04:12A young boy who was 15, he was riding home
04:16As he travelled along Bracknell Avenue in Kirby
04:20He was struck by a vehicle which was travelling towards him at very high speed
04:27He was catapulted from his bike to stay in serious life-threatening injuries
04:33And the driver fled the scene
04:36He was treated at the scene by the ambulance service who took him to the local trauma centre
04:45Please don't be dead
04:52Please don't be dead
04:55When I got to the hospital, there he was
05:00Just lying there with all the monitors on
05:08At first, it was expected that he wouldn't survive his injuries due to their extent
05:15He had a brain injury, abdomen, chest, limb injuries
05:20Seeing his foot changing colour
05:25Because the blood flow wasn't there
05:30There was a vascular surgeon coming over to sort out his leg
05:35To try and fix it
05:37And that didn't work
05:39And then it was
05:43You can't save his leg
05:47We were going to have to amputate
05:51Despite treatment, the victim had to have his leg amputated
06:00He was in a coma for a couple of days
06:04He remained in hospital for a number of months after the collision
06:08The area itself where the collision occurred is residential
06:30There's schools nearby, community centres
06:32Our forensic collision investigators identified that the vehicle which struck the victim
06:40Was travelling in excess of 70 miles an hour
06:43There's no reason why somebody would be travelling at such a speed
06:51Dashcam footage from a passing vehicle was provided to us
06:57Of the collision on the evening
06:59The vehicle is a 2018 plate, dark silver Honda Civic
07:06A very distinctive lighting both to the front and the rear of the vehicle
07:10And also from the scene, there's a front registration plate
07:15The license plate detached from the car that struck the young cyclist
07:21And was discovered to be false
07:23Despite that, officers were still able to trace the vehicle's movements
07:27Information was provided to us that the vehicle involved in the collision
07:32Was stolen during the burglary at the beginning of the month
07:35On the 8th of December, a number of offenders have attended Johnson's Skoda
07:42Car dealership in Wigan
07:44A number of vehicles were taken, including the Honda Civic
07:47On the 18th of December, the car was spotted by police in Greater Manchester
07:54But disappeared after they gave chase
07:56After the collision, we believe that it left the Merseyside area shortly after
08:02And there were no other sightings of the vehicle
08:05Until the 28th of December
08:08When a vehicle matching that description was sighted by an officer
08:12In the Greater Manchester area
08:13The vehicle had damage to the windscreen and the bonnet
08:18Consistent with having been in the collision on the 22nd of December
08:22The vehicle evaded police again
08:26But was found burnt out half an hour later
08:30Despite detectives' best efforts
08:34They have been unable to identify the driver involved in the hit and run
08:39As a dad, especially at that time of year
08:43Dealing with such an incident
08:45Seeing such devastation that's caused to the child and his family
08:49It's very emotional to watch
08:51So for the sake of the victim and the family
08:53We would appeal to anybody with information
08:55I'd say who the driver was at the time of the collision
08:58Any of the occupants of the vehicle at the time of the collision
09:01Or if anybody knows where the vehicle was before the collision
09:05To come forward to us
09:07How can someone drive round
09:16Knowing what they've done?
09:20I don't understand
09:21There's a lot to be said from doing the right thing
09:27And speaking up when you know
09:30Something as horrible as this has happened
09:33You can't let this go
09:37You do it once, they'll do it again, won't they?
09:40Well, as we saw
09:45This incident has caused horrific lifelong injuries
09:49For that boy
09:50With devastating consequences
09:51For his whole entire family
09:52DS Kurt Timpson from Assyside Police is with us now
09:56Kurt, thank you for coming in today
09:57A large part of your job
09:59Is actually looking after the families
10:01That have gone through something like this
10:04So I have to ask
10:04How is that young lad doing now?
10:07Morning, Rav
10:07Yeah, the family are devastated
10:10As we saw in the film
10:11By what's happened
10:12And it's changed their lives forever
10:15He lost one of his legs
10:16Other really serious injuries
10:18And these psychological injuries
10:19Will be lifelong
10:20Battle for him
10:23The family at the centre of every investigation that we do
10:26That's the way we run our investigations
10:28They're the middle focus
10:29And that's what we intend to do with this
10:31And that's why we want help today from the viewers
10:33To try and trace the person responsible
10:35For this awful incident
10:37Well hopefully we can help you with exactly that then
10:40So let's just start by recapping the key points of this appeal
10:43Yep, so the 22nd of December
10:47Was the date of the collision
10:49It was a Sunday
10:50And the boy was travelling on his push bike
10:53Along Bracknell Avenue in Kirby
10:57And he was on his way to his grandmother's house
11:00He was struck by the vehicle
11:04Which was travelling at 70 miles an hour
11:06We've seen the footage on the film earlier on
11:09It just brings it home to you
11:11How quick that vehicle was travelling
11:12It's a 20 mile an hour limit for a reason
11:15Because of all the residential premises
11:17The school, etc, etc
11:19We can't have people on the roads
11:22Driving like that
11:23So it's really important
11:24We trace this individual
11:25Absolutely
11:26Well you've mentioned the speed
11:28Of the collision
11:28We can actually see some CCTV now
11:30That captures the car going past
11:32At exactly that speed
11:33In what you say was a 20 mile an hour zone
11:36Let's just take a look at that now
11:37We can see it here
11:38We've not altered this footage
11:41You've not altered this footage
11:42That is literally how it was captured
11:44And that's how quick that car was going
11:45It's probably so quick
11:46And many people may have missed it
11:48Let's have another look at that
11:49Here it goes
11:4970 miles per hour
11:51In a 20 miles per hour zone
11:54And Kurt, there's nothing anyone could do
11:56At that speed to avoid a collision, surely?
