00:00The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration's new 100,000
00:06U.S. dollar fee on visas for skilled foreign workers. President Donald Trump signed an
00:12executive order last month introducing the fee, saying the visa program had been abused.
00:20The chamber argued that the move would make it cost-prohibitive for employers to hire skilled
00:25foreign workers. In response, the White House said the fee was lawful and an incremental step
00:32towards necessary reforms. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Ludnick previously defended the order,
00:39saying all of the big companies were in support of the policy.
00:44The new fee applies only to fresh visa applications, with entry restricted unless the payment is made.
00:51Trump also announced a new gold card scheme to fast-track visas for certain immigrants,
00:57starting at fees of 1 million U.S. dollars. The decision has drawn criticism from tech leaders,
01:04including Tesla CEO and former Trump ally Elon Musk, who say the H-1B program helps the U.S.
01:12attract top talent from around the world. Other critics also argue that it undercuts
01:18the American workforce as it is used heavily by the U.S. tech sector,
01:23with most H-1B holders come from India and China.
