00:00Get in! No, he cannot!
00:02God, did it feel like I won a Super Bowl.
00:05Not at our house. I'm just telling you.
00:12Hey everybody and welcome. I'm Kyle Brandt here with NFL Classics.
00:16After further review, we are going back to a wonderful time called January of 1987.
00:22It's Super Bowl XXI and it's glorious.
00:24The Broncos are led by John Elway and they got here by winning two close playoff games
00:29including the AFC title game against the Browns.
00:32In that game, Elway dropped what's known as the drive.
00:36A 15-play masterpiece that began on his two-yard line.
00:40The Broncos felt like destiny.
00:43But on the flip side, the Giants were dominant.
00:46They won their two playoff games by a combined score of 66-3.
00:51This is the New York Giants' very first Super Bowl as a franchise.
00:53Phil Simms is in his third season as the starter under Bill Parcells.
00:56You've got Lawrence Taylor who won league MVP this season.
01:01Still the last defensive player to do it.
01:03And by the way, the Giants' defensive coordinator is Bill Belichick.
01:07The visuals are incredible.
01:08We're looking at a coin toss, but let's get some friends in here.
01:11This game is often called the Phil Simms game.
01:15And ladies and gentlemen, we have Phil Simms.
01:18It's an incredible thing.
01:19Phil, it's been nearly 40 years.
01:21We're looking at the game again.
01:23How often have you watched this and relived this in that time?
01:26Oh, Kyle, well, first off, good to be with you and everything and to see this.
01:30What I noticed about that coin flip, we had one guy go out for the coin flip, Harry Carson.
01:36Because George Martin and I were captains.
01:39And I said, man, that's a waste of time.
01:40I don't want to go out there for the flip, you know, whatever.
01:42But I've seen it, you know, a few times on TV.
01:46And, of course, once it was over, I think the following week, me and my wife, we probably sat in the living room and watched it about two or three times, you know.
01:54I only want it.
01:55I only do what we want it to do.
01:58I'm thrilled that you're here.
02:00Thrilled that you're here.
02:01But we have to bring in another giant.
02:03This is a giant of industry, of media, of New York City.
02:09It is the one, the only, Christopher Mad Dog Russo.
02:13Doggy, how we doing?
02:15Kyle, good to have you.
02:16Good to be.
02:17Thanks for having me on this great show.
02:19Phil, you know I love you.
02:20This is a huge day for giant fans.
02:22I haven't won since 56.
02:24Let's go from one legendary quarterback to another.
02:26Peyton Manning, 10 years old when this game is played.
02:30But if I remember it, Peyton, I know you remember it.
02:32You were envisioning yourself playing in Super Bowls all the way back then.
02:36What do you remember specifically about Giants-Broncos?
02:39Yeah, Kyle, this was a huge game, certainly when it comes to the history of the NFL.
02:44Giants are one of the great franchises in the league, and I got to enjoy a lot of their success while watching my brother Eli.
02:51But it's crazy to think that heading into 1986, the New York Giants had never won a Super Bowl.
02:59They'd won championships, but not in the Super Bowl era.
03:02And that's hard to believe.
03:04But it's hard to look back on this game as anything but the Phil Simms game.
03:09Phil Simms was lights out in this game.
03:13He was almost perfect.
03:14It just seemed like every ball was in the perfect spot to McConkie or to Bavaro.
03:20There was a tipped ball in there somewhere that maybe tipped off Bavaro to McConkie,
03:25which tells you how accurate Simms was that Super Bowl.
03:29Maybe he did that on purpose, but he was awesome.
03:31He was the MVP.
03:32It's funny to see a young John Elway here knowing that he'd get back to the Super Bowl four more times after this one.
03:39John, just an incredible quarterback.
03:41You see what a great athlete that he was.
03:45But John had his hands full going against this Giants defense.
03:48And obviously, you also feel that when the other quarterback is on fire and not throwing an incompletion,
03:55you feel like, I've got to go out there and do something special.
03:57But it's tough because the defense, I've got Lawrence Taylor on the other side.
04:01They're not giving up anything easy.
04:03So, yeah, this is certainly one of those historic games that is just so great to relive.
04:07Peyton, you're the best.
04:09Appreciate you.
04:10And it's really too bad we never got a Broncos-Giants Super Bowl with you and Eli under center.
04:16One of that ones.
04:17Let's go to Southern California.
04:19It's a beautiful scene.
04:20We're going to pick up the game after the Giants are already down 3-0.
04:24Phil, this is the Giants' first drive of the game.
04:27It's your first Super Bowl snaps.
04:29Take us through what you're thinking and how you were feeling very early as you took the field.
04:33Well, we were going to come out and be aggressive.
04:35I was not nervous.
04:36You know, I just wasn't that – I never really got nervous before games.
04:40You just play and see how it goes.
04:42And don't worry about winning and losing early.
04:44But I like the plan.
04:45We were going to come out and throw the ball.
04:48The very first pass of the game.
04:50Yeah, look at that.
04:51Man.
04:52You know, I'm just going to have one picture.
04:54That's the blow dryer.
04:56But it was really interesting starting the game, getting in the huddle.
05:01And, Kyle, I did a lot of reading and, Chris, about the Super Bowl and people's players' reaction, how they did it.
05:08Did they get nervous all the – and I got in the huddle, and I swear we were – we had guys that were hyperventilating before the first play.
05:14And here's a play.
05:16If you watch it, Tom Jackson comes on a blitz right there, and he mistimed his jump and gave me just that split second to throw the ball to Lionel Manuel.
05:25And, man, we worked on that play all week, and we knew it was going to work, and he made a nice catch on the play, too.
05:31Dude, did you script any of these plays?
