up the Charlton Tunnel to catch Keith Peacock leading out the Charlton team.
01:10So, back from the noise of the cup-tied crowd, the entry of Portsmouth now, led out by the former Charlton player, Paul Wendt.
01:40The valley looking more like the old days, when these two clubs, then giants of the first division, had been known to fill the place with over 60,000 fans.
02:08Today, the crowd is a respectable 26,000, many of them up from Portsmouth for this fourth-round FA Cup tie between Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth.
02:17The team news is that Charlton continue to give a chance in attack to their tall number nine, George Hope, with David Young still named as substitute.
02:24As for Portsmouth, unchanged, but in their side, two players who've been on a cup-winning side at Wembley.
02:29The number two, Chris Lawler, formerly of Liverpool.
02:31The number nine, George Graham, who, of course, was in the Arsenal double side.
02:35The referee for this cup tie, Alfred Gray of Yarmouth, and now the crowd, with his mascots and all, are waiting for the start of this cup tie.
02:46So, Charlton kick-off in red shirts and white shorts, attacking the girl to a white Portsmouth in the white shirts and blue shorts.
02:54Portsmouth, who've already been here this season on Boxing Day, and scored a good 3-1 victory.
03:01Hales playing it to Hunt, and hit in first time by Flanagan, but wide of the goal, and a goal kick to Portsmouth.
03:11Portsmouth, who had a superb victory over Birmingham in the last round, Charlton against Sheffield Wednesday.
03:16Do you think these Portsmouth fans have arrived late, have obviously been held up on the way, or...
03:28I think they've taken the... the journey's taken longer than they thought.
03:31Oh, what a bad kick.
03:33And Hales has hit it, and he's hit it by.
03:34Well, that could have been a very, very costly mistake by Graham Lloyd.
03:41Very bad kick indeed, straight to Hales, and if anything, Hales seemed to hurry it.
03:45Might have had a little more time.
03:49I guess.
03:52Oh, he's beaten up.
03:54Well, he beat, uh, one man very easily, but Curtis, but he couldn't beat people.
03:59Here's Curtis.
04:00Here's Curtis.
04:04Now, George Graham.
04:20Norman Piper.
04:23Graham again.
04:25Charlton have got a lot of men back.
04:27They get them back very quickly.
04:28They only have two in midfield.
04:31The line with four men up front, but they do get their...
04:33players back very quickly when Portsmouth come forward.
04:37Now, how quickly can Hope go forward himself?
04:39Now, number three to one.
04:41Paul Wentz is closest to a number five.
04:43He's beaten Wentz.
04:44He's brought down a penalty.
04:46How does he do on?
04:51Well, there was no doubt in the referee's mind.
04:53He had a quick look at the linesman.
04:54And gave that penalty when Hope was brought down right on the edge of the area.
05:05Now, Bob Curtis is the man who takes the penalties for Charlton.
05:09A long time out with injury this season.
05:12And, in fact, he hasn't scored this season.
05:17But here's a moment for him.
05:21Well, Paul Wentz on the other side.
05:23I can't think what he's doing.
05:24He's actually inside the penalty area.
05:28Has to go outside the area.
05:32Well, I think the nice one might be saying that the infringement was outside the area, possibly.
05:38Maybe we haven't got a penalty.
05:39No, that was a false alarm as well.
05:46Although, I fancy that is maybe what they were talking about.
05:50And Portsmouth still protesting to the linesman.
05:52The linesman's now walking away.
05:58They're still protesting for that linesman.
06:00Paul Cahill there.
06:02Well, was that inside the area or was it out?
06:05There really is a point to investigate.
06:07The referee is satisfied that it was inside.
06:10And it's Curtis for Charlton against Lloyd for Portsmouth.
06:14And he scored!
06:21Curtis, a really extra penalty kicker.
06:24Picked back firmly wide of Lloyd.
06:26To score his last goal of the season.
06:29To give Charlton an important lead.
06:33And so, with 26 minutes gone, Charlton won Portsmouth 0.
06:37And Portsmouth still complaining that infringement was outside the penalty area.
06:41Yeah.
06:45And he scored.
06:47Peacock.
06:48Graham.
06:52Peacock.
06:54And here's McGinnis.
06:57Oh, he can get his shot in.
06:59Which he can.