11:58No, a driver travelling at that speed
11:59In those conditions
12:01Cannot possibly identify and deal with hazards
12:05That boy was doing nothing wrong
12:07He's been hit by that vehicle
12:09At a ridiculous speed
12:11And no fault of his own
12:13Absolutely horrific
12:15So what do we know about the car?
12:16So the car was one of a batch of cars
12:19Stolen on the 8th of December
12:21From a car dealership in Wigan
12:22It was an organised theft
12:25And this was just one of the vehicles
12:27That was taken
12:27The registration YY18ZTF
12:30Is the true registration
12:32That this vehicle should have been displaying
12:33And that's a picture of the actual vehicle there
12:36It was stolen, they say
12:38As part of the burglary
12:40And after that
12:43It was then used for a few days
12:45Before this collision
12:46Yeah, so in between the 8th of December
12:49And the 22nd of December
12:50This vehicle was active
12:52Around the Merseyside area
12:53It was displaying both that registration
12:56And at some point
12:57The registration was swapped
12:59To Oscar Victor 70
13:00Oscar Victor Golf
13:02That is a false number plate
13:04Relates to a different vehicle
13:05And that plate you see on the picture there
13:07Was left at the scene
13:08As a result of the crash
13:10Okay, so that's actually
13:11From the scene of the crash there
13:12And like you say
13:13It goes back to a totally different vehicle
13:15But that's what it was on at the time
13:17So you will want any information
13:19About people that have seen that vehicle
13:20Driving around with that plate on
13:21Yeah
13:22Any information people can give to us
13:24It might seem insignificant to them
13:27But please let us be the judge of it
13:28Because it can be that
13:30Really insignificant piece of information
13:32That can lead us
13:32And join the dots together
13:33To help us solve it
13:34Yeah, you might think it's insignificant
13:35But it could be crucial to you
13:36Now, your colleagues in Manchester
13:39Actually had some dealings with this vehicle
13:42They did, yes
13:43So on the 18th of December
13:45The vehicle was sighted in Manchester
13:47And there was a brief police pursuit
13:50The vehicle was lost
13:52However, it did give us a still image
13:57Of a person of interest
13:58Well, let's have a look at that now, actually
14:00It's not the clearest image
14:01It is quite grainy
14:03But it's something to go on
14:04And that is a person
14:05That you would very much like to speak to
14:07So if anyone recognises that individual
14:09We'd certainly like some names suggested for them
14:12The car itself
14:14It was shortly after
14:15It was actually set alight, wasn't it?
14:17That's right
14:18So on the 28th of December
14:19So in between the crash
14:21Happening on the 22nd and the 28th
14:23That vehicle's being used
14:24With the damage
14:25With the missing number plate
14:26Brazenly around Merseyside
14:28It was spotted again on the 28th
14:30Late at night
14:31And then about half an hour later
14:32On the morning of the 29th of December
14:34It was found burnt out in Billinge
14:36In the greater Manchester area
14:38You can just see there
14:39They're completely destroyed
14:41Now you've mentioned earlier
14:42That if someone thinks
14:44The information they might have
14:45Might be insignificant
14:46But it could be crucial to you
14:48There's actually a further incentive
14:50For people to come forward
14:52With information
14:52In terms of a Crimestoppers reward
14:54Yeah, so the independent charity
14:56Crimestoppers have put up
14:57A £7,500 reward
14:59For any information
15:00That leads to an arrest
15:01And conviction in this case
15:02This isn't a case
15:04To remain silent about
15:05It's a 15-year-old boy
15:07I'm a father
15:07A lot of the viewers today
15:09Watching are parents
15:10We have an anxiety
15:11About our children going out
15:13So you can do a really good thing today
15:16And give us information
15:17To help us solve this
15:18Hopefully we'll do exactly that
15:19Kurt, thank you
15:21Please do get in touch
15:22Via our QR code on screen
15:24If you have any information
15:25That might be useful to this case
15:27We're now off to Dundee
15:30Where Police Scotland
15:31Are dealing with a complex case
15:33Of human trafficking
15:34Trafficking in the United Kingdom
15:39Is defined as
15:40The recruitment
15:41Transportation
15:42Or harbouring
15:43Of a victim
15:44For the purposes of exploitation
15:46That doesn't mean
15:47That you have to bring somebody
15:49Across a country
15:50You can traffic somebody
15:51Across a room
15:52Or across a street
15:53Acting detective
16:02Chief Inspector
16:03Scott Carswell
16:04Investigates major
16:06And specialist crimes
16:07For Police Scotland
16:08The job I had in Dundee
16:11As an SIO
16:12Was very much
16:13Round about organised crime
16:14And major inquiries
16:16Which would be drugs
16:17Murder
16:18Unexplained deaths
16:20And on this occasion
16:22Grooming
16:22And human trafficking
16:23In mid 2021
16:26Police received intelligence
16:28That a gang