05:33You said you wanted to throw the ball.
05:34Did you do it like Walsh and have eight, nine plays all set up on this opening drive or not?
05:39No, we didn't do that with the Giants.
05:40We just called each play according to what we were going to see, and it wasn't 10 plays or 13 plays what we're going to do.
05:48I know this.
05:49After that completion and the next one, I hit Bavaro in tight coverage.
05:53The third play, I was expecting us to take a shot, you know, try to go for a score.
06:00And they didn't call it, and they caught me on camera screaming at the sideline, you cowards.
06:07I was really mad because I wanted to throw it.
06:10I thought we had it set up where I'd have a chance to go for a big play and have success with it.
06:16Phil, how quickly does it hit you that you're feeling it on this day, that you're in a rhythm, you may be unconscious, that this is going to be a special day for you?
06:25When does that hit you?
06:28Kyle, never.
06:29You know, it just played.
06:32And, you know, you played and all that.
06:34I didn't think, like, oh, wow, it's really going well for me or anything like that.
06:38It's just, I think when I looked up once or twice during the game and went, oh, wow, man, we're having a good game.
06:44I'm 12 or 15 or something, and that's maybe it crosses your mind just for a second.
06:50But, geez, I'm just, like I said, just thinking about the game, not worrying about the crowd, anything we do, just trying to execute.
06:59And, you know, I always say this to people all the time, I wish I'd have been that relaxed in my whole career.
07:06But the reason that day was probably the least, I didn't feel any nerves or anything.
07:11We had played so well at the end of the year, and we practiced, we practiced hard, but we practiced so great that I just had, you know, nothing but good thoughts going into the game.
07:23I did notice that you seemed to have an idea of who exactly you wanted to go to when you were behind center on every pass play.
07:32That was your first option, and you were going to get to the board of that first option, and you felt confident that that first option would be open.
07:38Is that accurate? Is that true?
07:40That's a really good, yeah, Chris, you're exactly right.
07:43Ron Earhart, who never got the attention and the credit he deserved, he had it mapped out for each situation what was going to work.
07:51And I would say one, two, three, maybe that whole first drive.
07:56There were some where I could choose which one I liked, but everything that they designed in almost every play went to the first option.
08:05Sometimes I had to look somebody up and get them open, but really well thought out first drive of the game, and really well called by Ron Earhart.
08:15What Chris is talking about is you're so decisive, and you're so comfortable.
08:19What was it about the atmosphere, Phil?
08:21Like, you guys come from North Jersey playing these home playoff games in front of your own fans, and the weather and the condition.
08:27And now here you are in Pasadena, and you have this body language that's so relaxed.
08:31What was the cause of that?
08:34Hey, Kyle and Chris, I kid you not.
08:38I was so excited just the fact that we were going to get to play on grass in warm weather.
08:42Man, that's the turf and dying stadium, cold, windy games.
08:47I mean, I've run out for the field, the championship game against Washington, and we got 40-mile-an-hour wins.
08:53I've dreamed my whole life about playing in these big games, and here I am doing it in 40-mile-an-hour wins.
08:59So what we got here, a draw play, which we were a great draw team with Joe Morris, with Maurice Carthen blocking,
09:07and that was just really to set up to give us a better chance on third down.
09:11And I like this first call coming up, if it's there.
09:15It was, we go against the grain of what we usually did.
09:19We ran so many in-cuts, deep in-cuts by the wide receivers, the Broncos must have had a read on it big time.
09:27They were playing that and nothing else, and we had a little changeup that day to it,
09:33and that's why this next play, you're going to see Stacey Robinson.
09:35Yeah, here it is.
09:36He's wide open and makes an easy catch.
09:39So you watch their defense.
09:41Let's see, yeah.
09:42I knew I was going to go backside and look at the coverage,
09:45because they were expecting him to run across the field.
09:49And that's what you get when you get two weeks to get a game plan that you hope is going to work.
09:55You just can not overthink it, but really be on top of all these kind of situations and make it work.
10:01Did you want to pick on Louie Wright at all, or is he too good?
10:04Did you have anybody you wanted to pick on from an offensive standpoint, Phil, or no?
10:08No, no.
10:08You know, I can't even remember saying anything that we would pick on anybody.
10:13So we were just going to run our offense and let their defense tell us what to do as we go along.
10:19So it was, hey, look, they had some good players on defense, Chris and Kyle, and it wasn't easy.
10:26It might look easy, but it wasn't.
10:28I mean, you know, I had to thread footballs in some really tight spots in the game.
10:33Guys had to make some good catches and use their body, especially Mark Bavaro.
10:37I mean, you know, Mark Bavaro could spread it out, and it was hard to get around him.
10:42And, you know, he was great at that.
10:45I'm going to say he caught two or three balls like that during the game just because of his size.
10:48Matt Dogg, for the young people who might not know, tell us your impressions of Mark Bavaro back in the day.
10:54He was, well, the best one, Kyle and Phil will tell you, is the game in San Francisco late in the year
11:01when he took about 50 defensive backs, and he had an incredible game on a Monday night in San Francisco.
11:07And he had, I don't know, it wasn't a touchdown.
11:11Is this a touchdown pass to Mowat?
11:13No, this is down near the goal line there.
11:15That's Bavaro.
11:16On second and 10 from the fifth.
11:19Over the middle to Bavaro.
11:21And the tight end fights his way inside the 30.
11:25And a single effort to the 18-yard line.
11:29A solitary effort by Bavaro, who made some 12 extra yards totally on his own.
11:35But that game he had in San Francisco, Phil, even before Kyle's time, I'd have to go look at the statistics.