06:59and in fact Graham Tutt just got his fingertips to it
07:03to turn it over
07:04getting his tip very well there
07:07taking on his man, jinking and jinking
07:08and then got half a yard to get in the shot
07:10Tutt getting a fingertip to it
07:24Roberts did very well there
07:25tricking Cunt and what a good ball here to Pike
07:28now can Pike make something of this
07:31well it took a good save
07:34and then in the end
07:35they very nearly made something of it
07:36through Bobby McGuinness
07:37Pike are doing very well there
07:42got in his shot, a good save by Tutt
07:44and McGuinness very nearly got in there
07:47to finish it off
07:48now the fourth for Charlton
07:50and a chance for them maybe to make a break
07:52stopped by Roberts in fact
07:54Eames
07:55finding mellows
07:57Reynolds calling for it and getting it
08:00hitting it left footy to George Graham
08:02a little touch there towards McGuinness
08:04even then his shot wouldn't go goalwards
08:08Reynolds again
08:11they've got quite quite coming forward once or twice
08:17Portsmouth
08:17now they've got a chance again
08:22Mellows
08:23Eames who's got Mellows up in support as well
08:28probably play the short run to him
08:30yes here it is
08:30deep across towards Norman Piper
08:34having a very good game indeed
08:36Roberts
08:36Ginnis
08:42not the biggest of men
08:43Piper
08:44well that was hoisted in
08:47Ginnis got up
08:49nodded it down for Piper
08:50had to hit it first time
08:53so Andy Nelson
08:55pretty well satisfied so far with the way it's going
08:58maybe a fortunate penalty
08:59but a lead for all that
09:00Hunt
09:05Hayles is after this one
09:07but Ginnis there
09:08Hayles did very well there
09:13that's got to be a no
09:14well Flanagan missed that one
09:16what a miss
09:19David Young the substitute
09:21there is Dust
09:22can't believe it
09:24because Hayles did so well
09:26it seemed no way that he could get faster
09:28but he did and he got it across the face of that goal
09:32Flanagan was steaming in
09:34and that really was a bad
09:37as the Russell goes for half time
09:43not a particularly good one for Portsmouth
09:45they've shown some nice touches
09:47they've had a penalty given against them
09:50which they felt themselves was a harsh one
09:52scored by Bobby Curtis
09:54on the right of those two Charlton players coming in
09:56for half time score
09:58Charlton one
09:59Portsmouth nil
10:00so welcome back to the valley
10:13the Charlton leading by one goal to nil against Portsmouth
10:16and Portsmouth now attacking the goal to our right in white
10:19now here's McGinnis
10:21Portsmouth
10:23no kick
10:27Lillie McGinnis
10:34former Motherwell player
10:35actually got the winner against Birmingham City
10:37in the last round
10:38quite with a head
10:43only as far as Hutt
10:45now
10:47brought down by Mellows
10:50free kick
10:51now it's with Pete Cobb
11:04offside
11:05oh it's dumped rather heavily there
11:12it's off the field
11:16so the game I presume
11:17will go on
11:18hopefully not concerned with that so much
11:23as with
11:24something concerning the
11:26Portsmouth goalkeeper
11:27Graham Lloyd
11:29Roberts
11:43Reynolds
11:43Piper
11:45Peacock
11:47play on
11:50play on again
11:52advantage played well there by
11:54referee Gray
11:55as Hunt
11:56finds Hales
11:57now here's Hope
11:58it's time for Fanagon
12:01this looks better for Charlton
12:02until
12:03Hayley comes to nothing
12:05but it might have a chance to revive itself
12:07as Fanagon turns the ball in once more
12:09Hope is there
12:10but where is the ball
12:14well that was remarkable
12:16it's been foul now
12:18the game's still going on
12:20oh good no play play there
12:23no penalty
12:24a dive set referee Gray
12:28gotta say
12:30my view of it
12:31for the Wales
12:32long way further than the referee
12:34that that looked more like a penalty
12:35than the first one
12:36the other one that was given
12:36I expect
12:40to get there
12:43but went getting there
12:44first and finding
12:44mellows for Portsmouth
12:45a long ball towards Piper
12:47and now
12:47Ames might get in here
12:48but Warman is after him
12:50and the whistle
12:50had gone again
12:51he really hasn't played
12:54the advantage
12:54very well this afternoon
12:55Mr. Gray
12:56he's so hot on the whistle
12:58so quick on it
12:59that the game really
13:00has had few opportunities
13:01of flowing
13:02maybe that's his style
13:08of refereeing
13:08and he's given a free kick
13:09to Portsmouth though
13:10Paul Wendt
13:12getting up mightily there
13:13and Tut
13:14gathering the ball
13:15from under his crossbar
13:16he's got
13:34offside
13:37he's got
13:53went
13:54high towards Piper
13:57Curtis getting it away
13:59here's Reynolds
14:05Peacock heading it away
14:12now here's Fanagot
14:14could be a good break
14:15this for Charlton
14:16but Lawler was in the way
14:17no hand balls
14:18at the referee
14:19Roberts instead
14:21can start something
14:22for Portsmouth
14:23told him to aim
14:24towards George Graham
14:25nodded in again
14:26towards Piper
14:27go
14:271-1
14:29with a little bit
14:33over 2 minutes left
14:34well out of nothing
14:46Portsmouth have saved
14:47this cup tie
14:48as that ball went sailing
14:52into the Charlton penalty area
14:54it needed just a delicate flick
14:56there by Norman Peiper
14:57one of Portsmouth's
14:58outstanding players
14:59back of the net
15:011-1
15:02Charlton won
15:04Portsmouth won
15:05Norman Peiper
15:07their top scorer
15:08now taking his
15:09tally to seven
15:10but well
15:13have got the replay
15:13now for Portsmouth
15:14well the game
15:17is going on
15:18while
15:18a fan is being
15:19escorted off the field
15:20festooned in Union Jacks
15:22and Portsmouth no Harry
15:27now
15:28and Portsmouth
15:32in no Harry
15:32now
15:33way into it
15:35have a stormy game
15:41at the heart of defence
15:42of Portsmouth
15:43Prepare to take all the time of the world and they don't even worry anymore because the match is over
15:48and pass up with that large, large equaliser
15:51to burn themselves a replay of Fatton Ball.