16:29Was trafficking
16:30Romanian women
16:31Into Dundee
16:32To work as prostitutes
16:34In various brothels
16:35The problem with human trafficking
16:38Is the victims
16:40Don't always initially
16:41See themselves as victims
16:42But also
16:43Don't trust the police
16:44And they don't want
16:46To engage with the police
16:47A lot of the times
16:48We are having to
16:50Trace victims
16:51That we believe
16:52Were victims
16:53They weren't coming to us
16:55There are other means
16:57We can use
16:58And that can be
16:58Reacting to intelligence
17:00Getting search warrants
17:01And targeting addresses
17:03Where we believe
17:04There's criminal activity
17:05In the case
17:06Of the Romanian women
17:07Police gathered
17:09Enough evidence
17:09To arrest and charge
17:11Those involved
17:12With human trafficking
17:13Offences
17:13The inquiry
17:16Was at the case
17:16Preparation stage
17:17The accused persons
17:19Were on bail
17:20That would have been
17:21May 2022
17:22But then police
17:24Heard about a change
17:25Of tactic
17:26Round about July
17:27August time
17:28We started to receive
17:29New intelligence
17:29About the group
17:31Which indicated
17:32They were targeting
17:33Honourable females
17:34From Dundee
17:35From the local communities
17:36I have dealt
17:38With some human trafficking
17:39Cases where the victims
17:40Have been from abroad
17:41But this was the first one
17:43When the victims are local
17:44The officers identified
17:48A number of young women
17:49From Dundee
17:50Who'd been targeted
17:51By the group
17:52But again
17:53The women wouldn't
17:54Engage with the police
17:55Then
17:56In September 2022
17:58The family of one
18:00Of those young women
18:01Reported her
18:02As missing
18:03The vulnerable victim
18:05Had attended
18:05At her family member's address
18:07To collect items
18:08Of clothing
18:08And said
18:10That she had to go away
18:12With a male
18:13Who was outside
18:13In a car
18:14And she'd said
18:15That she was scared
18:16To go with the male
18:17But she had to go with him
18:18And she was scared
18:18That one day
18:19He might kill her
18:19The family member
18:23Was really concerned
18:24For her safety
18:24At this point
18:25However
18:25Much to the frustration
18:26That the female left
18:28And got in the car
18:29So the family member
18:30Was quite proactive
18:31And went outside
18:32And managed to get photographs
18:34Of the car
18:34Including the registration number
18:36A young female
18:38Leaving in a car
18:40With a male
18:40Much older than herself
18:42Saying that she's scared
18:43Of him
18:43And that he may kill her
18:44But she needs to go with him
18:45So that marks all the boxes
18:48For a high-risk missing person
18:49For me
18:50With the details
18:52Of the vehicle
18:53We traced the female
18:54At an address
18:55In Bright Street
18:56In Lockheed
18:56Dundee
18:57They knew it was
18:58An address linked
18:59To the gang
19:00Uniformed officers
19:01Attended at the address
19:03As the officers
19:04Searched inside the flat
19:06They found the missing female
19:08And two males
19:09Two males
19:10At that address
19:11Is Marian Kumpanasu
19:12I'd remissed that
19:14Both of the men
19:16Were part of the original gang
19:18Trafficking Romanian women
19:19There was various checks
19:21Under the address
19:22There was nothing at that time
19:23To suggest any criminality
19:25The missing female
19:27Was removed
19:28And taken to a safe place
19:30But with no evidence
19:31Of criminal activity
19:32The officers were unable
19:34To make any arrests
19:36Whilst engaging with
19:38The high-risk missing person
19:39And gathering information
19:40From her
19:40We identified
19:41That a few days
19:42Before the female
19:43Was reported missing to us
19:45She and others
19:46Had been taken
19:47Into a hotel room
19:48In Dundee
19:49That the group
19:50Had been using
19:50From there
19:51We identified
19:52Other victims
19:53And we identified
19:55That there may have been
19:56Some offenders
19:56In that room as well
19:57Given the sensitive nature
20:03Of the case
20:04Police enlisted the support
20:06Of Justice and Care
20:07An organisation that specialises
20:10In assisting victims
20:11Of modern slavery
20:12The victim navigator programme
20:15Was born out of
20:17An identified gap
20:19Within policing
20:21And victim support services
20:22Advocating for the victims
20:25But also making sure
20:27That the victims
20:27Understand the criminal justice process
20:30In this case
20:32All of these girls
20:33Have been involved
20:34In difficult backgrounds
20:36And have had really
20:37A negative experience
20:39Of services to date
20:42So the team went out
20:44And engaged with the girls
20:46And over a period of time
20:48Gained their trust
20:49And that works in a way
20:51Where if you're there
20:53For somebody
20:54And you're honest with them
20:56And you deliver
20:57What you promise
20:58Trust is built
20:59And as a consequence
21:01Of trusting the victim navigators
21:03The girls then trust the police
21:05As police took statements
21:07From the women