11:42But that is a game that everybody saw of Bavaro and saw how great he was because of his physicality.
11:50A little bit like Blankowski.
11:51I mean, a little bit like the latter-day Blankowski with his finesse catching the ball and the physicality.
11:57How about that? Go ahead.
11:58Well, when you watch that last play he catches, it was our signature play on the offense at throwing the football.
12:04It was scene patterns down the field.
12:07And actually, Mark Bavaro ran the wrong route there.
12:09He should have stayed outside.
12:11As I was throwing the ball, I saw him make just that little move inside.
12:15And that was a good example.
12:16He used his body to keep you away from it.
12:18There you go.
12:19Bam.
12:19We would not be doing our jobs if we didn't quickly hear from the broadcasters of this Super Bowl.
12:24Well, let's toss to the late great John Madden breaking down Phil's touchdown pass.
12:30Phil Simms is over there in the sideline talking about that touchdown and about how he got it.
12:36Watch for his motion.
12:37Here's Zeke Mowat.
12:38He's going to come across the field in motion.
12:41Now, the Broncos, this guy's covering him.
12:43When he goes in motion, this guy's switching.
12:45Mowat comes up.
12:47Boom.
12:47Beats him here.
12:48Catching the ball for a touchdown.
12:50Watch him there.
12:51He starts there.
12:52Comes across.
12:53See the switch in the Bronco defense.
12:54Then up and in and touchdown.
12:57You need a quarterback to win three or four games for you.
12:59You're going to have a great year.
13:01And Phil was able to do that.
13:02I'm not trying to piss him in the rear end here.
13:04But, you know, playing in cold weather.
13:06A defensive early inning coach.
13:08Tough comp.
13:09Tough division.
13:10Run the ball a lot.
13:11He had those great suburban offensive linemen with Morris.
13:16Phil didn't get a chance to shine too much.
13:18But you knew when they needed him, you knew that he was going to be able to bring it down to the field and make big plays.
13:25And this game was a perfect example.
13:27That's why Sam should be in the Hall of Fame.
13:30He doesn't get the credit that he deserves because he played in the defensive-oriented team, which is tricky.
13:35We have this fun dynamic here, guys, where Mad Dog and I just want to talk about you, Phil.
13:39And Phil just wants to talk about the defense.
13:40When we come back, Phil's going to win.
13:42We're talking about the big, blue, wrecking crew.
13:45The Giants led by the best defensive player of all time.
13:47The best defensive mind of all time.
13:50They take the field against number seven, John Elway, and the Broncos.
13:53Stay with us.
14:05Welcome back to After Further Review.
14:07We are watching Super Bowl XXI in January of 1987 with Phil Simms and my man Christopher, Mad Dog Russo.
14:14This is a really fun visual from this game.
14:16That, my friends, is Bill Belichick working the marker board as the defensive coordinator of the Giants.
14:21He's going to win his first of eight rings.
14:24Phil, what are your memories of Coach Belichick being over on the other side of the ball?
14:29Oh, well, a lot of good memories.
14:31Of course, I love the way he coached the defense.
14:33And every once in a while when I was struggling, I would give him credit.
14:36He'd come by and just take me for about 20 seconds and say some really nice things to me, how much he believed.
14:42It was really, to hear it from him, you know, it just added something to it and made me feel a lot better.
14:49But, yeah, practice, all that, I mean, come on, we practiced against this defense all year.
14:55And, well, for many years.
14:57And, of course, after so long, it's hard to beat them when they see it every day.
15:01But Bill was, you know, I don't think any of us ever looked at it and said Bill's going to be a great head coach.
15:07But I think we all knew on both sides of the football how good he really was.
15:12Did, I know Bill was a, Parcells was a defensive coach.
15:15Did Bill let Belichick coach the defense the way Bill wanted to coach the defense, Bill?
15:19Did it work that way or not?
15:21Belichick, you know, offense and defense.
15:24The coordinators got to call the games.
15:26But every once in a while, I would hear, you know, I could hear him yelling at Ronnie,
15:31run the ball, run the ball, or whatever.
15:33I'm out on the field.
15:34I can read his lips.
15:35And then every once in a while, I'd be on the sideline next to Bill and Bill Parcells.
15:40And some of the things he would say to Bill Belichick, I can't say I'm here, but damn, they were funny.
15:47Third and 12.
15:52No way, he wants somebody to move.
15:55Motions in that direction, back to throw.
15:59He's out of the pocket.
16:01No question about his arm, and he's got a man.
16:04Arm strength is ridiculous, Mad Dog.
16:07Tell the kids about Deano in this era.
16:09Not later, when he was winning.
16:10I'm talking about when he would show up to the Super Bowl almost every year and lose.
16:13Yeah, 100%.
16:14Took him a little while to get his career going.
16:16This is a great play, Phil.
16:17You can talk about Elway on the run, running a little left.
16:20And he's got Vance Johnson down there.
16:23And he's open, too.
16:24I don't know if you want to quote this.
16:26Is this a set play, Phil, what Denver's trying to do here?
16:28Or is this sort of a broken play?
16:29How did this play work?
16:30It's a set play, and he moved.
16:33And, you know, they loved this throw where he would move one way and throw it to the other.
16:38Run right, throw it left.
16:40You know, run left, throw it right.
16:41And they were good.
16:42They would try these type of plays, two or three of them, every single game.
16:46And it was amazing how often it worked for them, too.
16:49Because you know they're going to do it.
16:51You've got your defensive backs way back.
16:53But Elway could throw it hard and far, and it just made it tough for DBs to react to it.
16:59You know, back to Kyle.
17:01There's a little screen there.
17:03You know, back to Kyle.