15:56Norman Piper at the number 8 was the man who scored it
16:00after Bob Curtis had scored from a penalty spot for Charlton in the first half.
16:08In many ways a disappointing cup tie, but no doubt
16:11the smiles are beyond the faces of the Portsmouth players who've earned themselves that replay
16:18showed one or two good little touches for so long in the game
16:21without ever really showing any great finishing power
16:24until it really mattered right at the end.
16:31So as the players go back to the dressing room
16:36and the supporters here, I think that gesture there tells everything about it.
16:40And the Pompey fans are delighted with that late equaliser.
16:47We have a final score line at the Valley today in this fourth round cup tie.
16:51Charlton won, Portsmouth won, and they'll have to play all over again.
16:56And indeed they play all over again at Fratton Park on Tuesday
16:59where Portsmouth are expecting a crowd of 30,000.
17:02It really will be like old times there.
17:03But two talking points from that game, both concerning the goals in fact,
17:06and the biggest was that penalty incident.
17:08Was it inside or outside the area?
17:10Portsmouth claimed quite adamantly that it was outside.
17:13So let's clear that one up as Mark Penfold plays the long ball forward here for George Hope.
17:17Paul Wendt is the Portsmouth defender, but watch the feet now of George Hope
17:22as he comes towards that penalty area past Paul Wendt.
17:25He's challenged there by Cahill, but as you can see, as Paul Cahill brings him down,
17:30George Hope is clearly one yard inside the area.
17:33A very good decision indeed by the referee Alfred Gray from Yarmouth.
17:36But what about the Portsmouth equaliser?
17:39After the game, the Charlton manager Andy Nelson suggested that there might even have been handball
17:43in the middle of the field as Portsmouth set up their attack.
17:46Let's look at that one again now.
17:48And the man to watch out for is Chris Lawler, the Portsmouth number two in white there.
17:52As the ball is played here, it clearly hits him on the arm there,
17:56but whether it was an intentional handball or not, that really is for you to decide.
18:00The referee decided that it wasn't.
18:02And as you can see, it now leads up to this late equaliser for Portsmouth.
18:05As Phil Roberts plays the long ball there towards George Graham,
18:09getting up very well indeed.
18:11And what a delicate piece of skill here from Norman Piper,
18:14who had a really good game for Portsmouth there, tucking it in for the equaliser.
18:18And the winners of that Portsmouth Charlton replay, of course,
18:20are away to the winners of the Wolves, which we play in the next round.
18:24At which point, we're going to take a short break,
18:26but after it, more cup tie action as Derby faced Liverpool.
18:29And then the big one, Leeds United against Crystal Palace,
18:32with David Swindlehurst and Malcolm Allison.
18:35We'll be right back with you.
18:44Welcome back, and now our second cup tie on the programme today,
18:46and it's one of those blockbusters between Derby County and Liverpool.
18:50It was at the baseball ground in front of a packed house of 38,000.
18:54The match was covered by ATV.
18:56The commentators, Hugh Johns, Derby County are in white.
18:59Riyadh attacking.
19:01Now it's Lee, his first chance.
19:03Riyadh!
19:04Lee!
19:05And George!
19:07Oh, that was beautiful goalkeeping by Clemens.
19:11He rode his luck.
19:12Twice he gets a pat down from Charlie George.
19:15Twice he rode his luck.
19:17Twice he guessed.