21:07A disturbing picture emerged
21:10Of the lives
21:10Under the gang's influence
21:12And at one point
21:14In the inquiry
21:15We were up to about
21:1625 different females
21:17Who were involved
21:18With this group
21:19Their stories all matched
21:20And they talked about
21:22Being invited to parties
21:23It would start off
21:25As like a social event
21:26But it would eventually
21:27Get very sexualised
21:28With pornographic material
21:30Being shown
21:30And the females
21:32Being coerced
21:33Into sexual acts
21:34And in return
21:38They did get crack kicking
21:39It was all very controlling
21:43Getting the females drunk
21:45To the point
21:45They were unconscious
21:46Getting them so
21:49High on drugs
21:50They were incapable
21:51Of leaving the address
21:52Because one of the females
21:54Actually spoke about
21:54Them locking the door
21:55And hiding the keys
21:56On one occasion
21:57There was nothing
21:59Consensual about it at all
22:00They were clearly
22:01Being forced into
22:02Situations they didn't
22:03Want to be in
22:04And the more this
22:05Continued
22:06The more addicted
22:07They got
22:07So they would continue
22:09To attend the address
22:10Which was very sad to see
22:11And as much as
22:14These were local females
22:15If they'd been moved
22:16About in vehicles
22:17And coerced into situations
22:18It's still a form of
22:19Trafficking and exploitation
22:20Well later
22:25We will see how
22:26That gang were caught
22:27Now we've got an appeal
22:30For you
22:30From West Midlands Police
22:32Regarding an assault
22:33In a busy bar
22:34I'm with PC George Cornville
22:36The officer investigating
22:37This case
22:37George thank you
22:38For coming in today
22:39What can you tell us
22:39About this appeal
22:40Yeah good morning
22:41So on the 31st of May 2025
22:43Our victim
22:45Who's a male in his 20s
22:46Attended a bar
22:47In Birmingham
22:47On Temple Street
22:48He was seriously assaulted
22:50Leading to a gash
22:51To his head
22:51And lots of blood loss
22:53The offenders
22:54Were kicked out of the venue
22:54And since then
22:55We've not been able
22:56To identify them
22:57Very nasty sounding assault
22:59So let's have a look
23:00At where this actually happened
23:02We've got a map here George
23:03Just talk us through this area
23:04Because it's right
23:05In the centre of Birmingham
23:07Isn't it
23:07Yeah exactly
23:08As you said
23:08So as you can see here
23:09New Street train station
23:11Is just below Temple Street
23:12This offence
23:13Has actually happened
23:13On a Saturday
23:14And it's happened
23:15At around 10pm
23:16So there's lots of foot traffic
23:17This is a popular place
23:18For people to drink
23:19The victim and his friend
23:21Have been in the bar
23:22The offender
23:23And his friends
23:25Have also been in the same bar
23:26One of the offenders
23:28Has continuously bumped
23:29Into the victim
23:29And his friend
23:30He's clearly intoxicated
23:32The victim
23:32Dafts him to stop
23:33And watch wherever he's going
23:34Which is when the second offender
23:36Then has made his way over
23:37Some verbal altercation
23:38Has occurred
23:39Leading to the offender
23:40That's come over
23:41To challenge the friend
23:41And headbutt him
23:42This assault
23:44Has continued
23:44For about 20 seconds
23:45With the second offender
23:46Then also pummeling
23:47With a few punches as well
23:48Well you've actually
23:49Provided this with CCTV
23:50That we can see now actually
23:52And if we look at the
23:53Left hand side of your screen
23:55Just talk us through
23:56What's happening here George
23:57Yeah so as we can see
23:58Down the bottom
23:59Of the two offenders
23:59We're having a conversation
24:00If you'll see
24:01Hang on just a second
24:02And the offender
24:03Has then headbutted the victim
24:04The second offender
24:05Then continues to punch
24:06Whilst the victim's
24:07Down on the floor
24:08Again this continues
24:09For another 10 seconds
24:10Or so after this
24:11Very nasty assault
24:12Now we've deliberately
24:13Paused the footage there
24:15Because it's just too graphic
24:16To show in full
24:17But as you say
24:18It continued
24:19For a good few seconds
24:21After that
24:21So that wasn't even
24:22The end of it
24:22Where we've stopped it there
24:23Nasty assault indeed
24:25Now we've got another
24:26Bit of CCTV
24:27That we're going to show here
24:28This is actually
24:28Outside the venue George
24:30But it's relevant to show
24:31Because it shows
24:31The same person
24:33Yeah exactly
24:33It shows the offender
24:34So after the incident
24:35They were escorted outside
24:36By security
24:37So this is the offender
24:38That has headbutted the victim
24:39And caused
24:40You know
24:41The injury essentially
24:43So after that
24:45He stood outside the club
24:47And waited for his friends
24:47To appear
24:48And they've headed up
24:49Towards Pigeon Park
24:49From Temple Street
24:50Well let's have a look
24:51At the people you want
24:52To identify
24:53We can see them here
24:54How would they be described?
