00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge.
00:03Today we're going to take a look at the Kaylee Anthony case.
00:06This is one of those cases that shocked the nation,
00:09not just because of the verdict, but the state of how that little girl was found.
00:13The outright lies that were told by the mother just to try to save her own skin.
00:18But did she get the beautiful life she was looking for?
00:21Let's get into this case and find out.
00:23Kaylee Marie Anthony was born August 9, 2005, to Casey Anthony in Orlando, Florida.
00:34The father is still unknown to this day.
00:36In fact, Casey hid her pregnancy for many months until it was totally obvious.
00:42Once she was born, her grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony, fell head over heels in love with her.
00:47Kaylee being the first grandchild, her grandparents showered her with so much love and affection.
00:53She even had a name for her grandfather, George.
00:56She called him Jojo.
00:57Her mom was a good mom, at least according to friends and family.
01:01She loved swimming in the family pool, playing with toys, and looking at picture books.
01:06As she was growing from an infant to a toddler, she had beautiful brown hair and big brown eyes.
01:12Truly a little angel.
01:17A call came in to Orlando 911 dispatchers at 10.36 p.m. on July 15, 2008.
01:25A frantic Cindy told them that her granddaughter is missing.
01:29After giving her basic info on the child and also letting her know that there is a foul smell coming out of the trunk of Casey's car,
01:38which was abandoned in a parking lot, the dispatcher asked to speak with the mom.
01:42Casey reluctantly tells the dispatcher that Kaylee has been missing for 31 days, that she was kidnapped by a babysitter, and she hasn't seen her since June 9th.
01:53She was then asked, why didn't you report this earlier?
01:56Casey replied, because I naively assumed that I could find her myself.
02:00Apparently I couldn't.
02:01She then gives detail about the name of the nanny, Zanida Fernandez-Gonzalez, a.k.a. Zanny the Nanny.
02:09She hung up the phone once police arrived.
02:12Her lack of emotion was what sent alarm bells off in the police's mind.
02:17Casey's parents and brother Lee were trying like crazy to get any information out of her.
02:22She kept sticking to this story, so when detectives arrived around 4 a.m., they offered to drive her to the address of where this nanny might be.
02:32They went to three different addresses, but either no one was home or no one lived there by that name.
02:37After their initial search yielded no results, they dropped Casey back off at her house around 7 a.m. on July 16th.
02:45When Detective Mellick of Orange County Sheriff's Apartment started investigating this case, he found major red flags with Casey's signed statement.
02:58Her story was that she dropped off Kaylee at the nanny's apartment, then went to work.
03:03Speaking to apartment managers, they have no record that anyone by that name given ever lived in those apartments, and one of those addresses was to a retirement home.
03:14After a little further digging and found out that there was no one by the name of Zanida Fernandez-Gonzalez, he came to the conclusion that she just didn't exist.
03:25Detectives then checked out where Casey supposedly worked.
03:29She claimed to be an event coordinator for Universal Studios and had been working there for years,
03:34but in fact, she did work there, but worked in a kiosk selling pictures of people on the Incredible Hulk ride.
03:41But she was fired from that job two years ago.
03:44Hoping to catch her in a lie, Detective Mellick, another detective, and a police sergeant picked up Casey again at 9.30 a.m. on July 16th.
03:55They get down to Universal Studios, and after going down hallway after hallway, they reach the dead end.
04:01Casey turned to them and said,
04:03I actually don't work here.
04:05They took her back to the police station to interview her, and they really pressed hard, but they couldn't get anything more out of her.
04:12So they arrested Casey for child neglect, giving false statements to law enforcement and obstruction of a criminal investigation.
04:20When she got arrested, Casey called her mom and was very upset about her being on the TV,
04:26saying that she doesn't know what Casey's involvement is with Kaylee's disappearance.
04:31She seemed more upset about the attention being paid to her child, rather than to her.
04:36They just want Kaylee back.
04:38That's all they want, Casey told her best friend on the phone.
04:41Jealousy, perhaps?
04:42She was released from Orange County Jail on September 5th, 2008.
04:47Her $500,000 bond was posted by her parents,
04:50but she had to wear an ankle monitor to make sure she doesn't try to run.