19:18And twice he guessed right.
19:20Oh, here's a Derby wall trying to prevent Liverpool
19:25from making any progress with this free kick.
19:32Keegan.
19:34Wide for Neil to chip across.
19:38Powell's got to be positive.
19:40Toshak was in and Keegan is there!
19:42That was very good cover by Derby.
19:49As Keegan was presented with a chance then,
19:52first Thomas and then Moseley prevented Liverpool taking the lead then.
19:57Quite definitely.
19:59Kennedy.
20:02Kennedy getting a gift return from Thomas
20:04and Toshak starts to run.
20:06Conlon to cover.
20:07Rod Thomas.
20:12Robbie Gardner giving this ball away more often than they should.
20:16Powell steaming back against Keegan.
20:18He goes.
20:19And referee Wallace says dive.
20:23Like a submarine captain.
20:25Dive, dive, dive.
20:26I will get no foul for that.
20:31Well, as Keegan went in there.
20:32Tackle comes chucking in.
20:35Referee Wallace says that was a dive.
20:39Kevin Keegan still can't believe it.
20:41That certainly won't agree with it.
20:45Hughes then, the free kick.
20:55And Kennedy.
20:57Powell knocks it up.
20:59Challenge again against Callaghan.
21:01Nice little ball.
21:03George for Lee.
21:04And he is away from Hughes.
21:05He fell down.
21:06A chance for Lee.
21:07Well, really,
21:10Franny Lee made a bit of a mess of that.
21:13I think it was almost as though he caught himself in two vines as to chip it over.
21:18Clements will try and swerve in past him.
21:21Clements, we've got to give credit to there, who came out.
21:24All starting as Hughes trips over his own legs almost in the centre circle.
21:28Lee alone to challenge against Clements.
21:31Scoring chance for Franny Lee, a man of his experience and he missed it.
21:36Highway chasing after it.
21:39The ball goes out.
21:43Mosley's got to kick it away.
21:45And if the ball goes out.
21:47Derby are bringing up Leighton James.
21:49Leighton James.
21:52Leighton James is being called off.
21:53And Roger Davis is going on.
21:56Well, there's a remarkable switch.
21:58Dave Makai pulls off his 310,000 pounds striking one-o.
22:06Roger Davis trots on.
22:11Keegan on the left touchline.
22:14It's Marker Todd there.
22:15Todd's still there, so he plays it back for Neil.
22:25McFarlane out.
22:27It's on for Keegan again.
22:29And Gemmell came in.
22:30Case couldn't quite make the return contact for Keegan.
22:34Now Gemmell.
22:37Roger Davis.
22:40Got a back ball.
22:41A free up and catch it.
22:42Davis now trying to get far post.
22:46And Lee is there.
22:47And Davis has got it.
22:49Roger Davis.
22:51Dave Makai, substitute Dabble.
22:54Pays off.
22:58Dave Anderson, the assistant manager out of the touchline.
23:01Far side of the crowd.
23:03Rise to Roger Davis.
23:04Roger Davis.
23:05That ball slumped beautifully out to the left side.
23:10Rionk.
23:12Did well.
23:14Comes in.
23:15Cuts it across.
23:16Bradley Lee trying to make contact, which may have upset Clements.
23:19But Roger Davis right behind him, glancing into the net.
23:231-0 Derby.
23:25And Derby County now at home to Southend United in the fifth round.
23:28But now we've cleared the decks for the Crystal Palace action.
23:31We've held over your letters this week so that we can give a little more time to the cup tie that everybody's talking about.
23:36Leeds United against Crystal Palace.
23:38And I'm quite sure that our guests today, Malcolm Addison and David Swindlehurst are dying to have a look at that one again.
23:43While the match was covered by Yorkshire Television, Leeds are in white as we join commentator Keith Macklin at the start.
23:48Referee Ken Burns of Dudley.
23:53It's a freezing, hand-rubbing afternoon with snow showers.
23:57Crystal Palace kick off.
23:59There in the dark stripes.
24:01Leeds United in white.
24:04For Maidley, Crystal Palace's colours, blue and red stripes.
24:09Wall again flying into touch.
24:11Black.
24:12Yorath.
24:13Greeny.
24:15Inside Wittall.
24:17Yorath.
24:19Greeny.
24:21Bremner.
24:22The shot.
24:23Just wide.
24:25Good effort that.
24:27Fine shot by Bremner.
24:28Side Whittle, Jorath, Reney, Bremner, the shot, just wide.
24:39Good effort that, fine shot by Bremner, it was made by Paul Reney, this is Jorath onto it.
24:47Reney was up there, just a touch to Bremner, and a quick shot by Bremner, but a good one, and just wide.