17:04Remember, everybody was sort of rooting against Elway back in 83 when he was drafted
17:10because he was difficult on draft day because he didn't want to go to the Colts.
17:13And he was going to go play baseball for Steinbrenner up on Elmira in New York.
17:17And he was never going to be a great baseball player.
17:19But he did not want to play for Ursae.
17:21Did not want to play for Baltimore.
17:22So I think, Phil, and you were already in the league,
17:25I think the media and the fans kind of wanted to root against him.
17:29Because in those days, players were supposed to play where they were drafted.
17:33They were not supposed to dictate, well, I'm not going there.
17:35I'm going to play here.
17:36You know, that occurred a little later on.
17:39Elway was the first to do that.
17:40So I think there was a little animosity towards Elway.
17:42I think some fans kind of wanted to see him fall on his face.
17:46But that Browns game, Phil, that you referred to, the 98-yard drive game,
17:50I mean, you know, he took in cold weather against a good defense.
17:54He went 98 yards.
17:55And that didn't win the game.
17:56That just forced overtime.
17:58But he did that in an incredible spot.
18:00And I think that is when we began to think.
18:02It was only two weeks before this game.
18:04That's, Phil, when we began to think, wow, now I get it.
18:06This guy is going to be a tremendous, tremendous quarterback in the NFL.
18:10Phil, I want to read you a quote.
18:12I want to read you a quote of yourself, Phil.
18:15This is about you discussing the comparisons between you and John Elway.
18:19You said, quote, I know I'm not pretty or exciting.
18:22I'm not flashy like Elway.
18:23I'm just a lunch pail kind of guy.
18:25He's the real thing.
18:26He's pretty.
18:27I'm always going to get criticized.
18:29I'll always get that because I'm not pretty.
18:31That sounds like you, Phil.
18:34Yeah, that's pretty drastic.
18:35I didn't know I said it quite that way, but I believe it.
18:38Yeah, I said a lot of things.
18:39I look back and go, damn, why did I say that?
18:41At this time of the game, as I'm watching this, I'm going,
18:45yeah, he's going on our defense, man.
18:46Let's stop him.
18:47You know, they're moving the ball a wheel on.
18:49But, yeah, John Elway, you know, all week long,
18:52I got questions in the Super Bowl.
18:53What about this?
18:54And they said, what would you have done if John Elway came to Moorhead State?
18:58And I said, well, he'd sit on the bench until I graduated.
19:01I said, and it didn't make big news, which it would now.
19:05But I thought it was a pretty good quote.
19:07And I kind of wanted to tell everybody, let's ease up on this quarterback thing
19:12just a little bit.
19:13But John was a great player.
19:15I never probably gave him the credit he deserved as I was playing against him
19:18in his years.
19:20But once I became an announcer, I remember going to practice going,
19:23damn, he can really throw it.
19:25Just when you get to see him not playing against him,
19:28not behind him watching practice.
19:30I mean, he was a special talent, no doubt.
19:32And I remember there, too, Kyle, for the folks who don't know as much about
19:36early part of his career, when they got to the Super Bowl,
19:38they were always outclassed.
19:40The Giants were better.
19:41Washington had Doug Williams.
19:43They were better.
19:44And obviously the Niners with Montana in 1990, they were better.
19:48So he had some rough stretches in the Super Bowl.
19:52And a lot of people thought, you know, he couldn't win the big one.
19:54Bradshaw used to get all over him all the time.
19:57And I remember Bradshaw came on radio,
19:59sat with Mike Francesca, myself, once.
20:01He killed that way.
20:02That was the 90 game in New Orleans.
20:05And I think a lot of people were a little down on him.
20:07And it wasn't until a little later in his career when he finally won one,
20:10when he beat the Packers and he beat Atlanta,
20:13where you realize how great he really was.
20:14We all knew he was great, but he had a lot of trouble in these games
20:17because, Philly, you know the Giants are better than the Broncos.
20:20They were favored by 10 points, so we need to know.
20:22This is a better football team than the Broncos were here in 86.
20:26Don't you agree?
20:27Yeah, I do agree.
20:28Listen, I never looked at them and all those big games going,
20:32oh, John Elway let them down.
20:34I mean, first off, he got them there.
20:37And, you know, the circumstances,
20:39hey, sometimes circumstances are too tough for even a great quarterback to overcome.
20:44And he was trying against us this day, everything.
20:47But, yeah, John, there's no doubt.
20:49His talent was great.
20:50And he proved it to everybody before his career was over.
20:53He could win big games, too.
20:54You know, Phil, we haven't talked about LT much.
20:56What do you remember about Lawrence Taylor this week and this game?
21:00And then, Matt, Doug, I'd love your thoughts on LT as well.
21:02Well, you know, a lot of things.
21:04I mean, just to be a little funny at first, we'd get on the bus every morning to go to practice.
21:09And they'd all be telling stories, Lawrence.
21:12Yeah, we did this.
21:12We did that.
21:13And, you know, half the team was with him.
21:15And I go, and I would laugh, you know, because it was funny, some of the stuff they were doing.
21:20And I go, oh, my gosh, we're going to lose.
21:23Because you guys are just too late.
21:25And he goes, oh, Sims, don't even worry.
21:29Denver's worse than us.
21:30And it really, for some reason, I went, well, it does make it a little bit better.
21:36But it was really interesting the whole week.
21:39And Lawrence, you know, Lawrence didn't have a great game here because they were so focused on him.
21:44Yeah.
21:44And I'm big into this, Kyle and Chris.
21:47We need to start giving defensive MVPs of Super Bowls.
21:52Carl Banks was unbelievable in this game.
21:57I mean, unbelievable.
21:59You know, just everything.
