00:00A new directive from the Trump administration could change the way tech companies hire
00:04international talent. The administration issued an executive order on Friday that said tech
00:10companies have to pay $100,000 per H-1B visa worker. The order was very vague. There was a
00:17lot of confusion that seemed very unnecessary and caused a lot of havoc for tech workers in the U.S.
00:23And then the White House press secretary clarified on Saturday that this actually only applied to
00:28new applicants and also that this would only be a one-time $100,000 fee. The H-1B program is
00:35supposed to be for very specialized workers. It's supposed to be if a company cannot find anyone
00:40in the U.S. to fill that role, then they use this program to bring in people from other countries.
00:46The White House argument was that the H-1B program has strayed from its original mission of bringing
00:51in highly skilled workers and is being abused by some firms. The most prominent voice to come out
00:57in favor of what the White House is doing is Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings. It's surprising
01:02because he's actually one of the few democratic tech
01:05have a couple of them. As kind of quickly related to the H-1B