24:56So as you can see
24:56The two white males
24:57They're described
24:59As being in their early 30s
25:00Both short dark hair
25:02With short dark beards
25:03Or stubble
25:04And they were both wearing
25:05White t-shirts
25:05On the night
25:06The first offender
25:07On the left
25:07With a white polo shirt
25:09And the offender
25:09On the right
25:10Had a shark motif
25:11On his top
25:11You can see the offender
25:13On the right there
25:14He's wearing the sunglasses
25:15Both offenders
25:16Had those sunglasses
25:17On throughout the night
25:17So they were interchanging
25:18As the night went on
25:19But people might recognise that
25:21Or cast their mind back
25:22Because it's fairly rare
25:23For people to have sunglasses
25:24On inside a busy bar
25:25Exactly
25:26But these people
25:27Were sharing these sunglasses
25:28Throughout the night
25:28And also their accents as well
25:30Were described to you
25:32Yeah so they sounded like
25:33They were from Birmingham
25:33Essentially so
25:34Our assumption is
25:35They are local
25:36To the Birmingham area
25:37Okay
25:38Now you've been in
25:39A lot of contact
25:40With this victim
25:41This male in his 20s
25:42That was left
25:43With this nasty head injury
25:44How is he now
25:46Because this has
25:47Seriously affected him
25:48Yeah so
25:48Immediately after the incident
25:50Luckily police officers
25:50Were there within a matter
25:51Of minutes
25:51He was seen by the ambulance
25:53And treated obviously
25:54He had the physical injuries
25:56But also he's a young
25:5723 year old male
25:58Who should be able
26:00To go out clubbing
26:00And he's now
26:01Nervous about going out
26:02Clubbing and going to bars
26:03Because he's just been
26:04Randomly assaulted
26:04Again it's just going
26:06To knock your confidence
26:06Completely understandable
26:07So we need to find out
26:08Who's responsible
26:09One more map
26:10We're going to show you now
26:10Because this is where
26:13They went after the assault
26:14Again a lot of people
26:15Will know this busy part
26:16Of Birmingham
26:17Can you just talk us
26:18Through the direction
26:19They left
26:20Yeah so as you can see
26:21Where it's marked here
26:21On Temple Street
26:22Up straight above
26:23At Pigeon Park
26:24They've been kicked out
26:25Of the club
26:26Around 10pm
26:27And they would have
26:28Walked up towards
26:29Pigeon Park
26:30And taken a sharp left
26:31At the top of Temple Street
26:32Up towards the
26:32Bennett Hill area
26:33Over here
26:33Unfortunately we don't
26:35Have any CCTV cameras
26:36That cover over there
26:36So we've lost sight
26:37Of them after that
26:38Hopefully someone
26:39Will know where they went
26:40George thank you
26:41Have another look
26:42Do you recognise
26:44These men
26:45Or were you in
26:45Temple Street
26:46At the time
26:46And did you see
26:47Anything
26:48If so
26:48Contact us
26:49To report any
26:50Information you can
26:51Now bar fights
26:54And unprovoked
26:55Attacks like the one
26:56We just heard about
26:57Can cause lasting
26:58Damage and can even
26:59Be fatal for those
27:00Caught up in them
27:01I'm with
27:02Superintendent Phil
27:03Gray and DS Lee
27:04Mariner both from
27:05Norfolk and Suffolk
27:06Police to hear more
27:07About the latest
27:08One Punch campaign
27:09Aimed at raising
27:10Awareness around the
27:11Dangers of these
27:13Types of assault
27:13Gents thank you so
27:14Much for joining us
27:15Phil I'm going to
27:16Come to you first
27:16Why have you
27:17Launched this campaign
27:18So in a matter of
27:19Seconds one punch
27:20Can cause such
27:21Devastation for not
27:23Only the victim but
27:24Also those that
27:25Throw that punch
27:26It's not unique to
27:27Norfolk and Suffolk
27:28But in Norfolk and
27:29Suffolk in the last
27:29Year we've had two
27:30People convicted of
27:32One punch killings
27:33And this campaign is
27:35Just to highlight
27:36What impact that can
27:37Have not just on the
27:39Victim as I say but
27:40Their families and
27:40And of course the
27:41Perpetrators
27:42Yeah it's such a
27:43Huge effect I mean
27:44One punch causes
27:45Devastation and
27:46And there's a huge
27:47Ripple effect that
27:47You alluded to there
27:48Absolutely in these
27:49Incidents there's we've
27:50Got two people that
27:51Have tragically lost
27:52Their lives we've got
27:53Two families that
27:54Have lost a loved
27:55One and we've got
27:56Two individuals that
27:57Are serving sentences
27:59In prison and are
28:01Convicted killers
28:02Yeah it's awful
28:04Nobody nobody wins
28:05In that situation at
28:06All and Lee a
28:07Recent survey showed
28:08That 75% of one
28:10Punch incidents are a
28:11Result of alcohol
28:12Consumption and
28:14There's one particular
28:14Incident that's really
28:15Stuck with you isn't
28:16There regarding a
28:17Young man called
28:17David
28:18Yeah so during the
28:19Early hours of the
28:2019th of March 2022
28:21David was out on a
28:23Night out in Norwich
28:24With his friends
28:24He was trying to get
28:25A taxi and he was the
28:26Victim of a horrendous
28:27Attack which left him
28:28In a critical condition
28:29And left him with
28:30Lifelong permanent
28:31Injuries the
28:33Perpetrator of that
28:33Attack was convicted
28:35Of a GBH with intent
28:36At Norwich Crown
28:37Court and received
28:38Seven and a half
28:38Years sentence for
28:40That crime he