22:01Tackling, being in the right spot, knowing they're all.
22:04Carl was, he's one of the most underrated linebackers in the history of the NFL.
22:08100% though.
22:09He's overshadowed by Carson and L.T.
22:14I'll give you two on L.T.
22:15And Phil knows both.
22:17Once Dave Anderson, it was either, I don't know if it was his first ever NFL game,
22:21but it was early in his career.
22:23And Dave Anderson, the great pull-up surprise winner for the New York Times at the game.
22:27And his headline the next day in the Times on the Monday Sports Faction was Lawrence of Arabia,
22:33which I, you know, you remember that, Phil?
22:34That great headline, Lawrence of Arabia.
22:36And the other thing that you don't realize, it's always, you think of the Bears in the late 60s.
22:41They had Futchis and Gale Sayers.
22:43And in their rookie year, they were 1-13.
22:46Now, there was a year with Lawrence Taylor and Phil, he may have been hurt.
22:50The Giants went 3-12-1.
22:52You say to yourself, how the hell did the Giants with Lawrence Taylor only win three games?
22:58Phil, explain that for me, please.
22:59Let me hear you.
23:00Hey, listen.
23:01That saved my career.
23:04That was 19, it did.
23:061983, I got hurt.
23:09The team completely fell apart.
23:11They tried to replace Bill Parcells.
23:13They couldn't find anybody to take the job.
23:16I'll never forget that offseason.
23:18I've been working out.
23:19He's talking to me.
23:20He goes, Sims, I'm going to tell you what.
23:22If I survive this, because they were still looking for a coach, he goes, we're going to do it my way.
23:28And that's when he turned into who he really is.
23:31In 1984, he was a different coach than he was in 1983.
23:35In the meantime, we have Rich Carless missing a 24-yard field goal, kicking barefooted.
23:42And Stan Reeves looks on, wearing a full suit.
23:45This is incredible 80s aesthetics here, Mad Dog.
23:49The suit, the barefoot kicker, and the huge shake.
23:51And you're right.
23:52That's a big missed field goal, Phil.
23:54Well, it's an emotional lift for us.
23:56And, of course, it's just the opposite for them.
23:59I mean, man, you know, as a team, as a coach, as a quarterback, when you drive the football team down the field, and you have tip-shot field goals, and you miss them, you're like, it's just so demoralizing.
24:12And it happened to, you know, all quarterbacks who stand up and go, we just had an 80-yard drive, and we got no points out of it.
24:18And I'm sure they kind of felt that way.
24:20And I just remember going, wow, we're getting some breaks here.
24:23All right, all right, enough about the defense.
24:25Mad Dog and I are going to talk about you.
24:28Because you go unconscious in the second half.
24:31We relive one of the greatest second halves in a Super Bowl performance ever.
24:35Do not go anywhere.
24:47Welcome back.
24:48We're about to start the second half.
24:49The Giants sacked Elway in the end zone for a safety.
24:51So now they're down 10-9.
24:53And Mad Dog was saying in commercial break, this reputation of this game is the Giants just destroyed them.
24:58Not true at all.
24:59The Denver Broncos were really, really tough in the first half.
25:02Not a great half by you guys, Phil.
25:04So we all want to know, what does Parcells say at halftime?
25:08Is he throwing chairs?
25:09Is he screaming?
25:09What's it like in the locker room?
25:11Okay.
25:12Here he was.
25:13Once everybody's settled down, it's a long halftime.
25:16Everybody's relaxed.
25:17I don't know if I fell asleep.
25:19I could have.
25:19But I was just leaning against the wall.
25:20Well, not worrying.
25:22And Bill Parcells got up and said, all right, man, we've worked hard.
25:26We've got 30 minutes.
25:27Let's go.
25:27That was it.
25:29Bill was not a speech giver like that.
25:31He didn't believe in, let's get all riled up.
25:33Because what does that do?
25:35We run out.
25:36We hit somebody.
25:36Now we're back to nothing.
25:38Well, we have a long halftime show.
25:40You would think it's 1987.
25:42You got Lionel Richie, Madonna, Duran Duran.
25:45Just pick one.
25:46You can't be wrong.
25:47They marched out Mickey Rooney and George Burns for a salute to Hollywood's 100th anniversary.
25:53Ridiculous show.
25:54All due respect to the greats.
25:561987, you can't miss with a pop star, Mad Dog.
25:59I don't know how we got that.
26:01That's a good point.
26:02I didn't know that.
26:03Wow.
26:04And they got the ball at the start of the second half.
26:07And this is Phil handing the ball off here.
26:11This was the play.
26:13Was that the first play of the second half?
26:15Because I know this drive is an important drive, Phil.
26:16We've got to go for it on fourth down.
26:18And they were smart.
26:20That was just a runoff tackle out of an eye formation, which we usually threw out of a line.
26:27So, yeah.
26:27And Carl Mecklenburg, I remember this very well.
26:30Man, he was a good player.
26:31And they did a great job of putting him in position to make plays.
26:35And you can see it by that graphic, which is incredible.
26:37It's a great graphic.
26:39Mecklenburg was like the T.J. Watt of 1987.
26:42Yes, he was.
26:43You know, I'm just thinking of the game.
26:45And I'm just going, okay, we'll be okay.
26:47It's third and short.
26:48We'll pick up the first down.
26:50And we didn't.
26:52And then it turns into third and three.
26:55Okay.
26:56Should have thrown the ball.
26:57Instead, we ran it.
26:58But look at this tackle.
26:59Oh, my gosh.
27:01Denver's defense was fast.
27:03And, man, Ricky Hundley, he wasn't in on that play.
27:06A linebacker for them.
27:07He was unbelievable in the game.