04:55Detectives took a look at what Casey was actually doing during that 31 days that Kaylee was missing.
05:02Keep in mind that Casey said she was looking for Kaylee the whole time.
05:07June 16th was the last time George and Cindy saw Kaylee.
05:11She was asked,
05:13Where are you going?
05:14She said she's going with mommy.
05:15But later that night, Casey was seen on a surveillance camera at Blockbuster Video Store with her boyfriend and without Kaylee.
05:24Then on June 20th, Casey and Tony went to Fusion Nightclub and she entered a hot body contest.
05:31June 27th, Casey and her boyfriend go shopping at the mall.
05:35Then later that evening, they go back to Fusion Nightclub.
05:38July 2nd, Casey gets a tattoo on her left shoulder that says Bella Vita, which is Italian for Beautiful Life.
05:46She was talking non-stop with a tattoo artist about her new boyfriend and never mentioned Kaylee at all.
05:52July 3rd, Cindy shows up to where she thinks Casey works at Universal Studios, calling Casey, demanding to see Kaylee.
06:00Casey tells her,
06:01We're in Jacksonville.
06:02On July 4th, she attends a party and fireworks show.
06:05Then finally on July 15th, George and Cindy confront Casey about where Kaylee is.
06:11That's also around the time George gets Casey's car out of the impound lot, finding out it was abandoned in an Amscott parking lot.
06:20And it reeked of a foul odor coming out of the trunk.
06:23But it was empty.
06:24On October 24th, Kaylee was presumed dead.
06:27Her grandparents held a memorial service for her.
06:29In case he was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four counts of providing false information to police.
06:40She pled not guilty.
06:41A meter reader by the name of Roy Cronk called police on December 11th to report he found a human skull in a wooded area near the Anthony's home.
06:51He was taking a break and had to use the restroom, so he was walking into this patch of woods.
06:57That's when he discovered her.
06:59The forensic team was on the scene quickly.
07:02What they found was horrible.
07:04She was completely skeletonized with what looked like duct tape around the skull.
07:09There were trash bags, a canvas bag, clothes, and a baby blanket with Winnie the Pooh on it.
07:14It looked like she had been out there for a long time.
07:17After everything was collected, it was brought to Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia, better known as Dr. G because of her TV show.
07:28After sending one of the bones to the FBI to be identified, she conducted an autopsy, as much as you can on dried-out bones.
07:35The thing that struck her odd is that the mandible, or the bottom jaw, was still attached to the skull, which after that amount of time being exposed to the elements is odd.
07:46The only thing holding it in place was the duct tape.
07:49There was still hair on the tape as well, so there was some things that could be tested.
07:54And after seven days, the FBI came back with the results.
07:58It was Kaylee Anthony.
07:59400 pieces of evidence were presented.
08:13A strand of hair was recovered from the trunk of Casey's car, which was microscopically similar to the hair taken from Kaylee's hairbrush.
08:21The strand showed root banding, in which hair roots form a dark circle after death, which was consistent with hair from a dead body.
08:29An air sampling procedure called LIBS was performed on the trunk of Casey's car, which were consistent with a decompositional event.
08:38Plus, there was chloroform detected as well.
08:40Even investigators and George Anthony, a retired cop, noticed the smell of a decomposing body in the trunk of the car.
08:48Two different cadaver dogs made a positive hit on the trunk of the car when they smelled it.
08:54Google searches of the term neck-breaking and how to make chloroform were on the computer accessible to Casey.
09:01A Winnie the Pooh blanket matched the same theme of Kaylee's room.
09:05Canvas laundry bag matched another one in the laundry room.
09:09The duct tape was the same brand of tape that was found in the garage.
09:14When it came to jury selection, it was hard to try and find an impartial jury for this case, so they had to bring people from Pinellas County to Orange County.
09:23The trial began May 24, 2011.
09:26In the opening statements, lead prosecutor Linda Burdick described the disappearance of Kaylee Anthony,
09:32that Casey used chloroform to knock out Kaylee, then put the duct tape around her mouth and nose to suffocate her,
09:40then left her in the trunk of the car for a few days, and then ditched her into the wooded area.