28:41Committed
28:41David and his family
28:43Have been permanently
28:44Affected by this and
28:45It's changed his life
28:46Yeah it really has in
28:47Fact the victim in this
28:48Case David told us about
28:50The lasting effects that
28:51Night had on him
28:52I had everything stripped
28:55From me in one moment
28:57And I ended up with a
28:59Severe traumatic brain
29:00Injury after being hit
29:02From just one punch
29:03And I wasn't expected
29:04To survive from this
29:05I had to have a large
29:08Part of my skull removed
29:09And was on intensive
29:11Care to keep me alive
29:13There's lots of
29:14Families out there
29:14That lose a loved one
29:16And all it is
29:18Is one choice
29:18And one act of
29:20Violence
29:21That can have the
29:22Most devastating impact
29:23On so many people
29:24Such powerful
29:26Words from David
29:27They are
29:28Heartbreaking to watch
29:29And you've worked
29:29Closely with David
29:30And his family
29:31It has been
29:32And so heartbreaking
29:33For him and the
29:34Whole family
29:34Yeah I got to know
29:35David really well
29:36During the course
29:36Of the investigation
29:37Right up until the
29:38Point the trial finished
29:39When I first met
29:40David after he left
29:41Hospital approximately
29:42About five or six
29:43Weeks he could hardly
29:44He could hardly talk
29:46He had no cognitive
29:47Functions he was
29:48Unable to stand up
29:49And walk properly
29:50It was really
29:50Heartbreaking and
29:51Seeing sitting in
29:52That living room
29:53With him and his
29:53Family and his
29:54Mother particularly
29:55It was just
29:55The effect was just
29:56Awful
29:57Yeah and I think
29:58We just need to
29:58Like really emphasize
29:59This is just one
30:00Punch like I know
30:01The whole campaign
30:02Has rounded that
30:03But you think
30:03Surely that can't
30:05Happen from one punch
30:06And it can
30:06It really can
30:07I mean what do you
30:08Want people to take
30:09Away from today
30:10Yeah so I think
30:11My message is simple
30:12People should be able
30:13To go out
30:13They should be able
30:14To enjoy themselves
30:15But if arguments
30:16But if arguments start
30:16If confrontation
30:17And tensions rise
30:19Think about what
30:20You're doing
30:20Stop
30:21Deescalate
30:22Or simply just walk
30:23Away
30:23Because actually
30:24One punch might
30:25Not seem a lot
30:26But it can have
30:27Such devastating
30:28Impact on the
30:30Individual that
30:30Receives that punch
30:31And in cases
30:32Like we've just
30:34Spoken about
30:34They can be fatal
30:35Yeah they really can
30:37And Lee do you
30:37Want to add anything
30:38To that
30:38I mean again
30:38You've had experience
30:39In these cases as well
30:40Yeah I've worked
30:42In Norfolk and
30:42Southwark for many years
30:43And I've said it
30:43Numerous times
30:44Throughout my service
30:45And it is just
30:46Devastating
30:47And watching the CCTV
30:49Of similar incidents
30:50So many times
30:50And seeing how
30:52Just that one split
30:53Second decision
30:53Can change lives
30:54It's just
30:55People need to be
30:56Aware of this
30:56And think about
30:57Their actions
30:57Yeah they need to
30:58Go out there
30:58And make a difference
30:59And this campaign
31:00Hopefully will
31:00Really make sure
31:01That it emphasises
31:02That people remember
31:03It and take that
31:04Extra second
31:04To think about
31:05What they're doing
31:05Absolutely
31:06Absolutely
31:06And you know
31:07At times when
31:08You may have
31:08Consumed more
31:09Alcohol than
31:09You normally would
31:10That is the time
31:11That actually you
31:12Need to really
31:13Stop and think
31:13About what you're
31:14Doing
31:14Yeah important
31:15Words and a
31:15Great message
31:16Gents thank you
31:16So much for
31:17Joining us
31:18And thank you
31:18Of course to
31:19David as well
31:19For sharing
31:20Those very
31:20Poignant words
31:21Yesterday
31:24Kent Police
31:25Asked us
31:26To run this
31:26Urgent appeal
31:27Today
31:27So they are
31:29Looking for this
31:29Man
31:29This is James
31:30Or Jamie Rice
31:32He's been recalled
31:33To prison
31:33He is in his
31:34Early 40s
31:35He has several
31:36Scars on his face
31:38He's got pierced ears
31:39And an England
31:39Tattoo on his leg
31:41They say he has
31:42Connections to
31:43Maidstone, Folkestone
31:44And Ramsgate
31:44All of which are in
31:45Kent
31:45And also Eltham
31:46In London
31:47So do get in touch
31:48If you can help
31:50Back now to Dundee
31:51To see the second
31:52Part of our film
31:53About grooming gangs
31:55The inquiry
31:59Progressed
31:59It was quite
32:00Apparent that
32:01Marion
32:02Kumpinashu
32:03Was the ringleader
32:04To this group
32:05And he was known
32:05To the victims
32:06As Mario
32:07Mario used
32:09Different methods
32:11To entice
32:13Females
32:13It would be as
32:14Simple as
32:15Waiting in his vehicle
32:17Outside the nightclubs
32:18And identifying
32:20Vulnerable lone females
32:21Who were drunk
32:24And get them
32:25Into the car
32:25And offer them drugs
32:26Or offer them a lift home
32:27Another method
32:31Was that
32:32They would
32:33Encourage
32:34Victims
32:35To bring
32:36Their friends
32:36With them
32:37If they did
32:38Bring other girls up
32:40They would then
32:41Be enticed
32:41Into the sexual activity
32:42Which would mean
32:43That girl wouldn't be
32:44But she would still
32:45Get her free drugs