27:09But now we're faced with fourth and about two or three feet.
27:14But watch the speed.
27:16That's what they were.
27:16They were a fast team.
27:18And look at the defenders, the secondary, making plays.
27:22Phil, this reminds me, years later, John Elway getting helicoptered against the Packers.
27:26It almost looks like that same type of tackle.
27:28And you're almost a full yard short.
27:30So, what happens, Phil?
27:32Well, you know, I didn't know.
27:34There we go.
27:35But once I got to the sideline, I realized we were going to run this play.
27:39And it was called Arapahoe.
27:41A run, a pass, a hit on the enemy.
27:44And Jeff Rutledge had to determine what we were going to do.
27:49And there was like six, seven different plays out of this formation.
27:55And he had to determine if nobody's over the guards, which they made a big mistake and didn't do it,
28:01that he was probably going to run the quarterback's knee.
28:03And as you look at this, you'll see the right guard.
28:09Here we go.
28:11Denver said, they told me, they were supposed to all move up, and the linebackers didn't.
28:16Look over the right guard.
28:17There's nobody there.
28:18And I'm sure this scared him when we put Sean Lendetta in motion.
28:24That's so.
28:25Yeah.
28:27And I'll tell you, but this is the only play that Rutledge plays, and he's got an executor.
28:31I mean, think about it.
28:32He's only got one play.
28:34I know it's the quarterback's knee.
28:35It's pretty basic.
28:37That's the only play that he had to handle.
28:38And you could make an argument that might be the biggest play of the game.
28:42Is that correct?
28:43Oh, it was huge.
28:44I don't know if it's the biggest, but it was close to that.
28:48They've been able to give them great field position, us not stopping them the way we want it on defense.
28:53Yeah, it was huge.
28:55But, again, I'm kind of saying.
28:56Phil, let me ask you.
28:56Phil, Peyton Manning has famously said he hates trick plays.
29:01He wants the ball.
29:02You're unconscious in this game.
29:03You can't miss.
29:05Was there any party that says this fourth down, give me the ball.
29:07I can get us the first down.
29:09No, I wasn't thinking like that until I saw that we were going to do this, you know, go for it on fourth down.
29:17But, like I said, we had so many options there, and with them going in, the defense is not really alerted that we might go for it.
29:24So we caught them by surprise a little bit.
29:26They did make a mistake by not getting up there closer to Jeff Rutledge, but it worked out really well for us, that's for sure.
29:33There's a nice little move, and you found them wide.
29:37Oh, boy, that's a nice play right there.
29:39Phil, hey, you moved your feet for a change.
29:41You moved left, and you found Morris there for a 12-yard play.
29:45That's a good play right there for Phil.
29:46Coverage was great.
29:49Joe Morris, yep.
29:50Joe can do it all.
29:52Tough as hell.
29:52Man, was he tough.
29:53And, man, did we ride his.
29:55Oh.
29:56We're in a great year.
29:58We're in a great year.
30:00Oh, here we go.
30:01Here's what I've been talking about.
30:02This is a seat pass.
30:04Bavaral to the right.
30:05The running back up on top is Lee Roussani.
30:07Cheated up.
30:08Yep.
30:08I looked right.
30:09I knew I was going to go to him.
30:10I threw a little back shoulder.
30:12I mean, that was our number one play of the year, those type of plays.
30:17And you're going to see Madden here, Phil, basically do the seam stuff,
30:20because he's going to show you what the two players did.
30:23Watch, John.
30:24Listen.
30:25He did the wrong thing.
30:26It's about Bavaral to the right and Lee Roussani to the left.
30:31I'm sorry, John.
30:34Sorry, Coach.
30:35I think we all know this.
30:36When you're in athletics, you get so many opportunities,
30:40and, you know, they had to be thinking at halftime,
30:42oh, my gosh, we blew a lot of opportunities in the first half.
30:46And the second half, they really didn't get any.
30:49I love this play.
30:51Switch him, Bavaral, then he comes under.
30:55They were trying to stop exactly that play,
30:58but they messed it up because of how they changed down the field.
31:02And, of course, throwing to Mark Bavaral, it's always a good thing.
31:07Phil, Mad Dog was comparing Bavaral to, he was comparing Bavaral to Gronk earlier in the show,
31:13I think perfectly in terms of a player, but wildly different personality than Gronk.
31:18Am I right?
31:19Oh, yeah.
31:20Mark was very quiet.
31:21I mean, for real.
31:22Phil, but, man, he was a great blocker, and he had hands like catcher's mitts,
31:27so you couldn't, if it was near him, he was going to catch it.
31:30He took the lead here, Phil.
31:31You had to feel pretty good.
31:32Yeah, long halftime.
31:34Now you got your 16-10.
31:36You got the first lead of the game.
31:38Your team feels right now, as you said, it was a good point you made.
31:42Denver left points on the board.
31:43Safety, missed field goal.
31:45Had some chances.
31:47You guys, look at Phil.
31:48Look at all young years.
31:49My God.
31:52Mad Dog and I are going to keep hyping you in the next segment because Phil just cannot miss.
31:58The Broncos are starting to feel the game slipping away.
32:00Can they come back?
32:02Plus, a Super Bowl first.
32:04You do not want to miss it.
32:05Welcome back.
32:16We're watching the third quarter of Super Bowl XXI here with my guys, Phil Simms and Mad Dog.
32:21As you can see, the crowd there at the Rose Bowl in that beautiful 1987 font.
32:27It's gorgeous.
32:27Mad Dog, you're doing your show the next day.
32:30Are you starting to formulate your open, what your comments are going to be about this game at this point,
32:34or is it still too early?