24:54Chatterton, caught down by Bremner.
24:58Well, if you ask the question, which is the first division side, and which is the third division side, on the evidence so far, you might get a surprising answer.
25:16Hinchlewood.
25:21But of course, time will go.
25:23Hinchlewood, off Lorimer.
25:26Reney, Cannon.
25:28Reney flicked up, back by Clark, Cannon got a boot to it, Whittle left it, Taylor.
25:36Crystal Palace again.
25:41Need move, it's Peter Taylor, got underneath it.
25:47To Jeffries.
25:48Jump.
25:49No, no, no.
25:52Jump.
25:55Whittle.
26:00They throw in his team.
26:02Crystal Palace doesn't want to be more than that, he would get a free kick to the tackle by him.
26:07Badly.
26:08Whittle.
26:10Taylor.
26:10Tackle by Rodgers.
26:14Play on.
26:15Down he goes.
26:18This time, the free kick's rewarded to Palace, about five yards outside the area.
26:21And another free kick to Crystal Palace in a dangerous position.
26:32They've been getting the corners, and they've been getting the free kicks.
26:35And they've been creasing their game together much better than Leeds.
26:37Peter Taylor's clip.
26:46It had to happen, sooner or later.
26:49Beautifully faced by Peter Taylor.
26:57The goal scorer was Swindlehurst.
27:00David Swindlehurst, number 10.
27:04Flicked on by Taylor to Hinchel Ward.
27:06Inside to Swindlehurst.
27:07Good move.
27:08Swindlehurst running well.
27:11Oh, Tarby palming it out.
27:12And it's lucky for him that there wasn't a Palace forward following up.
27:16Whittle had gone past him, but it's Palace who really looks so dangerous.
27:24Lot of love.
27:26Jump.
27:28Dummy well sold by Jeffries.
27:35Chatterton.
27:42Jump.
27:45Cannon.
27:46Bang down by Cherry.
27:53Edgewood.
27:55Evans.
27:58Eddie Gray came for that.
28:02Remner.
28:07Yonath.
28:09Clark.
28:10McKenzie.
28:14Clark.
28:15Hooked away by left-back cannon.
28:20Eddie Gray.
28:22Slipping wall.
28:26Taking on Evans.
28:28One too many.
28:29Wall brings it away.
28:30Frank Gray.
28:31Frank Gray.
28:39Quickly up towards Clark.
28:42Clark, the back header for Lotimer.
28:46Up for McKenzie and Clark.
28:47Eddie Gray.
28:48Eddie Gray.
28:49Eddie Gray.
28:51Just over.
28:56Again, really boiling out.
28:59Eddie Gray's shot.
29:00Here's Lotimer.
29:01Clipped it up for Clark.
29:03The defence half cleared it.
29:06Off Cannon's chest.
29:07And Gray's shot.
29:08Got a challenge by Chatterton.
29:20Frank Gray to Cherry.
29:24Running through to Lotimer.
29:26Lotimer's cross.
29:33Clark's header.
29:39Clark trying to put that inside the far post.
29:44It was a good cross by Lotimer.
29:46Beautifully placed.
29:48Clark got in position on the far post.
29:50Tried to take it across the goal.
29:52Swindlehurst.
29:57Taylor.
30:08Taylor again taking Gray.
30:15Ken Burns has seen something there.
30:18Having a war with Whittle.
30:20I wonder if we can see what went wrong there.
30:22Peter Taylor turned Frank Gray.
30:25Hit that on Harvey.
30:27Now Whittle.
30:28Yes, Whittle goes in with the elbow.
30:40Ensured.
30:41Filed tackle by Bremer.
30:44From the Palace fans.
30:47I wonder if your Leeds name is going to go.
30:52Up towards Swindlehurst.
31:16Wall is also up there.
31:17Swindlehurst turning for the shot.
31:19Ken Ball is showing how lively they are.
31:26Taylor.
31:43Taylor.
31:43There's a tall fellow again.
31:48Miraculous save by Harvey.
31:51Well, Evans and Swindlehurst went in again.
31:55Those two are causing such havoc at the back.
31:57And this time it was Evans who got the header in.
32:01And this time it was Evans who got the header in.
32:01Bayley.
32:02Mayley.
32:02Bayley.
32:07Bayley.
32:09Getting it up.
32:10Jumps.
32:10Head.
32:13Got us.
32:14Swindlehurst then.
32:16Hinchlewood.
32:17Taylor.
32:19Hinchlewood.
32:20What a good ball.
32:23Saved by Frank Gray.
32:24Jeffries to all.
32:48Harris stroking the wall about with total confidence.