32:46So it was like
32:47A constant conveyor belt
32:48Of different females
32:49Attending at their dress
32:50The girls were plied
32:53With drugs and alcohol
32:54But the gang
32:55Also had another tactic
32:57They would pretend
32:58To care
32:59The lover boy
33:02Technique
33:02Is really a classic
33:04Tactic for
33:05Exploitation
33:06And trafficking
33:07Vulnerable women
33:09Or young people
33:10Are looking for
33:12That escape route
33:13Somebody that can
33:14Pay them attention
33:16Somebody that cares
33:17What they don't see
33:18Is that
33:19That's a monster
33:20In disguise
33:21So in this particular case
33:24One of the girls
33:25Had a professional job
33:27But was using
33:28Recreational drugs
33:30Fell in love
33:31With the young man
33:32Who took her to parties
33:34Who fed her more drugs
33:35Got her hooked on crack cocaine
33:38And all of a sudden
33:40Her life is very
33:41Very different
33:42And in order to feed
33:43That habit
33:44She started doing sex work
33:46And so had to leave
33:48Her professional career
33:49Behind
33:49And was just completely
33:51Controlled by this gang
33:53We were able to develop
33:58A picture
33:59And work out
34:01What members of the group
34:02Played what part of it
34:03And they were all
34:04Very much involved
34:05So there was four males
34:06And one female
34:06And some of the victims
34:09Actually described the female
34:10As one of the worst
34:11Very forceful
34:12Trying to get them
34:12To engage in sexual activity
34:14I think it's much more common
34:17For women to be involved
34:19In all forms of exploitation
34:21Than is maybe
34:22Given credit for
34:24Women are seen as carers
34:27And protectors
34:28They're not necessarily seen
34:31As abusers and exploiters
34:33While police continued
34:41To take statements
34:42They were thrown
34:43An unexpected curveball
34:45We were at an address
34:47Mario Kupinassu
34:49And Rima Stan
34:50Attended at the address
34:51Obviously not expecting
34:53To find the police there
34:54It was quite a dynamic situation
34:56But we decided at that point
34:58We would arrest them
34:59Caught them with our guard down
35:01So we managed to recover
35:02Mobile phones
35:03And from the phones
35:05We got some
35:06Horrendous footage
35:07Of non-consensual sexual acts
35:10With one of the victims
35:11The footage on the phone
35:13Was awful
35:13It was
35:14It was terrible
35:16To think that
35:18These males
35:21Felt it was okay
35:22To treat
35:23Females like this
35:25We need to get
35:28These guys in the jail
35:28The two men were remanded
35:33Into custody
35:33But the other three suspects
35:35Fled the country
35:36Within two months
35:38Of the international warrants
35:39Being given to us
35:41We had the three arrested
35:42One was traced in the Czech Republic
35:44And the other two were traced
35:45In Belgium
35:46And they were actually
35:47Rated back to the UK
35:48The victims were able
35:54To give recorded testimony
35:55Without having to face
35:57The trauma
35:58Of attending court
35:59The victim stepped up
36:02And had the
36:02Courage to speak out
36:05And tell us a story
36:06And it was a great feeling
36:07Because I was confident
36:09At this point
36:09We would get it
36:10Over the line at court
36:11Which was testament to them
36:13That they had that courage
36:14To come forward
36:15And do this
36:15I think by this point
36:16In the inquiry
36:17They realised
36:18A they were victims
36:20And B the impact
36:21This group had had on them
36:22Marianne Kumpanashoyou
36:24Rima Stan
36:26Cataline Dobre
36:27Christiane Ulatianu
36:29And Alexandra Borgogna
36:31Were convicted of offences
36:33Including rape
36:34At the High Court in Glasgow
36:36As well as the ten
36:38Victim statements
36:39Given at trial
36:40Detectives found evidence
36:42As many as 25 women
36:44May have been targeted
36:45The five members
36:48Are to be sentenced
36:49In due course
36:50The group have found guilty
36:59On a number of charges
37:00But the one that stuck out
37:01For me was
37:02There was 23 rape charges
37:03That were found guilty
37:04On the indictment
37:05Which goes to show
37:08The depravity
37:09And the depths
37:09That they would go to
37:10If we hadn't got this case
37:15To where we did
37:15I dread to think
37:17What would have been
37:17Going on in the community
37:19With this group
37:19I think the proudest part
37:21Of this inquiry
37:22Has been able to keep
37:24The victims safe
37:25And given the bad guys
37:26A jail
37:27We're still engaged
37:29With the girls
37:30That we started
37:31That journey with
37:32The victim navigator
37:34Is there
37:35For the long haul
37:36In order to make sure
37:37That it's not us
37:39That leave
37:40It's the survivor
37:41Because they're empowered
37:43To leave
37:44And stand on their own
37:45Two feet
37:45Some very important words
37:50There from Debbie
37:51And I am now joined
37:52By Debbie Lloyd
37:52Who we heard from there
37:53In the film
37:54And as I said
37:55Brilliant words there
37:56Important
37:57And we will touch on that
37:58But first of all
37:59Can you tell us a wee bit
37:59About Justice and Care
38:00And what you actually do
38:01So Justice and Care
38:03Is a charity
38:04To support victims
38:07Of modern slavery
38:08We started in 2008
38:10Over in India
38:10And Bangladesh
38:11And then have sort of
38:13Progressed into
38:14The United Kingdom
