A Gardener's Guide to Climbing and Rambling Roses
Transcript
00:00This winter we've taken out as many plants as we possibly can.
00:05The next thing we've done is put in more structure.
00:08These fantastic hornbeam balls.
00:12We've made obelisks to take a rambling rose there
00:15and then there's another one on this side.
00:17And we'll bring the planting back, reusing as much as possible.
00:21And today I'm going to be planting a rose to go up this obelisk.
00:30I've got this rose to match the one on the other side, called Chevy Chase.
00:53It's got a mass of red flowers and it flowers for a long time,
00:57which is unusual because that is a rambling rose.
01:01A rambling rose tends to only flower once with lots of small flowers
01:06produced on the previous year's wood.
01:10Whereas climbing roses tend to have bigger flowers,
01:13all produced on the current season's wood.
01:16Now it doesn't matter if you've got a climbing or a rambling rose,
01:20the way of planting them is the same.
01:22You dig a hole and you put them in it.
01:24Job done. Well, almost.
01:34I'm digging quite a deep hole because the roots are quite substantial.
01:39This is a bare root rose, which is why I've got it in a bucket of water.
01:43Now, roses should always be planted deeper than they come in the pot.
01:50This is the graft and this is the rootstock.
01:55This tells you how it grows. This tells you how it flowers.
01:58I like to plant it so that that is about an inch below the soil
02:02and that will stop root rock and also reduce suckers.
02:09That's about right. Almost perfect.
02:11So hold that in position and then get the soil around it.
02:17You don't need to add any extra goodness to the soil.
02:21Because if you do, you're just encouraging the roots
02:24to stay in the planting hole.
02:27Roses are tough, particularly rambling roses.
02:30They will cope with all kinds of conditions.
02:34The bare root season is roughly November to the end of February,
02:37so we're right at the edge of it.
02:39You may find it easier at this time of year to plant containerised roses.
02:45Give it a good soak.
02:51Always water any plant when you put it in,
02:53but particularly a woody plant like this.
02:55Now, remember this is a rambler,
02:58so all the new growth this year will have not a single flower on it.
03:03That doesn't matter. We're just establishing it,
03:05train it to work it round the obelisk,
03:08and then next year we'll start to flower,
03:10and in year three it should be magnificent.
03:13And if you could explain it enough to each leave soon.
03:18That's how MUA man died.
03:19So the first one has to see it in the museum.
03:20That's the inspiration
03:21on how BLUH is.
03:22That's what enemies in the museum,
03:23are at the tailêts estudants learning too.
03:25And we're just asking about the вкус of the superhuman knowledge.
03:26And we're just comparing all the vegetables to the passive roots
03:29thattarjanus wants to grow ok to a tribe.
03:31And if you do, which is a video of a tribe of a native criar thing,
03:33it's mainly berry 2 hot in 1996.