33:01Taylor.
33:02Whatever.
33:11Dremler.
33:13Quickly out to Clark.
33:16Clark's shot.
33:19And Hammond's fingertips give away the corner.
33:24The first time this half leads have looked dangerous with Clark's shot.
33:36McKenzie over the top.
33:45Here's the corner.
33:46McKenzie gets up well but puts it over the top.
33:51Come straight back by Evans.
33:54And bouncing awkwardly for Harvey.
33:56Had to punch it.
33:57Hinchawood.
33:58Harvey's off his line.
34:00That hit made they lucky for Leeds.
34:03Dremler.
34:04Lorimer.
34:05Lorimer.
34:06Corner.
34:07Lorimer.
34:08Lorimer.
34:09Lorimer.
34:10Lorimer.
34:11Corner.
34:12Lorimer.
34:13Lorimer.
34:14Lorimer.
34:15Lorimer.
34:16Lorimer.
34:17Lorimer.
34:18Babe.
34:19Here's the quote.
34:20旄末.
34:21Hebilla.
34:22He at the goal.
34:23Yeah.
34:24Neap.
34:25di, Leap.
34:26Woodside.
34:27Eriq.
34:28He at the top.
34:29Matic.
34:30Combine.
34:31Madeley was up, Yorath, off the line by Wall, the corner, Madeley got up, headed in by
34:47Yorath, and Wall's clearance, Sherry, to Lorimer,
35:17Jeffery's taking that, as Mackenzie waited, Hunter's in the action already, the crowd cheering, as if they believe single-handedly can save them.
35:30Good ball to Lorimer, Mackenzie, Cherry's up there, corner, Leeds getting ready for their last throw of the dice.
35:47Madeley, behind off a defender, Madeley got up to this,
36:13Cannon for Fallos.
36:17Whittle.
36:23Just one minute of normal time remaining.
36:26Time running out for the cup favourites.
36:34Jeffery's.
36:35Jumped.
36:36Taylor.
36:37Frank Gray going strike to strike with him, but Taylor still has possession.
36:48What a cheeky move by Taylor, past Frank Gray.
36:50Whittle.
36:51Whittle.
36:52And Madeley got there.
36:53Taylor again.
36:54A present for the stand.
36:56What a cheeky move by Taylor, past Frank Gray.
36:59Whittle.
37:00And Madeley got there.
37:01Taylor again.
37:02A present for the stand.
37:03Yellow.
37:04.
37:10Can't get it.
37:29Time for injury now.
37:30Callas within a couple of minutes or so of yet another of those tough uptricks that
37:43his job leads over the years.
37:49That's Hinchelwood.
37:52Frank Gray to Harvey.
37:54Frank Gray, he's needing a last desperate gallop.
38:05Not coming that way, that's Jumps, May Lee, Joris, Rini, up for McKenzie, Cherry, Clark getting
38:21up, but again the Palace defence getting away.
38:24Chatterton.
38:25Chatterton.
38:26To Taylor.
38:27Hunter.
38:28Chatterton up.
38:31Taylor.
38:32Inside Hunter's attempted tackle.
38:37We turn ball from Swindlehurst.
38:38Taylor.
38:39Taylor.
38:40Taylor.
38:41Taylor.
38:42Taylor.
38:43We turn ball from Swindlehurst.
38:45Taylor so cheeky, so impudent inside the area.
38:49And still going but finally Gray gets it away.
38:55To Lorimer.
38:56To Lorimer.
38:57Inside injury time.
38:58Mackenzie.
38:59A couple of minutes of injury time.
39:00Now Maidley.
39:01The deflected ball through to Hammond.
39:03Mr. Burns knows his whistle.
39:04Crystal Palace have pulled off the upset.
39:05Their players run to the end of the ground.
39:06The goal scorer David Swindlehurst.
39:07There the Palace supporters congregate.
39:08And yet again Legion.
39:09have been defeated.
39:10So far.
39:11The goal scorer David Swindlehurst.
39:12The goal scorer David Swindlehurst.
39:13There the Palace supporters congregate.
39:14And yet again Legion.
39:15have been defeated.
39:16surprisingly in.
39:17in a cut try.
39:18they were expected to win.
39:19but deservedly so.