09:45The reason was to free herself of any responsibility and to enjoy the life that she wanted to live, partying and doing what she wants.
09:54The defense, led by Jose Baez, claims that Kaylee drowned by accident in the pool and that George yelled at her that she was going to spend the rest of her life in jail for child neglect,
10:06then proceeds to help her cover it up.
10:08He claims that this was something Casey had done all of her life, was to hide her pain because her father sexually abused her since she was eight.
10:17George Anthony testified that he never harmed Casey and the allegations were not true.
10:22He claims he didn't smell the odor of decomposition on June 24, but did smell it on July 15.
10:29Ricardo Morales, an ex-boyfriend of Casey Anthony's, was called up to the witness stand because he had posted on his MySpace page a picture of a woman with a rag over her face with the saying,
10:42Win her over with chloroform.
10:44He stated that it was just a post and that he had never talked to Casey about it.
10:48Then they called up John Bradley, who analyzed the data on the computer, which found a lot of deleted data that was recovered about neck-breaking in chloroform 84 times.
11:00The prosecution called chief medical examiner, Dr. G., to testify that she determined Cayley's manner of death to be a homicide, but listed it as death by undetermined means.
11:11She suspected foul play because of the duct tape and the manner in which the body was found.
11:17Quote, there is no child that should have duct tape on its face when it dies.
11:21The defense tried to counter this by bringing forensic pathologist Dr. Warner Spitz, who conducted a second autopsy and challenged Dr. G.'s autopsy, calling it shoddy, because she didn't open the skull.
11:36But when Dr. Spitz tried to open the skull, it fell apart in his hands.
11:40She stated later that the reason for not doing this was because there was no need for it.
11:45It was dried up bone. You could flip it over and shine a flashlight into it, and also warned against cutting the skull because it would break.
11:53The prosecution rested its case on June 15th after calling 59 witnesses for 70 different testimonies.
12:01The defense rested its case on June 30th after calling 47 witnesses for 63 different testimonies.
12:09Casey Anthony did not testify.
12:11The jury went out for deliberation on July 4th, and on July 5th, 2011, the jury reached a verdict, not guilty for first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and aggravated child abuse, but was guilty of providing false information to law enforcement, but was released with time served.
12:32This absolutely outraged everyone.
12:42People were pissed with not only Casey, but also with the jurors and the judge.
12:48Justice was not served.
12:49So you could definitely say Casey went into hiding and tried to lay low, but she still kept her party girl lifestyle.
12:57Only this time, she would have to find a whole new set of friends.
13:00Civil lawsuits happened with a number of people, and even Casey had to file for bankruptcy because she owed $1 million in legal fees to her attorney.
13:10She tried to get a couple of businesses off the ground, but nothing worked.
13:14She tried dating.
13:15That failed, too.
13:17The justice system failed, but I guess living with the court of public opinion, she will be forever hated.
13:23After all, no one is trying to find the so-called real killer.
13:27Everyone knows who did it.
13:28The memorial spot where little Kaylee was found had shrunk over the years.
13:33Most of the items were torn down because it was on private property, but there was a small spot that still remains close to the curb.
13:41Her remains were cremated, but the location of the ashes are unknown.
13:45As much as everyone wants to move on and forget, we will never forget that a little angel was taken way too soon.
13:52Rest in peace.
13:53Kaylee, Marie, Anthony.
13:55I tell you, this is one of those cases that just, when you thought, you've forgotten about it, something in the media always pops up.
14:04I saw an article recently that Casey actually wants to have another child.
14:09My initial thought was, oh, hell no.
14:11I wouldn't trust this woman with a houseplant, let alone another child.
14:15What if she gets bored with it?
14:17Is she going to do the same thing?
14:18Like I said before, no one is looking for the real killer because they already know who did it.
14:24And because of Double Jeopardy, you can't try the same person twice for the same thing.
14:29So just like with O.J. Simpson, if you have enough money, you can buy your way out of any sticky situation.
14:36But at the same time, people are going to back away from you.
14:40Casey will forever have that stigma that she's a baby killer.
14:44So what did you think of this case?