32:35Well, you know, I wasn't in New York yet.
32:39I was, this was in 86.
32:42The Giants and the Mets won four months apart.
32:46The Mets won 86, and then in October beat the Red Sox, and the Giants won this game.
32:52And because of that is the reason why WFAN began.
32:56This was an incredible, impactful period in New York sports where everybody wanted to do sports talk.
33:03AEW did sports talk.
33:06WNBC did sports talk.
33:08Art Ross did sports talk on ABC.
33:11And it was the first team, let's do sports all day.
33:16And so Phil's performance here, the Giants winning four months after the Mets winning,
33:21really led in a lot of ways to the formation of what you see today of the predominance of sports,
33:28which is probably not, is the predominance of nothing but sports talk.
33:32I came up to New York to do some interviews at WMCA a month after this game.
33:38And I got hired in MCA about a month later.
33:42And remember, FAN began in July.
33:45So the Mets win in October.
33:47Phil wins in late January.
33:50And then four months later, it's 24-7 sports talk.
33:53And the Giants and Mets are the reason for that.
33:55Yeah, that was really interesting.
33:57I remember it starting, Chris and Kyle, and going, there's no way this is going to work.
34:01You can't talk about sports the whole day.
34:04Phil, you knew here, you got a chance to put the hammer down, right?
34:07But you know right now, 19-10, you're in their territory.
34:10You feel pretty good about where you are right now as a team, right, in this game?
34:13Well, when we, yes, the flea flicker, when we called this play, I said, this is going to end the game.
34:19And it did, to me.
34:22When Phil McConkie, he was wide open.
34:25When he caught it and he got down to the one, I said, we've won the Super Bowl.
34:30There's no way Denver can come back from this deficit and make it a game.
34:35And McConkie's mad because all he talked about the whole week, I want to catch a touchdown pass.
34:41You know, but he was a great inspiration to our team, Phil McConkie.
34:46And high energy, return punts, tough as hell.
34:53Oh, he came all the way across.
34:54The reaction is hilarious because he thinks he's going to score right here.
34:57He's going to be in the commercial and then, no!
35:02And you're right, Phil, he is wide open, my goodness.
35:05You had to have to play for it.
35:07I could have thrown that one for crying out loud.
35:10Yes, go ahead.
35:11Don't get carried away.
35:13Yeah, good blocking there.
35:14But you know what?
35:15I probably ran that flea flicker.
35:17It was the same one every time.
35:19I'm just going to say 15 times in my career.
35:22And I hit the same receiver, same spot every single time.
35:26Never got to anybody else except that crosser who was in motion or wherever we put him.
35:31And, yeah, that was a big moment, that touchdown.
35:36Well, what's Parcells say?
35:37Why is he screaming at you?
35:38What's Bill yet?
35:38Yeah, geez.
35:39Quit celebrating.
35:40The game's not over.
35:41That's what he's saying.
35:44Well, you are now 8 for 8 in the second half.
35:47You would not throw another incompletion in the game.
35:49You end 22 at 25.
35:51Highest completion percentage in Super Bowl history.
35:53And wouldn't you know it, you are awarded the Sports Illustrated cover in a time when that was extremely meaningful.
36:00As a kid, I had it on my wall.
36:01Let's look at the cover, Phil.
36:03What is it like to look at that?
36:04Well, here's what I see in it.
36:07Look at my right leg.
36:10They took it down and twisted.
36:12Thank God I was young then because it didn't bother me until the next day.
36:16But here's what I remember about it.
36:18It was my first incompletion.
36:20But Stacey Robinson was wide open for about a short throw.
36:24And I couldn't quite get it there because I'm not sure who had my leg.
36:29It's not Mecklenburg or Rulon Jones, but whatever.
36:32Mecklenburg, yeah, it is.
36:34It is.
36:34I bounced it out there.
36:36And one of their players said after the game, he said, yeah, we were trying to take him out, but we didn't get it done.
36:41And so.
36:42Hey, that would be a penalty today, wouldn't it, Kyle?
36:45He'd get a 58-yard penalty for tackling low.
36:47Isn't it a penalty?
36:48It's an ejection.
36:49You're out of here.
36:50Get out of here.
36:51It's a shower.
36:51Oh, my God.
36:52Oh, my God.
36:55Here's the play, Phil.
36:57Oh, yeah, there you go.
36:58Oh, wide open, Phil.
36:59How'd you miss that?
37:00Jeez, he's wide open for crying out loud.
37:02How'd you miss that one?
37:03I'm that dark.
37:04Because I had this animal holding my leg.
37:07Oh, oh, look at that.
37:09Oh, that's dirty.
37:10Oh, my God.
37:12Phil, that's that.
37:12What was that?
37:13Oh, my goodness.
37:14I told you.
37:15They told me or somebody said to me that Denver was on the sideline and said, look, if you get a chance, let's take him out.
37:22And I go, wow, they said that.
37:24That is awesome.
37:25They thought that highly of me.
37:27And, you know, so, hey, that's part of the game, man.
37:30We bust a lot of chops here, Phil.
37:31I think it's very funny.
37:33It was the greatest Super Bowl ever played.
37:34And the worst throw of the game by far by you is on the SI cover.
37:38That's the one that they chose to immortalize permanently.
37:42Well, this game keeps on giving, guys.
37:45What if I were to tell you in the next segment we're going to see an iconic New York Giant go into disguise to attack his own coach and start one of the most cherished traditions in NFL history?
37:54I would be telling the truth.
37:55Don't go anywhere.
37:57This is an incredible finale.
37:58We discuss it all when we return with the guys.
38:00There's we see the buckets.
38:13Now there's a third bucket this week.