39:20Mr Burns knows his whistle
39:24Crystal Palace have pulled up the upset
39:27Their players run to the end of the ground
39:30The goal scorer David Swindlehurst
39:32There the Palace supporters congregate
39:35And yet again Legion Idol
39:36Have been defeated surprisingly
39:39In a cup tie they were expected to win
39:42But deservedly so
39:44The Palms deservedly going to Palace
39:47Who played fine football
39:49Beautiful attacking football
39:51Composed defence
39:52And on the afternoon
39:54Undoubtedly the better side
39:56And here with us
39:58The man who scored that headline making goal
40:00David Swindlehurst
40:01And here too the Crystal Palace manager
40:03Malcolm Addison
40:03Let's come to you first of all Malcolm
40:05Even on the edited highlights there
40:06You look to be all over them
40:07Yes I felt that
40:10We were running better than they were
40:13And we were passing better than they were
40:14And I felt overall that
40:16We definitely deserved to win
40:17There was a lot of talk about
40:18A secret plan to disrupt Leeds
40:20Briefly what was that?
40:22All we decided to do
40:23Was to play with a sweeper
40:25And four markers at the back
40:27Allowing them to break whenever they could
40:29And so it became a competition
40:31Between their strikers
40:32And Lorimer and Gray
40:34And our defenders
40:35And we outplayed them
40:37And we outran them
40:37What did it prove to you though
40:39Over 90 minutes?
40:41It proved that
40:41That this team
40:44Crystal Palace
40:44You know
40:45Can compete with any team
40:46In England now
40:47I knew
40:48Previously that they were a good side
40:50By the great results
40:51They've had
40:51At places like Wrexham
40:53Where I know that
40:54First division teams that go there
40:55Would have a job to beat them
40:56By one goal
40:57And it was just
40:58A matter of playing
40:59On a big ground
41:00On a big occasion
41:01And seeing whether they could
41:02Stand up to the pressure
41:03Do the players feel that as well David?
41:06Yeah I think so
41:07Because you in fact
41:09Scored the winning goal
41:11And yet I know
41:12From what I've heard
41:13From Malcolm in the past
41:14That you were fairly tense
41:15As a young player
41:16And that was a bit of a problem for you
41:17And I would have thought
41:18It had been a bit of an ordeal
41:19For you yesterday
41:20Yeah I used to be very tense
41:23I used to create
41:24All my own problems
41:25But yesterday
41:27It worked in the opposite
41:29Way for me
41:30I went out and
41:31I looked at the pitch
41:32Before the game
41:33And I just felt great
41:35You know
41:35And that was the case
41:37With most of the players
41:38They all felt that
41:39Yeah
41:39Fairly relaxed
41:40What did Malcolm in fact
41:40Say to you before you went out
41:42What was his last instructions?
41:44Go out and play
41:44And enjoy yourself
41:45Don't feel sorry for yourself
41:49At the end of the game
41:50You certainly didn't do that
41:52We didn't, no
41:53Do you want to see that goal again?
41:54Love to
41:55Let's have a look at that
41:57David Swindlehurst goal then
41:58Tell us about it Malcolm
41:59Peter Taylor free kick
42:01You see Peter Taylor
42:02Flights the ball
42:03Over the top of the
42:04The three man wall there
42:06And you see Ian Evans come
42:07With Clark
42:08Trying to mark him
42:09Mainly
42:09In between
42:10David
42:12And Ian Evans
42:13And David made a run
42:15Around the back of him
42:16Run on the blind side
42:17It's a free kick
42:18That we
42:19One of the free kicks
42:20That we do
42:20And they were so aware
42:22Of Ian Evans
42:23That they left David
42:24Unmarked
42:25And we thought
42:26This might happen
42:27I think the other thing
42:28That was very impressive
42:29About you yesterday
42:29David
42:30Was your shooting power
42:31We caught a glimpse
42:32A bit earlier there
42:33Of a tremendous
42:34Almost a Lorimer shot
42:35That you made
42:37Yeah well
42:38We've been
42:38Practising this all week
42:40He's been Lorimer
42:42With what in mind
42:45Just to get Paul Hammond
42:50Used to shots
42:51From long range
42:52And hitting them
42:54As hard as I could
42:54At him
42:54So he can hold them
42:56And things like this
42:57And Malcolm thought
42:58It would be a good idea
42:59If we could try
42:59And use it in our favour
43:00Yes
43:00It very nearly worked
43:02In your favour
43:02To superb effect
43:03Just tell us about
43:04This one now
43:04You're taking this
43:05You're a good way out
43:07Aren't you
43:07Yeah well
43:08Martin Hidgewood
43:08Was standing on the ball
43:09And I told him
43:10To get out of the way
43:10I just wanted a