38:15Okay so you are
38:16The team lead
38:17Of the victim navigator
38:18Program
38:19What is the aim
38:20Of that particular program
38:21The criminal justice journey
38:23For modern slavery victims
38:24Is a really long one
38:26So the aim of the program
38:27Is to bridge that gap
38:29Between an identified victim
38:30That the police are
38:32Sort of gathering evidence from
38:33And that criminal justice journey
38:35To advocate for those victims
38:37On that journey
38:38Those investigations are complex
38:40And take years to finish
38:43And so victims need somebody
38:46To support them
38:47On that road
38:48Yeah because it's
38:49Quite stressful
38:50It's an emotional journey
38:52And I think that's something
38:52You really want to make sure
38:53That is emphasised
38:55Absolutely
38:55And it has its ups and downs
38:57At the very start of the journey
38:58When a victim is first identified
39:00They're identified as victims
39:02By law enforcement
39:03But it's really hard
39:05For an individual to say
39:06I am a victim
39:07And to take that on
39:09And so that's really intense
39:11When the police want information
39:13From them
39:13And want to learn
39:14What's happened
39:15And it's really important
39:16To have some support there
39:18And an understanding
39:19Of that process
39:20And then the investigation
39:21Goes on
39:22And the criminal justice process
39:24Takes a long time
39:24But that victim's journey
39:26Is only just beginning
39:27And we're all about
39:28Turning that victim
39:30Into a witness
39:31Into a survivor
39:32Yeah
39:32And so that by the end
39:34Of the journey
39:34When they're able
39:35To give evidence in court
39:36And testify against
39:38These individuals
39:39That have put them
39:40Through horrific times
39:41They come out empowered
39:43At the other end
39:43Yeah that's an incredible thing
39:45To be able to do
39:46And how do navigators
39:47Actually become involved
39:48With the police
39:48You're there from the very beginning
39:49Aren't you?
39:49Absolutely
39:50We're really fortunate
39:52That we've developed
39:53Really good relationships
39:54With police forces
39:55And the navigators
39:57Are embedded within
39:58Policing teams
40:00That specialise
40:01Within modern slavery
40:02Investigations
40:03So we're there
40:04Right from the start
40:05As helping police
40:06Gather intelligence
40:07So looking at
40:08The cultural background
40:09Potentially of victims
40:11That they're going to come across
40:12When they deploy
40:13And do warrants
40:13And we go with them
40:15When they deploy
40:16So we are there
40:17Right from the very beginning
40:18To advocate for those victims
40:20And you want to see this
40:21Rolled out nationally
40:22As well don't you?
40:23Absolutely
40:23We've had this programme
40:24Evaluated and it works
40:26If you don't have
40:28A victim navigator
40:28On a modern slavery investigation
40:30You've got around
40:31About 40-44% chance
40:33Of a conviction
40:34At the end of the journey
40:36But if you have a navigator
40:38Your rate goes up to 97%
40:41It is a no-brainer
40:43For a criminal justice outcome
40:45That's a huge improvement
40:46So it's something
40:48That needs to be done
40:49Absolutely
40:49And on top of that
40:5180% of our survivors
40:52Say that they've got
40:54Better outcomes
40:55As a consequence
40:56Of having that advocacy
40:57And support
40:58Through that journey
40:59Yeah
40:59And you supported
41:00Over 750 survivors
41:02Yeah we've supported
41:02Over 750 survivors
41:04And we've seen
41:06As a consequence of that
41:08At least 70 offenders
41:09Prosecuted
41:10Wow
41:10And there's many more
41:12In the pipeline
41:12And my team are out
41:13Working all the time
41:15To try and support
41:17Those survivors
41:17And support policing teams
41:19So if people are at home
41:20And they're wondering
41:20What are the signs
41:21Of exploitation
41:22And what do we need
41:24To be vigilant
41:24And look out for
41:25It is really hard
41:26And there's no
41:27Getting away from that
41:28Modern slavery
41:30Is a hidden crime
41:31But do you know
41:33When you go to a car wash
41:34And you don't pay very much
41:35And there's no
41:36Sort of protective kit
41:38That the guys are wearing
41:39Or the ladies are wearing
41:40And there's only one person
41:41Collecting the money
41:42Do you know
41:43Start just looking
41:45Slightly wider
41:46And think about that
41:48If you go into a nail bar
41:50And nobody speaks
41:51Any English for example
41:52And again
41:54One person's taking
41:55All the takings
41:57Just have a look
41:59And think about that
42:01You can sort of
42:02See people
42:04That
42:04Maybe they look
42:07Unkempt
42:08And somebody's
42:08Controlling them
42:09Or
42:10We see quite a lot
42:12Of exploitation
42:12In high streets
42:13Where people are
42:14Bust in
42:15And dropped off
42:16To
42:16Sort of forced begging
42:18That sort of thing
42:19Absolutely
42:20There's so much
42:20To consider
42:21And it is there
42:22So be vigilant
42:23And make sure
42:23You make those reports
42:24Thank you so much
42:25Debbie
42:25It's so important
42:26And it's a great message
42:27To be sharing today
42:27Thank you
42:28Thank you
42:29Thank you
42:31Really really interesting

43:16I immediately knew
43:19That this was going into
43:20A manhunt
43:21He posed a very real threat
43:23To national security