38:15I think what happened, there's always been, yeah, there's always been like a mother and father.
38:20Like this is a father bucket.
38:22This is a mother bucket.
38:24And since the last game, they had a baby bucket.
38:27So this is a baby bucket.
38:29So they got three now.
38:30There's always been two.
38:32One's going to go to Parcells.
38:34One's going to go to another assistant.
38:36And one will go to a player later in the game.
38:40Unbelievable.
38:41Only Madden could.
38:44That's why Madden's Madden.
38:45He hit it right there.
38:47He's doing it.
38:47It's like a chicken.
38:48It's like a turkey on Thanksgiving.
38:49I mean, here it is.
38:51He's talking about father and mother buckets, for crying out loud, at the Super Bowl.
38:55It also tells you the game is 39-20.
38:57And there's nothing to talk about.
38:58So I got to have something fun here with the buckets.
39:01I had not seen that before, Phil, with the two buckets.
39:05I do know that you threw the Gatorade on Parcells.
39:08But I didn't know that Madden made a big deal about it.
39:09Yeah.
39:10Once it became kind of our calling card at the game after we won, is that it was every week,
39:16no matter who was doing the game, if we were ahead, they'd put that camera on Harry Carson
39:22and Harry would deliver.
39:24So you're not going to believe this if you've never seen this.
39:26Harry knows that they're looking for him and that maybe Parcells is looking over his shoulder.
39:30So this man, a legendary giant, gets a jacket from someone on the security squad, we don't
39:35even know who, and is incognito like Bobby Valentine in the dugout with a mustache and
39:41sneaks up on Parcells and it works.
39:43Watch.
39:44Boom.
39:46Oh, man.
39:46It's an incredible caper.
39:48Yeah, it was good.
39:50Yep.
39:50Harry was into it.
39:51That's for sure.
39:51He loved it.
39:54We should spend a second on Carson, Phil.
39:56He was there a long time.
39:58South Carolina State.
39:59He's a Hall of Famer.
40:00We talked about Banks and LT, but he was the first of the most great giant landbackers
40:05in the mid-70s.
40:06And I was finally glad he got in the Hall of Fame, but he was a hell of a player.
40:09Big inspiration for that team.
40:10How about that for a sec?
40:11Let me hear.
40:12Oh, yeah, he was.
40:12He was part of one of the greatest, I guess you'd say, groups in history, really.
40:17When you talk about him, Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks and Gary Reed, we had so many good
40:23linebackers, it was ridiculous.
40:24But Harry, you're right.
40:25He went through some brutal times with the Giants and he hung in there.
40:29And I think in 1984, when he saw it turning around, he just became a different guy with
40:34the football team, too.
40:35Great leader, you know, worked hard on and off the field, just practiced.
40:42He was just a big-time pro and kind of cool to see guys that go through it.
40:46It's so rough that finally win a Super Bowl.
40:50All right.
40:50Well, I hope the security agent got his jersey if he gave up the jacket.
40:55In the meantime, Gary Kubiak is the backup for Denver.
40:58They put him in at the end.
40:59Now, Coach Kubiak went on to have huge success as a coach, as you know.
41:02But he comes in for one last snap and just got pummeled.
41:05And then the celebration begins.
41:08The Giants are going to swallow him up.
41:09And then, you know, we've talked a lot about how influential this team was, things they started
41:13with not just the defense, but the Gatorade shower.
41:16We also saw them carry off a coach.
41:18Now, the year before, the Bears did this with Ditka and Buddy Ryan.
41:21But, Mad Dog, you just don't see this in the modern NFL.
41:24They don't carry off Nick Sirianni when the Eagles win.
41:28You know, 100%.
41:29They did carry off Madden 10 years before that.
41:33So, when he won his one against Minnesota.
41:36And then, I know Ditka didn't like the fact that they also took Ryan off because, you know,
41:40he wants the head coach to be taken off.
41:42But there is Bill.
41:44It was at Spard Oates, isn't it?
41:45Who was that there?
41:46Oh, it was that Brad Benson.
41:47Isn't that Phil right there carrying him off?
41:49Yes.
41:50You guys are right.
41:51I love the fact picking up the coach and carrying him across the field.
41:56It should be automatic.
41:58Great tradition.
41:59And you're right.
42:00Can you imagine them picking up Andy Reid and taking him across?
42:02That would be awesome.
42:06You know, it would have to be the whole offensive line.
42:08Yes.
42:09I know it's Pepper Johnson and William Roberts.
42:11You know, I don't think in Super Bowl I, they didn't usher Lombardi off the field when
42:17they beat Kansas City because everybody thought the Packers would win.
42:21But in Super Bowl II, Jerry Kramer, Jerry Kramer took Lombardi off the field in Super Bowl II.
42:26They knew it was Lombardi's last game.
42:28Kyle and Chris, the ride home, all you do is sit there in your seat.
42:32It was kind of quiet at times because everybody's sitting there thinking about, we did it.
42:38Guys, that is Super Bowl XXI.
42:40Phil Simms, the MVP, absolute majesty.
42:43Guys, incredible to have you here.
42:45This was so much fun.
42:46I'm truly honored that both of you showed up for this.
42:48Thank you very much.
42:50Kyle, I enjoyed it.
42:51Phil's the star.
42:52Phil's the star.
42:52Not me.
42:53That's Phil.
42:53Chris, you're the man.
42:57I love you.
42:58So, it was great doing this with you.
43:00I just, thank you.
43:01Brings back a lot of good memories.
43:03I'm going to feel good the rest of the day, that's for sure.
43:05There you go.
43:05There you go.
43:06Thanks, Kyle.
43:07See you next time.
43:07See you again.
43:07See you next time.