43:11Straight crack at it
43:12And Duncan McKenzie
43:13I saw him out
43:13Cormier
43:14And I said
43:14I just made up my mind
43:16I wasn't going to be
43:16Put off or anything
43:17And I put a little bit
43:19Of bend on it
43:19Around the outside
43:19Of the wall
43:20Yeah
43:21Do you feel that
43:22This is going to
43:22Lift the players now
43:23To make you
43:24As certain as anybody
43:25Can be for promotion now
43:26I think it must do
43:28You know
43:29We've beaten the best team
43:30In the country
43:31We said we were
43:33A good team
43:34Before we went there
43:34And we've gone out
43:36And proved it now
43:36So it has to help us
43:39Really doesn't it
43:39What about Chelsea now
43:41I think it's
43:43The best draw
43:44We could have had really
43:45It's like a home draw
43:47You know
43:48We'll have 25,000 people there
43:49Or maybe 30,000
43:50And it's a great
43:52Playing area
43:52You know
43:53So it's really
43:54Like a home draw
43:55Yeah
43:55What's it done
43:56To you personally
43:57I mean
43:57It's been a marvellous weekend
43:58And I've seen you quoted
43:59As saying
43:59It's one of the greatest
44:00Days in your career
44:01Malcolm
44:02And you've taken
44:02A hell of a lot of knocks
44:03Over the last few years
44:04Does this sort of
44:06Ram criticism
44:07Down people's throats
44:08Do you think
44:08Yes
44:09You see
44:10A football team
44:11A football club
44:13Is a very very difficult
44:13Thing to handle
44:15And especially
44:16When you've got to start
44:17Right from rock bottom
44:18Where
44:18You know
44:19I felt it was
44:20A very badly run club
44:21And it takes time
44:23And that time
44:24Is a killer
44:24And when it starts
44:26To come right
44:27You know
44:27And you see
44:28One or two things
44:29Come on
44:29Like yesterday
44:30Was sort of
44:30The crowning glory
44:31Two weeks ago
44:33I saw our youth team
44:34Be it
44:34Arsenal youth team
44:35And I saw some
44:3615, 16 year olds
44:37Who couldn't really play
44:38And yesterday
44:39I saw some
44:4022 year olds
44:41Who couldn't really play
44:41So it's
44:42Really beautiful
44:43You've convinced yourself
44:44You're on the right lines
44:45If ever you had any doubts
44:46Then
44:46Yes
44:47I've got a great staff
44:49You know
44:49Tremendous people
44:50Working around me
44:51And Terry's done a fantastic
44:53Terry Vendor
44:53Has done a fantastic job
44:54And the players
44:55You know
44:56They're a great group of players
44:57They're probably
44:57The best group of players
44:59I've ever had
44:59You know
45:00As far as
45:00Wanting to work for each other
45:02And so it makes it
45:03A really happy thing
45:04Not a bad old hat
45:05You're getting to know
45:06People are getting to know
45:07Pretty well
45:08What's the story behind that?
45:10Actually
45:10When we were going to Scarborough
45:12You know
45:13I said to Terry
45:13We'll have a laugh
45:14With this hat
45:14I said
45:15And we got to
45:16Crew station
45:16We were changing
45:17And so I had it in a bag
45:18And I brought it up
45:19This brown bag
45:20And I put it on
45:21And all the lads went
45:22Oh you're due for us baby
45:23Like good style
45:26Just five seconds left Malcolm
45:28Do you really believe
45:29That Palace can win the Cup?
45:31Yes of course I do
45:31I mean
45:33You only have to win six games
45:35To win the FA Cup
45:35One we had to play eight
45:36You know
45:37Because we had to come
45:38In the first round
45:39But it's not difficult
45:40David
45:41Do the players share that belief?
45:43All the way
45:43All the way?
45:44All the way
45:45Well it will be interesting to see
45:46Malcolm
45:47David
45:48Congratulations
45:48And many thanks
45:49Thanks a lot
45:50Cheers
45:50That's it then
45:52A day I'm sure
45:53All Palace fans are going to remember
45:54Let's leave you today
45:55With three goals
45:56And indeed that they all meant
45:58More than usual
45:58In these days
45:59Of financial hardship
46:00In football
46:01They meant
46:01A profitable replay
46:02For Portsmouth
46:03Another big cup gate
46:04For Derby
46:05And for Crystal Palace
46:06A little bit of sunshine
46:07And something close
46:08To a full house
46:09At Chelsea
46:09In the next round
46:10That's instead
46:11Can start something
46:13For Portsmouth
46:13Turled in the way
46:15Towards George Graham
46:16Nodded in again
46:17Towards Piper
46:17Go
46:18Got a bad ball
46:19A three up
46:20Can catch it
46:20Davis now trying to get
46:24Far post
46:25And Lee is there
46:26And Davis has got it
46:27Peter Taylor's clipped
46:30It had to have one
46:33Sooner or later
46:34That's a good thing
46:43Very good gauge
46:57The End
